The easiest to start with CF-Root. CF-Root roots your phone & installs all the necessary stuff for flashing. You will need Odin & possibly a stock rom for your phone. These can be downloaded from http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Remember always do factory wipe & clear cache before & after flashing. Also make sure to do a back up of your stock rom before flashing anything. Also make a back up of EFS Folder in case your IMEI number is corrupted.
I recommend connecting your phone to your pc after installing CF-Root & copying everything that is on the internal sd card onto your pc.
Instructions in first post. It is long and can be confusing but if you read it carefully it is all quite easy.
Next go here (Team ICSSGS) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1398223
Instructions are in first post of thread. (Below instruction copied from first post of link)
Flashing Instructions
If you are flashing from another rom.
1. Flash ROM(new script should handle coming from any ROM, you also need gingerbread bootloaders)
If you are upgrading from an earlier build.
1. Flash the newest build in CWM.
If you have rebooted and your phone will not go past the kernel screen.
1. Boot into CWM and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
2. Reflash the appropriate kernel.
3. Reboot.
If the flashing procedure didn't quite go to plan, please follow this guide
After this install this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468795
Again all instructions on first post of thread.
http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2012/01/i9000xxjvu-android-236-upgrade-for.html
try that its were i started and ive flashed loads of roms now
Instruction for Flashing new ROM
There are basically 2 methods for flashing a ROM
1. CWM recovery menu mode
2. Download mode.
1. For CWM recovery mode you phone must be rooted with CWM, just put the ROM zip file in sdcard of your phone of your choice. then power off the phone. Then you may want to boot in reovery mode for this use pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume UP + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to recovery mode there just wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache from option then find and select install from sdcard -> chose file zip from sdcard and press power key to selct and start flashing. wait max 5 min and your phone will be booted with new rom of your choice.
2. Boot in to download mode by pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume down + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to download mode now connect your phone with PC and open odin in PC then select ROM file as PDA, PHONE & CSC under propoer boxes then click start - wait max 5 min and you phone will be booted in to new rom.
Thanks

It's JVU I have XWJW1 does that matter ? or will my phone become JVU after ?
Hello There,
Well I read a lot around, of those about Bricking ther Notes, after trying an update to ICS or after trying to switch from an ICS rom to another.
THe thing is that using the Stock ICS Kernel and wiping or Restoring Backups from the ClockwordMod Recovery Don't work, there's may be a Fix Right now By our Beloved Developpers, since Samsung put the source of it's Kernel to the Puplic, trying to find a solution to the Issue in question Thanks to Dev Entropy, who discovered that).
Now To Be really safe making Transitions from here to there and the other way, Here is what to Do :
First of All, ...... Don't You Panic !!!
If you are on a Pure Stock ICS Rom , then go to Step 1, If not, Flash a Pure ICS Stock Rom First,
Get it from The Sammobile.com
Here is the Link for the ZSLPF for you :
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/156659285/3ff1360/N7000ZSLPF_N7000OZSLPF_BRI.zip.html?lang=en
Flash it Using Pc ODIN.
OK Suppose We are on the LPF now :
1- Download the corresponding Rooted Kernel by Chainfire : I got it for you : http://download.chainfire.eu/176/CF-...-v5.6-CWM5.zip
2- Extract it, you will have a tar file, Flash it with PC odin.
3- Reboot, now you are rooted and you have cwm recovery at the same time
4- Download the AbyssKernel V4.2 only : http://www.mediafire.com/?c65mndvpk6ocbaa
5- Put the zip file on your sdcard, don't extract it
6- Choose what ever ICS rom you like, let's say the TMT v1.4 that you wanted.
7- Put the zip file on your Sdcard.don't extract it
8- now shut off your phone, Press the Vol Up, Power and the Home Buttons at the same time, and you will be into cwm recovery mode.
9- Don't wipe anything, and Flash the AbyssKernel v4.2.
10- Don't reboot the phone, still in cwmr, go to advanced and choose reboot recovery.
11- You are now in recovery mode again, but with the Abyss Kernel instead of the rooted LPF one by chainfire.(now you have cwm touch recovery, tap with your finger now)
12- So It is totally safe now : wipe everything : data, cache, go to advanced and wipe dalvick cache, and battery stat, choose also Fix permissions while you are there.
13- choose back to go to the first screen,
Now you have Options, depending on what you have dowloaded as a Rom file...
14- If you want to flash a backup zip file (let's say TMTv1.4.2) : choose backup and restore, and choose restore from internal sdcard, and look for your downloaded TMT zip file. (It should be clockworkmod/backup/TMT1.4...... Folder), I suppose you already have done it.!
15- If you have dowloaded a flashable zip file, then choose install zip file, and choose file from internal sdcard..
In either cases : Reboot and you are done.
This is the cleanest installation you could have done, just don't skip any step !!!!
If this Helped, The thanks Button is next to you...
....and check my MOD : the 15 toggles in case .....

