[Q] i9000 not booting any more - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have been using some release candidates of ICS which were available here on my i9000. Everything worked out generally fine. Sometimes my phone crashed and then it wouldn't want to go further than my i9000 and afterwards the google screen. Both screens would just repeat endlessly without the phone doing anything.
When this happened, I was always able to go back to recovery mode and uninstall everything and reinstall the rom. This would always solve my problem.
Now here is my current issue: on Saturday my phone crashed again, but now I can NOT enter recovery mode any more. Whenever I plug in a usb cable or normal cable to charge my phone it shows the calculating sign and after a few secs it's gone and starts all over again instead of showing the green battery slowly getting full.
The only thing which works is getting into download mode. So I tried to get odin to work. I installed kies to get the usb drivers and I opened odin (on both windows and a mac), but it does NOTHING.
Is there any other way I can reset my phone to get it somehow working again? Is there another way to get into recovery besides the buttons or using odin? I know of ADB but that requires the phone to be on....

When you plug your phone in (and enter download mode) what device type does windows detect it as?
Because you can get to download mode normally a "good" sign that it isn't bricked (and even when "bricked" it can be un-bricked)
Edit
Just tested mine, entered download mode and odin shows it connected on Com6, device manager shows it connected as a "Samsung Mobile Modem"
try and install the samsung modem drivers separately then try and connect connect

Hi,
first, be sure that all Kies-services are disabled via Taskmanager otherwise ODIN wont work correct!
then Bring your SGS1 to the Downloadmode, connect the USB_cable at the phone.
fullfill all sections you need in ODIN (PDA-Kernle, CODE-modem, CSC-CSC, pitfile512) klick repartition on
then connect your SGS1 via USB to the PC
Odin will show "connected"
Press start.

[Q] Windows shows 'unknown device' in Download mode..

This is probably getting boring to some people now but i am having a major issue with Odin detecting my phone when it is in Download mode.
Once i connect the phone after loading up Odin and holding the 3 button combo, Windows installs 2 more drivers - USB Device and then Unknown Device. Then nothing, Odin just sits there and no yellow box glows or a COM port showing the phone is connected. I have tried installing Kies originally and using the drivers from that with no success, then i used the standalone driver packages available from softpedia and several other websites with no luck. What i can't understand is, when i connect the phone to my computer in it's normal state it has no problems and allows me to transfer files, access both the internal and external SD but shows as an 'unknown device' in the Device Manager when in Download mode... Why??!!
Somebody please help me!
Which rom are you using?
Also did you try this on some other PC/Laptop?

Stock rom shouldn't have this problem.. you should either uninstall everything related to samsung from your computer and then start again or try connecting to a different PC.. you'll be able to find out whether this problem is just with the single system or not
I always run up Odin, then use the 3 buttons to get to download mode and then connect to USB port.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
I had the same problem, then I finally got it to work.
Try this:
First off, you may need to try several different versions of Odin. The one I finally got to work on my phone was V1.85. you can find a collection of different versions to download here: http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2011/05/odin-multi-downloader-flasher-program.html
Next, Load up Odin. Plug in you phone to the USB port with phone powered on, remove the battery on the phone. While holding the 3 buttons down (Volume up, down & power) put the battery back in. Wait for the text to start to scroll, let go of the buttons. When it gets to the menu, unplug the USB, then plug back in. The yellow box in Odin should say it's connected. If not you may have to do this a couple of times.
Now this is the part I can't remember...I think what I did from here is chose the recovery option in the menu. Sorry I don't remember exactly what i did, I was a noob when I did it, and I think I got lucky.
I do remember that Odin would not flash it until I finally got to the screen with the picture of the android in the construction hat, or something like that.
Maybe someone with more experience can help with this part.
I had the same problem
The fix is: Use the USB JIG to get into download mode.
Update your PC USB driver for SGS1. Follow the OP on this link:

