Hello to everyone, I've recently started searching to buy a new phone and I saw Galaxy S and Galaxy S Plus. I saw that GS+ is 40% faster than the original one but I also heard that the GS consumes less RAM and that the GS+ lags a lot more.
Also, I saw that 9000 has a wider community and support and that it even has more payable games from gameloft than the 9001!
And so, I'm a bit confused, that's why I'm asking for advice. Thanks a lot in advance!
hi,
it really depends on whether we get ics ported for sgs+ or not.
if you just compare the hardware of both sgs+ will easily win, but the community is much bigger for sgs (we neither have any finished cm7 port nor ics, but both are maybe coming).
Thanks for your answer! I also happened to see people say that GS+ lags more than the original GS (both on GB) and people saying that it looks like samsung doesn't give much support to it, unlike the GS. That's what has been making me wonder.
If you are not planning to upgrade from stock rom(wich I dont advise) you should go with the SGS+.
Like annqx said there is a much better communitx for SGS, there are a lot more roms for it.
Sorry for my late reply, I had internet issues the whole week, anyway, I see, maybe then I'm going for the SGS+, since it's newer, I believe it will get more popular in the future. Thanks a lot for your answers!
Not sure it will get that much more popular. Remember galaxy s was top end phone at one point. Now replaced by s2, and soon s3. Just my opinion but could be wrong.

Well having used both phones and still using S version i would personaly say S as you already know about modding obviously being part of this community .
S+ is better on paper and thats what it only is , unless some drastic change in modding com and suddenly many devs appear for S+...
S with CM7/9 is just to good of phone ...
I'm satisfied with my S Plus. In my opinion it is a good fast phone
And not to forget, GPS is better in the S Plus, many people had problems on that with the SGS.
I9000 is better than I9001 because it have better dev support, better gpu and cpu .

plenty of custom roms and kernels, loads of development, great screen, so so gps, not sure about miui, its a bit buggy, but yes it has been ported to sgs, I love my sgs!

Just aggreed.
As far as I know, MIUI is very experimental for now, but CM7 works fine (note that it is not released yet and yes, there are bugs!).
You may also consider using custom ROM's based on stock, like:

I think miui is stable enough for me as daliy use

I see only 2 cons for the Galaxy S :
1/ If you have little hands ... the Galaxy S is quite big
2/ No flash for the camera
All the rest is perfect for me, and as mentioned above, many custom ROMs exist for this phone, especially MIUI
-no flash for the camare (its not ipmoprtant to me but most people like taking pictures)
-it has less user available ram (329 Mb) compared to its brothers like galaxy tab
+after gps fix, it never lost me or never led me to a wrong target..
+even with that little amount of ram (which i complain obssesively about at every chance recently) it is one of the fastest devices..
For me, 720p recording is still far from 30fps,and looks more like 25. A couple days ago I was trying Sony Arc with SGS 2 and still same problem.Sony was smoother in 720p recording than even Sgs2. But I cant find anything bout this here so i ques its just my imagination

This phone is approximately one year old now (so it isn't a new phone). It has a camera, but no flash. The GPS seems to be judged using GPS status or by how fast it locks, not by how well it actually performs. In regards to the quality of GPS there is so much debate over the quality of the GPS, that you should assume the GPS is broken (and honestly, many who claim it does work refuse to provide tracks). Recently, OTA updates seem to have been introduced, but I haven't actually heard of any being provided.
That being said, the plastic finish is UNDERRATED! I haven't heard of anyone's plastic backing break. And the Gorilla glass is a nice touch.
At this time, I wouldn't bother with the SGS though. For those who want a Android phone for productivity, the HTC's are probably a more "polished" experience (the Desire HD at least was). For gaming/multimedia, you'd want a dual core phone, or to just get a tablet. A lot of us are only happy with the SGS because we paid money for it..
....and then we hacked and tuned the heck out of them til they fly!

