[Q] Videocamera drops frames. Is this normal? - Motorola Droid 3

I've shot video at 640x480, 1280x720, and 1920x1080 on my D3 running stock, SteelDroid3, and SteelDroid 4.5. I've shot to internal eMMC, and to external 16gig SD. In *all* records (yes, even the low resolution ones), my videocamera drops about 1 or 2 frames every second. I have used other Android phones (Thunderbolt, and Droid Charge) that do *not* have this problem. This drives me crazy because I'm a video professional in the broadcast industry, and I have an eye for catching anything wrong with a video stream.
Is this normal for our D3 cam? Do any of the build.prob hacks or Atrix cam hacks fix this?

I have the same problem. Did you watch them on your phone or PC?

HDMI laggy and slow. Fixing attempts.

Hi all,
as you might have noticed, HDMI output is not the best, unfortunately.
Playing HD movies lag and skip sometimes, Emulators like Gameboid or Snes9x are heavily lagging / dropping fps.
I would like to ask you if we can solve this issue.
I started looking around and found a thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501414) for the Atrix. It's a resolution changer, that can help improving the performance by choosing a lower resolution for the hdmi output.
Unfortunately I can't get it working on my Droid 3 (Stock 5.7.894, rooted).
It might not work, because the MirrorService.apk has to be replaced and might have to be signed again for my firmware.
What do you think, is there a way of getting it to work, or is there another way to improve the hdmi output? Is there maybe a 30fps cap?
Any Ideas?
The resolution is pretty low to begin with (when outputting to a large tv)... even if lowering the resolution would help, wouldn't it just look crappy? (crappier than it already looks?)
I thought the resolution of the output is 1080p or 720p? My TV shows [email protected] when connecting the cable.
I see what you're saying now... sorry. If you reduce the resolution, the "look" could still be the same, but perhaps could perform better since there is less video/res to process?
This is what I was hoping at least.

Tab S 8.4 Video Playback Lower FPS Out of the Box and Fix

I received my new Tab S 8.4 LTE just this morning at work, I plugged in the power and fired up the bad boy.
After some quick setups and downloaded some apps, I went to test how the video looks. Took out my 128GB MicroSDXC from the Tab PRO 8.4 (yes, it works in my PRO), it has some high variable bit-rate short music videos I encoded with H264 + AAC (Variable 8Mbps - 40Mbps, 23.97 fps).
First, I used the built in player... and to my surprise.. the video is noticeably playing at a lower frame rate and audio is sliiightly out of sync. Not sure the right word for a video playing a lower frame rate, it is not jittery, not stuttery. I tried all the other videos, the same.... including the Samsung video in the internal storage, which showing ~14Mbps data rate.
I then tried MX Player with all H/W+ deoder switched on, same thing. Then I tried BSPlayer, also with Hardware acceleration, no good. I was disappointed. I searched this forum and googled but I only keep seeing people with micro stutters, but not the issue I'm looking for. Restarted the Tab S, same thing.
I don't understand... the videos are working fine in the PRO. I was thinking maybe QS800 is superior ?
Eventually I decided to just Factory Reset and redo the whole thing again, to see if that fixes it. And it did fix it. Videos are running as smooth as it should again, yay
So in case anyone else having video frame rate issue, Factory Reset. Case Closed.
How do you test your video framerates?
That's what I was looking for earlier, but since I was at work, I couldn't look for long enough. Was hoping something like Fraps is available, but I just went ahead and Factory Reset it while I only had a few apps installed.
But the video frame rate issue was noticeable as long as you have watched the video with different means (Computer or another working tablet) to compare.
To check the video's original frame rate itself, and since I use MX Player, I just tap and hold the video file, then tap Properties. It shows frame rate, bit rate, video resolution, codec, etc.

Camera problem.

Outside (the house), cameras works great, quality is good and about 12mbps bit-rate and 30 fps, inside however cameras lag like hell, record at 10 fps 4mbps (bit-rate drop of course related to fps drop). I think it has do do with lighting, inside a room it records at 10fps but if I point camera at a light bulb it goes to 30 fps and records smoothly.
So seems like a lot of video noise is generated when filming in dark and hardware can't keep up. Are you tablets the same? is there anything that can fix this? It's on FireOS 5.1.1.
edit: Ok, I see from this video that this is expected from this tablet. But not sure about the reason, maybe it has to do with not enough light reaching the sensor for 30fps? I have no idea what I'm talking about though. Is there any software way to increase FPS in the dark?
P.S the camera app is so bad without any options.

