[Q] In what Heroic direction do I go?

Hi guys... I have a few questions for you about my Hero. Forgive me for not yet having the same level of knowledge that many of you guys have. I am certain that I can contribute in some way, as well. My phone details:
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel version: 2.6.27-533ce29d
Build number: 1.56.651.2 CL5027
Software version: 1.56.651.2
Hardware version: 0002
1. I've read several stories where a number of phones were returned because they couldn't be updated when the new update was released. Is this an absolute fact, that it can't be updated, or is there an error in code somewhere that made it reject the update and there is a known workaround? The answer to this question obviously dictates my forward motion.
I have the typical problem apps, and am getting no joy from youtube. Presently, I'm surfing with good speeds, but market is non-existent.
I like having Sprint tv, when I'm having to sit and wait somewhere.
I have time today and tomorrow to get things ironed out, but will be extrmemly busy after that, like 20 hours a day studying. I'm hoping to get some direction that will give me complete functionality, but will require the least setup. I am quite computer savy, and repaired this phone, to this point, in a day or 2, without asking a single question of anyone. I traced down problems, and solved issues. Seen APN, and TCP errors (don't believe it completely, since I can authenticate on the web). Know that some issues are url problems, etc.
The following questions are based upon the answer to question number 1.
2. Can this phone be updated?
2a. If yes, What do you recommend... 2.1? What rom do you suggest, for full stock-like functionality? Will I lose Sprint tv? Pointers/direction? (pancake??, superhero??)
2b. If no, What rom do you suggest, for full stock-like functionality? Will I lose Sprint tv? Pointers/direction?
Before repairing the phone, I actually tried to update it from my computer, but it was rejected. I turned off my security software and tried again. I noticed that while using XP sp2, a windows program that was incorporated starting with sp2, DEP (data execution prevention) didn't like the actions that the update was taking, and arrested it very shortly after starting (yet the window cycled forever). I assume that many people wouldn't be this observative, and recognize that this was happening. It was halting an HTC file that utilized storage memory (similar to buffer overrun exploits - the reason DEP halted it), for temporary storage of the files to be used for the update. That file was as follows:
C:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Sync\Mobile Phone Monitor\FsyncServer.exe
And the way to prevent it from continuing to do so is:
1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Click Add.
9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
10. Click Open
11. Click Apply
12. Click Ok
I guess what I'm sort of suggesting, is that this might be why anyone ever had problems updating, with the exception that OTA also said there wasn't an update.
So, back to the original question. Is it true that some Heros can't be updated? I don't want to force something, and brick, if you know what I mean. I completed the setting that will allow it to go forward (listed above), but haven't tried to update since. I felt that I really needed to ask you guys first, before I made a mistake that I'd regret. Should I try again? Before I started working on the phone I did try OTA and it said there wasn't an update. Now I don't have that option anymore. After repairing the phone, I've lost updates. Am I stuck with 1.5? With my run of the mill phone desires (except that it be fully functional), should I keep 1.5?
I did see gmail 2.3 apk, but is that compatible with 1.5? This looks like is would solve the market issue, if I could use it.
I did read about gscript and addressing mms (although I'm sure that's very old news to you guys), but if in fact I can't update this phone, it might be one of my only alternatives. If that is my only choice, are their also additional scripts to address everything I need to fix (all the normal issues)?
Additionally, it seems that many apps register with the phone/user. So, when you are using a used phone, many apps are still registered as functional. Does flashing a new rom affect the OS and apps? Will I loose the already registered/functioning apps? With a complete upgrade, will I gain functionality of some key features, but lose all other previously enabled apps? In other words, will I gain update, and market, and lose sprint tv?
I have read a lot. With things the way they should be, I've not been able to quite determine what I need to do. With all this being said, How do I go forward and achieve a fully functioning phone? What is the best choice of path's to take for me?
Rooting? I have seen the one-click, and think I'd be correct in that I need something containing Sense UI. Forgive me for asking a stupid question... but the rom is only the menu accessibility, correct? Is there something straight out of the box setup, or do all roms contain configuration notes?
I'm satisfied with stock features, if they work, and adding other useful things like tethering. Since I'll be so busy, I'll have little time to do much else. But don't get me wrong. I have 10 PC's in my house, with only 2 people living here. I'd love to customize the crap out of it. It's just not going to happen any time soon, due to my brutal study schedule. So for now, I just want it to work like it should, on a B mvno.
Do I go north, south, east, or west????
Could someone chime in that can give me direction, based on everything I've stated. Your response is so graciously appreciated.

Umm well I'm not sure why you're having problems with any update, someone who's far more experienced can maybe tell you but as far as roms I think it depends on whether you like sense or wanna go froyo. Cyanogen mod 6.1 stable (2.2) is nice & highly customizable however there's also AOSP roms (2.2) that some people feel is quicker than cyanogen however they aren't as customizable as cyanogen, in addition there are tons of GREAT themes for both. Also we've had a ton of work on an odex AOSP gingerbread rom (2.3) not yet stable but works good for most & on that note a great themer also put together a themed AOSP gingerbread rom (2.3) that looks good & about stability I'm not so sure on but I would recommend those roms. Although with these roms YES you will lose sprint apps like TV & vvm etc. However people have posted these apks in the theme thread section to work on roms like cyanogen & AOSP. If you do like sense roms there's a couple that are still live in the development section like nfinite & nfx I believe. Hope some of that info helps

Sort of. I can't remember which version I was at when I rooted but I remember I downgraded to do it. But if you go in the development section you will find a thread that shows & gives you what you need to root. So you should root. Then flash a recovery image such as clockwork mod or amon ra. When I rooted I used the recovery from the downloadable app (Rom manager) in the market & that one was clockdwork mod. It's worked great for me so I've been using it ever since. Then backup whatever you are running currently. Then flash whatever rom you want. I'm about to see if I can link you to a root thread then once you do so I can give you a dl link to cm 6.1 stable. Will you be able to root on 1.5?? I don't completely know...

[Q] New to tablets and ROM

Hello ya'll, I'm new to the forum, I joined because of the wealth of information here.
So I'm not new to Android, had one ever since I was 16. I rooted both my droid phones(droid X with that awesome slider keyboard, and RAZR MAXX) to remove those pesky bloatware apps, but didn't ROM them, as it just wasn't something I wasn't aware of when I did it. So rooting was as far as I got.
But rooting and ROM-ing a tablet seems like it could be a daunting job, I'm new to the tablet world But I already have most of the tools, from previous roots, minus a few that are platform specific that I'm currently downloading to support the new CROMBi-X
I figure I'll go about getting everything I need, so when I get my tablet back from the shop, I'll be able to dive right into the CROMBi ROM.

Question 1: Asus doesn't have the standalone unlock tool on their website. How do I go about getting that tool to unlock the tablet? Was it done OTA or downloaded and installed onto the tablet?
I have searched a few places, and browsed the developer forums, but haven't come up with a surefire way yet. I've seen everything from asking ASUS to unlock the tablet, to flashing CWM recovery, and than flashing a rooted version of the stock ROM, 've read several of the forums, but I need a little bit of "English" on the topic, as this is something new to me. I did come across a root.zip link but I'm not entirely sure that is what I am looking for, or if it is version/BLoader specific. If it is, then that pretty much covers that question.
Question 2: Are all the drivers on the ROM? Or do I need to use something like [ADB/FB/APX Driver] Universal Naked Driver 0.7?
Question 3: Mods. Are they downloaded OTA from the play store, or is there a list of compatible mods for the ROM? I realize that most of them are probably cosmetic right? I'm probably asking in the wrong forum, but since this is LINUX based, once rooted, if I put Ubuntu on the tablet, and then run a ROM on top of it? or Do I have to choose between one or the other?
I'm only asking because I run a few programs that aren't able to run on the android platform that I use for recreational purposes.
Anyway, that about covers a few of the base questions I have for now. Time to get ready for work. Thanks for any help in advance!

For 2:
It's been a while since I rooted however I think you only need fastboot to be able to put the custom recovery on the tablet. If you have ADB/FB drivers already installed your pc should see your tablet without an issue. I don't know what APX is.
For 3:
Not sure what you mean by Mods. And last I checked I don't think that you can and Linux to this tablet yet however even if you could you only get one or the other.
Oh and make sure you read through all of the instructions for rooting and roming

First you need to determine what firmware you are running now and decide which JB version you want to run.
Check under Settings > About Tablet > Software version. On stock your firmware version and bootloader version are identical.
If you are on JB 4.3 you have either 10.26.1.7 or 10.26.1.18 (if you have the former, update to .18)
If you are on JB 4.4.2 you have 11.4.1.17
On JB 4.3
a) You can root the tablet without unlocking the bootloader with Towelroot v1.
b) You can unlock, flash CWM and then flash sbdag's stock rooted rom, one of several custom roms or just the root.zip
On JB 4.4.2
Right now there is no way to root without unlocking the bootloader and flashing a custom recovery first.
Once unlocked and with CWM installed, you can flash sbdag's rooted stock rom or flash the root.zip.
CROMi-X 7.0 for 4.4.2 is in the works. I do not know if the other custom roms (CM, CROMi-X 6, CROMbi-KK) are compatible with the 11.4.1.17 bootloader yet, but that's just a matter of time.

Try it. I did not have to install new adb/fastboot drivers and the device drivers installed on my PC automativcally. YMMV
Open Device Manager, then connect the tablet. Let the drivers install and see if it shows up in Device Manager.
Then boot the tablet into fastboot, connect it to PC and see if it shows up as a fastboot device.
Enable USB debugging in Developer Options, then connect the tablet booted into Android and see if it shows up as ADB interface in Device Manager.
If you need drivers you can use the ones you mentioned.

You'll find mods in the rom thread or at least the links for those that work with that rom.. No OTA updates

There's a thread in the TF700 dev section on dual booting Android and Ubuntu. Not aware that anybody has tried it on the TF701.

Thanks for the link Sleepy! I had searched the website a couple times before, but I must have missed that part of it. Every other time I went somewhere to find it, it came back page unavailable. I'm really disliking this Kuwaiti right now! Well I won't know until I get the tablet back what JB is on it, but I imagine it would be sent back to a factory setting because of the issues I was having, or just get a whole new tablet all together depending on what was causing it not to charge.
I appreciate the clarification on everything guys, without the tablet in my hands I'm pretty much downloading everything I can that might help me out. I already have CWM, and several versions of it to be on the safe side.
I have been doing nothing but non-stop research, but it's daunting to try and go through 115 pages of information and tools, and version changes and what's compatible and how to use them. Watching videos has simplified it a little bit.
The reason I asked about Ubuntu, was I saw it dual booted to an older CROMi 2.X on the 700T
I used to run XP pro/Ubuntu on my laptop. Which was really nice when I needed a lightweight OS to free up processing power. Well before I had to format due to a near catastrophic drive failure and unrepairable data corruption. Anyway, that is a project for another time, one thing at a time!

List of repairs done
So what I thought was a simple battery not charging issue turned out to be a host of things. I had to have the LCD, Touchpadboard, Docking cable and LCD cable replaced, luckily I was under warranty. I imagine that would have been expensive!

For seasoned developers: I337 NC1 At&t crisis-help sought

I've been trying to root my phone for a while, I've done it before: both my S II and S III were international variants, and rooting those devices was very simple. But after getting an S IV from America and consensually downloading a samsung issued update -- I had yet to read up on the disadvantages of knox -- my rooting and android experience took a turn for the worse.
Long story short -- I know developers are a proud bunch who value their time -- I tried rooting my phone yesterday after almost smashing my phone on a coffee table. They say it's a well known side effect of Touchwiz, but I'll leave that to you.
I used a towelroot.com root -- a wonderful tool, if I may say so. After that, I visited the CM website and picked out the compatible CM11. I never got to flashing it though, as my problems arose while installing a recovery.
I had downloaded an app, a something recovery or another. They had an option to flash recoveries on there--it would download your recovery for you and do all the work, which seemed plausible as most video tutorials demonstrated. To my astonishment, doing so bricked my phone.
I tracked back, looked for the samsung stock rom, downloaded all 2.2 gb's of it and flashed it. It worked. My phone was functional but I suspect something within it stinks. My device, apparently for security reasons, wont let my wifi or 4g to establish a connection. It's making it impossible for me to fix this problem as I can't root my device or flash a custom rom.
About Device:

Baseband: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2

If I could find my original stock 4.2.2 NC1 version and get simple instructions on how to re-install it back to stock version, I'd be very grateful.
If you know how I could fix the internet issue on the MK2 one, and provide some simple instructions of how to root it, I'd be grateful too.
If you think neither would work, and have something else in mind, Im open to your suggestions.

Two things:
1. You're posting in the wrong forum, this is the forum for the S4 Active i537, a different phone than the regular S4 i337.
2. The i337 had a locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked. Therefore it is impossible to install a custom recovery other than SafeStrap and it is impossible to install ROMs that are not TouchWiz-based ROMs.

Lollipop 5.1.1 on T715?

OK I'm a complete newbie here. I bought the 8" S2 International unlocked version from Amazon and will take it to AT&T to activate it tomorrow. It's on 5.0.2 and is not seeing any OTA updates. Does anyone know if there's a way to get 5.1.1 OTA? If not, does anyone know if Samsung has commented as to whether they'll release 5.1.1, or even Marshmallow, for this device or will I have to go to a custom ROM?
Also, is there an absolute beginners guide to this site? I've been reading through the threads and keep seeing terms like odin, twrp, and many others that I don't know what they mean and I'd like to figure out.

i just received the same device yesterday and so far, it's working just fine on at&t: including data full phone features (i wasn't aware that this version of the Tab S2 had a full fledged phone). i inserted my nano sim from my dual-sim note5 and the S2 configured everything automatically. also, i didn't see an OTA when i checked yesterday and there's nothing at sammobile.com which is where one can generally find firmware (stock ROM) for Samsung devices. any custom ROM right now will likely be 5.0.2.

Odin = Windows based application used to flash firmware to Samsung devices.
TWRP = a custom recovery that - once your phone is rooted (similar to admin privileges on windows pc) - allows one to flash a custom ROM or other components/features not on a stock device. you can also create backups/nandroids of your device so you can restore your device if something goes wrong (similar to resorting a windows system image to a new hard drive). always, always backup when trying things out. tutorials are here, but sometimes not easily located via search. :good:

Steps to Upgrade S6 Edge G925A (AT&T version) to Android 7.0 Nougat

I am a newbie and this is the first time I have tried anything out of the way to update my phone. I have an unlocked S6 edge AT&T version which was running MM 6.0.1. I wanted to update it to the latest Android Nougat and in order to do that I started searching online, but there was no such straight post or article where I can get everything in one place. I found a lot of information and many ways to upgrade the firmware but not all the steps were perfectly placed.
Anyways, I referred to many articles and posts and realized that it could be risky but doable so I went ahead and did it successfully. Though I faced few errors and issues but I found most of the resolution here at xda-developers and other online forums. I am writing this post to help all S6 edge owners who want to upgrade to Android 7.0.
My Phone Details:
Model: SM-G925A (S6 Edge AT&T)
Build: G925AUCS5DPJ1
Android: 6.0.1
There are two major steps involved to upgrade to the latest android version.
1. Flash the firmware with the higher security patch (keeping the device at Android 6) using ODIN software.
2. Upgrade the firmware to Android 7 using ADB software.
[Note: I might be using flash, upgrade interchangeably]
Downloads

Latest ODIN tool (I used 3.10.6)
ADB tool (I used 25.0.3 but you can find latest version here)
Firmware:
First you need to flash you ROM to reach G925AUCS5DPK5 build. You can download this file from here.
Refer to Post:

Then you have to update the firmware to get Android 7 using this fie SS-G925AUCS5DPK5-to-U5EQA8-UP (put a .zip after this file to make it recognizable by the tool)
Step 01: Flash latest security patch

My recommendations:
1. Use 3.10.6 version.
2. Unpack the G925AUCS5DPK5.zip file and you will find 4 different .tar.md5 files namely AP, BL, CP and CSC.
3. Use all 4 files at once in ODIN. Do not use only AP. If you use only AP file then your phone will be updated to the latest security patch and will work fine but it won't update the baseband version and will still show it as G925AUCS5DPJ1 even though your latest build is G925AUCS5DPK5. This will create problem while going to Android 7.0.
4. Take proper back up of all your files before going ahead using Samsung SmartSwitch.(Download Links : Windows, Mac). This way you can take back up easily as well as your pc will have the latest USB drivers.
5. Make sure your phone baseband and build are same as G925AUCS5DPJ1.
6. Charge you phone at least 70% before going ahead. It is just a precaution in case this process takes longer than expected. (Mine was finished in 4 minutes)

My Recommendations:
1. Use the version I have recommended above instead of going to the latest version (I faced some issue with the latest one and had to go back to this version)
2. Instead of opening the command prompt from shift+right click. Use run or search cmd and open it as administrator.
3. Change the SS-G925AUCS5DPK5-to-U5EQA8-UP.zip to OTA.zip or any shorter name. It will be easy to type the command.
4. If you face any error try using adb kill-server and then use adb sideload <ota.zip>.
5. Be patient this process will take some time. Mine took 25 minutes to complete.
6. Again keep your phone battery charged enough to survive the process.
7. After restart my phone stuck at black screen AT&T logo for 5 minutes. So don't get worried just wait, it will work.
8. Read all the instructions twice on the links provided before going ahead. If you are not sure of any instruction you can search xda forum and you will find relevant information.
Problems/Issues I faced
1. Reduced Storage: After updating my phone to build G925AUCS5DPK5, I realized the phone is only showing 16gb storage while my phone internal storage was 64gb. ( I found the root cause when I got my 3rd error, for the storage issue I was not bothered enough but wanted to go ahead so that I can get Nougat soon)
2. ADB Terminated: My phone got this error when I was updating it to Nougat. (The error looked like this : terminate called after throwing an instance of std::logic_error what() ). I searched online I found out that this is happening because of the adb version I am using, so I downloaded another version and it went through without this error but gave me the below one.
3. Status 7 Error: Again in adb I faced this error. And the error looked like this: 'Verifying current system..."/system/csc/contents.db" has unexpected contents. Error Pic Link.
I searched online and found out that this could be related to CSC file which I have not updated in my first step. So this time I again performed my first step using Odin tool but I selected the 3 files except the AP and ran the process. Yippy, I got my storage back and in adb there was no any error going forward.
Conclusion: I got Nougat on my At&T S6 Edge but I faced few issues. Being a new comer it was not much difficult provided you have the information and passion to do it. The steps mentioned here are very specific to S6 Edge but it can be used for other versions as well. You only have to make sure you have the current files and build combination otherwise your phone could be bricked. I hope this post will be helpful for the users.