After first owning a htc hero then a desire HD I do find that the SGS is a very capable device and i won't be looking for a new one for some time if my sgs carries on performing the way it does now ill have no need plus its taken a good few knocks and bumps I even managed to drop it in a pint of beer down said pint save my phone and carry on the conversation I was having

Hey guys just after some feedback about the sgs plus. My htc leo has finally bitten the dust and i dont want to purchase a major upgrade untill the rumored sgs 3. So in the meantime im looking for a decent replacement. So just want to hearawhat your opinion on day to day use, battery life, and if you generally happy with the phone. I know the ram is a bit on the low side considering whats on offer with todays phones but the 1.4gh cpu is appealing. Ill be using custom roms as well. Thanks for the help =]
jon
I would not buy a SGSi9001, as the roms, themes, and everything you´ll find here will be useless for you (no flash=no fun). If you are waiting for SGS3 (as many of us) you can buy a SGSi9000 (even an used unit). They are really cheap nowadays.
I dont get howd theyd be usless to me. Explain?
Not too keen on a i9000 id rather get a nexus same innards, more love from google. Only reason i9001 is appealing is because of the extra beef in the cpu.

Explanation: SGSi9000 is a different phone than SGSi9001
So: ROMS, themes, and everything that has been made for SGSi9000 (a lot) will be USELESS for you if you buy a SGSi9001.
My first android Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700 died a last week as my son peed on it ...so I am looking out for a new phone....
I am having a tough time selecting between LG Optimus 2X and Samsung Galaxy R which both have a similar hardware with pros and cons for both...
After the price drop on Galaxy R, the price difference is not much so that is not a deciding factor.
I know that the stock ROM of LG sucks and my head says that I should stick to the stock ROM till the phone is within warranty, but I my heart says that I should install custom ROMs as I did play a lot on my old Spica with the custom ROMs available on Samdroid Forum and the community is pretty strong on XDA for LG O2X...
On the other hand the Galaxy R has a good usable ROM out of box that I can use till my phone is in warranty and then I can experiment with custom ROMs. The community is just evolving and is not as strong as O2X....
I am really confused...looking forward to an honest suggestion from the experts...
Thanks in advance and a very Happy New Year to all.
Cheers,
Parag
i am using LG O2X and i am very satisfied. (i think) if you'll use full feature of android phone, you must root your phone and use custom rom. both phones have the same CPU, but there is much difference between the screens. i prefer IPS.
i do not use Galaxy R but i definitely recommend o2x.
I'd take the O2X, too.
The update to ICS will come and the new roms are really good.
the galaxy R has double ram memory which is a huge advantage.. but with cyanogenmod 7.2 for now and cyanogenmod 9 in a few days/weeks, the optimus is really great and its power is widely extended ... battery life could be better tho.. have a happy new year with a powerful new phone

ICS won't be there in a few days or weeks
We need some binaries from nvidia and maybe even a leak from LG..
Thanks for the replies so far. I just saw this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997705 related to the reboot problem with O2X. Haven't gone through all the 150+ pages but it surely is concerning.
This just might convince me to go for Galaxy R.

