[Q] Box app opens APK files by default - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Since installing the Box app for the free 50GB I found that it opens APK files by default, and I have to a file explorer to manually find them and install.
It doesn't seem like Box has any defaults set, but it still opens files it has nothing to do with.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

oh. ha, sorry. Im running CM 6.1. I use clockworkmod recovery. it was doing fine until i installed the new marketplace.
If you're downloading from a site, like getjar.com or something, make sure you have "Install from Unknown Sources" allowed. I use Astro file manager to install them afterwards. You might want to try that one.
I've tried a bunch, and found the one I chose seems to do so much
But no matter, if you haven't already go through your command prompt and type su to gibe super user access to do its thong

Quick question, did you install the .apk after you downloaded it?
No, it didn't let me. But I can still see and use the new marketplace. It's just when I try to install an .apk from the browser. It says the whole "no application can be found to open this file." But when i go through Astro, it lets me install the apps there. It's like the package installer isn't being recognized or something in the browser...
And now it tries to open the apk with Gameboid. :/

Turn "allow installation of non-market applications" on, then try it again. It's in your settings menu under application settings. Let me know how it goes
I tried it, still nothing. :/

What are you using to try to install the apk?

Don't install things from the browser then. Its not the new market that's causing the problem. What browser are you using?
Dolphin HD. I've tried that one, opera, and some the stock one and still nothing. But ya, it'll still let me get them from Astro. Thanx though. =]]

Just download ES File explorer and install from there. Browser is definitely not the best route for installing .apk's.

Use a file manager like Root explorer. It is a paid app but really great. There are some free ones as well like Astro but I personally don't like how the UI looks.
You can download them to your SD card and install with Astro (free). Browse your SD card with Astro, click on the file and it asks you to either browse or install.
Thanks I meant if you can download the file not install them. I assume that its just not possible and you have to use your computer then.

Does anyone have any input on this? When I browse the forums on my phone and click on an apk, I get an "Unknown - Cannot download. The content is not supported on the phone" message.
Are there any possibilities installing an apk using only the phone?

Download Astro File Manager. Open it up and then use the menu button and go to Preferences. At the bottom of the list you'll see "Enable Browser Downloads". Tick that box and now you can download files in your phone's browser.
Don't uninstall astro, or you won't be able to dl anymore.
I just used Dropbox. Files go in on my PC, and are available on my phone with the Dropbox app.
DB offers 2GB storage for free and, so far, it's worked from all my PC's and works well with my phone. I just open the .apk and install.
umm... same way you download on a computer...
google.com search > "" Some Dumb app pro v9.9 .apk download ""
download. install. duh
use google to rip off google...

Thanks. I had tried with explorer, which is the free version of root explorer, but it didn't work. I'll try astro.

There's an app on the market called "Download All Files ". It has allowed me to download several different files that I was not able to before. Downloaded files get put into a folder called "download" on the sd card. Use your file explorer, you can install .apks from there.

[Q] Manualnooter 4.5 App problem

I've got my nook color rooted with ManualNooter 4.5.18 but I'm not sure where to put the apk files. Do they go on the SD card and if so in which folder or just on the card. I also need to know how I then install or access them. Thanks
I just place the APKs in a folder called backup apps on the SC card, I don't think it matters much.
For some apps I did have to copy the APK to internal in the Nook, I just used a folder in the my files folder.
The important thing is that you can find the files once they are copied.
I use ES File Explorer to navigate to my APKs and install them. It's free from the market. As for where to put any APKs that you want to load manually, anywhere that makes sense to you should be fine. I have a folder on the SD card called "downloads" that I stick everything into.
When I use that program it says install blocked, and my phone is set to block installation. Any way around this?

I have the button in nookColor Tools checked. Is there another??

[Q] I can't install Amazon app store

I just rooted again after boot looping. 1.3 and using Manual Nooter per instructions in that thread, fixed permissions in RM, USB debugging is checked. I'm up and running just fine, however I can't install Amazon App Store. I click on the .apk in the downloads of my browser and I get two choices to use, " App Installer", and "Package Installer". I try App Installer and I get "The application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "UnArchive" the application to try again. How do I "Archive" and then UrArchive" the application?
I try Package Installer and I get "There is a problem parsing the package".
I've reset and rooted numerous times because of boot loops issue, which I'm pretty sure I've solved, but every previous time I was able to install Amazon App Store.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Well I am not an expert by any means but it sort of sounds like a bad file have you tried deleting it and re-DLing it? You can DL it right onto the nook via email for example, Amazon will email you the link. If it's any problem other than that then it's way out of my league. Hope that works!
I've downloaded the .apk numerous times with stock browser and Opera Mini, and tried downloading it from the email amazon sent me with the download link. Same issues with all attempts.
Have you tried opening it with a file browser like Astro? Also try downloading the apk to your PC and then copy it to your Nook via USB, the Download on your Nook could be getting screwed up.
Also if you have ADB setup you can try running the command "adb install [insert apk filename here]" to try to install the Amazon Store.

Did you check the "Unknown Sources" box in Settings -> Applications?
I don't mean to be condescending, but you didn't mention it in the OP.
yes, unknown sources is checked. I figured out how to fix problem. I moved .apk's to system/app using Root Explorer and using Package Installer, they installed just fine.

I paid for it. There may some other file managers that you can use, but I just dropped the dough for Root Explorer.

For what it does it is cheap for $4. We need to pay for apps or else developers will quit building them.

Unless I am mistaken this does nearly everything Root Explorer does. At least I think I've heard that before. Having paid for and more importantly become familiar with Root Explorer, I have't actually tried it. But I do know it comes HIGHLY recommended.

Please Help - This doesn't solve my problem
Just rooted 1.3 again with both manual nooters. Everything is working fine now but I want to download Amazon App Store from The web.
It downloads fine but wont install - gives me a "your phone is protected" warning box saying that I should go to Settngs/Application and check the box to allow for outside downloads.
I DON'T HAVE AN APPLICATIONS OPTION UNDER SETTINGS. I had one when I was running cm7 - but not for a simple 1.3 manual nooter.
I have looked everywhere I can think of - can anyone help or have a work-around?

you can install your APK files (like the Play Store) by going to the Amazon Market first and downloading a File Explorer App such as ES File Explorer or any type of File Manager app, locating the APK through that program, and then clicking on it to install
