step to enable non market apps
1. root the device with soc
2. install es file explorer give it root
3. go to /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.setting/databases from there copy setting.db to your sd card
4. mount sdcard to the pc
5. then open setting.db file with any sqlite editor software on pc
6. search for the name "install_non_market_apps" change its value from '0' to '1'
7. copy the edited file to its original location
you are done now you can install apps from outside market
(note: no option will appear in the settings but you can install apps)

Seems like a lot of work for something that is officially not an issue...
Update your os...you're on an old stock ROM, I'm guessing 2.2 kb1.
Gingerbread is available officially now, and has this option added back into the settings like it should have been all along. No need to even root if you don't wanna...
Just my couple of pennies.

Yeah, and official GB is only about a thousand times smoother than stock KB1 or JF6.

[Q] Stop Auto VZW Auto Update

I found how for the X2 but the instructions dont work for the Revolution.
Anyone know the way to stop it?
Thanks
Using root explorer goto /system/lib/libdme_main and add .bak to the end of it. You will keep bluetooth and no more update. Make sure you do NOT mess with anything else!

I deleted that file (adding.bak sounds much better) and it has gone away, just like mtmichaelson said.
Sweet thank. Ya on my droid 2 i stopped a bunch of stuff and just did the .bak so if i need it later i can just change it back.
Thanks
Just to double check, this works on revo phone.
When I acess file it has .so file type do I change .so to bak?
I just added .bak after the .so

Revolt - LTE
I'm not sure if this is related, but I noticed that after I flashed Revolt 1.3, I never see the "LTE" symbol in my notification bar. I'm in an LTE area, so I know it's available--does that mean my phone isn't running LTE anymore or is the symbol just not showing up on this ROM? I apologize in advance if this is a ridiculously misguided question--I'm new here and learning as I go.
By the way, mtmichaelson--I said this before and I'll say it again--awesome ROM! Thanks again for your hard work.

So, right now it is a .so file. Do I just add .bak to it, or change it from .so to .bak?
(Just want to be extra sure.)
Also,I would like to root my phone. I found a way that someone rooted theirs with their 2.2.2. Do you think I should root first, then change the file so it doesn't update? Or does it matter?
by the way, Here is the root I found(sorry it's a bit long):
"How to root your OTA Updated Revo:
This method requires you to downgrade your phone back to the V4 stock version. As of now, there seems to be no root process for the V6 update. This method has worked for me and I am also on a custom ROM that has been said to have some, if not most of the V6 updates included without the bloatware.
Step One:
- Be sure to get the following files:
---- LG VZW_United_WHQL_v1.2.0.exe
---- LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe
---- LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip
---- VS910.dll (required to use LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip)
---- VS910ZV4_04.S4_04.P58008.R5.user.tot
---- RevoToolkit-1.0.apk (This is untested by me but supposed to provide an easier method to install CWM mod vs the ADB method)
---- SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse (Includes the needed ADB program)
---- rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (The exploit needed to root revo, not necessarily found with SuperOneCLick)
---- RevoltRom1.3.zip (This is optional, but recommended to speed up your revo and also to comply with the original topic of this thread. It 'seems' to stop the OTA from 'trying' the update since it includes updated features. NOTE that I said 'seems'... Other things I did may be the actual result I haven't seen the OTA try to install...
Ok, so to start, you will want to be sure that you have the drivers on your computer (I'm using windows 7 x64), so that is what this method has proven to work on by me.
Be sure to install:
- LG VZW_United_WHQL_v1.2.0.exe
- LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe
Both may not be required, but I have both installed and things worked.
Then you will need to install:
- LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip
- VS910.dll (This is just copied into the folder LGNPST/Models. My install put the LGNPST program in C:\LG Electronics, not c:\Program Files (x68)... )
- You will run the LGNPST program, select the VS910.dll via Menu: File --> Select DLL.
- Then, in the bottom right of the LGNPST program, select BIN File (folder icon) to load the 'bin'.
--- This will require you to enter *.* in order to find the .tot file. Don't worry, this .tot file is what you need in the LGNPST Program.
- Once loaded and your phone is connected and recognized (Phone must be in 'Internet USB Mode'), hit the Start Button. This will begin the process of restoring your phone back to V4.
After that has completed, which takes a while, you will then need the SuperClick program to root.
- Copy, or verify, the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin file is located in the Exploits folder where you extraced SuperOneClick.
- Run SuperOneClick, Select the exploit pull down (which defaults to 'auto') and select the rageagainstthecage option.
- Press the Root button and let it do its thing.
--- If it fails, this is what I had to do.. Reboot your phone. While it is rebooting, have the SuperOneClick program ready and waiting for you to hit Root again. As soon as the LG Logo becomes animated, hit Root and let it try again (While it is rebooting). This seemed to get the read/write options to work, where failed. This possibly is part of the update that is sticking around to stop you from rooting. So, try a few times. If/when succeeded, move on to the next steps if you wish to have some of the update 'fixes' without the update and a faster custom ROM...
To install a ROM, you need to have CWM installed.
Two methods to doing so seem to exist:
- The method I used was at this link: [RELEASE][6-14-2011] CWM Ported to the Revolution 4G! - xda-developers
Follow that and you should have a backup original image and the new image to get CWM to work to install custom ROMs
- The OTHER method, which is UNTESTED by me, is to use a simple tool called RevoToolKit, which is and APK file that runs directly on your phone. If it works, which others seem to say it does, this would be the most simple form of installing CWM to your phone. Be aware that this app is small, but uses a downloader to install CWM, so you want to make sure you have a good internet connection or data connection...
After that, you will want to follow the directions for CWM (ClockWorkMod) at this link:
- [Rom][8-17-11]Revolt Rom 1.3 - xda-developers
After all that, you should have a rooted Revo AFTER you managed to do the update.
I included links to some instructions in order to shorten up this post and not 'copy' someone else's methods and be sure that you can give the credit to them. The only credit I deserve for this is a complete step-by-step, in one place procedure to get you back or to root your Revo if you did the update.
In time, I am sure that there will be a simpler way to root the OTA Update, but until then, this is working for me and hope that this helps clear up some issues for others that find it tough to get back to root after the OTA Update."
It then has the file links, but I cannot post them since I am a newb.
Thanks again!
I don't see a way for you to change the file from .so to .so.bak without having root as far a rooting you only have to downgrade if your phone its v6 if out is running v4 all you need to do is root it

