A Complete N0oBs Guide
I cant make this any simpler for you.
TO HAVE A CLEAN ROM = JUST FLASH THE ZIP
TO USE YOUR OWN LIST PUT ROMCleaner_User.txt ON YOUR SDCARD IN
Code:
/sdcard/ROMCleaner
Click to collapse
Quick Start Guide
Ok, this is a quick start guide for those user who just want to flash and go.
The cleaner uses one of two text files located in the ROMCleaner folder on your SD card.
ROMCleaner.txt - This is the default cleaner list that the script will read from. This list will be placed on your card on the first run of the cleaner. It will be overwritten each time the cleaner is run to ensure the latest updates are applied.
Or
ROMCleaner_User.txt - This is your custom cleaner list. You can create this file at any time and the cleaner will automatically read from it.
File Locations:
Code:
/sdcard/ROMCleaner/ROMCleaner.txt <--- This is the default list and will be created automatically
/sdcard/ROMCleaner/ROMCleaner_User.txt <--- This is your personal list which you create.
Click to collapse
Summary
In short, all you have to do is add text to a file and put apks into a folder.
Yes yes that simple.
You can even edit the text files and copy apks using just your device.
While we still recommend you use http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ to edit your list on a PC to maintain the UNIX encoding the cleaner will also double check and convert the file if it finds it has been converted to a windows format.
Click to collapse
EVERYTHING BELOW THIS RED LINE YOU DONT NEED TO KNOW.
ITS A COMPLETE REFERENCE GUIDE FOR THE ENTIRE TOOLSET
_______________________________________________ <- The Red Line
Simple Breakdown
Folder Creator - Creates all nesercery folders automatically for you on SDCard
ROMCleaner - Will clean your rom using either default list or user list
Backup Tool - Will backup all your apps to SD for you
SettingsRestorer - Restores backups made with backup Tool
HTCSetupRemover - Removes setup wizards
Mods & App Installer - Installs using the SecondBoot folders
Click to collapse
Folder Creator
Click to collapse
We have created this small flashable zip to aid you in getting the cleaners directory structure setup.
It should only need to be run once before using but can be run at any time to completely recreate the structure. Any files or folders in place will not be harmed if flashing again.
The script contains a small reboot to workround a very small bug in some recoveries. This bug will not update the sdcards file view to show new folders.
This is to help us avoid the obligatory "I flashed the zip but it didnt create the folders" posts.
ROMCleaner
Click to collapse
On flashing, the RC zip will do the following things:
Install our script and related files to /tmp
Check if the folder is present on the SD card, if not then it will create it.
Install the default cleaner list (ROMCleaner.txt) overwriting any older versions.
Check to see if a custom list is present (ROMCleaner_User.txt).
If it is then it will check for Windows encoding and convert to UNIX if needed.
If it is not then it will use the default.
Proceed to read the list and delete all the files and folders.
Copy any backuped up apps back to /data/app
Create Logs on the SD Card.
Note that the time it takes for the apps to be copied will vary dependent on the number of apps you have installed/are installing as will the first boot of the rom as most roms these days will automatically zipalign the data partition. On 200+ apps it takes under a minute to install and adds roughly 4-6mins to your boot time.
Due to the naming convention of apks when updated (they are appended with -1, -2 etc) please ensure you check for duplicates to avoid doubling up and wasting space. We will leave the organisation of your apps in this folder to you
Backup Tool
Click to collapse
Now to save time and bandwidth when installing a rom it is possible to have your apps 'pre-installed' before first boot.
On flashing, the zip will copy all apks located in
Code:
data/app
to
Code:
sdcard/ROMCleaner/FirstBoot/data/app
as well as several system files to your SD card in preperation for your new rom.
When the ROMCleaner is run it will copy these apks back to data/app for you before booting the rom.
We are slowly adding support for apps that are provided by the rom devs to make sure that these apps are not copied across to ensure you will always receive the uptodate version included with your rom.
If you feel support for your rom should be included as default please contact us in the thread.
When flashed this zip will do the following:
Install our script and related files to /tmp
Check if the folder is present on the SD card, if not then it will create it.
Backup WiFi APs keys, Bluetooth pairings and Mail accounts (including Inbox)
Copy all apks found in /data/app/
Create Logs on the SD Card.
Wifi, BT and Mail accounts can only be restored using the Settings Restorer.
Settings Restorer
Click to collapse
This script will attempt to restore any files backed up by the backup tool.
