Hi all
I am about to switch my phone with my GF's phone. I've made a backup of my data, but I still need to backup her data for the switch. I was thinking of rooting (Done that to my Galaxy Ace before), but the only option I could find was flashing a new kernel, and I'm afraid that I'd lose all of her data.
Is there a way that does not involve flasing a new rom or kernel, but still gets me a temp root on the S2? (I will flash after that temp root tho, but it's important to backup her data.)
Thanks for your time (and help)

Flashing a rooted kernel will not wipe out your data.
It just changes the kernel and adds root.
What data are your trying to save?

Basicly, everything. From phone numbers to saved game data (and whats app logs etcetera)
I use Titanium Backup to save my apps and data.
I just export my contacts to my SD card.
Call Logs Backup & Restore for the call logs
SMS Backup & Restore for text messages
For the unrooted phone, buy Backup To Gmail from the market for 1.99. Will back up all SMS, mms, call logs. Contacts should be synced to gmail anyway. As for the apps, I don't know a good one that doesn't require root. The above poster is right though, a successful root shouldn't require you to wipe. Good luck!

Thanks for your help guys. Turns out that my gf didn't have the sII. She has the S plus which was easy to root and backup using titanium backup.
Thanks,

backup Titanium Backup, APN backup and restore (if you are unlocked) and Bookmark SB.
When I flash a new ROM, I will start from stock, Factory reset, install titanium backup files, APN backup Files, an update.zip file and the new rom. It's pretty quick and painless.....
I want to root my galaxy tab but I don't feel comfortable doing that unless I can fully backup everything and be able to restore easily. Can you guys recommend something?

Root using Z4Root..only one button to press and your tablet is rooted..

titanium only backs up apps, app data and system data. It does not backup the firmware, radio, etc.
so if something is screwed up by rooting, or flashing a different firmware, it cannot do "full recover" if that is what you mean with it; it only recovers apps and system settings.
for a "full backup / restore" solution check this thread:

i agree with the post in regards to Z4Root, worked easily and flawlessly though

Yes I do mean a FULL backup of everything, not just apps

Maybe I'm retarded but how do I enter the code? I don't see a way to do it. My galaxy tab is sprint network enabled but not activated, wifi only.

The code is entered on the dialer part of the contacts app... Commonly known as the dialer with buttons from 0 to 9 with the additional * and # characters... Surely you must have seen such a contraption on previous phones...
If you can't use the dialer then get a SIM card in it....
Yup, there is no dialer on this phone. Downloaded aDialer and it says cannot make or take calls on the galaxy tab. Wtf?

Thanks for recommending TB, luckily I backed up before I bricked my sprint galaxy tablet. Was able to flash with Odin using Zoinks Sprint SPH-P100 pit and tar. Got my tab to boot and easily restore all apps and user data.

This really sounds stupid even to me. But how do I restore?
I installed Titanium a while back and now would like to reset to factory. Obviously there is a restore button in Titanium which I can use to restore individual apps but how do you batch restore.
The other even more stupic question is how do I restore if by resetting to factory Titanium is wiped as well? Do I now have to re-download titanium and expect it to find the backup data on the SD card which I hope will stay intact during factory reset or do I remove the card during factory restore and still expect the re-downloaded titanium to pickup the backed up data?
Hi mutant.,With my knowledge and experience over my gtab I can say that factory reset or wiping data would be only the Rom portion of your internal sd.so u can save your data in SD. Still to be much safer save it in external SD.once flashed again with new Rom. install titanium and restore all your data and apps.you can do batch restore with titanium pro.for double safety I backup everything on ext SD and also in CWM before flashing new Rom. Hope this helps.I'm also a learner for now..hence thought this would help you from learner prespective.dev's and exp's can correct me if I'm wrong..

Backup is stored on sd card in titanium backup folder (internal or external youcan choose that). Redownload titanium backup if wiped after rom installation and restore. Press menu button in titanium backup there is a batch option. TIP: Edit filters in titanium backup to show backed up applications only (or user apps) and then use the batch feature so u dont have to search through all apps.
Thanks guys, very useful tips!

Could your SGT be a P1010? cause AFAIK it does not have a calling feature and I don't think executing the number is the only way to reset your phone, CMIIW.
Is there a way to back up your current or original rom before you flash another rom?
I've got a 6 month old OB which I want to root & install an ICS rom but one thing I have not been able to find out:
Can I root it without wiping it first? I've heard plenty about Titanium Backup but that needs root access first.
Alternatively, what is the best way to backup all the apps & settings ahead of time?
I did a search and couldn't find clear answers to this, sorry if it has been asked before.

Rooting a phone you don't have to wipe anything. After getting a root you'll be able to make a real backup. Then you can wipe and flash any rom. Also you can flash a fresh rom without root, so you can "revert" rooting.
Good programs to backup your data:
- CWM - making a nandroid backup - best method to backup all data on your phone
- Titanium backup - very functional, professional program
- Go Backup - to store contacts, smses, call-logs and installed programs
IF you are on 2.2 you don't need to wipe anything.
If you are on 2.3.4 you need to wipe everything.

