Hmm... How good are you in porting C++/java code to SL? FYI, original Android version of "Cut the Rope" has 1.5 MB compiled binary module plus 1.6 compiled java code. So it much easier to port it from iPhone/iPad (if you have good designed C++ classes) than to SL.

i meant for the developers of "cut the rope" it could not be so difficult to port it to WP.. they wrote the game.. they could port it to any p-language.
anyway, it was one of the games, which i had searched for when i got my omnia and i really do think a game like this should have been on marketplace already..

Trust me, it's not an easy... Even for developers. Actually it's not a "port" but they should write a brand new XNA game. Of course they may reuse assets, algorithms and classes structures but it's a lot of work.

thanks
WOW!
from what i saw that looked great!
i love first person shooters and will sooooo drain a battery if they get games like this on our android os!
Just donated five dollars, I'll post up a quick run down once I get my grubby paws on an apk
I won't risk donating for this one
The guy is the infamous Valdimir Silva - with the worst and sloppiest ports of games like Doom and Quake. I seriously doubt this one will be an exception, but we'll see. Please give us feedback if you get the app. I hope he actually sends you an apk and doesn't take donations for some vaporware or a doom WAD for Quake 2, which I remember exists. I bet his next "port" will be CS 1.6 - there's a doom WAD for De dust too

i want quake3 arena so i can play some instaunlagged on my phone
Force closing after one one run, however, during that one run, it's pretty smooth.
where do i get the pak0.pak? i'm having trouble downloaing in my area and it tells me to get the pak0.pak and move it over using cpu?
Unreal Tournament being ported to Linux is almost impossible because it uses the Unreal Game Engine, which is created by Epic Games and is NOT open source... I mean, you could get the code off some shady torrent site, but there's no possible legal way of porting Unreal Engine to anything other than Windows, Mac OS X, PSP, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube, Wii, etc...
The Quake engine's source code was released, so it is possible to run Quake now on a PSP, iPhone, ANDROID, etc.
P.S.
If there was an HTC Android phone with a full keyboard, a VERY FAST CPU, a high-res display, 512 MB RAM and some really good GPU, we'd be running Quake 3 and going to WLAN parties by now
Back to evaluating the game.
Pretty choppy on my phone. Not surprised, though.

what ROM are you on? and what phone? i'm on the HTC dream xROM 1.5r4 with about 40 apps (apps2sd of course) and my sdcard specs are in my sig. things runs smooth as hell with NO sound. WITH sound it runs a bit choppy.
G1 with the latest CM rom. I'll try it with no sound and see if that helps.
Thanks.
How do you enable sound
How do you huys enable sound. I saw there was a setting toggle while you are in game and use the menu of the application - toggle sound and toggle onscreen controls and I toggle the sound but nothing happens. Do you have to restart the game to get sound to work? A pretty damn good port btw - I regret saying bad things about the dev...

UT is probably not the best example for a difficult linux port. "Porting" Unreal Tournament to Linux consists of installing it with the Linux installer provided by Epic themselves.

Hi!
Just wondering if it would be possible to port those games...it would rock to have Undying on my phone!
As far as I can figure the only reason Quake was ported is because the engine is open sourced.
I don't think those other games (or many for that matter) are open sourced. So unless there are Linux versions that could be ported, I wouldn't hold your breathe.
I hate this answer but it makes a lot of sense lol
Oh well, here goes my dream
I'm not sure your dream was viable to begin with. Undying is possible, I suppose, but Prey is a much more demanding game than Q3 is.
How about counter strike?? Isn't that open sourced??

There are a couple of windows mobile warcraft and warcraft II ports floating around based on Stratagus engine.
http://stratagus.sourceforge.net/
It is free (might be open source'd not sure) but has been replaced by Bos Wars.
http://www.boswars.org/
If there is an Android port of the BOS Wars game you could replace it with Warcraft/Warcraft II assets.
This is the only MAME emulator I've found that supports the classic games. It emulates a GP2X game console which supports .34/.35b roms only. It doesn't seem to recognize the newer roms.
I can only find it by using the links on this page or scanning the QR Code with my phone.
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-jrioni-jarcade-qCqA.aspx
I had to use my phone and scan the QR Code with the Barcode Scanner App to open the page in the MarketPlace. If anyone could provide a link, it would be great as the GTab doesn't have the resolution to scan the QR Code as well as being a PITA with only one camera.
UPDATE: Tried to use my phone to blowup the QR Code to scan it as the link wasn't working for the GTab for some reason. Got it to scan with Barcode Scanner, but it linked to the same page in the Marketplace. It didn't make a difference though. It seems there is still something missing from the Marketplace implementation on the GTab and this is after the last Marketplace hack involving changing the build.prop. Sideloading after downloading from a device that can use this like appears to be the only way to go to load this for now.
TigerMAME, which is found easily on Android Marketplace only supports Neo Geo/CPS1/CPS2 games.
Once purchased and installed, you need to wait for him to send you a code to unlock and activate the emulator. It took more than 24 hours, so be patient.
I was able to convert some roms to work with this using his instructions on his blog:
http://jrioni-arcade.blogspot.com/2009/09/howto-rom.html
Playing with WiiMote Keyboard works. You will need to UNCheck the WM Sideways option in the keyboard settings for the WiiMoteIME Settings. The emulator assumes you're turning it sideways. The Wiimote is difficult to play MAME with, looks like it's time to buy a Classic Controller Pro!
I wish it played the full set supported by GP2X, but it only works with about one third of the roms GP2X supports. I went through them all, since have full set for my Dingoo and PSP and used the app with G1, Droid and Incredible (probably one of the first people that bought his app in 2009).
Jioroni messed up, since this app and the PC Engine would have doen well, were it not for his code validation process. His efforts to prevent piracy actually has hurt him more than selling through the market straight.
Yeah I was a little put off by the piracy precautions as well. It's scary when you have only 24 hours to return it and it takes almost 2 days to get a code. I did reprocess the roms as he had outlined in his blog post and a lot of them were able to play successfully. I have some issues maybe you might know how to solve like the galaga missing ship exploding sound or sounds in donkey Kong. I know in the PC version there was a sample directory to address this is there something like this?

