Hey all,
I've got a problem related to my Micro USB port (at least I think it is).
[Long story]
I've got a very annoying issue right now. Today I flashed Team ICSSGS RC4.1. Later when I connected my Galaxy S to my PC with the usb cable, no recharging icon appeared and my pc did not react to the connection at all.
Thinking it was a bug in RC4.1 (as OneCosmic RC 2.3 had the mass storage issue) I searched the ICSSGS thread, but not a single issue about mass storage mode was posted. So I flashed Devil kernel, hoping to fix it, but it didn't. Reflashed RC4.1, but problem still persisted.
I went radical and recovered a nandroid backup in CWM of ICSSGS RC3.0 (the one is was running earlier today), but somehow the recovery failed and left me with a semi-bricked phone. (Actually the 2nd time in a row when recovery semi-bricked my phone.)
Only download mode works. Recovery and normal boot bootloop.
[/Long story]
In short:
When connecting to PC to flash with Odin:
-At first the PC did not even notice the phone being connected through USB. Nothing happens.
-After blowing in the contacts of the Micro USB port, PC recognizes connection, but gives "Unknown device" error upon connecting. Reinstalling Samsung drivers does not work at all. Tested on laptop and home PC.
-Somehow I always have to blow into the Micro USB port to create contact and to get the PC to recognize a connection. But that's about it. "Unknown device" every time.
-When I plug in wall charger, the big battery icon appears, but stays grey all the time and after half a minute the phone boots, starting the bootloop.
Could it be that my Micro USB port is broken?
Any solution for this?
Thanks in advance!
I feel so stupid for recovering that nandroid backup. Otherwise my phone would still be working...
you will need the nexus drivers for your comp found here : w w w.multiupload.co.uk/BUCFT8M42 as your samsung drivers are no use now.
Thanks for your advice: Going to test it right away.
Unfortunately your link does not work for me.
I had the same problem but replacing the cable solved it.
Sorry for the duff link http://www.multiupload.co.uk/BUCFT8M42N

Tested this morning with someone else's cable, still the same issue.
Tried the Nexus driver, but still nothing. Also having troubles again to let the usb connection register. It connected after cleaning it, but now it does not seem to connect at all.
Could it be that the phone is completely busted and therefor breaks usb connection?
Haven't heard such a story yet, but is it possible?
I've got it sorted out.
Since it might be helpful for others that are searching for a solution:
1. I cleaned out my Micro-USB port using micro interdental brushes and a few drops of isopropyl alcohol. It also doesn't hurt to clean the contacts of your USB cable, just to be sure.
2. Connected the phone to my PC. This time my pc recognized it as a serial gadget.
3. Disconnected the phone and installed Nexus S driver (because of ICS rom on my Galaxy S)
Next connection my device was automatically recognized as an android phone.
Odin saw my phone as well and I could flash again!
My phone is back on Team ICSSGS RC4.2.
Thanks everyone for helping!
Same Issue cant fix
Hey guys im glad to see others are having the same issue but i cant seem to fix mine.
Assume im an idiot and ive missed something out but ill explain my situation....
Galaxy i9000 - windows 7 32bit - put ics on it a few weeks back following a guide on youtube (had never used odin or anything like that before) got it working but now have no usb comm options in the ics settings. now when i plug the usb (when it does detect at all) it says driver havent worked - device manager shows unknown device - i try update the driver and it says the best driver is already installed.
Im completely stuck and want to revert back to gingerbread so i can use my usb functions again. If i can get odin to see my phone again ill be relieved.
Any ideas?
Cheers guys! Seán.