These settings are stored by the Android system and are usually lost when flashing a rom. This can be annoying if you have a lot of wifi passwords sotred or a few BT pairings which you dont want to lose.
It is important to note that in the majority of cases these settings will be correctly applied but sometimes for an unknown reason they dont and may cause errors. We are still trying to track these down. If you do encounter them PLEASE post in the thread so we can gather some information from you to aid in this process.
This tool also has limitations when it comes to moving rom base. Please do not attempt to restore these settings as it will more than likely cause errors.
HTCSetupRemover
Click to collapse
The setup remover is a small additional zip that will remove the setup wizards which run at first boot.
Once these wizards have been run they become absolutely useless and as such can be removed safely.
Unfortunately they are tied into several aspects of the system and removing them before the roms first boot can cause some weird errors and FC's
Creating Your Own List
Click to collapse
While the default list should be enough for most users, we have included the ability to define your own custom list for the cleaner to remove.
Creating your own list is as simple as adding files to a text file! This can be done a variety of ways, from an editor on your PC or via an editor on your Phone!
The easiest way to start your own list is to use the one attached to the first post.
Run the folder creator or create the following structure on you sdcard
Code:
/sdcard/ROMCleaner/ROMCleaner_User.txt
As long as this file is present, the cleaner will read from it instead of the default ROMCleaner.txt.
To add to it all you have to do is add the apk file or folder you would like removed during cleaning.
Single apk files should just be listed while folders should be encased in quotes (" ")
Any item with a # in front of it will be ignored by the cleaner.
The cleaner will check BOTH the /system and /data partitions for any apk file named in the list and remove it if it finds it
Examples:
To add files:
Code:
UselessApp.apk
Simple as that
To add folders:
Code:
"/system/app/UselessFolder"
Ignored example:
Here, both the empty folder and UselessApp2 will be deleted while UselessApp1 will be ignored.
Code:
"/system/app/EmptyFolder"
#UselessApp1.apk
UselessApp2.apk
We have also included the ability to batch delete a certain filetype by using the following syntax -
Code:
"/path/to/folder/*.fileextension"
Heres an example from the default list to remove all .png images from the resources folder:
Code:
"/system/customize/resource/*.png"
The default ROMCleaner.txt also includes these instructions to help you start your own list.
Examples Of Usage
Click to collapse
Heres a couple of example flashing procedures for the most common ways of flashing a rom and using the ROMCleaner toolset.
Before doing anything you should first flash the folder creator zip to create the folder structure for you.
Flash'n'Go - Full Wipe - Clean System
So this is your typical flashing procedure for a ROM starting with a full wipe, clean system, and no apps or settings backed up.
SuperWipe
Flash ROM
Flash ROMCleaner
First Boot
Setup Phone
Flash HTCSetupRemover
Use Phone as Normal
ROM Upgrade
Obviously using the 'upgrade' method to install a rom will replace any files you have removed with the cleaner the first time round.
You can use the cleaner again straight after flashing a rom upgrade.
Be warned, using the upgrade method and cleaner will no doubt leave artifacts and residue from the previous install. Most notably within the 'Add Widget' section of Rosie.
The only way to remove these artifacts is to clear data from HTC Sense
Code:
Settings > Applications > All > HTC Sense > Clear Data
WARNING - THIS WILL RESET YOUR HOMESCREEN LAYOUTS
This is not our fault. This is the design by HTC. Please do not complain to us, we hate it too.
We have added the ability to clear this data automatically while flashing to save you this trouble but have # it out by default to avoid all the whining posts blaming us about why peoples homescreens have been reset.
We highly recommend you use a custom list if you are performing upgrades and un# the appropriately marked section found in the default ROMCleaner.txt
This would be your ideal flashing method when using the cleaner on a rom upgrade.
Flash ROM
Flash ROMCleaner using custom list with Sense data cleared
Boot
Setup Phone
Flash HTCSetupRemover
Use Phone as Normal
Patric, craack and I do not officially endorse the use of rom upgrades and as such will not be hold accountable for any problems that arise from them.
With the use of this cleaner script and the backup/install apps option alongside other data backup tools such as Titanium backup (Data only) should negate the need to use the upgrade method.
Full Backup & Restore
This is the daddy. A full on backup of apps, wifi, bt and mail settings, wipe and reinstall of a cleaned rom.
This is usefull when you have been playing around too much and fooked somethig up but dont have a nandroid or just want the feeling of a freshly installed rom but dont want to lose some settings.