Every device with a camera I have ever owned works like this, including film cameras since they were invented. Less light = longer exposure, everything else being equal.

4K video recording

Hello everyone, on my XZ2 I can't record 4K videos. Well, I can, but they stutter while recording, or even freeze up. Sometimes the phone then freezes up too. Some reviewer mentioned stuttering viewfinder while recording videos, but when playing back it stutters too. Only if I disable shake reduction and HDR I have a chance of recording relatively smooth video. Otherwise I experience massive frame drops. h264 or h265 don't seem to make a difference. I've also recorded to the internal memory to make sure it's not a slow SD card causing issues.
It's the first phone this has ever happened to me. LG G5? Smooth 4K. LG V20? Smooth too. Xiaomi Mi 6? Yep. Even with a Snapdragon 810 (!) did smooth videos (I think my Snapdragon 800 based Mi 3 was smoother using Open Camera...).
Basically: WTH?
Also the XZ2 keeps overheating when taking photos. As a result certain features are deactivated, or it even quits the camera.
Any tricks? Anyone else having issues? My phone is a marketing sample, so probably early in the production run, so that may cause the issues?
Same here on 4K recording. No overheat on camera yet. Just went on holiday and took 900+ pics with no issues. Decent quality too. Disappointed with 4K recording capability though.

Choppy video.

For some reason I get some kind of severe lag when recording video, especially noticable during camera movements but it's there all the time. You also hear the chops in the sound. The problem is worst in 1080p, it's a bit better in 4k. 1080 gets the choppy lags in all 3rd party apps I've tried as well as in the stock app, very frustrating. Changing the bitrate doesn't seem to affect this issue much, it's doesn't get less choppy at lower or higher bitrates (in Open Camera).
Video stabilization and noise reduction and stuff like that is turned off across the board as far as it's possible since I use a gimbal and do all processing in post. And yes the video is choppy with or without the gimbal, it makes no difference for that.
At first I thought it had to to with bad support for the 3rd party apps I use but then I realized the problem is just as bad or worse in the Huawei photo app, which of course produces bad video quality in the first place but that's another issue.
Recording in slow motion on the other hand works fine, cranking up the bitrate to the max and recording in 120fps in open camera with manual focus produces the best slo-mo quality 1080 footage I've seen a phone do so far. So I know for a fact that the phone can produce good quality 1080p footage, I just can't make it work with normal frame rates for some reason.
Anyone else had this problem? Is my phone simply malfunctioning or did I do something wrong? I'm on the 131 firmware version, firmware finder also lists the 131a as compatible, could that solve the issue?
Any help appreciated.

I have this issue in 60fps
When I revert back to full stock it's fluid and works as expected.
Once I've rooted and installed twrp etc plus a few apps it starts to get laggy, I don't use 4K so don't care..30fps 1080p is what I use most and it's perfect..just annoying that 60fps doesn't work as it should..really annoying.
At total stock it should be fine.
I also use a magisk module called swap torpedo which eliminates the use of a swap file, not sure if that matters or not.
Also I've seen this issue present on all firmwares
In which app do u have this issue?

All apps including Huaweis own.
I've contacted support and they say they'll try to find out what the problem is with my choppy 1080 video.
Obviously that doesn't adress the absurdly low bitrate limits and lack of support for advanced functions in 3rd party apps, which are simply limitations of the p20 pro for now, they said they are aware of those issues as well and looking to fix them.

Ok so may have a fix for this.
I'd previously changed device resolution to HD from FHD changing this back fixes 60fps video, it makes sense that it would offer the same for the other issues you've been having.
Check it out its under Display.
About the laggy video, I just looked into this issue and found something really interesting. When choosing full HD resolution and shooting a video, I find it laggy. But when choosing FHD+ 2160 x 1080 p, the video is amazingly smooth. I suspect that when you choose FHD, the phone is doing some downsampling which causes a huge load on the CPU and makes it laggy while FHD+ does not cause such a big downsampling, because of the 2160 width, which is the native 4k height. Maybe someone who knows more can confirm if what I'm saying is actually true. The kirin 970 does not seem capable of proper processing power like it is advertised.
I have te same issue. FHD 30fps is horribly stuttering, while FHD 60fps or 4K are ok. Do someone found a solution to this? It's incredible that the most powerful and advanced camera phone at the moment have this flaw!

Hey, did anyone find another fix for this? I changed my screen resolution and it makes no difference, still getting laggy and choppy video.
Hi guys,
I have just recorded wedding speeches and the video is choppy as hell at 60fps. The audio is fine but video isn't. Any way I can salvage the clips?
Thanks in advance