That problem doesn't exist anymore. And if you'll flash CM7 you'll have a very smooth and responsive phone. Remember that o2x is supported by CM and MIUI teams.
If it costs the same i'll get Galaxy R
1. Samsung has better support than LG
2. You can add a cellphone strap to Galaxy R (i think, but you can't on O2X)
3. Louder speakers (O2X is softer than spica and i have a spica)
4. Screen looks better and it is larger (depends on person, i prefer larger screen than pixel density to some extend)
5. higher RAM and ROM capacities (Puts you on the safe side for future upgrades)
6. Hopefully more stable radio than O2X (O2X's radio is too irregular)
7. BT 3.0
8. Battery Life
Some advantages for O2X
1. Design (O2X looks nicer with the curved glass [personal preference])
2. Gorilla glass (thou i'm quite sure Galaxy R is quite tough as well)
3. Well established dev community
4. Search button (if you ever use it)
Since my brothers both use Galaxy S and i used to have a spica and now an O2X, if they costs the same i'll get Galaxy R.
I got O2X purely because it is the cheapest dual core phone in the market and the huge amounts of software issues made it even cheaper.
Anyone do post any arguments if i stated anything wrongly.
i have a OX2 for some days now and i flashed it right away at CM7.1.0 stable. and i got some shutdowns and freezes ad fc as well... Since i did that so earlish i cant surely tell if its rom/software problem or its a phone hardware issue... im still very noobie on mods and stuff like that... maybe i did something wrong..i will try soon to wipe all and re flash.. other than these problems is awesome phone..and the mod community huge!
If you aren't comfortable flashing roms I wouldn't recommend the O2X.
I love mine and would never trade it for the Galaxy but that's cause I love the unlimited tweaks, mods, and dev support.
But again if you are too worried to mod it stick with the Samsung they will have more support and corporate updates that wont void your warranty.
Good luck and they are both excellent phones.
Happy new years!
Making bad decision's one at a time.

Hey guys, would you reccomend buying a SGS 2 or waiting for the next version? Anyone know when the next version will be out? I am on AT&T thanks!
it simply depends on the fact if u can afford a better device when it comes out... if you can then go ahead and wait... if you cant then there is no point... and if you choose to wait then wait a little longer to see if the device has sufficient developer support, if you are into rooting n custom ROMS...
I think it's best to wait for the S3 i will definately wait for it and i think it's worth waiting
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Its better to wait for S3 it will be very good for sure
I thought to buy the galaxy s2 because my s1 don't became ics and was very slow with all roms that i tried. But with the slim ics ROM I'm now very happy and the performance is great. Now i will wait until the s1 will die or no more updates will come from the Android community.
That save a lot of money and I'm very happy with my old lag free phone.
Just my 2 cent.
And excuse me for my English, best regards from Germany.
send from SGS i9000 with Slim ICS 3.1
I completely agree with the last poster. With Gingerbread, I was looking to upgrade. After I put ICS on my phone—especially with bigmem kernels sporting 400mb of available RAM—I see absolutely no reason to upgrade. My phone doesn't lag and I can play any of the new games I want to. I would definitely wait for the S3.
It depends on what you wanna do with your phone.
You are on XDA, so i guess you wanna try new roms an tweak your phone to the fullest
In that case buy the SGS 2, there is already a lot of devs building roms for the SGS 2
If you want the newest phone..... and can wait for it's release (don't know exactly when)... and can afford it..... and can wait for root to come out, the SGS 3 is your choice.
I have a SGS 1 to play with so my choice would be simpel... wait for the SGS 3.
Sgs3 22nd may UK. I have seen it and it really looks as if its from beyond this galaxy!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I'd totally wait and even after S3 being released would wait some more.
I never buy something new after being fairly well tested and reviewed.
And even so, i'll probably hang to my SGS. I'm not even joking my phone's fast as hell even with a GB based rom, have probably the best sound you can have on any phone around, the perfect screen size for me with a beautiful screen with beautiful colors to look at, frontal button with no useless touch buttons (really who needs a dedicated search button anyway), built in a perfectly solid enough case with battery to spare for a whole day (i ask for no more).
i've been using mintberry miui for a good while now, have it well customized (plenty of wireless passwords saved, loads of apps with several data, everything works flawlessly without a single FC for months) and i can't really imagine all of this going even faster, it's fast enough as it is. I don't even consider changing to an ICS rom just yet.
The only things i would change is the **** gps that never really worked regardless what i try and wireless going into sleep mode regardless of me configuring it not to (although this is a rom/kernel problem). But i can live with both, my car already has gps, i already had a dedicated device before getting this phone as well and i can always have my phone not entering sleep at all in the first place, so... meh This is nitpicking anyway.
Really, i've put to thought changing my phone many times, but after considering what i'll get i always end up realizing my phone delivers everything i need with power to spare.
If you own an SGS you probably already have the best there is
I'm waiting for the Galaxy S4
i got both sgs1 an sgs2 so comparing sgs1 is sexy on gb but sgs2 is sexy on gb too..but performance of sgs2 is better an iam planning for new device tht will b latest may b sgs3 so better wait cause teck speeking quadcore, cam, speed war will start soon an every company will rush out new phones,so ull hav a chance to select,an may b the price falls too (who knos)........cheeeerz