ROMCleaner Logs & Support

To make troubleshooting easier for us we have included a logging feature into the toolset to aid in trouble shooting.
Each script will create its own set of logs which will be stored in /sdcard/ROMCleaner/Logs
If you should run into problems, please attach these logs to your post in the thread to aid us in solving your issue.
Mods & App Installer
!!! WARNING - ADVANCED USERS ONLY !!!
Click to collapse
This tool has so far been successful in our tests and has been taken out of the experimental phase. Please note though the majority of mods we have tried have worked perfectly but some have caused bolops and black screens, usually heavy system apks such as framework-res and com.htc.resources.
For that reason it is for those users that know how to handle mod zips and understand the structure within them and can easily revert any changes made.
This script functions in a simialr way to the backup and installation of apps except it is used for mods which need to be flashed after the phone has had its first boot.
Such mods ,if flashed before the system has booted, have been know to cause errors such as bolops and black screens.
It was built to try and cut down on the recovery navigation of having to select each zip in turn. With this installer you will only need to flash one zip to have all your mods installed at once. It also allows you have finer control over the mods as you are dealing with normal folders and files rather than zips.
To Use
If you have flashed the folder creator you will find a folder within the sdcard/ROMCleaner folder on your SD called SecondBoot which in itself contains common system folders where mods are flashed to.
Take your mod zip, extract and place the files into these folders according to the structure in the zip.
Upon flashing the installer these files will be placed in the correct places and also have the correct permissions set to them.

Patrics83 spent many months cursing HTCs decision to fill his precious device with crap he didnt want with no way to remove it. After hundreds of letters, emails and even stalking the CEO with no response he finally decided enough is enough and ROMCleaner was born. He spends his time plotting revenge against Sense roms and their bloat in the hope that one day, his message to HTC will get through.
Dude360 one day stumbled across a small post regarding removing crap from his lovely rom. Patric offered him a small taste of how clean a rom could be but it wasnt enough. Dude360 wanted more. He wanted it all, a Sense rom with the size and speed of a AOSP rom. It soon took him over, he began creating monsterous abomaonations which no man should ever flash. Patric decided Dude360 needed a mentor, someone to calm his addiction to cleaning and proceeded to teach him the zen of ROMCleaner.
craack was just a innocent young man when he was abducted by Patric and Dude. They forced days and days of flashing and reflashing roms to get the cleaner working the way they wanted. He tried to resist but the cleaner was too strong and he finally gave in and become one of them. craack now wonders the realm of XDA searching out roms and the unneeded crap they come with to try to fulfill his goal of creating the ULTIMATE CLEANER LIST!

It's all up to the user what is being removed or not... Just make your own user list and all is fine. Short explanation for every app or widget is in first post.
Just read some parts of the guide and you will know exactly how to edit your own personal user list.
This is not an app just a script.

- flash ROMcleaner
- Boot, setup, titanium backup
- flash HTCSetupRemover
- Nothing happens...
It doesn´t erase anything.
Thanks!!

I tried to do the flash and go procedure with the default script and now it only deleted some of the widgets, leaving behind garbage in the widget section (100.0dip, 200.0px, 300, 800). It deleted some apps and some wallpapers.
What can be the problem?? I would love this to work...

