[Q] Flashing back to stock on a Mac - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have found lots of info on returning a Captivate back to stock with the Odin program but I believe a PC is needed. Is there any way to do this on my Macbook without Windows? I flashed my first ROM a couple weeks ago and would like to try some others. Thanks for any help you can give.

reflash stock help
hey im having the same problem actually i flashed a cyanogen 6.1 beta and my sd card is not showing mounted in recovery so i need to know how to flash back to stock using a mac

You should be fine just flashing to another rom but heimdall is what you need for flashing stock using a mac.

Thanks. I will try flashing over the old ROM but I will also look into Heimdall.

Heimdall or bootcamp your Mac and run windows on it (run both OS, select one on start up)

Any success? I was lost when I went to heimdall. Since I couldn't go back to stock after initial root + rom, I've been able to successfully keep flashing different ROMs.

Heimdall seems very confusing to me and, unfortunately at this time, there seem to be no instructions on how to use it. If anyone finds step by step instructions on how to use it to flash back to stock, please post a link or the instructions. I have it installed but don't know how to do much with it besides brick a phone.

Look over in the i9000 forum for instructions on using heimdall. I don't use it but I saw a thread with a lot of detailed instructions there.
edit...here is the thread: Heimdall Guide

Thanks newt!

[Q] Flashing using Odin and not rooted

Hello, I have followed the processes HERE to install Froyo 2.2 onto my phone and everything worked correctly and I have went back to the [STOCK ROM] doing a master clear and using the same process but that isnt the complete stock ROM I had to use Kies to fix the problems I was having. Ok, my question is I don't want to root my phone I just want to follow the process like did with using Odin it was so simple I just run that program and wala I have a new look.... What other roms can I use in the same way that I dont have to root my phone? Like the Cognition do I have to root or is there a better ROM than the froyo one I used in the first link above.
Thanks,
Chad
I personally don't root my phone in between flashes however must people do.I just flash a clockwork zip. To answer your question no none of the roms I know out there are available as a simple odin one click.

crystalhand, thanks for the reply. Im new to this and not sure exactly what the clockwork zip is. If you followed the first link the Odin to my understanding is a ROM installer and I did install a Froyo 2.2 stock ROM thew Odin im guessing. I just wanted to know if there is another version or something else that works in a similar way without rooting your phone.
Thanks,
Chad
Can someone tell me what I have to do in the easiest way to get a new ROM on my phone without rooting?
There are a couple different methods to flashing. As stated above, you can flash the clockwork recovery. Once booted into that, you can install the zip file that is your rom of choice. The recommended and less problematic method is to root your phone, flash back to stock with master clear, reroot, clockwork mod, and then finally install rom of choice. People are always trying to look for the easier ways out. Well keep in mind, taking shortcuts tends to cause you problems, and in the end, you end up spending more time trying to troubleshoot probelms than it would if u just did it the right way..

[q] need serious help. Phone bricked :(

Hi everyone,
I own a captivate-i896 (rogers)
I have run into a very serious trouble
I tried to odin back to stock and now I am experiencing this problem. I get the following message:
update media. please wait
E:Can't mount /dev/block/st110
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata:media:Can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed.
PLEASE HELP.
I tried delete all user data. reinstall packages. delete cache. EVERYTHING.
I even trying flashing again 3 times. No luck.
Can someone please help?
First thing is your phone isn't bricked if it still has power and you can see things on it. Second, what were you doing with Odin when it was flashing? Was it the full Odin or a one click version? Are you making sure you flash the proper firmware? What did you have on your phone before you tried going back to stock? Lots more detail is helpful because your phone works...just not like it should. Again its no brick and searching the forums will help with your issue.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.

You had a lagfix installed that you did not disable before you reflashed. Your internal partition is still on ext4 but the data is on efs. This is not a problem. You need the one-click version of odin. Search the threads for it and instructions on flashing. You will have the att boot logo but there are ways to work around it, but first do the one click.

I thought Lagfix didn't need to be disabled if you were flashing to stock, just going from ROM to ROM. Besides that, I don't feel comfortable running 1-click for any reason as it bricked my first phone, just trying to flash.
What ROM were you running when you encountered this problem?
Stock, with a SpeedMod kernel. I wanted to go back to a stock kernel with voodoo. Trust me on this one, one-click will restore you to 2.1 if you follow the instructions.
See this thread:

The reason you have to disable the lagfix is because with a new ROM you are likely flashing an integrated kernel with a lagfix. Some are Captivate-based, some are i9000-based. Additionally, some use Supercurio's Voodoo Lagfix, some use Hardcore's SpeedMod. One or more of these elements might be incompatible going from one configuration to the new flash config. Without knowing more about what you had before and what you wanted to flash, this is the best explanation I can give.
If you are irked by the AT&T boot screen, I am also partial the this fellow's package, which I have used and works well. Read and make sure you have the Rogers version.

It has nothing to do with following the instructions - It has to do with the Batch version of the phone - 1010 and 1012 batch numbers do NOT play well with 1-click.