Is there a way to do this without buying root explorer? I have bloat freezer so is there anything I can just freeze?
Thank You
*EDIT* just bought root explorer for $.99 through Amazon Appstore for those who still need it.
I'm on V4 and rooted back from V6 but it does not let me rename due to it being a read only file? sooo how do I add the bak? opened it with root explorer and it requested superuser privileges and I ok'ed it but when I go to /system/lib/libdme_main.so and try to rename it, it won't let me.

On the top right of root explorer is a "Mount R/W" button. Click that and it should let you make changes to the system.
Hope it helps

Remove ATT apps from V20P

Remove all the ATT software, boot image
To use this you first need to flash the ATT V20P firmware and root it, you don’t need to install Clockwork but I would suggest doing this and also performing a backup before running this.
Procedure
Make sure you have the latest LG drivers
Make sure you have USB Debugging turned on
Extract files to a folder
Run the batch file run.bat
Pick what you want to remove
Select 3 from the batch file to exit as this will reboot your phone which is required
If you decide not to remove the ATT software from your phone but still want to change the boot images then Gulliver's Travels will still be removed as I needed extra space in the system/apps folder to replace the poweroff.apk.
Any issues just re-flash or restore you backup.
APNs are removed in this clean up as they touch a lot of other functions, also the Contacts is still the AT&T contacts to keep the rom stable.

Good question and it really comes down to ease of use, easier to run one batch file than use root esplorer work out what you can and can't remove.
Also this adds in images for shutdown logos.
But real either way works.
OK. really is good for people with no knowledge and do not want problems. A round of applause to you

-Various applications
-System-Etc.-flex with multiple files according to your choice flex.xml will have used ATT rom-European (with the music widget is removed from the curtain) or use without music (data icon) etc ...
-Several apks
THIS ONLY WORKS WITH ROM YOUR OWN KERNEL AND BASEBAND

I also installed it the way the link you sent describes.
I will tell you that both versions are equally unstable on my phone. It will run but lots of FCs and having to clear cache. I don't think it's quite ready yet.
Works (sort off) for me. A replacement for rootexplorer can be ES file explorer (free). Solid looks better but doesn't work as well (for me at least).

