So let's assume that I flashed my Captivate all the way up to ICS. Only problem is, I flashed the GTi-9000 version, whereas I have a SGH-897. It works, however I get no audio output from my internal speaker.
This however is not my problem, as I cannot boot into any recovery/download mode. Button combos (Adjusted to what I've found the softbuttons to have changed to), ADB reboots, nothing works. I cannot get into any form of recovery.
I now ask for help, from you lovely folks. I know I done goofed, and I'm looking at performing the Unbrickable mod, once other attempts have shown to be fruitless.
So, is there any way to flash back to stock without being able to go to download/recovery mode?
Flash a stock ROM. Follow the sig link below to Mikes Safe KF1. Flash it, you should be back to stock I897 GB.

Well, the problem being is that I can't get to the proper place needed in order to flash anything. I've gotten as far as ADB atleast being able to interface with it, however.

Should get you going
On aosp Roms and reboot download doesn't work. You need button combos or a jig.
If you've flashed i9000 bootloaders then the button combos will have changed.
Volume up and power for recovery
Volume down and power for download mode.
This is how people hard brick... Did you not read or thought it would work out of the box?
Dear god, the method for inserting the cable whilst holding up and down actually worked. I had tried every single other one, only with negligence to that one. Thanks. I really couldn't believe this one when I got to the download screen. I had been brute-forcing almost every combo imaginable - except I hadn't tried slipping the usb cable in inbetween them.
edit:My problem was one of mis-reading, my eyesight is sometimes a little iffy. I downloaded a few different ICS roms, and then went to look through them to see which I wanted to install. I then went and copied it onto my phone, and mistakenly placed a copy of ICS meant for the i9000, instead of my i897. How I didn't realize that when I flashed it, beats me.
I now have the proper version installed however, and all is working fine. Still can't believe it! But damn, what a hearty little phone this is. An idiot can install entirely different firmware for it and still recover.

Don't delete it. You made a mistake and then recovered from it. You should be proud of that! Way to go!
I can sure empathize I flashed the ics "value pack" that was leaked. That was for a different phone to, and I recovered.

On a side note. i9000 icssgs can be used on our i897 just need a reoriented kernel
Agree with above

Hello All,
I have the Rogers Captivate i-896 and recently moved over from a Bell I-9000 GTM. Reason why I moved from I9000 is due to the scare that most of the Bell Versions weren't flash friendly.
Due to my bad experience in the past, I just want to double check before I flash any roms. My two big interests lately have been either the Firefly ROM or Pheonix 2.2.1 version 4.5. Just wondering, anyone on XDA with a Rogers I896 that is currently running any of these ROMs with no issues at all?
Sorry if this is a repeat. I'm just not about to read 800 pages through the thread. Thanks a lot and your feedback will help a lot!
I too would love to know the answer to this.

Firefly all the way!
The only flaw I have found in it is the SMS timestamps, that can be fixed by installing SMS time fix from the market.
Its infinately customizable. (there is a huge thread based on it and pheonix here, alot of the Pheonix stuff will work on it as well)
It also does not apply the AT&T boot screen on startup, so if you do have any warranty issues getting back to stock is all that much easier.
I'm currently running it and its great!
Its also based on our stock rom.........Whats better than that

PS @nickm50 so my understanding is that you said that Phoenix themes is compatible with firefly right?

Some of the parts of them are. I don't believe the whole themes are. But there are firefly themes in the thread as well.
I know the dialers and boot screens work 100% for sure.
Flashing as we speak.. thanks for the feedback
Can I theme the Stock Dialer on the Fire Fly ROM? Or, will I screw things up if I flash this?

Dammit. Now I feel like a noob, with the question I am about to ask...........
Sooooo, the old way I flashed the rom is not working for me. I am installing Clockwork Mod Recovery via Rom Manager, and then I keep clicking "Reboot into Recovery Mode".. I've done this process over and over atleast 5 times, and its not booting into CWM Recovery. What do I do?
I am trying the OneClick ODIN, but it doesn't give me an Option of which ROM file to flash..
HELP?!
Have you got firefly installed?
What do you mean? I downloaded the ROM and put it on my SD Card.. But, its just a matter of getting into Clockwork Mod Recovery so I can flash it.. I know what to do in Clockwork, just don't know why its not booting into Clockwork Mod.. :??
power down the phone.
boot into recovery manually vol-/vol+ and power
when you get into recovery choose reinstall packages.
Hi.
I have strange problem. My home button doesn't work but I'm able to go into recovery and download (by 3-button combo). I changed plenty firmwares with pit and repartition with no success. Anyone can help??
boot into recovery, try and 'fix permissions' and also there is an option of 'key test' or something similar to that.
what ROM was you on / flashed when this problem arose ??
On criscelo v.3.7 after aplying fugu kernel. I will try what you said and report.
fugu kernel, there you go thats your culprit
flash a different kernel thru odin or recovery and i bet you that fixes the issue.
But as I said I changed plenty firmwares with repartition. So I don't think I would help a lot...
Ok i tried to fix permisions and key test. On key test it doesn't show that my home button works - but still I am able to go into recovery and download with 3 button. So home button in some way works. However it doesn't work in recovery and in rom. So it's hardware related or I should try anything else?? But how it can be hardware related as I can go into recovery and download...
thats the mystery puzzling my mind too lol.
it most definitely cant be hardware related. does recovery and download mode work EVERYTIME without fail ??
what was the oldest firmware you flashed ?? may i recommend going way way back to eclair. something like JM1 with a 512PIT ??
Yes I can enter recovery and download always.
I can try even older than JM1 if it would help. But ok will try JM1. Just install with re-partition and check if it help or anything else??
yea but make sure it comes in all 3 files. phone modem csc. and add the 512 PIT, and make sure re-partition is checked.
then report back good luck i have my fingers crossed for ya !
It didn't work :/ What to do now. Mayby there is any code to fix home button firmware or something :/
It's really strange. I can try even older firmware.
i dont think that FW is going to be the issue,
this seems a little more complex then i originally thought
phone does still work tho right ??
try this app i have attached and see if you can fix it..
if not we gonna need some help from a nice helpful friendly developer lol.
Still no sucess :/
Probably I will give it on warranty...
oh dear !!
i really thought we would of cracked it by now.
i have no more ideas. i wish i could help even more.
its such sad news (for me) when a SGS has to be sent away for repairs.
i always feel as if its a child being sent into foster care, thats how it makes me feel

