Hi all.
I'm getting my NC in 2 days, and I'm looking to make sure I've got my ducks in a row so I can root it right away when I do get it. Here is what I have resource and hardware wise. Can any of you that have done this already tell me if I'm missing anything?
I have:
- Nook Color (Soon!)
- 16gb SD card
- Card reader
- Windows 7 PC
- This guide from Nookdevs (nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting)
- Patience
Am I missing anything? With what I have I should be able to sit down and root it as soon as I have the device, correct?

Sounds about right to me. I had the biggest pain in the ass trying to install ADB. It eventually started working, but I have no idea how or why haha.
Perfect. So there should be a USB cable in the box with the Nook then? I dont need to buy any cabling separately or anything?
If so I guess I just get to sit on my hands for a couple days!

Well, I am working nights this week, so if I *do* miss any hardware I'll be stuck until I can get to a store after the holidays.
Also, it's my first time rooting/jailbreaking anything so I want to make sure I'm aware of what I'll need. I'm not an idiot, (I work as a systems analyst) but it's still a new process for me.
I'd grab a linux bootdisk, if possible. The main reason is that after rooting the nook, it can be hard to get your sd card back to the proper size (it will register as a 40mb device). Win7 wouldn't see the remaining 7.96GB of my device, but ubuntu's Disk Utility did just fine.
That's weird... did the nook still detect the correct size? If you loaded more than 40mb of data on there then put it into the nook what happened? Once you detected the correct size in Linux were you able to access the full card from windows, or have you had to load all your data onto the card via linux since then?
Honestly I dont even really care if the SD card bricks after I'm done with it. I'm getting one just to root the device, (USB key or cloud storage for me thanks) and I guess for extra storage on the Nook itself afterwards. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll look into that solution if I need to.
you can't load more than the 40MB that windows sees, until you fix the partition table of the SD card. It may be due to the software I used to write the image (I think it was Win32 Disk Imager, recommended on nookdevs).
Either way, it's not hard to load up an Ubuntu liveCD, go to System -> Administration -> Disk Utility, select the SD Card, delete the partitions, and then create a new partition (FAT32, I believe), and then re-load it to the nook. It took less than 10 minutes to get my SD card back to the correct size.

Just use the nook itself to format the microSD and it will read the proper size afterwards. It worked for me anyways.

Seconded. A linux distro is always handy, but unnecessary for the partitioning
I was going to mention the re-formatting of the SD card quirkyness since that was an issue for me, but I see that's been covered already
Oh, and patience is really not something you need much of for this. If you follow the instructions on nookDevs, it's a completely painless process. Seriously.. they've made it that frakkin' easy.

Do you know if the "Install ADB" step is absolutely neccesary? Or is it just Optional? That step looks the most intimidating.

Note: For users who have failed at implementing the instructions below several times, the NookColor community reccomends that you use market and download adb wireless, and perform your adb work over the wifi connection to the NC rather than painfully trying to install and modify the drivers over and over. If you would prefer to do that in the first place rather than the instructions below, we won't be insulted.

So... does that mean I can just use Auto-Nooter, then grab the ABD app from the marketplace and it automates everything else? Or am I mis-reading this?
Alright, so I'm 100% brand new to the Nook. Infact, I don't even have it yet, but I'm buying it tomorrow (3/3)
If I'm going to use honeycomb on it, do I just simply pop in the SD card and it's ready to go?
Do I need to root it before hand or is it already rooted?
How do I get GApps and Market running?
I honestly looked around a bit but I'm terribly confused. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Also, I can't even seem to get the IMG burned onto my microSD. Win32 Disk Imager keeps spitting back that the SD card doesn't have enough space, but it's an 8GB card with nothing on it, so it has plenty.
1) No, you don't have to root first - just pop in the uSD card and you are good to go.
2) To install Market and GApps you will have to install ADB on your primary machine first (which can be a PITA). There is all sorts of help around to do that. I downloaded a script (search for HoneyGapps.v2 here) that did the install for me in one step.
3) From what I understand the image is too large for Win32 Disk Imager. I used WinImage and it worked fine.
BTW - I am loving HC - I've adopted it completely. My major problem is that many apps are not showing up in the Market, even though they were installed and ran fine on my rooted 2.1 system. I think it is because the Market does not recognize the device name under HC 0.4.
How do I use WinImage to do that?