one question, i guess that if i don,t want any other rom(would like to keep stock) i should avoid steps 6 & 7, right? And the last one as i'm pretty new to all this, flashcounter will remain at 0 with no triangle? USB debug "on" also too i guess?
Cheers!
No Sir,
For that you should stay on Step 3, and Hope "Dev Chainfire" did fix the Rooted Kernel him too..., I gave you the link to his cwmr Kernel 5.6, witch is, according to him, is Fixed. So you are Fully Rooted Yes!, But Safe ?? Only Time will Tell !!!. So If you would like to wipe any Data or Restore any Backup from CWMR, Be Carefull, only AbyssKernel 4.2 is Safe untill now (but it's for gingerbread only unfortunately..)
I guess It will Increase your counter by one, But for sure, it will give you the Yellow Triangle, since the rooted kernel is insecured !!!
Ouch!!! I guess i'll wait then...thanks for te headups!
Cheers
I was on the latest Rogers GB firmware before I decided to flash Slim ICS on my phone.
I followed all the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 (skipping the non GB parts, flashing the speedmod kernel using ODIN 1.85, then installing the zip from recovery)
However, the phone softbricked. Fortunately I was able to get it back into download mode by holding down the volume buttons while inserting the batter. Anyways, I decided to flash to another kernel to see if I could get it working again.
Next, I tried to flash Corn_Kernel_UCKK4_v705 and try it again but I was unable to find the zip file in recovery mode. Rebooting doesn't seem to do the trick because it just keeps getting in a boot loop.
I got it into download mode again and flashed KK1_Stock_Kernel but it's still giving me a boot loop whenever I try to boot.
Anyone know how I can fix this?
Alright, well from what I can tell, your kernel isn't compatible with the rom. An ICS rom like Slim ICS requires a kernel that is also ICS-based, but KK4-based kernels are gingerbread. Try flashing Semaphore's latest kernel through ODIN as a .tar file and reflash the rom through that kernel's ICS recovery mode.

Try this..
1. Return back to stock, using the method from the same post you mentioned. (it shows you how towards the bottom)
Note:
a. you can also get the phone into download mode by just holding onto the volume buttons "both" together!! and then plugging in the usb
connector from ur PC/laptop.
b. once in download mode, please see that Odin detects your phone, it will have a yellow highlight with COM (something like that written on it)
c. if not you need to have the right drivers!
2. Download the Slim ICS package again and move it to your phone's internal SD card
3. Dowload gapps and move it to your phone's internal SD card.
4. Download the devil kernel --> here
5. Follow the steps mentioned in the post you followed, after flashing the speedmod kernel which has CWM, go into CWM and flash the ICS ROM.
6. If the phone reboots or gets stuck, remove battery and restart phone!
7. Give it some time to boot. Once it does, reboot into recovery and flash Gapps, reboot(not required but still.. ) flash the kernel you downloaded.
8. Should work fine!
Hope this helps Enjoy.

Sorry for the necro but I just tried this and I was unable to flash anything with CWM after flashing Slim ICS.
I wasn't able to install any zips from my internal or external hard drive for some reason.
I let it reboot afterwards and the same boot loop happened. I tried reflashing it to stock (which was how I fixed it last time) but now it's stuck at the I896 logo screen and it wouldn't boot further.
I can still get it into dl and recovery mode but reflashing doesn't solve this.
Nevermind, I got it to work again using US i897 stock 2.3.3 for some reason :/