I always copied the ROMcleaner_user.txt script from the 1st page link to notepad++ on my pc, edited it and moved it to my phone. That changed it to Dos/windows. Hmm, that's strange. Never heard of that issue before.
But I'm happy you fixed it
Lets discuss about ROM port guidance for dummies like me. Hope it will help others also who want to port it.
Here is my experience for porting several MIUI in my phone, shall other to make it perfect.
First we must have a source rom to port. Desire HD is my chosen since it has some similar hardware.
I replace the source rom using several files from the previous working MIUI rom.
I never mix framework with any other files from previous miui version, I just patch framework.jar and services.jar (decompile and recompile). And for system app files I let them as is, except for torch.apk taken from 1.11.11 and systemUI.apk with manual patch (decompile and recompile).
I use the same driver modules files in every my port (wifi, sensor, light, gps), the rest drivers are compiled in the kernel so we can't touch them except if we can build from source. I use almost the same library in every port. ( You can see the same files from my 2.2.3 and my 2.3.9)
The other files are came from the source dhd rom and additional apps taken from other rom or any mod as long as they're not accessing the hardware directly.
And for the kernel, lately I use SDKernel and mOCK kernel. I've modified both boot image of them. At 2.3.9 as you knew, I use modded SDKernel, I've change default cpu clock and also bringing up the fm radio service in it. And for my current miui (2.3.16) I'm using mOCK kernel, I've change the default cpu clock also, but not bringing up fm service (since I've not succeded yet using FM radio).
Here are some files I don't use from source rom (replace by following files):
- Torch.apk
- hciattach
- netd
- wpa_supplicant
- liba2dp
- libc****
- libcamera
- libcamera_service
- libffmpeg
- libgemini
- libhardware_legacy
- libmmipl
- libmmjpeg
- liboemcamera
- libril
- librpc
- libskia
- libwebcore
- vold
- vold.stab
- btwlancoex
- compassd
- geomagneticd
hci_qcomm_init
hostapd
hostapd_cli
lightd
load_wifi
modempre
netmgrd
nt_password_hash
oem_rpc_svc
orientationd
port-bridge
proximityd
pwgen
qmuxd
rmt_oeminfo
zipalign
all files from system/etc/firmware/wlan
some files in init.d script, I use just hostapd, tweak sdcard read and zipalign. The rest setting I let the default config.
init.qcom.xxx
loca_parameter.ini
wpa_supplicant.conf
all files from /system/lib/hw and /system/lib/modules from previous port ( taken from 1.11.11 and triumph if I'm not wrong... not exactly remembered)
libaudio***
libauth
libcm
libcommondefs
libdiag
libdll
libdsi_netctrl
libdsm
libdsmutils
libgsd**
libidl
libloc***
libmmgsdilib
libnetmgr
libnv
liboem_rapi
liboncrpc
libOpenVG
libpbmlib
libposteffect
libqdp
libqmi
libqueue
libreference-ril
libril***
libwms**
and also all file in /system/usr/keychars and /system/usr/keylayout
If I'll change kernel, then I'll change wifi lib also which work with it.
And add some addons... not related to the core.
wpa_supplicant.conf, gps.conf, build.prop are changed as needed
I think those files are sufficient to make a new port...
Tools to decompile and recompile apk and jar files is apktool, you can use apkmultitool from apkmultitool.com.
How to fix headset:
Decompile services.jar, use this command line;
apktool d services.jar
You'll find services.jar.out folder as output. Find HeadsetObserver.smali file and replace any "h2w" word with "headset_sensor". Use notepad++ to do it. And recompile using this command line:
apktool b services.jar.out
Find the new compiled file at services.jar.out/dist folder.
How to fix native wifi tether and haptic feedback:
The file need to modify is framework-res.apk. You can do the same to decompile and recompile just like fixing headset. Decompile the file and find array.xml in framework-res.out/res/values. Find "wl.0" replace with "softap.*". You'll easily find the level values pattern for haptic feedback in the same file. The pattern values is "off,on,off,on" format to turn off and turn on vibrate in milisecond. Recompile again.
The new compiled file can not be used yet, you should restore the META-INF folder and AndroidManifest file from the original framework-res.apk file. Use 7zip application to open both old and new framework-res.apk and drag META-INF folder and AndroidManifest file to the new compiled framework-res.apk then it ready to use.
Happy porting......!!!
I'll update this post if there are some more useful...
Any suggestion are welcome...
Thank you very much for this. Will surely help newbies like me
FR... I got an idea... if there is an app which will do just like your future release miui kitchen BUT it run in device, so it will have an OTA update, how cool....! I want to help to port it to an android app (apk file), but I just only have several hours in a week for this fun.
I have already scripted what you have written in the first post.
What needs to be done with the framework files?