[Q] Cm bootloops, odin dont detect phone

Hello guys.
I got a galaxy s (GT-I9000) from someone, so don't know what theyve been doing with it. Anyway, when I try to turn the phone ON, either it goes to the cyanogen mod splashscreen and reboots, and does that on a loop. Or it simply doesnt turn on. I cannot get into recovery mode, however I can get into download mode. I usually have to pull the battery a few times before I can either turn it on or get into download mode. Yesterday, when I plugged it in USB while OFF, no indication of charging (atleast visual) on screen was visible. Today, I plugged it in USB while phone was OFF and the battery indicator is seen, but battery si empty and only white "cirsle" is on middle, doing nothing. It stays that way for about 20-30 seconds, then the screen goes black, and only the white circle thingy is seen for a few seconds, then goes back to battery with that circle.
Anyway, when I got it in download mode a few times, I tried to plug it in PC to do something with ODIN, but it doesnt detect it. Windows says "USB Device Not Recognized" with the yellow triangle. I searched threads here and on google, and tried all I could think of.
So, I tried to reinstall drivers atleast 3 times, rebooting the PC in the process, cleaning the registry each time. Tried all of my 6 USB ports on PC. Tried 2 USB cables.
I had a galaxy s before, and setup on my PC was fine (so the drivers, cables, usb ports) were all OK, I could use odin and all. Thats why I dont think the problem is on my PC, or I must be missing something.
I have win7 x64 for the record.
I would just like to get this phone to work, any suggestions?

as far as I know
I will probobly try to get phone recognized by odin on a win XP pc today or tommo. IF that wont work, I read about something that JTAG could help me.. Can anyone confirm?
I'm having exactly the same problem actually. My son's S1 was running an old version of DarkyROM (back from when it was mine) and it got a bit messy so I decided to run it up to a CM9 nightly. Ran the Heimdall stuff as per instruction, got CM9 up and running but hosed it when I tried to flash the Google Apps package. From thereonin, formats and clearing everything leaves it upbootable but recovery and download are easily accessible. Odin just doesn't see it though.
Cause?
---------- Post added at 02:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:45 PM ----------
Oh yes, I might add that I can still mount by USB and upload ROMs etc. however trying to reinstall CM9 now gives me a Status 7 error and kicks me out. Grr.
---------- Post added at 03:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:46 PM ----------
Possibly solved. Go here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/41704-cant-install-cwm-recovery-on-my-rooted-galaxy-s2/
Heimdall seems a little picky, so if it throws up an error when everything seems fine then run zadig.exe in the /drivers folder of the Heimdall install, Options > List All Drivers, select Samsung USB Composite device in the dropdown and Install/Replace the driver. Do this in download mode. Then use the Heimdall frontend to push the stock ROM to your phone as per that link.
Yep. Just checked. Phone now booting. Give me a shout and I'll help you do exactly what I did.
I can now confirm that the PC setup, drivers, cable and pc usb ports are all fine. Had another GT-I9000 from a friend and odin connected instantly, could flash stuff no problem.
So on my GT-I9000 something else must be the problem. Can anyone give me another option or is the JTAG my only option?
So when I turn the phone ON, "GALAXY S CyanogenMod" appears and loops... I cant get into recovery using VOL+ ; power ; menu (or any other button combo, must have tried everything) but I can get into download using VOL- ; power ; menu... But if I connect phone to PC, odin dont see it and windows says "USB Device Not Recognized".
I've heard of people getting connected with nexus drivers, who knows what was on the phone before right.?
Sent from my I9000 running JW5 with Dmore3.3 and Semaphore 2.7.4
When you press volume down + Home button + power on then you get the Download screen on the phone. However, that does not allow Odin to detect the phone and make the COM box turn yellow. You also need to press the volume up in order to activate the Download mode and turn the COM box yellow.
OKAY I have an update!!
I sent the phone to be JTAG(ged). I have no idea what they did, but the phone boots up now! I can use it normal, I can go to stock recovery or to download mode.
However, I have a new problem now. I cant connect the phone to PC with usb cable, it doesnt detect it. The phone makes the "sound" when I connect the usb cable, battery icon gets that electricity power icon, so it chatges, but on windows I get "USB device not recognized" with yellow triangle.
I tried it with USB debugging on AND off, I tried all 3 modes in usb settings (mass storage, kies, media player) and always same result.
Tried to connect while in download mode, even pressed volume up while connected (once tried to hold vol up, made no difference). Odin dont detect it, and windows says "USB device not recognized" with yellow triangle.
What could be the issue here? What else can I try? I will point out that PC setup should be fine (tried another I9000 from a friend worked no problem) but just in case, I will uninstall drivers, wipe registry, install new drivers, try every usb port and 2 usb cables to try to get it connected.
Any ideas?