Granted - it's designed for the S3 - far cry from the S1..
I'll check out your other method. I didn't have root explorer, so tried installing then making it a system app via TiBu then reboot recovery & fix permissions. Didn't work though. Got a warning 'running low on space' (or system memory) on boot and then FC'd. One time, I got through the setup prompts until the end and then got FC'd.
--
BTW - looking at the package name in TiBu said something about vlingo.somethingorother... so it's obviously something like vlingo which I didn't really ever use either. I do like the google voice to text transcription, but not sure how much better my life would be fulfilled by shouting 'Hey Cappy' at my phone all day.

[Q] Need help rooting

I've got a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 with:
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version S5830XWKT8
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-1190851 [email protected]#1 Mon Sep 3 16:00:05 KST 2012
Build number GINGERBREAD.BGKT4.
I want to root it so I can unlock it and delete some useless pre-installed apps.
I've tried to root it following quite a few tutorials here on XDA (including various zip updates) but all I got was a useless superuser app without root permissions.
I think that's because the version I have is no longer compatible with those methods, but I don't know.
So I want to ask: Is there any method, no matter how hard it is, able to definitely root a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 with android 2.3.6?
And in the case it isn't possible, do you know if I take it to one of those "repairs" shops they could at least unlock it? or do they use the same methods?
Thanks!

Well, I Installed CWM, tried Delete_thinkdroid.zip (didn't do anything. Think free office is still installed and working), upd_1.zip, acegingerroot.zip, gingerbred-2.3.6-root.zip, CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b84.zip, b84-fixed.zip and still no root.
Now, my phone boots with a blue triangle in the top left corner but that's all.
upd_1.zip gave the following error:
Code:

gingerbred-2.3.6-root.zip did the same but changing the name:
Code:

acegingerroot.zip and CF-Root-S5830-v3.7-b84.zip seemed to install correctly but with no effect.

no. that you need is to liberate memory space to push root files to /system
Blue triangle is good don't worry (cfroot kernel installed )
Cfroot b84 fix isn't flashable through CWM, normal that your device aborted the installation
Your error message is because your sdcard is corrupted, so copy all your data from your sdcard to your pc using an USB adapter.
Then format your sdcard using windows in Fat32 format (you can do it using your phone and selecting format your sdcard in settings )
Copy the files again and flash it when you have free space
I'm going to provide you a script to delete a serius app, wait a moment

Well it's here!
When you finish with your sdcard (format in Fat32) try the attached file and report then
1. Flash it "install form sdcard"
2. Then flash root.zip
It'll delete Thinkfree, it's enough.
I have prepared a script (EXTREME) that remove Maps, Gmail, Thinkfree, SamsungApps and Youtube All those apps can be downloaded from Google Paly Store

I had no boot animation problems, but anyway, done that.
A little problem i just noticed is that after reinstalling Gmail and Youtube (after deleting them with the script) those two apps seem to not be working and send a couple of error messages after booting saying "process com.google.android.youtube" and "process com.google.android.gm" have stopped unexpectedly and giving the option to force close or report... So you know if I can fix that?
EDIT: Google Maps and Think free office work fine...

You can do it following the next steps:
You need to set the permissions correctly and delete Gmail.odex and YouTube.odex files if exist in /system/app before paste this new apps
1. Mount /system (R/W) in order to paste the apps
2. Just put the apps in /system/app and set the permissions like this (holding over each file, you'll change permissions)
x-x--
x----
x----
3. Reboot!
It should work
I'm having the same problem (root and get superuser app without root permissions. )but I don't have much of an idea on what to do. I have just swiched over from an iPhone so android is all new.
So my phone info is
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 with:
Android version 2.3.6
Baseband version S5830XWKT3
Kernel version [email protected]#1

Can someone please run me through what I need to do to root it (I know how to get the superuser but I need to know if that prepared script (EXTREME) that removes Maps, Gmail, Thinkfree, SamsungApps and Youtube will do the same for me. Also how do you use the script (ie do you "install form sdcard") as you would the root.zip? I just want to remove carrier bloatware than I will unroot again. Or would superoneclick work for me? (nevermind superoneclick as I cant get it to install on computerputer keeps "encountered a problem and needs to close".
Thanks

Thanks!

