[Q] please someone anyone HELP my samsung captivate is soft bricked - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok to start with I am soft bricked cause i got the phone-!-computer on my screen. here is how it got bricked to start with... was updating to android 2.3 gingerbread with kies mini and the first time when finished updating my wifi would not work so i flashed the rom with odin and it was a bad version cause instantly it went to recovery mode. so I went and downloaded odin one click and flashed it back to stock android eclair and went to update to 2.2 froyo with kies mini our power blinked and now im softbricked.
ok here is what ive tried so far... 3 button combo both volumes and power tried all that. ok next i tried one click unbrick it just say failed everytime... tried AIO captivate toolbox and no avail.. went radio shack got 3 resistors 100k made a jig touched pins 4 and 5 and didnt work either.. so my questions are as follows
1. what next????
2. could i have possibly shorted out my usb port on my phone since i accidently slipped and touched a pin i should not have and AIO captivate toolbox says usb debugging isnt on.
3. is there any way to test the micro usb port on the phone to see if its working right?
any and all help would be very much appreciated.
thanks...

You're actually in an ok place. That phone--/!\--computer screen will function like download mode most times. Just try your Odin file again and you should be fine.

odin isnt recognizing it. is there a way i can make it recognize it?

I just went through this and got my phone working so no need to panic. Odin wouldnt see my phone but heimdall does. Search for the kb2 heimdall one click package and see if that helps. Since you flashed back to 2.2 youll need to use kb2. If you are on GB i897 bootloaders youll need the kk4 heimdall one click package

Try different ports, if nothing else. Look in the "Captivate Connection Issues" post in my signature for more items.
Also, you will probably want to stop using the AIO Toolbox. That particular piece of software is a little risky, as it flashes a known dangerous bootloader setup.

I found myself in the same boat. 3-button combo won't work, you have to remove battery and usb cable. Replace battery. Plug usb cable into the motherboard directly(rear), hold volume + and volume - then plug the usb cable into your phone. hold volume buttons until your phone boots into download mode. (assuming you have proper drivers installed)

didnt work
tried both heimdels kk2 and kk4 they both say looking for device. and also tried plugging my usb cord into every usb port on my computer still nothing.

Did your drivers unseat? for some odd reason i had to reinstall the drivers to get mine out of soft brick.

drivers
would that be the drivers for the program or the phone? and also on the kk2 and kk4 they download as jar files just like oneclick unbrick did so do i need to unzip them and move the jar file to where the exe folder is then right click and run as administrator or can i just run the jar file i downloaded?
also the the zadig driver program that comes with heindel programs will not see my phone at all when plugged in any usb port but my wife has a captivate also and when i plugged hers in zadig can see it as samsung usb composite device....

Pull battery, pull cable. With phone off, replace battery. Then press volume up only, and power. When screen loads, plug your USB in. If you get the system files screen, press the menu key. Then try Oden. This is what I had to do to get it to work.
Gingerbread through mini kies sucks. Your better off getting Gingerbread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843

didnt work either
tried the just the volume up and power and plugged in usb still stuck in brick mode...

didnt work
the volume up and power then plug usb didnt work still in brick mode. should i try the usb jig with the phone off or on? when i touch pins 4 and 5 with the jig and the phone off the screen will come on but still computer- ! - phone no download mode

got it
finally got into download mode with the jig and alot of wiggling cussing fussing griping and finally praying lol.... thanks to all of you for your help not many strangers will help people anymore so thanks guys for your time i really appreciate it greatly

so i just updated odin and i still got nothing. so what are the drivers? ill try that.

if you dont even know what drivers are in windows, and have other people set things up for you, you should not be flashing your phone in the first place.
any time you buy a device and hook it up to windows you install??? drivers.
Google: "drivers"... a piece of software that tells an operating system how to use a device.
but it is doubtful reinstalling your drivers will help
what version of odin are you using? what are you trying to flash now? what were you flashing when it messed up?
im sorry but this may end up being an expensive lesson not to do things you dont understand. you may have to send your phone away to be jtagged or unbricked.