But most of all, check your usb cable and try switching to another USB port after rebooting your PC

Hi, I've been transferring some stuff to my galaxy s and now i'm getting this error everytime i attach the USB (USB Device not being recognized). I already reinstalled the samsung USB drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled USB root hub drivers, used a different USB port and restarted both PC and galaxy. Anyone have any idea how i can get my device to get recognized by my pc?
no one's encountered this problem before?
I get this on and off - i'm on Win 7. I tried all 4 ports and my hub and sometimes it plays ball - sometimes not.
I often find if I change the phone from 'mass storage' to 'ask on connection' it seems to improve its chances.
Worth a try.
Homer
I tried this as well including turning USB debugging on and off.. no luck though. Only thing i haven't done is format the internal SD, but I dont want to go there unless there really is no chance of fixing this. Any help you be greatly appreciated!

i recently just bought a captivate from a seller and found out mines is doing the same thing havent had no luck getting it connected to pc to mount but does charge on data cable after seeing it has been modded to froyo 2.2 rom but trying to see if any one know away to fix this.
Hi all,
Firstly I'd like to acknowledge any problems/issues I take full responsibility for myself (no body’s fault but mine).
I went to upgrade from Darkyrom 9.5 to 10.1 on my GT-I9000 following the instructions given. Here’s what happened:
First attempt at flashing Ficeto via odin 1.7 (all from the same zip file Ficeto_JVH_I9000_Odin)
- After it started odin just hung. Left it for a while but after I realised nothing was going to happen rebooted the phone and got the PC!phone icon (so soft-bricked)
- Pulled the battery and waited for a little while. Reinserted the battery, booted into download mode (vol down+home+power) and started the process again.
- This time it began okay and I saw the blue progress bar on the phone
- after about 15-20 seconds I got the windows 7 sound for a USB device being disconnected and a popup message saying USB device not recognised etc. Odin came up with a bright red message saying failed.
Ever since then the phone is dead. Power button won’t do anything. Recovery mode won’t load. I can get into download mode but whenever I connect the phone to a laptop it just tells me USB device not recognised or USB device has malfunctioned.
I’ve tried it on two different laptops (Window 7 and windows XP) and with 2 different versions of kies and also with just the Samsung USB drivers (no kies).
Is my phone hard-bricked now? IS my only option for recovery a Jtag riff-box device?
Any help/guidance from here would be most appreciated.
as long as theres download mode its not really hardbricked. maybe try a different cable/port/... and/or hard-reset the phone.
i've had a situation very similar to this before but after trying various such things it started working again.
BTW this post does NOT belong in development section at all.
good luck
Might be a case for the jig method by the sound of it, search and you shall find

Humble apologies for putting this in the wrong section. Thanks for the advice too.
Guys I want to thank you. I decided to have a go on my work PC this morning and used a colleague's blackberry USB cable + Samsung USB drivers.
Worked first time. I now have Ficeto's 2.3 rom and it works wonderfully.
Not sure if it was the PC or the USB cable but either way thanks again.

It happen to me also. Same thing. I switched to a win7 pc and all was ok. On the first machine I had to install nexus s drivers and all was fine again.
I guess was something wrong there....
glad you got your phone working again mate. must be a weight off your mind haha

Okay a little backstory:
I was on an early version of CM9 but as i am selling the phone i decided to put a more stable version of it on there and downloaded CM7 -stable.
I flashed this in CWM and it worked fine.
I gave it a quick test and noticed all the google apps were missing, most importantly the market. So i booted into recovery and realised i had forgotten to put the zip on the SD card.
I then went into mounts and mounted USB, nothing happened...
From that point onwards the phone would not talk to the PC. even if i booted up into the phone, it would just show it as charging. I could not find any options in the menus for USB options.
After some extensive reading, i tried a few things, none of them had worked. I found a post mentioning some kernels have issues with USB, so i downloaded the recommended one and flashed it in CWM.
After rebooting, CWM was now orange and not blue and the option to flash from external card has gone.
I have also done some digging and there is a good posibility that the kernal that i flashed was for the GT I9000 (which is the american one, right?)
So as it is at the moment:-
I can get into CWM.
I can get into download mode through the 3 button combo.
I can get into download mode using home made jig.
I can boot the phone, but it boot loops.
I can not get the phone to be detected on the pc.
Things i have checked:
Cable will connect other phones.
Tried different cable to be sure.
Phone used to be detected, but downloaded drivers through kies again to be sure.
Closed Kies using task manager.
Nothing is coming up in network connections in device manager when phone is connected.
I'm out of ideas now, so £10 PayPal donation for anyone that comes up with the solution to fix it
If i can get it detected, i can use Odin to flash what i want.
Sounds like a drivers problem. You may need the 'Google driver' developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
When I had bootloops when I first installed CM9 I used heimdall to flash a the stock CM9 kernel. This gave me back CWM.
heimdall flash --kernel 'kernel.zip'
In the commandline.
Thanks for that,
I already had the Google USB drivers from when i installed the SDK to make some apps.
So i then gave Heimdall a try (Graphical Version), it seemed to suffer the same problem.
Reporting "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device."
I seem to remember the GUI saying I didn't have the correct drivers and it downloaded them for me.
The other thing worth a try is changing the USB port and reinstalling the correct drivers on that port.
I've not seen anything like that, it has not asked me for any drivers.
It's like the phone is not connected at all. nothing will detect it, i have even tried it on another PC.
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by installing on a port.
Well sometimes changing USB port will allow you to install new drivers. Although if you've tried it in another computer and it doesn't work then changing port may not help.
Does the phone appear in device manager when it's connected and in download mode?
Nope. Not coming up at all in the device manager. It didn't when it was booting fine. And it still doesn't in download mode. :-( I'm thinking the usb connector on the phone might be faulty.
But it was working up until trying to mount the USB in CWM

