Hi
I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini GT-I8190N
Stock 4.1.2, I think currently on it.
From Carphone Warehouse (UK) Not sure if it is unlocked to any network...(O2 if any)
Can someone please give a noob to rooting some advice on the best way to back up the system in case of a major disaster before rooting,
And also some advice on how to root, install 4.2.2 on it.
Total noob with android so a walk through would be appreciated.
I have looked at the forum but am a bit baffled as a lot of the walkthroughs seem to fail for some and work for others....
Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming that increasing the Flash Counter value and reseting it to default is not a bad thing, so here's simple instructions:
Make sure you have proper usb drivers installed for your samsung or ODIN won't find the phone!
Important! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147852
Step 1, Download ODIN, CWM and the rooted 4.2.2 ROM + GAPPS you wish to install and copy them into your phone (phone memory or external SD)
Step 2, Shutdown your phone. Boot it into Download mode (press and hold VOLUME DOWN and HOME KEY, switch phone on and let go the two buttons when you see the warning)

}
Step 3, Use ODIN to flash custom recovery into your phone
Step 4, Reboot into the custom recovery (shutdown the phone completely, when it's off, press and hold VOLUME UP and HOME KEY, then switch the phone on. when recovery logo is on, you can let go off the two buttons)
Step 5, Use CWM to backup the current ROM and install the desired ROM. Remember to do a Factory Reset + DALVIK/CACHE format before rebooting!
Step 6, Install Triangle Away, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22462960&postcount=1 and nuke away the pesky Flash Counter!
Happy times!

If that's the first boot after installing another rom, let it sit around for ~5minutes. If it takes longer than that, something is wrong. You are missing GUI (TouchWiz/Trebuchet) or you have flashed completely wrong rom.

The most simple way is to reflash the stock rom back in the phone.

So let's assume that I flashed my Captivate all the way up to ICS. Only problem is, I flashed the GTi-9000 version, whereas I have a SGH-897. It works, however I get no audio output from my internal speaker.
This however is not my problem, as I cannot boot into any recovery/download mode. Button combos (Adjusted to what I've found the softbuttons to have changed to), ADB reboots, nothing works. I cannot get into any form of recovery.
I now ask for help, from you lovely folks. I know I done goofed, and I'm looking at performing the Unbrickable mod, once other attempts have shown to be fruitless.
So, is there any way to flash back to stock without being able to go to download/recovery mode?
Flash a stock ROM. Follow the sig link below to Mikes Safe KF1. Flash it, you should be back to stock I897 GB.

Well, the problem being is that I can't get to the proper place needed in order to flash anything. I've gotten as far as ADB atleast being able to interface with it, however.
Check here

Should get you going
On aosp Roms and reboot download doesn't work. You need button combos or a jig.
If you've flashed i9000 bootloaders then the button combos will have changed.
Volume up and power for recovery
Volume down and power for download mode.
This is how people hard brick... Did you not read or thought it would work out of the box?
Dear god, the method for inserting the cable whilst holding up and down actually worked. I had tried every single other one, only with negligence to that one. Thanks. I really couldn't believe this one when I got to the download screen. I had been brute-forcing almost every combo imaginable - except I hadn't tried slipping the usb cable in inbetween them.
edit:My problem was one of mis-reading, my eyesight is sometimes a little iffy. I downloaded a few different ICS roms, and then went to look through them to see which I wanted to install. I then went and copied it onto my phone, and mistakenly placed a copy of ICS meant for the i9000, instead of my i897. How I didn't realize that when I flashed it, beats me.
I now have the proper version installed however, and all is working fine. Still can't believe it! But damn, what a hearty little phone this is. An idiot can install entirely different firmware for it and still recover.

Don't delete it. You made a mistake and then recovered from it. You should be proud of that! Way to go!
I can sure empathize I flashed the ics "value pack" that was leaked. That was for a different phone to, and I recovered.

On a side note. i9000 icssgs can be used on our i897 just need a reoriented kernel
Agree with above

Great - I have a P3113 that had 4.0.3 on and and I rooted it (which installed CWrecovery on it). I then copied this update ZIP file to the sd card and installed it using the CWR and when I boot up, it now just cycles through the startup logo, make a little chime sound and resets and keep in a loop - I can't even figure out how to turn the power off.
Nice!