All common issues with MAME .34 & .35. Still young app back then.
This project appears abandoned. No activity on the blog since 2009, and though Jarcade shows up in the market, if I try to buy it, I get a server error.
Are there any emulators that play the early Mame games from the eighties?
I was actually surprised that mame doesn't exist for android. I want to play old-school 80's games and I think most would be perfect for android devices.

Perhaps it's beause while the code is available, it cannot be used commerically, so no monetay gain for the wouldbe developer. I installed the Android sdk + all the other required software, just to get a feel for what would be involved in porting mame. The NDK might provide some help using the existing C code, rather than converting everything to java, but at this point I'm still learning how to import existing java code into my test projects.
The other problem as I see it, is that Mame runs with the command line or a frontend. I may be able to get some code for a java frontend, but adding it to the project and connecting it is beyond my current limited abilities.
There's also the source code MAMEUI, which has a GUI. Written for windows tho
Yes it wouldn't have a monetary gain, but that hasn't stopped people previously from porting mame to everything under the sun. The one device I thought would have it for sure, doesn't.
And yes a front-end would be an issue and add development time, and so would an a control overlay. Someone needs to standardize some game development tools one thing being virtual controls so other game developers who need on screen controls can just place say an 8 way controller and two buttons. But that's another matter.
Well, I hope mame gets ported one day but if it hasn't already I don't think it's just around the corner.

I've been going through the Android SDK tutorials / layouts section and believe that creating a frontend may be the easiest part. Haven't yet learned how to pass values to from the Java frontend to the native C code, but I'm sure it's very possible.
The initial release of this theoretical MAME port could be without a control overlay. The user could use the navigation keys on their Android device if available, or something external like a wiimote.
Another thought is that perhaps MAME could be compiled for Android and launched via the command line in the Terminal emulator.

excellent question! I wanna know cuz I want Sonic 4 for Android, and given how open source it, it wouldn't suprise me if someone knows how to port Apple Apps
Different operating systems. Apps and games need to be PORTED to android... You can't just install them.
It's difficult to explain without some computer/coding knowledge......
Think of it in terms of a game that comes out on PC, Xbox and PS3. The game is developed with console in mind and then ported to the other systems. Naturally the original is far better, it's what it was coded for and optimized for. The ports, unless rebuilt from the ground up, are never as good.
Just like you can't stick an Xbox360 disk in your computer and start playing, you can't install an apple application on Android. Porting is a pain-staking process, eventually a majority of apps on the Apple store will make it to Android, but don't hold your breathe.
It can be as open source as it wants, it's still a difficult and painful process to port it to another operating system. If it was easy every PC app and title would be Mac friendly and Apple/Linux users would have more than the small handful of games to play that they unfortunately have.
If you want sonic download a Genesis emulator and play one of the originals. Touch screen controller emulated controls suck though . Wish their was a better alternative.

If an app has been ported (think angry birds) it would be in the android market, amazon appstore or getjar.com (in the case of the newly released cut the rope.)

I am looking forward to when you release it!
There was some great master system games/Game gear (Phantasy star, one of my all time fav games) and there was even a version of Sonic for the master system (if you have the complete cart it's worth some good $$, they are pretty rare).
Personaly I would love to see a Genesis Emulator more but, NES is just getting complete now (vNES light runs awsome now my my 1st gen device) NES/Master system are on the same level 8 bit.
So Next gen should be SNES and Genesis. You also run into a problem, more buttons are not easy to do on a touch screen.
I do look forward to testing this version, as long as it's running at full speed with sound on a 1st gen device then I would be something I am am interested in.

Is a GBA emulator totally impossible in WP7?
GPSP, a GBA emulator for Symbian S60 v5 on my old Nokia 5530 worked pretty well...
With sound you'll loose one or two frames (depend of the game and your device) but it's always playable and much more immersive
I've making some test with a GBA emulator. it works but it is very slow. You must understand that "normal" Apps and Games on WP7 running on a virtual machine and not access directly the CPU. This is a bottle neck to develop apps who needs all the power of CPU.
Again, When will the update with the sound be out ? Can I expect it in a few days or a few weeks ?
Also, can you get your skydrive support to sync game saves too ?

I understand, but can't you also offload some of the work to the GPU? I'm just wondering, hope you can manage a working GBA emulator on WP7!
Also, if I could make a recommendation, controls would be much better if they were dynamically placed in relation to the position of the fingers.
A perfect example of what I'm talking about are the controls in the Xbox Live "Z0MBIES (on the ph0ne), the "Relative Controls" option in the settings. I can't play without that option, and Sonic's Jewels would be much better with that setting!
it seems the store rejected it . it the app opensource ? or can you tell if it's a 100% C# application ?