I don't suppose you have access to a Linux PC do you? Windows USB drivers are notoriously sucky. If you could plug it into a Linux PC and type 'lsusb' at a command line, that would at least show you that the device is really there.
I think I have a spare pc kicking around that I could use. I'll give it a go when I get home tonight.

Remove all the drivers completely from device manager for Samsung, then install fresh drivers and connect the cable when in download mode, hopefully it will recognize it
Are you sure the connector is clean? e.g. maybe there's dust in it.
I had that problem once, the connector was full of fabric fibers from some coat's pocket I had the phone in.
Suggestion 1 (Linux): I installed ubuntu, did not detected anything to even install any drivers. Detected my new phone fine.
Suggestion 2 (Uninstall drivers from device manager): I could not find any drivers named with the name Samsung in there.
Suggestion 3 (Clean port): I have some compressed air that i sprayed inside, it does look pretty clean and will continue to charge but still not connection on the pc.
To install the drivers for heimdall you have to run zdiag from inside the driver folder. Had to do this earlier on, the phone the other appeared as something other than Samsung composite usb or whatever it normally says
I tried this, and it displayed 9 devices after selecting show all. I seemed to recognise all of the items in the menu.
To be sure, I then disconnected the phone and re ran it to see if one of the items were missing, but it was the same number.
I too had problem with the usb connection on my i9000, and I was pretty sure my usb connector on the phone is somewhat damaged since it sometimes can only go to charging mode without being detected by my pc as a usb device. CWM instal is fine but ODIN can only detect the phone without able to flash the rom to the phone. The flashing will always stuck at the message "Setting Up Connection", I waited for 15 minutes and the flashing will eventually died. I retry the odin flash for 40 to 50 times and eventually the flashing will go through one time. Tried heidmall command line and the result is the same.
I have problem with Odin in the past. I bought a new laptop, running Win7 64 bit. Installed Samsung Kies to install the correct USB drivers for the phone. Then made sure that Kies wasn't running in the background. So tried using Odin. Odin was detecting the phone, but it was hanging at initialising connection. Odin was working fine on my old laptop running Win7 32bit. Long story short, I was having a few issues with my new laptop, reinstalled Win7 64bit, now Odin is working fine, have flashed the phone a few times using the new computer.
After flashing which kernel you started facing this problem?
Wipe ur phone,re-flash CM7(flash the nightly 181,it's completely stable),uninstall KIES,uninstall old usb drivers, install these usb drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956 ,check that USB storage mode is set as Mass Storage and then connect your phone. Also try enabling/disabling USB debugging

The point at which i could no longer mount the USB was when i selected "mount usb" from CWM. I later installed a new kernal which downgraded my CWM, removing the install from external SD option.
So I cant flash a re-flash a rom unless i can it onto the phone which without the USB working is near impossible.

You can directly download the ROM on your internal sd using dolphin browser or opera mobile
I can't do that either as the phone is currently boot looping.