Wait.
Definitely.
Ultimately.
Short time.
10 years only.
And buy Samsung Galaxy 95.
Any earlier model would be a crap.
I thought I read somewhere that it will not be out until Q3/Q4 this year...but if you ask me, I would certainly not wait...considering the current SGS (almost 2 years old?) is still able to run ICS decently, I really see no reason the upgrade the hardware, or in this case, to wait for newer hardware...
If you ask me I would definitely wait for S2 till it's price would fall or just wait some more time to buy S3 . i wouldn't go for S1 generation anymore
OK, its time to upgrade my trusty DHD.....
...but what gets my hard-earned (no, really) pennies?
To me there are 4 options........
1) HTC One X
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
3) Wait until the 30th and get the Samsung Galaxy SIII
4) Keep the DHD for another 12 months and benefit from a cheaper contract.
So, if it was your pennies getting spent, where would they be going?
I'm looking for views from existing SGN users here. Do you love the Note? Hate it? What do you like most about it, and what drives you potty?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

I love my note. It's definitely my favorite phone out of the 8 smartphones I've owned (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, HTC Sensation, Samsung Vibrant, LG G2X). The downside? It is the most disappointing phone development wise. There doesn't seem to be any good ROM out there. Stock is painfully slow. There is no CM7 which is really disappointing. Any of the ICS I've seen out has had major problems which is why I haven't upgraded yet. There are horror stories about people bring their phones when upgrading to ICS and so far it doesn't seem to be a small number of people which is really sad. Samsung is JUST rolling out ICS now but I've heard stock ICS is also very slow and if you have CWM on or from what I understand have rooted your phone at all, you run a huge risk of bricking if you try put ICS on.
TL DR; If you don't mind staying stock for a WHILE, get the Note because it's awesome having a huge screen, resolution, and the SPen.

To the OP: If I were you, I would get the One X or the S3, depending on the needs. Like I need the sd card and removable battery so it would rather be the S3 for me. Assuming you haven't used the note for long, both these phones must feel great to you. For almost all of us here, they are just too darn small. Once you use a note, you just get addicted to it.

Thanks guys. Keep them coming.
I played with the Note and the HOX today and liked them both, but the huge Note battery is drawing me towards it.
I'm 6'1" and have hands like pan-shovels so the size of the Note isnt a -ve to me.
love mine too!
Yeah loving the bigger screen. I'd never go back to something smaller.
On a different note.. (haha) had mine a month and have rooted and switched the rom and Kernel.. wasn't very hard just had to get over the mind set of bricking it.
Buy one!
Note, large screen, s-pen apps (if you're inclined to use them), some good roms, ICS development with the new builds should be on their way soon
the rest? S3, rather than 1x. or at least wait till reviews come out comparing the 2.
wait
wait for Galaxy S3 - I allready have it and It's awsome!!!