PLEASE HELP, Computer is not recognizing my Galaxy S

Just got my phone into download mode after using the jig, and i have been able to connect to my pc before i seriously F'd my phone by messing with a setting in cwm. I have downloaded and redownloaded drivers from samsungs website, along with installing Kies and that does not recognize my phone. (also i would like to add i am unable to access the phone since it wont turn on without the jig, without jig it just goes into a boot loop.)
THis is what happens when i plug my phone into the computer:
plug in usb (to computer and phone)
let it do its thing to recognize device...
pop-up stating "unknown device" so i click it.
then right-click the unknown device which opens up another window
from this menu it shows Install driver, Update driver and 3 other options.
when i press install driver and update driver, it tells me that the driver is already installed in "device unknown."
At this point i throw computer at wall after 2 days of trying to figure this out.
so messed around and the problem only happens when it is in download mode. but when it is not in download mode it shows up but no use to me because i am trying to flash it to stock. soo i dont know why the error 43 only shows up when in download mode. any help would be great.

Just follow this to update the drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27205737&postcount=4571 , same thing as what you have done earlier but this time , when it searches for new drivers, you can do the selection for it.
But first reboot your PC after pulling out power cord ...and try the quick solutions first
Ok sen, so i tried to install the driver manually but i am stuck at the part where i have to install something on my phone to allow it to sync with the computer, since my phone will not even boot up. I am starting to think my dear Capi is going to be a paper weight =(

Solution: Recovering from soft brick

I faced a unique problem today...
1. Got a notification to update Super Su
2. After updating, went to the app and it asked for updating binary...clicked Ok
3. Asked which method to use- Normal or CWM/TWRP...clicked CWM/TWRP
And all hell broke loose...the phone rebooted and kept stuck at Samsung GT-N7000 screen
Tried booting into recovery using the Vol Up+Menu+Power Button but failed to boot into recovery and always booted in the same GT N7000 screen
In short my custom recovery was messed up...
The above may not be a huge problem for people frequenting these forums and having basic google search finesse, but still it took me more than 3 hours to un-brick my phone after trying several combinations and permutations, so to the benefit of other members here's my simple solution:
1. Check if you can get into download mode by using Volume Down+Menu+Power Button
2. If not, your problem might be more serious and you should keep searching for a solution...best of luck!
3. If you can get into download mode, fine ...lets continue...
4. Prepare your PC for flashing a custom recovery via PC Odin:
a. Download PC Odin: I used Odin 3 V 1.85
b. Download a custom recovery: I used Philz 5.03
c. Uninstall Kies and Samsung Drivers from your PC (do it, it worked for me!)
d. Install latest Samsung Drivers afresh
e. Eject and physically remove all USB connected devices from your PC
f. Disable any antivirus software
5. Now get to download mode on your handset- after Volume Down+Menu+Power Button- on the next screen press Vol Up key to enable download mode. Do not connect phone to PC yet.
6. Run Odin as administrator. Let the app window come up on your screen.
7. Connect the original Samsung USB cable to the USB port at the back of your PC- this is to ensure it gets connected to the motherboard USB slot directly- please do this- critically important- at least in my case. For a laptop, I guess any port will do.
8. Connect your phone to the PC using USB cable
9. The ID:COM indicator on the PC ODIN window should turn yellow in a few minutes
10. Do not click on any buttons on ODIN Window- Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Timer should be checked and everything else should be left unchecked.
11. Click on PDA tab on ODIN and browse to the custom recovery tar file, select it- it should now appear under PDA tab.
12. Click on start and let ODIN do its thing...
13. Disconnect the phone after successful reboot.
The above steps helped me recover my soft-bricked phone.
I understand you should follow the steps verbatim to use this method...believe me I have tried several iterations- using front USB port, trying without disconnecting all other devices from USB port, without uninstalling Kies, et al...and failed everytime.
I hope this helps you.

