Hi guys, I haven't flashed in while, so might as well be completely starting over in remembering how.
Have a captivate running Cognition 2.3b8 and I'd like to get some gingerbread goodness on there. Most guides say to flash back to stock using Odin, then a Gingerbread kernel, then the Gingerbread ROM, but the Apex installation suggests I can use something called "Heimdall" (which is completely new to me). Do I still need to flash back to stock or is this Heimdall thing an all in one type of thing?
Heimdall is an open source alternative to the closed source Odin.

Thanks! Your signature info ended up coming in handy.
I ended up using Odin to flash (for some reason, I couldn't get Heimdall to work). First, tried to use Heimdall, but ended up soft bricking the phone, and luckily found some instructions to get back to download mode from the "phone-exclamation point-computer" screen. I ended up putting Mosaic 9 on my Captivate using the instructions from MobileTechVideos.
Loving it!

I rooted and flashed to the Cognition ROM. I want to go back to stock and so I can get the Samsung over the air updates (2.2) when it comes out.
How can I do this? I tried the Odin one click unroot and when back to the stock software via Clockworky recovery/Rom manager....
Software updates fail though when the captivate restarts....
Nevermind I get ya now. The stock rom Odin one click isn't supposed to be flashed through clockwork. You need to read more.
PS, Questions belong in Q & A section.
Search for odin3 one-click downloader by designgears. I never worry about unrooting it. Odin does it for me.
Btw, Wrong section. Should be in q&a

There may be something comparable, but the odin for the Captivate only has the Captivate software.

I have found lots of info on returning a Captivate back to stock with the Odin program but I believe a PC is needed. Is there any way to do this on my Macbook without Windows? I flashed my first ROM a couple weeks ago and would like to try some others. Thanks for any help you can give.
reflash stock help
hey im having the same problem actually i flashed a cyanogen 6.1 beta and my sd card is not showing mounted in recovery so i need to know how to flash back to stock using a mac
You should be fine just flashing to another rom but heimdall is what you need for flashing stock using a mac.

Thanks. I will try flashing over the old ROM but I will also look into Heimdall.
Heimdall or bootcamp your Mac and run windows on it (run both OS, select one on start up)
Any success? I was lost when I went to heimdall. Since I couldn't go back to stock after initial root + rom, I've been able to successfully keep flashing different ROMs.

Heimdall seems very confusing to me and, unfortunately at this time, there seem to be no instructions on how to use it. If anyone finds step by step instructions on how to use it to flash back to stock, please post a link or the instructions. I have it installed but don't know how to do much with it besides brick a phone.
Look over in the i9000 forum for instructions on using heimdall. I don't use it but I saw a thread with a lot of detailed instructions there.
edit...here is the thread: Heimdall Guide
Thanks newt!

Odin flash any Odin file from your phone!
The XDA god chainfire put this app together, and I helped him add the Captivate to the list of supported devices yesterday!
flash a whole, or part of: .tar, .tar.md5, modem, even flash the files from inside a ONE CLICK odin, FROM YOUR PHONE!
[28.11.2011] Mobile ODIN v1.20 [ROOT]
bump.......
No heimdall? Heh j/k sounds awesome. Great work guys.

No, you'll still need to use a computer-based Odin/Heimdall to flash bootloaders.
(That's what the IBL/PBL items are that are greyed out in the application.)

My captivate just got infinitely better
well i have tried this it's flashing to jf6 using cezar flash like a breeze but problem flashing to jf6 the market cant find the mobile odin. and even you dl it on sd card it wont let you install on jf6 stock so i have tried installing the stock leak of kk4 while i was on a i9000 base rom now if you purchase this on market it allows you to automaticaly download the kernel needed to flash now problem here is if your build prop is not tweak to samsung-sgh-i897 build prop it will download the i9000 base kernel which will mess up your flashing and end up on a bootloop going to stock kk4 so still kinda fresh its a go and miss some times it work sometimes end a bootloop this also it does not flash the bootloader from the stock rom so i suggest before you go to stock gb rom flash a captivate base gb loader but got to admit chainfire is really a beast to make an odin on a phone so purchase the app to support him
Can this tool flash .bin file?
please use periods. and sentences. PLEASE.
it is so hard to read a runon sentence like that.
and the proper place to post issues with the app is in the thread where you got it.