Why not if you have SuperUser installed? Search Titanium Backup and install it from Play Store. Remove any unnecessary system app using it. Root has nothing to do with removing the system app automatically or through Application Manager. So you will need the third party app like Titanium Backup.
P/S: Becareful with uninstalling/removing system app. Else you will render your phone unusable at all. (To unbrick it you will need more trick, search the thread in XDA to revive your phone)

Look for in he first page of this thread!
I attached 2 scripts to remove some apps to get free space. Then you could flash root.zip successfully
Here you have ROOT + CWM 5.0.2.6. Fixed files too

Follow the steps:
1. Here you could find the scripts to remove the apps and get free space (it's compulsory for the last roms to push superuser files)
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420830
2. You have enough free space now (your apps have been deleted, check it)
Flash ROOT + CWM 5.0.2.6. FIXED files to get root and a custom recovery

You can flash CWM first if you want

[APK Request] Car mode

Hello, I am running an ATT S5 and although there is the bloat were drive mode app I am looking for the stock car mode app and was hoping someone could upload the required APK for me as I cannot find it anywhere. Many thanks.
Edit: The S voice APK would also be most helpful.

I had previously found the S voice APK on Google, they never worked, always CTD on start, just had the idea to make it a system app and it worked so happy, happy. 2nd I am not looking for the AT&T app I want the Samsung car mode app, which is not on the playstore and I assume is hidden on the Galaxy store like the S voice app.

Install a launcher, Nova or Apex both work. Add a shortcut (system shortcut not apps) choose a setting short cut and look for Drive Mode. It also gives you the option to use Download Booster. Which AT&T has removed.
The drive mode is present in your phone, its only hidden cuz they want you to use their AT&T drive mode. Samsung one still exists! Hope this helps.
Are you running an S5, I am using a custom rom for my 900A, it lacks this function though even the nandroid backup lacks the required apk

Okay, here are the files from the /system/ directory of my own S5. Mine is the Sprint variant, however I'm confident that they're the same...
You CAN NOT flash this .zip in recovery, you must extract the contents and copy to the appropriate directories in the system partition.
Remember after you put them there, you must change the permissions for the folders and the files:
__________/rwxr-xr-x/ rw--r--r
/system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk
________________________________
__________/___rwxr-xr-x___/ rw--r--r
/system/app/DriveLinkRemote/DriveLinkRemote.apk
___________________________________________
______/______/----------rwxr-xr-x----------/-----rw--r--r
system/priv-app/S-Voice_Android_phone/S-Voice_Android_phone.apk

Hope this helps someone... =3

No, you dont do that....
you do exactly what i explained....
download the .zip,
extract the contents to SD Card, (or ANY Download folder),
Once extracted, you will have simple directory, starting with "system/",
[ Now, you simply go thru the folders, and copy them from where you extracted them and paste into same folders in your phonephone's "system/" partition....]
Basically;
if you copy it from /system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk on your SD Card,
Then you paste it to /system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk on your phone...
Change permissions as i indicated earlier, as you copy each one,
When all are done, reboot. ..
[While booting back up a message will say something like
"Optimizing Application 1 of 3..."
thats a good sign that you did it right. ...]

Hi, thanks for the explanation, but I'm really new at this, and I need this application.
I do not understand, "Change permissions as I indicated earlier, as each copy"
that you mean this?, the only thing I see is that button "r-w and r-o" or you mean super user permissions?
------------read---------write---------execute
---owner--x-------------- x--------------
----group--x--------------x-------------
----Other--x------------- x------------
----set uid-----------set gid-------r sticky
hello ... when given permission to DriveLink, and drivelinkremote,
at 2 give them permission, but I did this to see if this well in owner, group, others, check all run.
restart, and indeed was installed when lit, but when I want to open, do not find in menu, and the car mode toggle of the active,
I get that you can not open out "car stopped mode"
Do you mean that the app is force-closing when it tries to open after toggling the 'car mode' quicksetting?

okay, hopefully this will answer any questions you have had or would have had...
I know its a little messy, but bear with me, I've never done a Screen Recording before...
Just read the instructions i posted above, watch the videos, and if you still dont get it, read and watch again...
remember to put things in the same folder paths you pull the from (the main difference between the two videos), etc...
Once all are done, reboot....