I'm well aware of that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11649620&postcount=5
What you might not be aware of is that Rogers Captivates are not prone to these failures as they are different build numbers. This is a fellow Rogers customer. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that his build is 10.11.
Thanks everyone for all the responses.
Actually I had doc's rom installed on my phone and I believe I had the hardcore speedmod kernel OR the glitterball's kernel on my fone and also had the lagfix.
I was actually in process of flashing the cyanogen 7 gingerbread when this happened. I forgot to copy the actual flash file(that i was supposed to instal from speedmod kernel recovery) and so i just decided to odin back to stock and start the process all over again. But after doing that my phone never went past the rogers splash screen.
I use the ODIN 1 click software where u just load the PDA and PIT files and flash the fone. I have tried Odin back to stock for Rogers eclair 2.1 and froyo 2.2 without any luck. I also tried the at&t 1 click odin flash back to stock without any luck.
The best I was able to do was to reach the rogers splash screen and then the screen turned black and thats it.
I flashed many different kernels but nothing happened.
I even downloaded the giorgio armani firmware for the captivate and flashed that which got rid of the mounting error in the 2e recovery screen but after the splash screen, the phone just kept vibrating and nothing happened.
I have tried everything you guys asked me too.
Also, after flashing the I9010 rom(giorgio armani), my download mode 3 button combo changed. First, I used vol up and down plus USB to get into download mode but now its changed to vol down + power. This one is not a big deal as i can still get into download mode. But I am telling you all just to help.
I also read somewhere that we cannot repartition and flash using odin 1 click if we have a lagfix kernel installed. I might have done that too that might have caused the problem.
Someone here mentioned that the file system is changed from ext4 to efs or something like that. I don't know what the real problem is.
Please help

My build is 10.10
but I never had a problem with flashing with 1-click ODIN to stock before.
I have tried both AT&T and rogers versions through 1-click odin.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Stuck with a farmated phone

Hi Guys
Maybe the answer on this question is easy for you guys, but I have searched a lot and can't find the answer.
My problem.
I have had a custom rom on my phone for a half year.
Then I wanted to install a stock rom, so I rebooted to recovery and formatted it all.
Then did I find a custom rom, and tried to download it with Odin.
First stock rom stopped in the middel of the installation.
Then I tried another version, it did not help either. I did finish the installation, but screwed up my bootloader.
Is have installed a new bootloader again and think it works again.
Then did I read in a thread that it's important that I now which rom version my phone is running. (JPY JPO ect.)
How can I find out which stock rom belongs to my phone, when I only have download mode and recovery.
I also tried to install Darkys rom, but realised i didn't knew how to push the file into the sd card in download mode.
Can anyone help me with this problem.
I really don't now how to get my phone up and running again.
Thanks in advance

You don't need to place the Darky's ROM on the SD card. Just put your phone into download mode and use Odin as instructed in Darky's thread. You install the ROM from your PC.
And in future, you may want to do a little more research into how to use odin to handle problems before you flash something new...it will save you a lot of stress.

Next time I will be more carefull.
I just tried to install another stock rom, and this did also screw up me bootloader.
It's the same error as in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984140
Do anyone know why ?
I'm sorry, but I can't find the thread which are describing how to install with odin.
Only how to install with Darky app, which have to be installed on a working rom.

I did and it's okay.
But I still don't know how to install a stock rom on my phone, without getting a error.
Now i have tried several stock roms and after installing I still get the same error as on the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984140
Why is this not working for me?
I'm going for getting a stock rom on the phone. Darkys was only an emergency, if I can't make the stock installation to work.
Did rom files downloaded properly? And theres issue that flasging often fails while using odin 1.7 and 64bit windows 7 (and maybe other 64x).

Thanks for the try

Great... Now the reason you had the issue like the thread (which was likely answered in the thread) was that a file, likely dbdata.rfs was not on the package and you repartitioned it. So that partition never gets created and then can't be mounted.

[Q] Odin Flash Still Necessary with Heimdall?

Hi guys, I haven't flashed in while, so might as well be completely starting over in remembering how.
Have a captivate running Cognition 2.3b8 and I'd like to get some gingerbread goodness on there. Most guides say to flash back to stock using Odin, then a Gingerbread kernel, then the Gingerbread ROM, but the Apex installation suggests I can use something called "Heimdall" (which is completely new to me). Do I still need to flash back to stock or is this Heimdall thing an all in one type of thing?
Heimdall is an open source alternative to the closed source Odin.

Thanks! Your signature info ended up coming in handy.
I ended up using Odin to flash (for some reason, I couldn't get Heimdall to work). First, tried to use Heimdall, but ended up soft bricking the phone, and luckily found some instructions to get back to download mode from the "phone-exclamation point-computer" screen. I ended up putting Mosaic 9 on my Captivate using the instructions from MobileTechVideos.
Loving it!

[Q] [i9000] Attempted to root froyo using heimdall, stuck in d/l mode

Hi guys,
Sorry if this has already been solved, I've been reading and attempting fixes for a day now with no success.
My i9000 is on froyo. I am running Ubuntu 12.10 so obviously my options to use odin are limited.
My goal is to root it and upgrade to Jelly Bean.
After much reading (not enough?) I decided to give heimdall a shot using this TUT
and info gathered from here amongst other places.
I managed to finally get my device to show in Heimdall. I then flashed it. I think using files found in either of those places.
Now I have a semi-bricked Galaxy S which I can get it into Download mode.
This morning I grabbed my GF's Windows Netbook and installed Kies and Odin hoping to follow a more orthodox route to getting this phone to a functional state.
Kies hangs at connecting. Odin recognized the phone though it FAILED anytime I tried flashing it with stock firmware.
I can provide error messages if you need them.
At present I must restore firmware back to stock -> then root stock firmware -> then upgrade to Jelly Bean is that correct?
If it is can anyone point me in the right direction to restoring the stock firmware?
The best thing for you to do would be to search this forum for the update and root tutorial for the 2.3.6 value pack then flash 4.2.2 there should be tutorials for heimdal and Odin