First you use winImage and click disk then restore image. Make sure you have all files selted when looking for the file to restore. Are you going to install it to internal or on a USB card ?
Trying from SD card first unless it's too slow. If I want to install on internal, how do I backup my original Nook data?
Also, I figured out WinImage, I'm burning it now. I used another program, but that didn't do anything when I powered on the Nook. I shouldn't have to do -anything- before booting from the SD, right? The SD version is kinda slow and if you look there is a Honeycomb EEMC V4 install that has the google apps and other goodies Installed. It has all you need already put in it. In the post you will find all the links and info needed to install. You just mount your nook like normal to your computer and copie the files from internal memory.

Haha, I had just started reading that a second ago actually. It lists a lot of problems. Are those problems present in the SD card version as well? Also, is Froyo more stable?
I have been running version 2 for a lil while and it runs smooth. I haven't had any real issues from it. I put it on my wife's nook also. It runs smooth and every app I have installed runs with no issues.
OK, I'm gonna try the script for GApps in a second. Where can I find the drivers for the Nook? I already have ADB installed, I've rooted 3 phones before this, so I got ADB usage down...
EDIT: Also, where can I find info on partitioning the SD card so I can still use it?
Honeycomb is built for tablets and sems more fluid. All are really development builds. We will all be waiting on the devs and google for the actual honeycomb
Which are you going to do the Sd or Internal ? If you load the version 2 internal it already has the Google apps included.
I haven't found a way to backup my original Nook data before installing it on internal. SD card works just fine, as long as I can find a way to partition it so I can still use it as an SD card. Either way, I still need the ADB drivers and the one thread I found so far has a broken link. Boo!
If you install it to internal you can then reformat the sd card and use it as normal.
OK, but then how do I back up the current internal memory and I still need a link to the ADB drivers in case I want to run off SD.
Use my USB mass storage utility (see dev). Make .tar files of internal data and system content.
To restore extract content back onto data and system.
Of course, if you get adb working, make dd images of partitions.. more conventionnal backup than above..

All your questions in this thread can be answered by doing a little work searching around... you shouldn't expect a personal tutor...
If you put a little of your own effort, you will learn much more than following someone's instructions.

as the title says im new to the nook..
first off id like to say hello to all and thank everyone in advance for the all the hardwork helping new guys like me get use to a new device.
i have a little knowledge on flashing roms and such on the droid x
i wish to root and install app market..
i know in droid its bootstrap recovery im guessing clockwork is the same ..where do i get the files for this
also im running 1.1.0 is that the latest version ?? and if not how do i update that software??
seems like most of the rooting is done off a sd card i have a 2 gig and 4 gig class 4 card to use .. what other stuff am i going to need like files and such
i know about the windiskimg32 one i have already downloaded it (unless there is a different version for 64 bit windows vista) but im unsure if sd is the best way or can i swap roms like on my X

Welcome -- this is a great place to learn a lot. If you just want to root and get google apps (including the market) search this forum for "autonooter", a wonderful package that will make is easy and has everything you need. Make sure that your Nooks current software matches the version of autonooter you use. Once you've done that, take some time and read through some of the threads both here and on the sister forum "nook color android development".
You may opt to use one of the alternate (and higher level) versions of Android available and run that off of one of your SD cards. That way you don't even have to root the Nook. Nook's boot first from the SD card, so you can do all sort of fun things.
The other advantage to not rooting just now is that B&N is reportedly pushing an update soon.

Welcome! I'll tell you, I've been an android user/rooter for almost two years and only found this site aabout a month ago and have been obsessed since!
To me, since you've rooted before, the best way to go is straight to CM7. It converts it to a full tablet and is the best of the roms now (full video support, bluetooth, flash, etc.) The wiki on the cyanogenmod website is a great way to go from stock to fully rooted with CM7 installed and is the way I'd recommend for anyone who can understand it.
As for what you'll need...nothing else really, except the root and/or rom files, which can be found usually in whatever tutorial you're using.
Autonooter is good if you're going to stay stock rooted, but that's it's only advantage.
1.10 is the latest.
I've been running using the sdcard rather than flashing the internal memory, and found it to work well. One advantage is that you don't lose the built in reader app (which is more capable than the one available in the market). Personally I've had the best luck with Customized Nookie Froyo- tried CM7 but it was flaky. Choice of sdcard does seem to affect things too- some folks have reported problems with class 10 cards and some with cards > 8g. Class 6th 8gb cards seem to be the least troublesome.
One tool you may find useful is gparted. You can create a bootable usb key with that that will allow you to resize the last partition on the sdcard (the data partition, shows up as /sdcard). Many of the images are posted for 2gb cards, so if you install on a larger card you need a tool like that to resize the partition and make full use of your card.