I still have the phone...!...computer screen so i should be able to flash it back to stock. and even though i didn't add the drivers I know what im doing so don't assume Im a noob at this. and for your information I own 6 Samsung captivates and I work for Mobile Tech Videos so I flash these phone a lot I flash at least twice a day. so Jtaging it will be rather inexpensive but I would like to figure this out so I don't have to spend my time shipping this phone out. I notice that a lot of people have the same trouble as I am having so if I figure out how to solve the worst soft brick (witch I now have) it will be great for A post that covers everything with this screen. I got my phone this way by the USB port falling out during flashing so I'm lucky to even have this screen. I was at gingerbread 2.3.5 stock flashing to ice cream sandwich. I tryed using the USB jig but it failed so all I need to know is what the driver names are so i can try what was recommended. I also think ADB might help solve the problem some how some way. I just got the most recent Odin I was using 1.3 now im using 1.85

Not to be mean or start something, but if you work for mobile tech videos and you don't know what drivers are or you say you flash phones multiple times a day, then you should have a GREAT idea of what to do to fix this problem. Did you flash an ICS ROM and it bootlooped on the first flash, well that is supposed to happen. And Since you were on 2.3.5 then there is no DL mode combo problem. I don't know what to tell you. use your resources and Google it, or better yet let me Google that for you...

I know,Another Bricked Phone...sigh

I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port

Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

You guys rock! I don't know how, cause I could have sworn I D/L'd it from that link before and I got the generic Odin, but it looks like I have the right one now! Thank you for your patience with us noobs as we start getting into this new world!
glad you got yours working. i have officially given up and receiving a new one on tuesday. i tried everything but somehow someway the phone is not recognized in download mode. oh well have to mess the with new one then lol

I was having the same problem. Have you tried powering off, start odin, hold both the volume up/down, then plug in the usb to your phone?

BRICKED 1st post edited.

EDIT:
odin crashed while going back to stock then
my phone will get to download mode buuuuut.. my computer doesnt recognize my phone...
i re-downloaded drivers and the phone is recognized however odin failed the 2 times i got it in dl mode(took about an hour to get it each time)... so i have a jig ordered but with odin not working im not feeling optimistic
nothing seems to happen when its plugged into the wall no battery icon. i reinstalled drivers hoping that would help with no luck.. i just got it back in dl mode after like an hour of it not turning on for me but it doesnt do anything once i get it there.
Get odin3 one click and use it in dl mode. It will brg ur phone back to stock

definately problem of bad USB..either cable or port....try using different USB cable or different computer....Use full odin by iCezar...its with minimum risk....specially very beneficial in cases like yours....
my pc doesnt see my phone. thats the issue i cant use odin. and the only thing my phone will do is glow black or go to download mode, idk if its charging but its getting hard to get it in dl mode, multiple tries atm no luck
i have already tried reinstalling the drivers. what are they called so i can delete them and install again rather then just redownload maybe that will help?

try connecting your phone to pc when odin is already running. See whether it detects. Mine worked this way.

thats not a big deal, just get it in download mode, and flash it with odin.
EDIT: might as well us this post to say what my computer says with usb since i got in in dl mode again...
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.
then something about for assistance in solving this issue click here
this has happened to me acouple times, the first was my fault I pull the usb before odin finished. I could get back into Download mode but Odin would not see the phone and computer would not recognize the phone either, device not recognized.
I tried rebooting, re-installing drivers etc. did not work.
but after an hour or so I finally got it to recognize and odin'd back to stock and back to flashing I was.
this is what I did hope it works for you.
1. disconnect all usb devices
2. un-install captivate drivers
3. reboot computer
4. goto device manager and verify that there is no USB device errors, if there is delete them and reboot again verify again in device manager.
5. install captivate drivers
6. reboot computer
7. start ODIN (DG or iCezars, iCezars is safer)
8. plug USB cable into the computer first (the one that came with the phone not an after market one)
9. hold both up and down volume buttons on the phone
10. plug the usb cable into the phone quickly to get into download mode (if I plugged the phone is slowly ODIN did not recognize the phone no COM, once I did it quick and it picked it up)
11. push START as soon as ODIN shows the COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4 etc (this had to be done quickly too, If i waited ODIN would show the COM but still would not start flashing back to stock)
this worked for me more than once I hope it helps you good luck
oh ok thanks, ill give that a try when i get off of work. i hope my battery doesnt die idk if its charging or not
well no luck even getting back to download mode. i bought a jig so i guess im waiting and trying while i wait.
i keep reading its possible to completely brick if odin fails... did i perma brick?
well a bump of sorts, the jig should come in the mail tomorrow. i miss my phone
jig came in the mail, im working on a few failed odin3 attempts but as i freaked out and started typing this post it seems like a great success. the jig works wonderful

I have not had to do this but I know some others had issues with Odin and had to right click on Odin and run as administrator for it to work. Also the Odin 1 click should work in almost any situation to get you back to stock. The only worry (again never had the problem) is that depending on the build version of the phone you could lose the three button recovery. Look for the Odin that DG posted.

[Q] I Killed my Captivate

So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.
well that one worked so thanks but still no 3g or any data connection

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.