It occurs that I have home button pushed all the time. So I can enter recovery and download without pressing home button. Is there simply way to fix this or only warranty?

My view is always flash stock Eclair rom with pit and repartition to rule out software/rom error leaving only hardware problem .

I was installing the MIUI rom on the Nook when I had a lot of FC's. rebooted into recovery using the SC card, and wiped data. After doing that, it is now stuck in CWM, I cannot navigate or reset the device. I pulled the back cover off, and I see that the battery is not removable. I have held down power, click variations of all buttons, and it is still stuck. Any ideas? My google searches have not resulted in a similar issue, just people who can flash CWM but cant get out of it...
Ideas?
smacked it hard. Rebooted. Fixed. (Sort of...)
Press and hold the N button and the Power button for more than 30 seconds, release the power button when you see a flash light on the screen, keep holding the N button.
Play around combination of these 2 buttons until you get the Factory Reset then perform it.

Wow, the exact same thing happen to me, going back to CM.....too bad cuz I love MIUI on my Evo.
OK. Well, I can flash Roms, but I've been having issues with CWM. If I wipe ANYTHING, either factory reset, cache, or davlik cache, it simply locks up.
I'm downloading the stock software with root, and I am going to try again to install MIUI without wiping. Feel free to chime in with any ideas in the mean time.
Thanks guys!

What CM are you using? I tried CM and I had no luck. My EVO LOVES MIUI... My NOOK is hating me. It will LOAD, but can't download anything from the market. Tired flashing a rooted Rom:

Tried doing a factory reset from the pushin n button, and it did it, loaded into MIUI, and everything is DANDY.... I don't know how I even did it, but that did it.
MIUI is up and running!
You might want to ensure you have the most up to date version of CWR and rom manager. There have been horror stories of folks getting stuck in bootloop hell because of this. Just saying.....

The tab does not respont to anything,it wont turn on by any means , but windows and odin detected it. I've seen that you can unbrick it from soft brick but i cant get to download mode
Try OneClickUnbrick,
search for it.

Tried it, didnt work, when i clicked it it jsut sent me to the help centre, where i had to install three things, framework.net for windows which i have, heimdall i had, and the other thing it installed, so i rebooted the computer and it still did not detect it. It states in the thread that the oneclickunbrick is for soft bricks. And i cant even reach the boot logo nor download mode.

Hi
I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini GT-I8190N
Stock 4.1.2, I think currently on it.
From Carphone Warehouse (UK) Not sure if it is unlocked to any network...(O2 if any)
Can someone please give a noob to rooting some advice on the best way to back up the system in case of a major disaster before rooting,
And also some advice on how to root, install 4.2.2 on it.
Total noob with android so a walk through would be appreciated.
I have looked at the forum but am a bit baffled as a lot of the walkthroughs seem to fail for some and work for others....
Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming that increasing the Flash Counter value and reseting it to default is not a bad thing, so here's simple instructions:
Make sure you have proper usb drivers installed for your samsung or ODIN won't find the phone!
Important! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852
Step 1, Download ODIN, CWM and the rooted 4.2.2 ROM + GAPPS you wish to install and copy them into your phone (phone memory or external SD)
Step 2, Shutdown your phone. Boot it into Download mode (press and hold VOLUME DOWN and HOME KEY, switch phone on and let go the two buttons when you see the warning)

}
Step 3, Use ODIN to flash custom recovery into your phone
Step 4, Reboot into the custom recovery (shutdown the phone completely, when it's off, press and hold VOLUME UP and HOME KEY, then switch the phone on. when recovery logo is on, you can let go off the two buttons)
Step 5, Use CWM to backup the current ROM and install the desired ROM. Remember to do a Factory Reset + DALVIK/CACHE format before rebooting!
Step 6, Install Triangle Away, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22462960&postcount=1 and nuke away the pesky Flash Counter!
Happy times!

If that's the first boot after installing another rom, let it sit around for ~5minutes. If it takes longer than that, something is wrong. You are missing GUI (TouchWiz/Trebuchet) or you have flashed completely wrong rom.

The most simple way is to reflash the stock rom back in the phone.