wait...
WTF am I doing???
GO READ THE FRIGGIN THREAD!
Good work Devs
Do you have a direct link or mirror for v1.20? Tried the version on the market and still getting not compatible.
link in the first post, links to his thread, and it has links to the app. also I think it checks compatibility by reading the build.prop, what's wrong are you running and have you messed with your build.prop
Running MIUI. No, not edited build.prop.
well miui is probably the answer, might want to let the Dev know so he can fix that, if possible.
Ok, will do. Thanks
Not compatible with teamhacksung ICS build 6 either.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
team hacksung's ICS port uses the CM7 partitioning table, and Mobile odin doesnt support re-partitioning. so ya. of course it dont and wont ever work.
Hello, I'm trying to root my samsung captivate. I originally flashed 2.3.5 using Odin a couple weeks before the official update came out. I remember seeing reinstall packages appear in the recovery screen before then but now its gone, completely vanished and I am left with the inability to root my phone. Can anyone help me?
Download 7.0A corn kernel (Odin version, not cwm) found on the development section. Flash it using Odin under PDA slot. Then use three button combo to go recovery and install root from there.
If you don't like corn kernel, search for fugu root and follow the OP instructions.

^ Agreed
and fyi to the OP...search before u start a new thread, because this very subject has been threaded a bunch to say the least.
Thanks, I will give that a try in hopes that it works. NExt time I will make sure to post in pre-existing threads!
ok, I think im retarded because I cant find the kernel d/l. Do either of you have a link to where I can d/l it?
Here ya go

Thank you so much, <3 you guys!
Some background: been running Doc's ics rom with icy glitch kernel for about a week. People complained that they could barely hear me, so I researched the kernel and discovered that icy glitch is only for cm based roms. Because I've never flashed any cm rom, I knew that icy glitch was the culprit. So, I flashed corn kernel, and bootloop ensued. After trying 3 or 4 corn kernel versions (including 6.03 and 7.0a), i decided to do a master clear. However, i no longer have Recovery mode, by this i mean, the screen is blank when I boot into it. I got download mode, but no Recovery mode. Also, Odin freezes when I attempt any one-click package, even the master clear. The Gingerbread one-click package freezes on "Do not turn off target" and the Master clear package freezes on "Starting master clear . . .".
I have been researching XDA and Google and reading threads since 6:00 last night, went to bed at 11:00, and have been at it since 7:30 this morning. I have verified that my USB cord and laptop ports are working fine, and even downloaded updated samsung USB drivers. Please, please help.
first thing, docs ICS rom is compatible with all cm kernels. The voice problem you were having was with the modem. The rom comes with kk4 modem and you need a i9000 modem. Are you in download mode when trying Odin?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
Yes, I'm in download mode in Odin. But, one question: The Captivate is I897, not I9000, and I've always read that you don't mix I897 and I9000 stuff. So, if Doc's ics rom is I9000 based then 1, why would it be in the Captivate section and not I9000 section, and 2, shouldn't his ics rom have come with a I9000 modem built in if it is for the I897?
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? All I want to do at this point is put my phone back to factory state.
The reason you are GT-i9000 ROMs on the Captivate section is because they have been ported to work on the Captivate. However, you flashed a kernel (Corn) designed to work on native Captivate ROMs (e.g. Legend, Simply Stock) a opposed to GT-i 9000 ports. This most likely happened because your did not take the time to read all the stickies posted on the General, Q&A our Development sections. I suggest you 1) Flash one of the One-Clicks available in.....a sticky on the Development section, preferably one with CWM already included (try KI2). 2) Read TRusello's thread on how to flash a ROM, which is....you guessed it, a sticky. That way if you want to remain stock, your can at least to the final build, which is KK4 3) Read the remaining stickies, that way when you decide to move on to ICS, you know what steps to take.
Good luck.

Kafepuya, the one-click total stock worked. But, as far as readng the stickies, I mean, this stuff can be confusing. I've been reading and learning and flashing for a year, and you think you know all the steps, but then you forget one little detail, and WHAM! Fercked up, just like that. But you're right, I will re-read right before I flash anything in the future. Thank you for your help by the way, got my phone back

As you go along, things will start making more sense. That being said, I highly suggest you familiarize yourself with TRusello's sticky thread on flashing a custom ROM. It's in the Q&A section.