[Q] lsusb not detecting bricked Captivate

Hey guys
This is my first post at XDA but I am not new to flashing ROM to my Captivate
I have looked all over the forums but could not find an answer to my questions.
My Captivate was originally on Eclair, later upgraded to Froyo with lag fix and it fixed nothing. It was still really slow and unusable. I saw one of my friends running Gingerbread and man it was blazing fast. So I decided to try some Gingerbread.
First of all, my Captivate if 1008 batch. The three button to download mode is not supposed to work for this batch but it worked and I was able to get it back to stock ROM. I was able to use the stock ROM too so I decided to try upgrade to Gingerbread. This time the 3 button download mode did not work. So I did "adb reboot download" and put it into download mode and all problems started.
1. No USB port is detecting the phone.
2. The battery slipped out of the phone and after I put it back, it gave me the infamous phone--!--computer soft bricked state.
3. In Windows 7, No "3 button fix to put it to download mode with Odin3 open" is working
4. In Linux (Ubuntu 10.10), I tried the one-click-unbrick JAR file and the error is "Device Not Detected".
5. I have tried 2 different Micro USB cables and all possible USB ports, still no response.
6. Once I connect the phone to the computer, I get the phone--!--computer logo but lsusb does not show the device.
7. On Windows 7, Device manager does not show any USB device when I connect the phone.
So basically I think the problem is the device is not showing up on any USB port, so there is no question of ODIN, Hiemdall or One-click-anything. What should I do now?
Thanks

Thanks

Have you tried cleaning the USB port on your phone with some rubbing alcohol and a small piece of cloth on a toothpick? Maybe it's just not making good contact.
Let me give that a quick try.
Two question.
1. Is the device supposed to be detected even in the soft bricked state by the OS?
2. Even in soft bricked state, is the battery charging? Cuz if its not, I need to order an external battery charger.
Thanks

If you haven't looked through it, check out the "Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help" in my signature.
To answer your questions:
1. Yes. That screen is quasi-download-mode, and the OS should see it.
2. Honestly, I don't know. I think the answer is yes, but someone who understands the hardware better than I do would have to respond.
almost the same crap as me, our captivates are dying >.<

ok so i bricked my phone, then was able to make a jig which allowed me to get the gingerbread bootloaders installed on the captivate. Now, neither my laptop or pc cannot find the phone while it is in download mode. What should I do from here. I am running ginger bread and cannot make download mode work.

Slimbean Rom
Stuck on either battery screen(batttery wont show up) only circle icon or at&t world phone screen
Tried button Combos as well as jig still wont change from Batteryscreen
any advice greatly appreciated
I dont know if this is the right place but I am desprate I have looked and looked for possible answers nothing worked....
Finally got it into download mode but computer did not detect unplugged phone now its stuck in cell ! computer icon and phone
turns on automatically when battery is inserted
The phone ! Computer screen is download mode. This has happened because the last time you tried to use Odin the cable was pulled to soon. Open the Odin one click your trying to use while the phone is on that screen, and plug in the USB. If Odin does not recognize it you can look here for connection issues.

Heimdall and Odin won't work on same USB port. Have you tried using a different one?
Kinda a shot in the dark but if you haven't tried it yet, put the jig in before the battery. Or try the jig a couple times (wait like 20-30sec in between) with the battery in, that worked for me before.
Odin help
Hey Guys... I am trying to see if anyone can help me figure out the problem with my phone.. i currently have the stock rom running 2.2 i897uckb2
Kernel - 2.6.32.9 - Froyo build
Now I have trying to get Odin to recognize my phone when I am in download mode but it noes not show up in the port field. I have been trying both odin 1.3 as well as Odin 1 click...
The funny thing is that Heimdall can recognize the phone on one click but i am trying to get odin to recognize so that i can switch roms... I preffer Odin to Heimdall so if anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.
By the way if i am not in download mode and the phone is on and I connect it and have odin on, it actually recognizes the phone... so not sure...
Thanks for any help guys...

Have you tried another USB port? My experience with heidmall is that when you install it's own driver, Odin no longer recognizes the phone when you boot into download mode. If for some reason it still doesn't work, I suppose you could uninstall your captivate drivers and re install them.
Ok... cuz really i did feel that it was because of the one click heimdall that the driver might not be recognized... Mind pointing me to how to un install and then re install the driver on the phone...?
Thanks again for the quick response.

Heimdall installs it's own drivers to the USB port you use it on. You will have to use another USB port if you wanna use Odin (Your pc should have more than one).
You could uninstall the drivers but it is far more complicated than just using a different USB port.
location GPS antenna on i897. Well, then disassemble the phone and the antenna to be under the speaker if the speaker remove the antenna located in the top right corner of the board. Who can come up with how to enhance signal reception, write.