Anyone else experiencing an issue with the micro sd slot after rooting? it wont read the cards, but it does notice when you remove an sd card. Is there a fix for that issue and has anyone else encountered it?

How do you know it is not reading the card? Have you looked at ext_sdcard to see of it is there?
And how did you root 2.0.4? Most folks get automatically updated to 2.0.5.

feel free to steal this little tip from me:
When starting from scratch after purposefully activating the 8 Boot Fail Safe, when it gets to the part where it's looking for an update, while its looking hold down "Power" and select OK to turn the device off interrupting the update process. When you turn it back on, you'll have to start the whole thing over again, but when it gets to the Update step it bypasses it thus cancelling out the 2.0.5 mandatory update. Now that you have 2.0.4 you can run your all-in-one and update cancel program before it has a chance to try updating again.
-Another helpful hint after reverting to stock firmware, turn off your internet until you run all the rooting software.

Your system after an 8 failed boot reset and before an update is 2.0.4? If it is, PM me as I would like to get a copy of your factory zip.
And you looked for ext_sdcard in /mnt?

I found it in mnt, man they really do everything strange on Nooks, haven't had one since the original Color. I see the problem. It's lacking any sort of permissions (read, write or anything). How do I get those to stick? since I've noticed things in Root tend to not stay permanent. and as for the PM, I'll get right on that. Thanks for all of your help.

SD cards do not let you make permission changes. I'm not sure why. Are you sure it does not have read write permissions? Can you create a file there?

I think I figured it out. It seems that the cwmearly builds damage the sd cards, but once reflashed with the ones on your post it gets read just fine. I wanted it fixed since I couldn't find my other SD cards and had to resort into turning a 32gb into a 4gb card to install some zips (lame) and I wanted to get it back to its 32gb glory. So by rewriting my card with your 4gb image and putting it in my nook it got read and then I just formatted it on the nook and it was back to normal, though I had another card with the cwmearly img on it and it was going back to its old ways and repeated the previous steps and it was fine. so CWMearly was the problem.
I don't know how to make a clean back up without my data on it so this one will have my personal info (no credit card info, obviously) but maybe with your skills you can scrub it out of it. I'm not that well versed in this kind of stuff. I have an above average knowledge of android, but not any real knowledge of developing or ADB.

No I don't want your backup, I want your factory.zip from partition 7. It won't have any of your stuff on it, it is just what comes from the factory. If you don't know how to get that, I can give you instructions.

I was tinkering round this morning and looked into my devices storage and saw that 27gb of 32gb were being used.
Did some math on my own:
Apps: 2.82gb
Music: 3.23gb
Photos: 1.12gb
Other: 19.85gb:
-Nandroids: 9gb
-Titanium Back up 1gb
2 roms: 1.5gb
Somewhere in the "Other" category something is eating up 9gb of space. I used my file explorer and couldn't pin anything that big down. I am going to offload my nandroids but I shouldn't have to.
Anyone else run into this or know what this 9gb "other" hog could be

Your 'other' is really suspicious. Mine is ~7GB. I'd do a factory reset, easiest way IMO.
If you're flashing roms or doing backups with any other apps (CWM or something). I'm guessing they would go there. Check your download folder as well if you do a lot of downloading.
You may also try installing airdroid and using the desktop filemanager to whittle down your list as well.
Download Disk Usage. It shows you visually whats taking up space. It's amazing.
Thanks for advice using disk usage. I don't know why I didn't reinstall that sooner.
I did some digging and searching around the interwebs and found out this is a known issue. Other people have noticed it in droves. From my early intel: when you delete files you lose data blocks and they are marked as bad. If you ran dsk chk they would come up as corrupt. People are losing more storage space than I did.
2 solutions came up:
1. Reformat your SD: Copy everything to PC>reformat>copy everything back....time consuming but worked from what I could tell
2. There is an update that has been released overseas(asia, india, etc) that seems to fix this issue. It's a known HTC ONE issue so maybe someday I will see an update that will fix it.