Thanks for the tip - it will come in handy again I am sure.
I also found another thread that allowed me to use odin to restore to the stock ROM.
I didn't want to use a "newer" rom (4.1) because from what I understand, android 4.1 and newer dont support flash, but 4.03 does. That was pretty much the only reason why.

4.1.x does support flash in the stock browser. You just either gave to restore the app from a backup, or side load/install it.

hi,
last night i connect my ds7 to the computer and in the internal memory was a file named 'driver.rar' i deleted the file and disconnect the device.
since i disconnect,there is a green line in the screen.i reboot the device,formate,factory reset..nothing..still a green line
i dont think is a hardware problem
i need your help
Need more info. What ROM are you on? Have you done a factory reset?
yes i did
nd im on 3.2

are you sure?everything started since i deleted the driver.rar from the internal sdcard
It's a concidence, android cant even read rar files without downloaded apps.
You can make a blank file named driver.rar and it cant tell the difference
I dont want to install custom rom
can i reinstall 3.2?
How can i be sure that is a bad display?
i think you dont understand me.
i removed "drivers.rar" from the root dir
i searched how can i root my device and i found this:

and in step 6:he ask me to copy the drivers.rar but i remove it and since i removed i have a green line...

Step #6 asks to copy Drivers.zip not Drivers.rar, there is a difference. Like TheManii states, a DS7 can't read a "rar" file, only a special app made for that purpose can.
I don't have any "rar" files on my DS7 but do have such files on my PC.
Drivers.zip is a folder that comes with a new DS7 although there a few that claim that it didn't.

Its a coincidence. Trust us.
You can tell if its a bad display if by after a factory reset you still see it or if you install a custom ROM and still see it.
If you aren't going to listen to us, when three people have answered your question, why are you here?:highfive:
i cant install custom rom cuz i do not have the "driver" in step 6
factory reset didnt work
please help...
by the way
just now i understand that i did factory data reset and not factory reset
update
i install cm9 rom and still have a green line on the screen
even in the recovery..
what can i do?
why the line comes?

3) Sell it on eBay noted with a bad screen for parts.

It's not esay to brick this phone, try liti15 advice and for sure you'll bring the p990 back to life.
Best way like liti15 said before is this toolkit, nearly unbricks everything
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
Read the instructions first.
I recommend first to look up the Dev Forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1002) and select a ROM to use.
Look up in it´s thread what Bootloader is needed and flash (Option 4 or 8 in All-in-One Tool).
go to CWM on your device and flash ROM as usual (maybe ask here if you need help, or look up how to flash a ROM )
flash additional stuff if needed (gapps, ...)
reboot, there you go
Thank you

Thank yooouuuuuuuuuu so much
Before I go on, I'd like to say THANKS to @MaDaLiNoSt and @Ezzam_Itachi for and all others for helping me in my "tragic" incident about me not going to Recovery Mode and stuck in Linux.
So here we go.
Before we start, You'll need
1. Heimdall for Linux
2. CWMR from thewhisp
3. A S6500/D/L/T Phone
4. USB Cable
~PREPARE YOUR PC~
Firstly, prepare your Linux PC by installing Heimdall (which is easy to install by Googling).
Secondly, download thewhisp's CWMR, preferably the cwm-6.0.3.2-jena-build-2.tar because the 6.0.3.3 don't work when I tried flashing that.
Thirdly, you are gonna extract the CWMR file and put it on your Desktop for easy reference.
~PREPARE YOUR PHONE~
Firstly, go to Download/Odin Mode (Press buttons, Home + Vol Up + Vol Down)
Secondly, when you are in Download/Odin Mode already, press Vol Up and plug in your device to your computer.
~Flashy Time~
Firstly, on your computer, copy the path of the recovery.img that you saved in your Dekstop. (SHOWN IN PICTURE)
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Secondly, start up your terminal and then type in sudo heimdall flash --RECOVERY
"paste file path" (SHOWN IN PICTURE)
Once you right click and paste, it will do its thing. Leave like that and when its ALMOST DONE, hold down your home button and both vol buttons in order to go to recovery and to prevent from being like me previously when i cant go to recovery )