You can root 2.2.2 without losing anything. To be safe : Make backups of your contacts, hopefully your email should still be on the email server and if you really need those text messages then you can write them down. If it is really really important to keep the information rather not risk it.
Back To The Original Topic : If you want to just backup apps (not other stuff) then ES File Explorer can do that for you.
I've rooted my phone and I want to get the new MaximusHD ROM (4.3, HTC Sense, Rooted)
How can I replace my ROM while preserving my data (WhatsApp messages, pictures, etc)?
I am sorry but I am coming from the world of Apple and iTunes did everything for me. Android is a totally new beast!

What do you mean by user data?
Pics music videos etc, basically anything in your SD card will be saved.
I think.
App data, you need to backup the whole app. That's how Ti backup works. You can't download the app form play store and apply your user data to it.
EDIT: just make a nandroid. Then backup whatever you need. If the restore fails, then you have something to fall back on.

Go to TWRP (personal favorite) or CWM.
Then, back up EVERYTHING.
Except media. But I'm not sure that's actually an option lol.
Oh yeah no need to back up the cache or the recovery either.
I believe CWM doesn't let you choose, you just hit back up and it backs up what it needs to.
Note: you can not selectively restore from a nandroid very easily. It is meant to be sort of a time machine, so if something screws up, you just restore your phone back to how it was.

Yeah, TWRP lets you back up all your info. You can pick and choose and it lets you back up the current rom, so if you have issues you can go back to it. Copy that folder to a computer, because what you want to do is a dirty flash and might run into problems. It's best to flash by wiping clean and then replacing or you run into problems with the rom with some of the data.
Just my opinion.
My advice would be to read a lot more about how nandroid backups work and about how backup apps like Titanium Backup work as well before trying anything.
That being said the above advice about doing a nandroid from recovery is a must, especially if you're new to the android world and aren't sure what you're doing. The nandroid is your fail-safe in case anything goes wrong. It will allow you to restore your phone back to exactly how it was when you did the backup.
As far as bringing the app data that you want into your newly flashed rom, this is what I do:
1. Have a rooted device
2. Download Titanium Backup (I bought the pro version, I think you need it to do batch backup/restore)
3. Batch backup all user apps (I also backup my call log and sms/mms messages)
4. Reboot device to recovery and perform a nandroid backup
5. Flash new rom
6. Wipe data/Factory reset
7. Reboot into new rom
8. After doing all the initial device setup (google account, etc.) install Titanium Backup and restore all missing apps NOTE: RESTORE ONLY THE APPS NOT THE DATA!
9. Now this is the part that I do that technically isn't recommended because restoring data can cause issues but it's the only way I've found to restore app data that otherwise can't be restored. Do a batch "restore all apps and data" but select "data only" and "deselect all" and go through and manually select only the apps you really need to restore the data (this can also be done manually through Titanium but I still use the batch function). Also I restore the call log and sms/mms at this step.
Hopefully this helps. Best advice I can give you though is before you do anything, make sure you understand all of the steps completely. I've lost everything too many times because I didn't know what I was doing.

Question:
Why can't he restore apps and data together? I've anyways done that, and it's seemed to have worked for me. Maybe I just didn't notice any lost data?
Also. Restoring with the free version is a pita because you have to give it permission for every app individually.
Just saying.
And you do not need to wipe your media, but I recommend that you back it up.
Also: WOAH WOAH WOAH. Did you just tell the OP to flash a ROM, THEN wipe?
I'm pretty darn sure you should not do that.

The reason I say not to restore data for every app is that not every app needs it's data restored to get everything back (i.e. Google Hangouts, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and I've always been warned that restoring data can cause issues. So my reasoning is the less I restore the better.
And I know using the free version of Titanium Backup is a PITA, that is why I said I use the paid version.
I never said to wipe media (I assume you mean the virtual sdcard) I said to wipe data/factory reset (the name of the option in CWM)
And there is nothing wrong with wiping after a flash. The wipe gets rid of user apps/data, anything installed with the rom is fine. If I'm mistaken, I apologize. However, I have never had an issue wiping after a flash.
If the OP doesn't want to follow my advice that's fine, I was simply describing what I've been doing on various devices for the last couple of years.
Hi Guys,
So I've been using my HTC One for a few months and now decided to finally root it. The problem: Rooting it will wipe all of its data and I've got a lot...
So here's my question:
Is it possible to perform a Full Backup with Apps, App data(savegames) , contacts, messages, call log and maybe even all the files on the internal storage.
I'm not rooted and got Android 4.2.2. It doesn't have to be a All-in-one tool, the important part is that I don't lose anything
Im looking forward to your response

As per my knowledge , unlike earlier android versions .... there will not be any data losses ....try this rooting video tutorial

If you really want to backup your apps try 'App backup & restore' or similar apps .... but they can only backup the apps not the app data
To backup an apps completely as you see it , you need apps like Titanium Backup ... but it requires root access
Hope it helps...