My phone was working perfectly until a few days ago when I noticed that USB connection to PC stopped working. I was running imilkas CM9 v2. USB used to work perfectly and then randomly, it just stopped working, I don't have a clue what caused it because I did not flash anything on the phone.
When I connect my Phone to the Computer via USB cable, my phone start charging and nothing else happens. My computer does not even show that I connected a USB device.
I've tried 3 other computers with the drivers and the same issue (1 comp with xp and the others with win 7). Also, not to mention, I've tried multiple USB cables, including the original. I've tried USB Debugging on and off, doesn't make a difference.
I've tried ADB and it does not recognize the device either.
In CWM when I mount USB storage, it does not work.
In download mode, when I plug in the cable, nothing happens, odin does not detect any connection.
USB connection to the computer is Dead and it does nothing but charge my phone.
Here is a list of things I've already tried to fix the issue:
1. Factory Reset.
2. Used Mobile Odin, reverted to my Phone's Stock GB ROM (KK2). On stock GB, I tried Kies Air and that worked fine, but USB connection had the same issue
3. Formatted the Internal Storage
4. Removed the SIM Card and Micro SD card, still no luck.
5. re-installed CWM (without pc)
6. Installed Paranoid Android 0.2
7. Called Samsung... They said they wont service my phone because I'm located in Canada and I have the International Note. They told me I'd have to take it to the country I bought it from.
If anyone can offer any help that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Phone used to work perfectly fine before. Already flashed original rom, it did nothing. And I've already talked to Samsung. They won't help me.
I've already mentioned that in my op! I would be nice to hear suggestions/solutions other than the ones I've mentioned.
Can anyone please help me out with this? I even tried cleaning the usb port a bit more, but no avail. I am guessing the file that recognizes a PC connection got corrupted some how. Anyone know how to update or replace that?

I've been struggling with this issue for the past 2 months and have gotten sick of this issue.:crying: I've tried all that was possible based on my knowledge and now I need some serious help. I've posted this issue in the Q&A before and about 3 people responded with suggestions that I had already mentioned in thread. I believe this issue might be caused by a file that has gotten corrupted on the phone because i've even replaced the hardware (usb port) and it didn't change anything. When I asked them why it happened and how to prevent that same thing to happen again, they didn't answer.

I am well versed in replacing hardware components myself. The usb module I bought from ebay does exactly the same thing as the original one. It too charges but does not recognize PC connectivity which means it wasnt the usb module which was defective, its something else!
I would love to send it in for repair, but Samsung WON'T service my phone because I live in Canada and they do not sell the international Note here. When I called them they told me to take it to where I bought it from (which was in UAE). Since I am not going there and have no plans to go there, I am stuck with a phone that can't be warrantied!
Any one know how to fix this issue?

I appreciate the suggestions tho
Try another set of driver from Samsung.
The set in the file from link below works perfectly for me:

If it does not work then, maybe, try to change rom. Load a custom rom.zip to external sdcard and flash using CWM.

Ok here is the solution. It worked for me. Hope it helps someone
1. download latest version of kies for PC
2. uninstall previous kies (if any) and install new one.
3. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284#
Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode. (Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.)
4. Plug the USB cable.

I faced a similar problem a few days ago. Here's what I did :
Try cleaning micro usb port by rubbing alcohol using paper strips. They should be thin enough so that you can clean both top and bottom part of the port. Then let it dry under the sun or by itself.Make sure that you don't blow any air into the port else condensation may occur.
By the way, is it monsoon season there in Canada ?

Almost same situation here from the highlighted above. when I plug my charger in the usb it just charge the phone and PC cannot detect it. Also, it only charge the phone when i reboot it. If I unplug the charger while the phone is on, and plug the charger back, it will not charge. However, when I insert the usb cable in my phone, there is a notification in my phone which says "usb connector connected" but the PC cannot detect my phone for mass storage, as well as for Kies and Odin.
My usb port was already replaced by Samsung but same problem still occurs. It could be a software/configuration related issue. Or could it be a usb brick? Pls help.
have you tried to put the phone in download mode and checked if odin is able to detect the phone.. what rom are you on.. have you tried to flash a stock rom ?
I have the same problem ... :crying:
