Hello,
I've searched here and there more and more before asking this question, but I didn't find an answer.
what does odin do in my mobile? How does it flash the ROMs?
I ask this question because I haven't and don't like windows. I use linux and want to flash ROMs.
Second thing: can I flash ROMs and CWM from the phone itself without odin? (ROM Manager couldn't recognize my GSM phone), I want to know the way.

Hi There,
Not quite sure if there is a non-windows version of Odin. You can flash ROMs later on without Odin but you will need it to install stock firmware, e.g. upgrade to higher version, Froyo to GB 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 to 2.3.6.. And you will need it also to flash the ClockWorkMod recovery which is specialized for flashing custom ROMs. Check this post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17400158&postcount=1
I am not forcing you to update your firmware. Just have a look on what Odin does as shown on the pix.
DO NOT use ROM manager as it is known to brick our phones. We already have a lot of cases here wherein users played around with ROM manager and bricked their phone.. Your lucky it did not do any damage on your phone.
Anyway, maybe there is a way for virtual boxes to run windows on linux? not quite sure on how others do it though..
"A Thanks a day, keeps the trouble away.."
First: I have already upgraded firmware to GB 2.3.4 Arabic version via odin on my friends PC.
Second: I will not use ROM Manager anymore!
Third: I read that the usb libraries of linux are different from the windows libs, so running odin via "wine" or "virtual box" will brick my phone!
Fourth: I want just to know what does odin or CWM do? Do they format device memory then extract the zip file and copy its contents to internal memory or what?
Sent from my Galaxy Mini GT-5570 using XDA application.
2 things I know about odin is that it is used to flash stock ROMs and flash the stock recovery. It simply overwrites what is installed on your phone.
As for CWM, I guess you are right about formatting the system memory and extracting the system files of the ROM that you will be flashing. One thing for sure is that you cannot flash stock ROMs via CWM and vice versa. Cannot install custom ROMs via Odin.
I guess you need your friend's help one more time. You need to have at least CWM v4.0.0.5 which you can find on the dev section (tj_style's threads). Once you have that installed, you can go away with windows pc since the newer versions of CWM are flashable via zip file ( squadzone's mod of v5.0.2.8 and RZrecovery).

Thank you for helping me!
One more question: can I flash squadzone's CWM directly via odin?

No, you have to flash v4 first.. No Odin packages were made for v5 unfortunately..
Hope you press the Thanks buttons.. Would really appreciate it..
Sorry, I was using XDA app so I couldn't press thanks buttons.

Hello,
I just bought and received a tmobile 16 gb tab today off of ebay. Im not new to android. I have a droid pro and tmobile g2x. Both have cwm and able to replace factory recovery with cwm.
The tab is already rooted via superoneclick, chainfire's patch been applied.
I tried searching for cwm permanent for the tab but seem to not find a clear cut process to get a cwm recovery. Can anyone please point me in the right direction. My tab is currently running 2.2 foyo. I already know since the tab has different version and is available for many carriers, that roms are very different

If you have a gsm version, you can flash the overcome rom, it has cwm built in. Look at the overcome site or thread for instruction.
Yeah I just read through it.
So I can go ahead and load overcome via odin? Wheres stock 2.2 firmware just incase it soft bricks?
Its a gsm tab but I only use it over wifi
And should download jupiter nowipe or wipe version?

thank you very much, im downloading the stock safe v5 gingerbread from their site
what happens if i want to flash the cm7 testing rom or another rom in the forum? would cwm disappear?
or is it in essence perm. cwm even if i switch roms
so i followed instructions to the T and odin tool saying fail so i guess it has been bricked
im re-trying again
do i select re-partition?? because odin tool is doing nothing after retrying
have you checked your bootloader as tell in the tutorial ?
It fails at which step ? Is your bootloader locked or unlocked ? Did you put it in download mode ?
Thanks for the concerns, i ended up fixing the issue
Let it die and tested to see if it even charged when i connected it to power outlet. With stroke of luck, got it back to dl mode and now running overcome
If i flash a different rom will overcome kernel will still be on my tab? So i can keep cmw on it?
Sent from Galaxy Tab 7" W/ Overcome Rom
If you flash via cwm, you will still have cwm.
Cool thanks. So it will keep the kernel unless I flash a new one via odin
Ima try flash cm7 build via cwm

Beware not all zip files are flashable with cwm. If it's not specified, don't do it or you will brick your tab.

Hi,
I installed CWM recovery 5.0.2.6. after installing it i found out that installing a custom rom will void my warranty. I couldn't find the stock rom i had in my Galaxy Mini on Web. It is S5570XWKQ5.
Is there a way to uninstall CWM recovery without flashing another rom ? Can you please help me in detail because i am quite a noob in these matters.
Regards,
Please help
If it is not possible to uninstalll, can you please tell me how if it is possible to downgrade to Clockwork Mod Recovery v4.0.0.5. And how can i do that ? I am sorry about being urgent about this but i am really stucked.
To remove CWM you can delete /system/bin/hijack and /system/bin/logwrapper
Then rename /system/bin/logwrapper.bin to /system/bin/logwrapper.
At least this is how it was on froyo. will probably hold true for GB.
I guess had to say this, i haven't flashed or rooted my phone with a custom rom. My version is 2.3.4 and i couldn't find any hijack on /system/bin
I used ES Explorer to delete logwrapper.bin but couldn't manage to do it. I guess that is because it is not rooted so ES Explorer can't work as Root Explorer.

Just. flash your rom with original GB firmware using ODIN and then you will get stock recovery. If you know your rom details download one from sammobile.com and then falsh it using ODin.
I know that it is possible to get back the stock recovery by flashing it with my current rom.
But problem the problem is this my current rom does not exist online. It is the turkish rom and you can only find it by going to the technical service and paying a certain amount.
So i have to do this w/o getting installed a stock rom.

Then I guess you will have to do so OR, just stay with CWM recovery installed on your device.
I don't want to pay 30$ for just a single rom flashing.
Is it possible to backup my current rom and then flash a custom rom with cwm 5.0.2.6 without getting bricked.
Worst case scenerio if would have bricked the thing could i restore the backup i would have had or flash a custom rom.
Please help me yagya. I came to this point by not reading carefully your cwm installing guide.(noticed the 5.0.2.6 warning but it was too late) i am not blaming or anything just aiming your conscience.

So, you mean to tell you have CWM v5.0.2.6 and you want to get rid of it just because you saw a warning on my post.... If yes, then don't worry, CWM v5.0.2.6 works fine (at least for me). Try for yourself. But, since many other complained to me about flashing error with latest CWM I included the warning.
However, If it doesn't work OR if you want to go back to CWM v4.0.0.5, simply flash the CWM v4.0.0.5 from Odin using One package option. You will get CWM v4.0.0.5 on your device.
Also, downgrading to stock recovery if you are using custom rom is not recommended. Just flash older CWM recovery and everything will be fine. If you need any help follow the link on my signature.
I hope I understood your problem and it will help you. If I am wrong please correct me.

Hi,
I am new to Android Phones. I tried to root my Galaxy Note using the above method
2. Long, No raised couter OR Exclamation mark
-Downgrade to Rootable GB ROM and Root it. OR Download This pre rooted GB ROM and flash using PC Odin
-Wipe cache, data and delvic cache from recovery
-Install Mobile Odin Pro
-Copy ICS ROM file in .tar (you want to flash) to Internal SD card (recommended, but you can have it on EXT too)
-Download Odin (.tar) version of custom kernel like Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function. If newbies have confusion to select, here is one for example Notecore V12 std kernel. You can use this. But newer version can be found on link mentioned above.
-Open Mobile Odin Pro
-select open file
but i run mobile odin without downloading the odin version of custom kernel (I got confused, I thought I needed to do thisafter running mobile odin) and now my phone is stuck in flashing mode for about 45mins switching on and off.
What should I do?
Thank you in advance for your help...
Christina
Flash Pre rooted ROm again Wipe cache and data and repeat procedure, that will be safe.
It worked! Thank you!
Just a quick question...
I followed all the steps mentioned on the thread up to installing mobile odin and copying the ics rom....
but I am confused with the odin version of custom kernel...I am trying to find the correct cf-root kernel through the link you provided but I can not find the KJ1. I downloaded the one you have attached below mobile odin screenshots. Is that ok?
And also where do I copy the kernel? Internal or external sd? Should it be in a specific directory in order to be detected by mobile odin?
Sorry for all these questions but I looked around and there is no specific instructions anywhere about this part.
Thank you...
Which rom you want to flash?

Since I am new to the android platform phones, I think it will be better if i explained what my objective is so I won't confuse you too....
I want to be able to install and use rooted applications like titanium back up. I read that in order to do this I have to root my phone.
So what I want to do now is to root my phone in order to use ie titanium black without upping my flash counter.
Also I do not care to have a custom ICS, I prefer the stock one for now until I become more familiar with all these.
I followed the steps but the customn kernel things has confused me.
My phone is as mentioned before a galaxy note with ICS 4.04 before I started the procedure, now I have Gingerbread 2.35.
What should I do?
Thank you

Thank you for the quick reply!!!
Just to be sure, when you say first method you mean the one below
1. Short, easy - requires to reset counter
-Download Odin (.tar) version of custom kernel like Notecore, Speedmod, CF root kernel Or other any with same function. If newbies have confusion to select, here is one for example Notecore V12 std kernel. You can use this. But newer version can be found on link mentioned above.
-Flash it using PC odin for PDA tab.
-You will get exclamation mark and raised counter, which can be reset with Triangle Away
-First time opening triangle away application, it will ask to download file(flasher), let it complete. then choose to reset counter, it will restart in special recovery an finish job.\
If yes, then this brings us back - almost - to my original question....how do i use the custom kernel (cf or notecore) with odin? I know it uzips to a zimage etc but how do I use it which odin? Also which cf kernel -if iuse this one- is correct for my phone? Is there a link you can provide that explains all these?

