[Q] Port ICS from Sensation? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

so today news broke about the HTC Sensation getting an ICS update "soon". I bought the HTC Vivid the day it came out and I'm coming from a Samsung Captivate. when i had my captivate there was a lot of dev with porting from other phones either the I9000, I896, etc etc. i was wondering since I'm new to HTC i was wondering how hard it is to port roms from other phones i.e. the Sensation to the Vivid?
just kind of food for thought

To answer your question, yes, it can be done, but Sense can only be ported to Sense devices. Look at the Inspire, several of its Roms are actually based and ported from the Sensation XL. Certain aspects of each phone would require fixes to get them to work like they came from HTC for the phone they are getting ported to. Trust me, if there is a dev with a Vivid or Raider and they want to give us a port of another HTC phone's Android and Sense versions, they will get is done and you will see it in the Dev section. Once a dev begins work on it they will know soon enough if it will be hard or easy and what will be required for it to work.

Question: HTC Incredible port to N1

So, I was wondering with the HTC Incredible out for Verizon right now, would it be easier to port Sense over from that to the N1 than from the Desire since they share many of the same parts? I know the Desire port is almost fully functional, but missing some things, would the same occur with the port from the Incredible. Or does it matter that it's CDMA?
I would love to have Sense on my Nexus, but these questions are moreso just me trying to get my head around how this port thing works.
N1 has more things in common with desire than incredible.
Aside from a few minor hardware differences (physical buttons, no noise cancelling mic) the desire is basically the same phone as the N1 but with different software and a non unlockable bootloader.
you should be saying HD2 port to incredible or visaversa

It would be more difficult since the N1 is closer to the Desire than the Incredible. Also, the Desire rom has already been available for months.

Why not try the Desire rom that's available now?
Starting from square 0 on Incredible would mean a port that's less functional than the Desire rom for at least many months.
Good info to know. I have no idea why I thought the Incredible was closer than the Desire... me being stupid apparently...lol. And I do plan on trying the Desire port, my N1 just arrived today. I will keep it stock for a bit just to make sure it doesn't have any of those pesky issues that can be fixed via warranty, but I'll get the itch to root and ROM it soon enough. My FUZE didn't last very long before I did so... I doubt this will either...haha.

Though I do wonder, if the Incredible's version of Sense is a newer/updated version of the UI, then would we expect to see those changes implemented in the Desire? Hence making another version of the ROM closer to what the Incredible has.
I'm assuming somebody will release the Incredible ROM more to make the current Sense ROM better.
Just a guess...

BELL Incredible S or Atrix

i need to upgrade my htc legend with BELL and i have the choice of Atrix or the Incredible S from BELL. I'm torn between a stable HTC with Sense UI or future proof and more powerful phone with motoblur crap. I posted the question in the Atrix and now here to have both perspective.... i hope its ok
Coming previously from HTC Touch where i first experienced Windows Mobile computing, the ability of changing ROMS, then ported ANdroid ROMS which imo the best experience of them all with all the hacking/mod abilities...
So now my only criteria is the phone must be an Android phone... because it has such a large user based and hacking community in general...My current HTC Legend, is a great phone especially after the Froyo update, very responsive but its lacking the storage capcity...
This is why i'm changing my HTC Legend which is still stock ... i read about rooting it but it was a bit too complicated to root it without going through hoops and loops . So I didnt bother... and im running out of space
I've read a few reviews about incredible S and atrix... and although the atrix looks superior on paper... i wasnt impressed by the motoblur and the few videos i saw...
The Motorola Atrix hardware is futureproof but only if Motorola decide to release new upgrades to take advantage of the hardware... i heard some bad things that based on history, i shouldnt bet on getting upgrades... is this true? If i'm not getting the upgrades from Motorola, this is why i think the hacking community plays an important role to get the best out of this wonderful piece of hardware ( like the HTC Touch in its time ). Apart from the wonderful beedfed up hardware ... i havent seen anything good... in fact i saw a few threads about rebooting problems, issues...etc and bloatware , not being able to install non market apk and motoblur ( which i only saw in the 1st generation motorola blur in the android 1.5 phone cant recall the name of the phone)
The Incredible S seems to be a more stable phone and i personally like the SENSE UI and HTC in general. I havent seen a lot of negative reviews or problems. COming form the HTC family, i tend to trust it more than Motorola. The 8MP cam is a plus but the inability to root is sad... at least some dev are working on it ...
Does the success of rooting the IS depend on the popularity of the phone ? I have the impression its because we have a few experienced guru but not enough to crack it ... or is this ROM too hard to find any weakness...
I ask myself the same question about 2 weeks ago (aslo with bell) and decide to go with the HTC incredible S. Like oyu said the atrix loog good on paper but that's it. (well on what i read) I have my Incredible for not even a weeks now and i'm loving it. I,m very satisfied by... i would say evrey part of it. Did not have any problem, enjoying all the apps and still looking for new tricks.
I honestly tink that the s-off and root will come just in time.
I have faith in the XDA family, and eventually this phone will get cracked. Here in the States, Verizon has released the HTC Droid Incredible 2, so that should also spur more work to get the S-off and rooting going. Its only a matter of time, and many other HTCs have been rooted in the past.