Hello all! I am a little stuck and could use some help if someone would be so kind. I need to send in my German Galaxy Note in for service/repair and need to return it to stock condition and have only found partial guides that don't seem to address each of my concerns. I have been reading up for a few days and I have yet to find an all-encompassing answer explaining how I would go about everything from properly unrooting to where I can obtain the correct files to flash everything back to its stock condition.
What I know thus far:
I understand that the counter needs to be at 0 or the warranty will be void. Luckily, when I rooted the phone I read up beforehand and made sure to use a method that supposedly did not increment the counter at all. I never installed any ROMS either (only an official update via Kies).
Question 1: How do I check to make sure the counter has really not been incremented? (Note: I get a yellow triangle on the bottom of the screen if I hold down volume and power when booting up, and the message warning me about downloading and installing a custom rom) Is that yellow triangle just a warning or does it actually represent there having been a record of installing a ROM?
Question 2: The phone is rooted but has never had a custom ROM installed on it. How do I Unroot so that there is no trace of the phone ever having been rooted? In what order should I Unroot and flash files?
Question 3: I had ClockworkMod recovery on the phone but either after doing a "Factory Data Reset" (from within the "Backup and restore" settings menu in Android) or doing an OTA update to 4.04, it has disappeared. How do I make sure it is really gone and the phone has the stock recovery installed on it.
Question 4: Where do I get the necessary files that I need to flash? I don't know which ones are guaranteed to apply to my phone specifically. I have a German version of the phone and assume there might be some slightly different releases based on country even amongst different N7000's. I would assume that a UK or Indian kernel or something would raise a flag at Samsung.
Question 5: Since I was able to retain Root even after OTA updates, do I need to Unroot any differently?
Basically, I just need to know how to return the phone to stock condition from the state it is currently in. (the guides I am finding don't seem to apply directly to my scenario) Any help with this would be tremendously appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. And yes, I did my own searches already
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download the rom for your area and flash it via pcodin. It will automatically unroot your device also...
To check the binary counter you have to switch off your phone and press vol down+home key+power button and Keep it holding until your phone gets into download mode. Press vol up on displayed warning to continue.
There you c the counter..
You can use traingle away to reset it to 0. Just use search feature...
Swyped From My Juicy Flavoured AOKP JB.
Hi eowken =) if you find a stock rom and odin flash it, then cwm recovery will disappear, binary count will be set to zeto and triangle will disappear, you will be unrooted too. Know this doesn't answer all your questions, but maybe something you can start to check out
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
best would be to go back into download mode, confirm with volume button and then you see binary counter. I think you can reset it if needed with triangle away.
clean condition would be on safe kernel, wipe everything, including dalvik cache and format all except efs in mounts (take out external card first)
Then flash your choice rom (same csc, you say German) throught pc odin
Before you do this at own risk. Why the need for service?

Question 1 : go to download mode ( vol down + power + home )
vol up to continue
next screen gives u the info
< custom binary download: NO > This is wat u wanna see
< firmware : samsung official >
Question 2 : Install a stock rom of ur location rom dr ketans post using pc odin.
Question 3 : Install a stock rom of ur location rom dr ketans post using pc odin.
This will install stock kernel and most of the times the cwm is removed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Question 4 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
any stock rom from any location for "N7000" will not raise counter
Question 5 : Install stock rom should unroot.
Thanks guys for all the replies. I have been reading up on everything from using PC Odin to avoiding the brick bug and flash counters thanks to the many links. I do have another question though which I would love to hear an answer to if anybody knows for sure.
So, since I want to definitely wipe everything (including dalvik, cache, etc.) to not leave a trace, then I assume I need to get into recovery. When I press power+volume down, though, it just goes to the yellow triangle warning. Does that mean that CWM is no longer on the phone, or is it merely inaccessible at this point?
In other words, are the following steps the order in which I should do everything?
1. Install CWM zip file (anyone have a suggestion for what version?)
2. Enter CWM recovery and do every available wipe and format (except for efs and not factory data reset since this will cause brick bug)
3. Install Samsung Stock Rom from provided link
4. Check if SuperUser is missing from app drawer (meaning phone is no longer rooted)
4. Try to boot phone into recovery (which should not work and give me yellow triangle warning instead) and then check to make sure counter is set to 0 in Odin
5. Send phone to Samsung for service
Many thanks again guys!
P.S. Reason the phone needs to be serviced is that it has a problem with the front button not working well anymore

To enter recovery its Vol UP/Home/power. Vol down is for download mode.
Best way to wipe internal sd is to mount as usb on pc, then manually select files and delete.

From bad to worse
I installed the correct stock ROM from that I got from the linked page via PC Odin. Everything seemed to flash perfectly. Then, after booting, the phone would constantly hang at the unlock screen.
I tried to flash it again with a newer stock version and same thing happened:
N7000XXLRG---4.0.4/12.07.04-N7000DBTLRG---Download--- Open Germany
I tried rebooting several times but apparently Touchwiz was not working at all with constant force closes and I could not even get past the unlock screen.
I searched through the forums where I found out that the phone needed a kernel that matched the ROM version I installed, so I flashed a kernel via PC Odin that I got from this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRG-DBT-2.5.tar.md5
The phone is stuck in a boot loop which makes sense seeing as though CWM isnt even installed. What kernel should I install and where can I get it?
Now I get a yellow triangle, by the way, why is that???
After flashing phillz kernel did you reboot into recovery and wipe cache and data, if not you'll get boot loops.
Did you flash kernel with pc odin rather than recovery? If so, as it's a custom kernel it will raise flash counter which is why you have yellow triangle. Once you've got rom to boot you can run triangle away app by chainfire to remove.

if it has so many fcs then first install a gb rom. then reboot into recovery and wipe cache dalvik and data factory reset. it should boot up the phone as normal

Unroot GT-N7000
Hi there,
Triangle away will be necessary first. There is a SU App on Google Play with the option "unroot". Let it unroot your device and let it uninstall itself. Then, boot into recovery mode holding down "volume up", Home button and Power button, wipe cache and reset your device by your original cwm.
If this is no help, you should tell me your current cwm version. With PhilZ Touch 4 Recovery, cwm 6.0.3.0 you would not need to flash the original cwm, because it restores stock cwm paths. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
So long, Catchit
Hello!
I'm new to Android, still learning how to use it. I'ved got an GT-I9000 with 2.3.6, it works fine excepting the battery. For example, the another night I tried to drain it by turning it on even due it was 0%. Left it to charge the hole night. And about 4 hours ago unpluged it, played 40 min. and the battey was at 40%. I don't think that's normal.
I thought I'd give a try at the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 I saw it is the latest. But the I saw the many roms Cyanogen, Slimbean, Mackay, etc. Which one do I need?
And a good tutorial is welcomed 'cuz I don't know ####.
Thanks!
Maybe it is problem with your battery, bad charging, weared etc. In my opinion 4.2.2 versions gives better battery live. No one will say which custom ROM is best - you have to try it itself. As a new user you can use latest CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (Android 4.2.2)
If you want try custom ROMs on your phone you have to install custom recovery (CWM).
1) Check your baseband version of the phone (for instance XWJV) and find appropriate kernel:
Code:
www.semaphore.gr/downloads/i9000
. Check 'USB Debugging' in Applications -> Development.
2) Install it via Odin as PDA file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 (Download Mode = Volume Down+Home+Power)
2*) If there isn't your version you can try installing 3-file JVZ ROM with Re-Partition and PIT file - then use Semaphore JVZ kernel (but be careful with it, i made it with this version and someone other may give you safer way). Download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 or
Code:
hotfile. com/dl/136940891/b232b26/I9000XWJVZ_I9000OXAJVT_OXA.rar.html
3) After you got your custom recovery and root you should make EFS backup (IMEI) and copy it into PC - you can use SGS Toolbox for Google Play.
4) Download and copy ROM files and GAPPS into your internal SD - (cm-10.1.3-RC1-galaxysmtd.zip) download from http://get.cm/?device=galaxysmtd. You can install CM9 first, because going directly to 10.x may lead to loosing your IMEI (i didn't lost it ). You can find Gapps for JB4.2 here: http://goo.im/gapps
5) Turn off phone, go to recovery (Volume Up+Home+Power). Up/Down = Volume button, Accept = Home. Use full wipe (Wipe Data/Factory reset, Wipe /cache, Advanced -> Wipe /dalvik cache). Now 'install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard' and seek for CM .zip file. After installation do same with GAPPS.
6) Reboot system now - all done. First boot takes a while.
Thanks for nothinh. I don't have a clue. Why doesn't exist a easy tutorial for installing from a stock 2.3.6 to 4.2.2?

It's preety straightforward - you download kernel with built-in cwm that suits your current software (rom), you flash it via Odin, download ROM that you like the most, put it on SD and install from CWM recovery mode - doing all of those things while following instructions posted in their respective topics made by creators of those roms/kernels/guides - most of them are in "Galaxy S I9000 Android Development" section, you just have to look and do some reading.
I don;t get it because he says "after geting that, after installing that" and I don;t know If I already have it or no.
Now I'm in trouble and I need HELP!!
While tring to root the phone I opened zadiag.exe, hit install and it never got out of Download Mode. I'ved pulled out the battery and tried to start the phone... nothing hapened. After that I tried to flash with PITT 512 on Odin, at first it sayed Failed so I unninstalled the Composite USB Samsung device mobile and reinstalled the Samsung Drivers. Tried again to reflash with Odin and sayed Succesful! But it still doens't start. I can't enter in recovery mode, only download mode.
What do to?

I'd just opened zadiag.exe and hit install Samsung COmposite.... in Download Mode, after that it stayed there.
Now I'ved flashed Semaphore_kernel_JVU_2.5.0beta.tar and it's stuck in Recovery mode, tried Wipe data and after that cache, but I still have errors
Can;t mount /cache/recovery/last_log
Can't open same thing
Unknown volume for path recovery.command
And at the Wiping cache the same thing.
L.E. I'ved fixed it with this tutorial: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/ - that's what I call a well explained tutorial.
Thanks for the help. I'm going to try again to root it with the tutorial you gave me.
L.E.2. So it wasn;t my fault. After waiting 2.30 hours to download the rom I'ved began to flash it. Good. All things going nice. Going to step two: flashing CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS, hit start wait. At restart it enteret in Recover mode with the same errors "can't find ..."
So I'ved flashd it again to repair it. I guess my phone ain't made for rooting

Can't be true. Maybe someone other know good kernel file with root for JVU version. I used the JVZ with Semaphore kernel on 3 phones (mine and two from friends) and everything was fine - this is the best base for modding this phone in my opinion.
Then I'll dare to say that I ain't lucky in rooting.
Something's wrong. Why can't I flash custom roms?