My Tab already back to normal, Thanks :good:
Dear all, i cut the crap:
I did brick my samsung tablet 8.9"
Before I already had manage to upgrade my tab into ICS base on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893456 with "
[ROM][ICS][OFFICIAL][P7300] P7300ZSLP7 stock+rooted+voice calls" and upgrade the kernel into 1.8.2 based on A1
But some reason now i can't restart the tablet, I did manage to reinstall the CWM v5.xxx from ODIN because before i accidently installed the CWM with touch screen support (don't ask, my stupid mistake because downloading the CWM for the tab 2 for my father and installed it).
Now, my tab only showing samsung logo, but still capable to go to CWM v5.xx and recovery mode.
I did want to ask, is that possible to install CWM v6.xx based on kallt ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21194554&postcount=2 ) from ODIN? I did tried download the zip but the ODIN only recognized tar files, so i tried two ways: extract and repackaged it (failed) and trying to converse it (also failed).
Anyone can tutor me how to install CWM based on kallt from ODIN? Maybe after that, my proble solve.. Thanx
You're not hard bricked, if you were you couldn't get the logo. I'm assuming you can get into down load mode and Odin recognizes the tab. Flash the stock Rom with Odin. You can find the Rom at sammobile.com

Took me almost two days to figure this out, cannot post in development forum, so here it is:
Problem:
"old rooting files" are not working with newer ICS stock rom, tried with all the here for Tab 8.9 existing guides.
Solution:
Took the root file from the (almost similar) Tab 10.1 for ICS from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807219 which has a link to this file:
http://www.shabbypenguin.com/users/...alaxytab10.1/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip
Installed it with cwm recovery 5.5.0.8 (install zip file from sdcard)
and it finally worked on the 8.9 running 4.0.4 ics stock (UK/European Version)!
Combined with the a1 1.7.3 overclocking kernel, the tab now works like a charm
overclocked with app "voltage control" to 1400 Mhz.
edit: this is for model p7300/p7310 (tegra 2 versions) only
Thanks for your efforts.

I've used ClockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar with samsung_galaxy_tab_10.1_root.zip file.
this is on P7310 with ICS 4.0.4

Perhaps you should use another root tool. I used a busybox.zip-file.. Just flash it the same way; via CWM (install zip from sd-card)
The file is in the attachments
And if this doesn't work either, you might wanna update your CWM version first, before you flash the root tool. I have it attached as well. Updating CMW is done the same way as flashing a root tool, so: launch CMW 5 and install the CMW6.0.0.8.zip from sd-card.
Here you go!
do we need to have kies installed to flash odin or not?

No. Just the Samsung drivers which kies will install. Then forget about kies. It's a pos. And you don't flash odin. It resides on your PC. You flash with odin.

Are these for P7300 with 4.0.4?
is there anyone with p7310 tegra 2 successly rooted with method above? Please share information and step thx
You can try with Superoneclick2.3.3 - should work fine.
Or you can install CWM first with Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312218
And then copy root.original.zip over to
SD-card. Turn off device. Go into recovery mode with power on+volume down (don't choose download mode)
and flash root.original there.
are you sure superoneclick are proven to work? Because a failed root attempt using superoneclick usually make tablet slow and need to hard reset
Have no idea. If in doubt flash cwm with odin and then root.

Is this working ? Is there another way to root SGH i957 running ICS ?
Thank you
Hi guys, I am looking for some help with this. I have tried the superoneclick way and the program hangs and does not complete. I have also tried the other way, using the odin flashable CWM 5.5.0.4, but when I install it and boot into recovery, the option screen scrools so fast that I cannot see what I am selecting in order to load the root file.
Can anyone tell me if this is a known issue with this version of CWM? Does anyone know of another odin flashable version of CWM that I could try?
Thanks in advance!

Hey, its a P7310 running stock UK ICS firmware. I double checked the setup and it turns out I was using a different version of ODIN (3.07), so maybe that is the reason?

Maybe it's odin. I've always used 1.85 but others have had luck with ver 3. Try to reflash cwm with 1.85. And make sure cwm is for the p7310. To root I've always flashed super su-busy box thru recovery.