I think we have to let the original theme and standard apps, the customization is optional due to different need of users. (For example you and me could be like beat audio or maybe not).
For the headset, you have to decompile service.jar, open headsetobserver.smali (i forgot for the exactly name) and change every "h2w" word to "headset_sensor" then recompile, then headset will work.

The kitchen app shall be ready in a day or two.
Shall experiment later when I return home.
Btw, what to change in the framework folder?
Also, you need to mention in your guide that the proprietary hw, keylayout, keychar, module files need to be preserved.
I have pmed zuk regarding his set of proprietary fih/fb0 files so that we can make a skeleton framework to be used for cooking every Rom.

Service.jar is in framework folder FR. My prev post mention the change of this file.
Yes, any files in hw,modules, keychar and keylayout folder at the source rom should be deleted and replaced by files from the working rom.
The skeleton for other rom willbe different. You have to make different folder for skeleton files for different rom. Several are the same files, but separating them will make you easier to manage. So the list file names is not too important, just put them in the folder will be enough. Sorry .... Just my though...

AND LADIES & GENTLEMEN... WE HAVE LIFT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!
REJOICE.
I have made an automatic miui rom porter.
I am calling the app F-CuK-R
Thank you CK, edowar, zuk and elol.
Just booted up 2.3.16 successfully. Ported using my app (Testing the rom it churned out. I am hoping native wifi tethering is fixed)
Shall upload after midnight.
Now we can have MIUI GB release the same day after every official release
Although I must confess a lot of the files I am using are missing in this post.
but fear not, I shall make them public as soon as the app is ready for prime time with a nice gui.
Made the list after several failed experiments over the last week. Finally a simple file comparison (using a script I made) between the official MIUI release and the original 1.11.11 release helped.

1.yeah build.prop tweaks does work. There are mant tweaks like making H/W UI rendering, making jpg quality 100%,increase the sppet of browsing by increasing the buffer rate etc...Yeah the network one works. And I have implemented some tweaks to my rom too...
2.Stock roms doesnt contain most of the tweaks/mods seen in custom roms...Thats what differentialtes stock and custom roms....
Thanks for the response! I'll give it a shot and see
BTW: just a note guys if you edit the build.prop in es explorer make double sure you change the settings of the file back to rw-r--r-- or your going to get a nice black screen on boot!

This is a ROM FILE/MEDIA FILE CUSTOMIZER
This has been tested working with the Jan 08 build of AOKP and Latest EuroSkank CM10.1 Builds I used fireb33 stock build for the basis of the stock zip
THIS MOD WILL WORK FOR ANY DEVICE
as it is ROM dependent not DEVICE dependent
AROMA ROM FILE CUSTOMIZER V5(AOKP & CM10.1 & Stock)
V5 - fixed when you skip the rom debloat error and fixed MusicFX app deletion
This mod will allow you to
-remove ANY or ALL commonly removed system apps from your rom
-remove ANY or ALL Alarms, Ringtones sounds, and Notification Sounds!
-remove all live wallpapers (Located in the System app removal section)
-insert whatever sound media file you wish to be inserted into the relevant locations of the rom (Notifications, Alarms or Ringtones)
-Add your own bootanimation zip into the rom by deleting the old bootanimation.zip and inserting your custom bootanimation.zip
-Remove unused Text to Speech languages that you dont require
-Remove the sample videos
-Add system apps and fix their permissions
-Ability to add user apps and fix their permissions
HOW TO USE THE ROM CUSTOMIZER
If you want to add a particular media file (Notification, Ringtone, Alarm Sound) or Bootanimation to your ROM
- Open ROM CUSTOMIZER in winzip/winrar
- Place your particular sound media file (mp3,ogg, etc) into the relevant folder in the zip
- Place your particular bootanimation zip into the bootanimation folder
- Place your particular system or data app into the relevant folder
-Close the ROM CUSTOMIZER zip
-Transfer ROM CUSTOMIZER zip to your phone and reboot to recovery
Now to the Customizing part
- While in your recovery flash the file, aroma installer will begin
- Follow the aroma installer and choose the relevant boxes
- REBOOT & WIN
This mod does NOT require you to have a clean install of your ROM before using this mod IF your only inserting/deleting MEDIA or BOOTANIMATION.
However IF your are wanting to DELETE SYSTEM APPS it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that this mod is flashed after a full wipe otherwise you MOST LIKELY will get a BOOTLOOP or multiple FORCE CLOSES
For the future builds!
Fix the Blue tint in aroma
Add some more functions!
let me know how this mod goes for your
and swing me a thanks if this helps you out
ENJOY! =]