The Note is fabulous - better than the GNex I came from. Why? The screen principally - the Galaxy nexus screen just seemed so small compared!
I think the answer is this:
1. If you want the latest tech - go for the One X or the S3.
2. However, as it's so early in their life cycle you don't know what problems they will have (other than we already know the OneX has cr*p battery life) and we all know that no phone is perfect. Each phone I've had (and I've had a few) has had it's own unique issue.
3. If screen size is important, forget the other two and go for the Note. There is just simply no question of that (until Note II is announced in future!)
Maybe quad core will be a bit faster than dual core but I doubt it will make much of a difference in everyday use. In any event, I hate TW / Sense etc so always remove that bloatware and, hey presto, android flies on the Note (not that it was sluggish with TW).
And the lack of reliable ICS at the moment? In the words of Catherine Tate (look her up if you're not British!) - am I bovvered? There's such a clamour for it and, yes, it's a bit prettier and more logical in places but GB is absolutely fine for 99.98%.
Just my £0.02. Good luck with the decision.
Edit: Just seen that you're a brit - no need to look up Catherine Tate! More importantly, just realised you've got a DHD. Move on, you won't be disappointed. Sure, tech will move on over the next few monts, years etc but it always does.

Thanks for that. I agree with your assessment, especially ICS which is definitely leaving me underwhelmed in terms of how "un-different" (new word!) it is to GB, especially after having used Honeycomb on my tablet for the past 6 months.
I've decided (with a feeling of I'm cheating on a loved one) to get a Note online, then I can return it under distance selling laws if I find it unbearable to live with. I suspect it wont be going back.
Genuinely, many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Your insight has been much appreciated.

I love the large screen and battery of the Note.
The S3 is more future proof, but only because of the processors. RAM is the same.
One thing in the s3's favor is the LED notification light! w00t! I have been missing this on EVERY device that wasn't a blackberry!
The s3 also has a large battery, but .. the Note takes the cake.
The One X is out of the picture. Why? Removable battery. Also, they pushed the device so fast to get it out on the market as one of the first quadcore devices that ... well, to me it doesn't seem that attractive. The s3 on the other hand looks mighty fine!
The Note is awesome for its screen and battery size (as well as the S-Pen).
It's really your call... Sometimes I wish my note were a tiny bit smaller, but I don't regret it when I'm actually using it! hehe.
I upgraded from DHD to galaxy note and can say it was the upgrade. Absolutely amazing display over DHD, much better battery life, faster, smoother, much better camera, etc. When I look back now to already my wife's DHD, it seems to be a nice small phone ... Was able to replace most of work on my laptop with note thanks to Swype ...
I have both on stock ROM, didn't find need to go for ICS on my note. Everything is working flawlessly, maybe will change my mind half year later when there will be more positive reaction from community ... my few cents .

One thing that's driving me mad is the sluggishness of the stock Gingerbread ROM. Is the official ICS ROM still sluggish?
If so, would rooting the phone and deleting some of the bloat help? Also, is it possible to remove Touchwiz from the official ROM? I'm a bit scared to try any other ROMs in case I brick my phone.
I've had my note since november and I love it!! The huge screen is so much fun and great to surf the web!!! It doesn't feel bigger in my pocket than my previous phone (iPhone). Even though it has a huge screen the battery life is really good (especially with my actual rom Criskelo)
I haven't tried the other phones you posted but I am still trying to understand why anyone would need a quadcore in his phone today!! I installed spy cpu on my SGN and my CPU almost never rises to 1400MHz so what could anyone do with the extra power maybe 3D games since I don't play any so can't tell about the performances but I doubt it since the note still has one of the best processors out there! The games I play are: solitaire, temple run, fruit ninja,...

I don't really notice the sluggishness, everything seems smooth!! The rom I am using is lighter than the stock rom so there may be a difference! If you wan't to remove Touchwiz you'd better install a new rom on your phone would be easier than to modify the stock rom! In either case you need to root your phone! At first didn't want to do it but in the end I am happy and giving some good feedback about the rom I am using! And the bricking is pretty rare!!
To install a new rom if you literally follow instructions you can't run into problems!! A bit of research and in the end it just takes 10/15min to change rom!

That's an easy one. Root and install one of the stock rooted GB Roms. No need to 'remove' TW. Just install another launcher (let's not start the 'which launcher is best' argument here) and then set that as default. TW will fade into the background and won't be used and your Note will be faster.

Only 2100mah I think? Not that big - nearly 20% smaller than the Note.