[Q] Not so many Incredible S users on xda?

I've moved across from the Desire forums and they're very busy, no doubt due to vast numbers of handsets being out there. The IS section looks fairly quiet in comparison, is that because of low sales on this model, or more the fact that the IS owners don't feel the need to root, mod etc?
it's a weird time right now for android phones....
Older phones are losing devs due to them moving on to newer phones, but there are so many newer phones that are actually good right now so dev support is widespread.
I would say it should pick up after a little while.
.
there is huge dev support for the IS becuase allt he euro devs are using IS and all the american devs are able to use droid incrediable 2's
look at our ROM index and its huge the phones only been out for 6 months (march it came out) and we got sense 2-3.5 being dev'ed on along with CM7 and other osap roms and MIUI

Do the IS and the Droid use the same/similar roms?

they're the same phone... just a different name because it is the US verizon version
I wouldn't flash a droid 2 rom onto the incredible though, different radios I think which could brick your device
Similar -- one is CDMA/GSM, the others are GSM only. Also, one has operator graffiti on it, the others don't.
This forum is not a high volume forum in my opinion. We have a few roms and a few devs but that's it. Look at the Desire HD forum. More devs, roms, and themes for their roms. Nobody does special themes for the Incredible S roms.

that other guy was right though, the incredible 2 forum looks a LOT busier
this phone seems to have slipped under most's radar, kind a like the Xperia Arc which is although a sex bomb but has no custom ROMs.
It's bc the roms we have do everything we need.
Sense? Go with revolution.
Sense 3? Do the add on for rev or use the less stable pyramid ports
Aosp? Miui and cm7 and other stock roms like rev no sense.
What else? It may seem less busy bc the progress was made on other devices then ported over.
Ie the desire hd, mytouch 4G, inspire, thunderbolt, etc etc etc have the same specs just different outside bodies.
So while its not bustling with chatter, its still good. Just my .02
I guess many users went for the DualCore phones, like the Sensation, LG Optimus and Galaxy S 2, that came out just after the IncS.
But there is still a lot of development for the IncS and som very skilled users/dev's in here ;-)
It is a very quiet forum for developing. Maybe because it was released when dual core phones were starting to kick off. So it ended up being a kinda meh device. I wish I still had my desire z but HTC stopped making it :/

Non-sense rom development?

Hi guys,
My beloved HD2 is on its way out and I'm thinking of replacing it with either a titan or the sensation XL. I prefer android to WP7 but I can't stand using HTC sense! I notice there's only one rom in development which seems to be a sense only version, is anyone working on aosp roms for this device? I understand that a custom rom wouldnt include the beats audio equalizer app which to be honest isnt a problem for me, I'm only interested in that big beautiful screen!

Get a Titan. Or a Galaxy Nexus My Nexus' screen makes the XL's look like turd. Out of the Titan and Sensation Xl, the Titan is better, more optimised OS for a single core processor.
This phone is still New. Soon it will be getting CM7 and miui support if it is popular enough
They are non sense ROMs

if you want different roms theres always miui or de-sensed just google them cant post links here
The other reason is because a lot of the devs who worked on this phone have move on to the HTC One or SGIII. This phone is over a year old, which is a lifetime in phoneyears, unfortunately.
this badass named mg2195 is deving a cm10 rom ^-^
Load of crap

Woahhh there don't get angry xD It's due to the age (most dev's want the newest and best phone) and also due to the fact that this phone just wasnt that popular...
If its not popular why is the HTC hd2 still getting development and that was launched waaaaay back. And how is this phone hard to dev for???

The phone is just full of shotty hacked up htc code. They just threw together a bit of everything to make it work, which kinda ruined it for everyone wanting to create custom non-sense based roms
Instead of posting multiple threads in here about why there aren't more ROMs, why not go talk to the makers of ROMs such as JellyBro and JellyBam to see if they will support our device, now that we're cm10 official. Or go create your own.
