I'm running Serenity 6.3 and Corn Kernel 7.06. Just happened suddenly today. Noticed the Voodoo Icon is on and headphones weren't plugged in. I've rebooted the phone twice, and cleaned out the headphone jack for lint...
Any ideas?
You know what that's never happened to me with my captivate but my Eternity had that issue. I was told to "simulate phone sex" with a pair of headphones and it'll fix it, but it didn't work for me. But it might be worth a shot. Basically get a pair of headphones and rapidly insert and removed the jack

Does the phone function properly with the icon up? I've had it happen but phone acts normal, just Voodoo messing up (app).
Ext4 or rfs file system?

Weirdest thing. I installed recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1-cyan.img again and immediately loading up my existing OS, I found I couldn't hear out of the phone's ear piece. The back speaker worked.
I eventually got it working by loading up the music app and plugging/unplugging in headphones a few times. Typically the music will pause when you pull out your headphones. It appears this "sense" is broken. So it just thinks my headphones are always plugged in. Sucks because the ear piece is muted thus useless for calls without a headset or using the back speaker.
Well I flashed a Mocado Sense rom, and noticed the headphone icon in the tray. I can't get it to go away. Tried same methods as before.
I've flashed back to Geo411gm's stock FRF91 rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184
Same thing. Advice?
[Update]
Wow. I Fixed it but I can replicated it easily. Seems it isn't properly detecting removal of the headset jack. I have to really tweak the jack to get it to start playing through the phones speakers.
Anyone else experience this?
Anyone?
Right now I'm flashing PASSIMG.zip for ERD79 to see if it was something to do with recovery image or custom firmware. I'm thinking it might be a hardware problem though which sucks.
I've used my headphones in the past without problem. I reboot my phone all the time too. Just seemed it started after the recovery image was loaded.
[UPDATE]
No i'm sittin' pretty at ERD79, downloading the FRF91 update as I type this and the headphone jack is still screwed up.
Calling Google.
[UPDATE 2]
Called Google and HTC. Getting an Advanced replacement next week sometime.
I have had my phone for about a month now and I absolutely have has no problems until last night. I went to plug it into my tape adaptor in my car and it would not switch to audio out. Out just plays through the speaker. Anyone having the same problem? Anyone with a solution? Much thanks.

I would like to add that I have tested the stock headphones with no luck.

Any updates? I'm having the same problem. It's frustrating. Last night I plugged it in and it played a second over the headphones then back to the phone's speaker. Now it only does the speaker. I'm hoping it didn't fry something inside the phone!
If you have not, try rebooting.
This used to happen on my iPhone and I'm sure happens with most other headphone jacks. They get dirty. There's no denying that. You could always get a can of air and spray it out a bit, making sure that you don't get the liquid in there or take a peice of paper and put it on the headphone plug and use that to kinda clean out the jack itself. It has worked for me several times otherwise I wouldn't reccomend it.
How crazy. I had the same problem - kept removing and reinserting the jack to no avail. Blew real hard in the jack, and now no problems...
Yeah, same problem here. I am not sure whether this is a ROM related issue or I have hardware problem. I am using Andromeda3.
This seems to be hardware related. The Jacks were not made for constant plugging and unplugging which I am sure alot do. To be honest not real sure why we even still have them.
Hi,
a few days ago the volume randomly became UBER low. Soo I thought of it as a problem in the firmware (darky's r4). That rom was kinda rubbish; so instead; I flashed dlev 5.0. Awesome rom by the way. And then, over night, when I woke up again; the volume became really low again.
I have no idea how to fix this, rebooting doesnt seem to help.
Anyone have any ideas?
Assuming you're on a kernel that supports the voodoo sound, you might want to try the voodoo control app (I believe it's in the Market). Once you have it installed, you can put a shortcut on your desktop to the headphone amp widget, and that will let you pull the volume up again.
Not a permanent solution, I admit, but probably quicker than digging down several menu levels.

I plugged in my headphones; and everything is fine.
So it seems like the problem is just with the loudspeaker.
I can't even hear when someone calls
You said you installed a new rom - by any chance, did you restore apps with Tibu? If so, did you restore any system data?
I only ask because if you had restored some system data, it might have restored a bad audio setting that is affecting the external speaker when the headphones aren't plugged in.
I know that as part of the Voodoo sound control, you can tell it to drop the volume level if there is a change in whether the headphones are plugged in or not (as an ear saver or to prevent blaring sound when the headphones become accidentally unplugged).
If you didn't do any restoring, I would just double-check the volume level that is set in the audio menu. If it's all the way up, and you're still having sound issues, then I think that a faulty speaker (like you suggested) is probably the case.