Step 1) I used ODIN v3.12 as described above. Loaded all 4 files, BL AP CP CSC
***Basic missing step in the guide was to use ODIN correctly, you need to put your phone into upload mode.***
***Basic step, to prepare to use adb you must enable USB debugging while you have the Step 1 complete before you start Step 2***
Step 2) I was getting the errors thrown with ADB terminated and did some research. You have to use v25.0.3 or else it throws the std::logic_error what() error. It was challenging to track down that version of the adb but I found it here: https://www.izzysoft.de/ftp/local/android/
***Basic Step, in order to use adb, you must put your phone in recovery mode*** (and be sure you use v25.0.3)

i am curious, what specific issues did you have? should i stay on EQA8?
i had success with this method following the instructions and commentary going from DPK5 > EQA8. One additional thing to note is that each step of the process (odin, adb) will wipe the contents of the phone. I backed up with samsung switch, but it doesn't quite capture all the settings so you may want to use something else.

Yes. You can jump from whatever baseband you have to most of full Odin files.

Is there any way to update my device using ODIN without losing the root? Just curious. Switching to Fi and I unlocked my phone from the carrier, but since its 5.0.1 it wont run the Project Fi app which requires 5.1+ to activate and operate.

I would like to know why it seems like the only threads on how to upgrade a SM-G925A from 5.1.1 to Nougat lack clear language, in an organized fashion, that would allow those most challenged by the process to accomplish the task with the least amount of frustration. I really cannot comprehend how it is that someone considered a "Senior Member" is permitted to instruct on complex procedures, when it is apparent the person does not have a fluency in the language being used. I don't say this as an insult to anyone's culture or ethnicity, it just adds to the difficulty. Where are the moderators (Admins) when you need clarity. There must be someone who can impart the step-by-step procedure concisely. This forum is not useful for its intended purpose otherwise.

What you talking about? This is very easy process. But there is even easier of you read another threads and learn from XDA or YouTube how to use ODIN. When you ready to try Odin you can flash firmware from here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3611271 . This is 100% stock AT&T Nougat 7.0 Odin firmware use by Best Buys or Smasung to restore phones.
BTW Senior Members are mostly who build this forum. So just follow instructions, sit back and enjoy. If you need more clarification use your best friend Google or YouTube.

First of all, not admitting your English grammar is in need of some fine tuning doesn't help to clarify the issue. Additionally, combining both ADB sideloading and Odin, without clearly delineating which zip files need to be acquired for accomplishing the task using one or the other method, just adds to the confusion. I upgraded my phone using Odin and the "OCF" "tar" files. But, I was getting confused as to whether I also needed to use ADB to get to "OCF". I started off at "BOJ9". Not wanting to brick my phone led to much trepidation. I wanted to be absolutely sure. The main question I needed clarified was whether I could go from "BOJ9" to "OCF" without needing to go through each iteration. Many people had asked this question, but no specific answer was ever given. Thus, my frustration. I did eventually figure it out, but coming to XDA looking for a clear answer was not the solution. I see a lot of posturing, responders getting snarky telling the confused it's in some thread yet to be dug into or just being rude. Just help. Really, if that's not why you're here, move on.

First of all English is my sixth language I know 5 more, how much more you know, second this is international forum open for whole world, third I'm almost 55 years old and understand all process ( this telling me one or two things about you) . You must be millennial who thinks he is most important person on world. If you don't like it move on to different place.
And yes you can go strait by ODIN from your build to QCF with out any problem, but seems like you not read enough.
O! One more you must be Polish because only this people critique other people's language ability, I know because I was like this once.

So, here it starts, attitude. I'm 56 and will shortly be 57. I am no millennial. Secondly, perhaps you should focus on your English grammar skills. While you may speak several languages, your skill with written English is atrocious. Even if your English grammar was passable, you have no skill at writing an organized and cohesive text. A simple, step-by-step guide to accomplish the task. Putting up a few links mixed with gibberish is not helpful. It's lazy and sloppy. Have some pride in your work. Exhibit some maturity and avoid superfluous writing.