Hard brick help 911

I'm in a big predicament. A few weeks ago I installed the MOAR ROM on my Note 5. After installing this ROM I was no longer able to connect my phone to PC. I tried a Windows 8 PC which says I have an unrecognized USB device plugged in. I tried going into Developer settings to set USB mode to MTP but the option didn't exist. I had all USB drivers installed as well. My wife's phone is recognized no problem. When plugging the phone into my linux machine absolutely nothing happened. It used to show the phone in the left navigation panel in my window manager but after installing MOAR ROM it was no longer detected.
Anyway, today I was trying to play Cartoon Wars 3 and since my phone is rooted it wouldn't let me play. I decided to go into the Super User app and disable it to see if the game would work and it didn't. When I went to re-enable the app it said installation failed and asked me to reboot. I clicked reboot and was sent into a boot loop. I thought okay no big deal, I'll just restore a backup in TWRP. When I go to restore the backup and select the backup file it asks which partitions to restore, but there are no boxes to check. It usually has options like system and data but now it's just blank. I tried a factory reset and I'm still in a bootloop. I'm at a complete loss. I don't know what else to do. I've tried download mode and everything but no matter what I do my phone isn't detected by my pc.
I appreciate any help. I don't know what to do. I'm out of a phone right now and don't have a backup. Not to mention I'm in between jobs right now and can't afford a new one right now.
Just flash a stock rom from sammobile.com
Pre req:
*Odin(any vers)
*Stock rom
Steps
*Extract the downloaded stock rom in your PC
*In twrp wipe everything except internal, then boot in to download mode.
*Once in download mode, connect your phone to your pc, then open Odin.
*In Odin, check the "AP" section and locate the downloaded stock rom(the extracted one)
*Hit start.
Hpe that helps

Thank you for your reply but it seems you didn't read my post. My phone is not recognized by any pc.
What is the terminal command to restore a backup? That's pretty much my last ditch effort.
Well I broke my recovery so I'm screwed. I contacted Samsung and they said they would service it for free. Wish me luck.
What would cause the phone to stop being recognized by the PC? I narrowed it down to the MTP software or the micro usb charge port. My Windows computer says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux box does nothing. No USB devices are listed when I run lsblk.

when your phone is in download mode,it doesn't work to connect it with samsung kies on your pc?
You could try using the Kies software to reload the stock firmware. Here's an overview of what to do:
- if you don't already have the Kies software installed on your PC, download it (just search Google) and install it. The first time it runs it'll update itself to the latest version so make sure you run it once before proceeding.
- put your phone in Download mode: with the phone completely off, press and hold the Volume Down and Home and Power buttons simultaneously, and release them all when you see the Samsung splash screen
- connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable that came with the phone
-- if you've never had the phone connected to your Windows-based computer before, you'll see messages about installing drivers, etc - just wait until this is done (may take 5 or 10 minutes) [I don't know what happens if you have a Mac - it probably just works]
- in the Kies software, select the second item in the Tools menu and just follow the prompts to enter the model number (in CAPS) and IMEI/Serial Number (both found under the battery - it's ok to remove the battery at this point)
- the Kies software should start downloading the correct firmware for your phone from the Internet; once that's done (depending on your Internet connection speed) it'll begin downloading that to the phone (this probably takes 10 minutes or so)

Kies doesn't work either. I already tried that. When I hook up the phone It says "Device Descriptor Request Failed". It used to connect to my computers until I put MOAR ROM on the phone. Since then it stopped being recognized by my computers. There's either something wrong with the connection or something got corrupted.

What have you already tried?
- are you sure you're using a data cable and not a charging-only cable?
- have you tried a different computer?
- have you installed the Kies software?
- what does Device Manager show when the phone is connected?
- assuming that the phone is working normally, does the phone show anything when you connect it?
- do you have try windows 8 or 10?
can be you found a solution in this forum

I've tried 4 different cables. My wife's S5 works perfectly fine on all computers. I have tried in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. I've also tried in Linux Mint. It used to work until I installed MOAR Rom. Windows says Device Descriptor Request Failed. Linux doesn't do anything when hooked up. lsblk doesn't show the device either.
I have a bit of an update. Apparently something happened with all my data cables. I hooked up my wife's phone the other day and I was all of a sudden receiving the same error as the note 5. I went out and bought a new data cable and now her phone connects again. I'm waiting for the Note 5 to charge up so I can try Odin. I'll post back my results.
I apologize to those who told me it was the cable. I just didn't see that it was conceivable that all 4 of my data cables were all of a sudden damaged. Never underestimate the ability of children to destroy every working cable you own.
Well I'm still getting the error. I have some usb cables coming in the mail so once i try those out I'll get back to everyone.

Were you able to fix your issue. I have the same issue. Note 5 N9208, I can get into Recovery (TWRP) and Download mode, but can not boot. The USB connection is showing USB Device Descriptor failed. I have tried 5 different cables and Windows 7/10 Ubuntu and cant get the phone to show up on the PC. I also have changed the USB port of the phone. Any insight would be helpful.

I ended up trying to replace the port and accidentally cut the ribbon for the LCD screen. Ended up getting a new phone.