I had this problem starting on darky's rom. Didn't use tibu or any sort of backup software; installed everything fresh and new.
Checked audio levels; and everything is on max.
Where in voodoo do I tell it it lower volume when headphones are plugged in?
Thanks
Er.... the loudspeaker just randomly started working fine again.....
I bet it will become weird in a few minutes though :S

In the voodoo control app, if you have the "map volume keys hack" activated, two settings below that is "jack plug-in safety".
Every kernel supports voodoo sound!

Haw Haw Haw... I gave my phone a good spanking. Seems like something is loose near the back key/search key. A few good hits and the speaker works again.
Ha!

Nothing like a good dose of non-passive hardware reconstruction to get things working again.
Believe it or not this is actually abbery common problem with this phone. The speaker will stop...then you press firmly on the speaker then it starts again...

Hello I have cm10 with devil kernel amd installed voodoosound and volume blast as when suddenly all the apps got quiet. No sound st all. Turned out that either of the programs has switched my headphone/speaker recognition. When headphones are plugged in the phone is playing, when theheadphones are out , voodoosound turns on and you can turn the volume up and down wothout hearing any noise (as if it had headphones plugged in) any ideas how to solve this problem?
You must have the devil kernel for the i9000. Your screen rotation might be messed up also. You need to flash a kernel for the captivate, like devil.

THANKS!
For some reason I've never installed the cappy kernels but the i9000. So I've had that rotate screen weirdness for over an year.. tjanks a lot for opening my eyes!
For some reason, my phone seems to think that I have headphones connected all the time. If i plug headphones in, I get sound through them, but once I unplug them, it still carries on as if they weren't taken out (Poweramp pauses on headset disconnect - which it isn't), I have tried rebooting and it has had no effect. I'm on Crystal PA, if that helps. I have no idea whats triggered this, Ive been using Poweramp player on all my androids for a long time, I doubt the app is causing it. The speakers are just not switching back on after the headphones have been removed.
Could this be a hardware problem?
Probably. Are you using Viper Audio or have the FauxSound app installed? Check those apps.

Aha, never thought about that, I know Crystal PA has viper installed but Im not using it, I was using MusicFX, Ive switched to viper and installed the viper driver and i got sound out of the speaker for a few seconds then it went back to thinking there's headphones connected. This is such a random problem! I havnt touched any of the audio settings since I installed this rom about 2-3 weeks ago, just left things on default.
I think im going to have to wipe and reinstall a ROM and see if that fixes it, i semi messed up this install by trying out the Supercharger script which seems to have made my UI even more flakey rather than improving it.
I really dislike how every ROM Ive tried out on this phone lasts for a few weeks before it gets glitchy with UI crashes and general slowness. And this is not a dig at the devs at all, its not their fault, there is just something deep in this phone which seems to screw it up. The temptation to drive an axe through this phone is growing!
So I've just gone into recovery, wiped system, factory reset and wiped dalvik cache, installed FXP349 CM11 and the same issue is there, sound just wont stop outputting through the headphones, if I turn the ringer volume up, the phone outputs through the speakers, but if i get a call, the phone ignores the earpiece and automatically uses the headphones port to output (doesnt matter if the headphones are actually plugged in or not). I have to switch to speakerphone to hear what people are saying (it sounds very bad quality).
So i guess this means its a hardware problem, Im going to have to try and open up the phone, see if i can see anything broken in there.
Does anyone have experience with any of this?

This may sound stupid but its not just a bit of crap thats been compacted into the jack? I am having the same problem and suspect that may be the cause. I have had this problem before with a phone, but tried to get the foreign material out of the jack with a pin, I ended breaking the jack by pulling part of it out along with whatever was in there. I haven't attempted to clean out my sp's jack yet but am sure thats what it is.

Well this was my first idea, I tried spraying compressed air into the jack hole but nothing came out, I also tried a cotton swab in the hole - again nothing. I cant see anything foreign in the hole, so Im thinking the port itself is broken in someway, outputs fine but the port just isn't detecting me unplugging headphones. Ive looked at a dis-assembly guide but it means taking off bits of protective film which I don't know if you can just stick them back on.
Im going to make a nandroid backup of my phone in its current state on the latest CM build and then try going back to original Sony software with an FTF, just to see being put back to stock state will change anything. (my friend thinks its some kind of low level software problem). I dont have high hopes but its worth a shot.
EDIT: So moving back to full stock Sony software with an FTF of 12.1.A.1.205 firmware has had no effect, this must mean its a hardware issue.
So weirdly today, after plugging my phone into a car aux cable and playing some music through it, it magically fixed itself? it snowed a bit the other night and i got pretty soaked by it cycling to work so I think it could have been moisture in the phone or something, its the only explanation I can think of. Its working again now.