Also check if you are using Google play music and have a lot of playlists pinned. I believe that and movies actually show there in other.

I couldn't just let this rest. I like to flash roms and knew I would need strorage space for some nandroids in the future. Here are somethings I tried and had issues with.
Formatting the SD card: I could not for the life of me get this done.
-Nothing in TWRP
-Couldn't do it in windows
-Couldn't mount the sd in TWRP or regularly and get it to show up in windows file explorer as a drive to format
Eventual solution:
I formated the data in TWRP using the format data option. I copied everything over before I did it. When I came back I flashed a new rom and was still missing 7 gb. No apps, no music, nothing. SD card was empty still only showed 25 gb available.
Conclusion: I think I have some bad sectors in their somewhere. I read that I could go back completely to stock and try to star this whole process over.
One question: Can I unlock using HTCdev as many times as I want or is it a one time thing?
Anyone else in the same boat?

If you go back completely to stock, your bootloader will probably still be unlocked (unless you relock and use an RUU). The code you got to disable your bootloader the first time around will work however many times you want. To be honest though, I wouldn't be surprised if that 7GB were used by the system ROM/frameworks and I'd be even less surprised if you still found files on your SD card in a .Trashes folder or something from earlier. Formatting data tends to leave weird remnants all over the place.
Also, +1 to the Google Music thing. Definitely shows up in other for me.

-Dont use any Google Music services
Really wish I could truly reformat/check for bad sectors to find out if it's corrupt or just buggy...

Really wish I could truly reformat/check for bad sectors to find out if it's corrupt or just buggy...

Do you have a custom recovery? If so, try running Fix permissions. It'll tell you for one if it hits any errors (because it finds files it can't change perms for), and may help with the issue (or use the Fix permissions tool in ROM Manager if you'd rather not use recovery).

-Ran fix permissions in recovery: no errors everything went as it should
-Ran fix persmissions in viper rom: terminal settings: no errors everything ran as it should
Is there a way to reformat the SD card/partition? I don't think the TWRP method really reformatted it. Just erased everything.
Clockwork gives you the ability to set a swap partition but not a true reformat

Have you tried TWRP's advanced wipe? If you haven't, it's worth a shot, but I cannot stress enough that you should be careful. This is exactly the kind of problem that you can bork your phone trying to fix for no good reason.

Your exactly correct on the last point. I am going to keep listening and looking. I think/hope/pray the update the internationals got can be applied some way in the future and may help out a bit. Just going to have to utilize some cloud storage a little better.
it's not totally/technically broke and I am not going to do more harm.

I've been having the same problem, but notice something interesting. My phone said I had almost 20GB in the other category, and I didn't know why.
I downloaded disk usage to get a detail view of what's going on in my storage and I was able to clear 12GB with just deleting old downloads, TWRP backups, Titanium Backups. Still cleaning house.
Also after doing some research, the data that's stored by your apps (ext. PS3 Trophies is a 8mb download, buts it's total size is 31mb on the phone) is counted in the Other section and not part of the app data. So the more apps u have like this installed, the more likely the Other section will balloon in size.
Remember, when u remove and app, it's stored data is still in the phone storage.

I use disk useage but it doesn't even show my max storage space as 32gb. It shows 26gb. See Screenshot: So I have 6gb that aren't even registering as available storage. I was trying to clean out some old app storage but the space they use is so small. Would they be worth it? I think the fact I am missing 6 gb is more troubling.
I could be wrong, but doesn't the phone only have 27GB of formatted space?

any device with internal memory will lose some. this is the exact reason i havent gotten one yet bc im praying that sprint will get the 64gb version. i will say that if they are going to advertise a device at xyz gb then they should build in the extra needed for system so we actually get what we pay for. cloud storage and otg are there but still a slight pain in the butt.
guess ill be holding on to my evo lte for another yr or so.

Is OTG standard in Android? Does the One need to be rooted?