currently in the process of making an AOKP aroma version similar to this i imagine. that can remove various system apps, whatever ringtones, alarms, notification sounds... and if you choose it can also insert your own ringtones, alarms, notification sounds into the correct locations in the rom in one go.. currently have one simple version that will do the same as custom v0.3c except it wont let manual checking of system/notifications/alarms/ringtones as yet << mainly because I only taught myself how to work with aroma installer this morning
Good work my friend.... Keep it up! Nexus 4 is next on my list of phones to get

=================== V3 ===================
Fixed up alot of code in aroma-config and updater-script to make it WAY easier to add features in the future.
Fixed the way the mod handles deleting files from the ROM to make deletions/debloating easier.
Fixed the way the mod manages pushing files to the phone for a quicker process
Fixed and added some icons
Added the ability to push system apps & fix their permissions
Added warning to let user know of their ROM choice before proceeding further
Added the ability to exit the installation on menus screen
I have a small question, the first post mentions this is ROM independent, then why are the updates for certain roms only at times.
is it because of the way they are built or something else.
I know it's a n00b question but just curious.
Great job by the way.
educate me please
thanks a lot trying

The first releases were independent as I could only make each line of code for the ring tones, alarms, notifications and system apps when I went through the rom. Then I released and started work on the next rom and so forth. Once I had finished each rom individually I then taught myself how to code for aroma. Then added each rom and had to rewrite a lot of the earlier scripts to be compatible with aroma then I took the same approach made an aroma zip for each rom then had to work out a way to merge all 3. I then managed to do that and that was my main goal to have a zip that is easy to understand, not just a script that wipes everything but gives you choice and I now have the ability to add features that will apply to all 3 rom so far without needing to worry about compiling each zip individually. Hope this explains it

Gotcha ....

alright im starting to lose ideas.... anyone who has tried the mod had any problems? or have any suggestions for things they would like to do easily via the recovery?
Sorry if i am in the wrong thread...
Is there anybody know this? Or is there anybody know where to ask this question?
in .zip file (for CWM) there is an updater-script file...
I want to delete some files but i dont want to write the exact names of the files... Is there any way to delete some thing like x*.* or t*.apk or talk*.* etc...
for example if i want to delete all the files which starts with "a" letter... How can i do this?
I know
delete("...");
delete_recursive("...");
commands... But i couldn't find out if there is any way to do this?
Thank you for your answers...
You cant delete stuff using wildcards as far as i know.. That would have made my mod a thousand times easier to write up lol

An updater script only has a specific set of instructions that can be run.. see here http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/introdution_to_edify
This then is also determined by the update binary (the other file in the same location as the updater-script) - for better set of instructions you should extract one of them from a rom that is made for our nexus
In theory if you set it up you may be able to set something with the ifelse command in an updater-script OR if your good with other types of code you may get what you require using an external .sh to which the updater-script only "runs" which may allow for what you want to do. however i feel personally that it will take a fair while setting up a lot of parameters, etc becasue you will need to make sure you not deleting the wrong apk or file. If you stick to the fundamentals of an updater-script you can easily achieve what you want all you need to know is the name of the apk etc.. and with base roms these apk names will not change so it shouldn't be too much of an issue
Then if you work with AROMA there is a different set of instructions for how stuff needs to be setup for the aroma side, then the updater script needs to be a bit more modified from just a stock updater-script to run from how the aroma code makes output prop files, etc
Thats about the best i got.. other than that you will have to research these other possibilities up or make them up yourself and test until they work.
Someone can explain the difference between both?
Beside script files and zipalign, adrenaline have much more files. Since I don't know how to analyse the script files (lack of knowledge) someone can leave a brief explanation?
