Help:: Milestone- SD card always not reading

I have a month old Milestone (GSM) which replaced my HTC Diamond. I did an OTA update to 2.1 update1 (SCHOLS_U2_02.36.0 build). Phone came preinstalled with an 8GB MicroSD card.
I have a major problem now: the SD card almost never works. Neither does any app which needs the sd card. "Sd card & Storage" settings does not open and hangs till it is force closed. It is detected on booting up the phone (Initializing SD card), but after that invariably turns to "sd card unexpectedly removed" if I try to access it (through File Manager/Settings/ASTRO/anything else).
System occasionally asks me to format the sd card saying "corrupted sd card", i have done it only once. Every other time I turn the phone off, remove battery & sd card, reinsert both and start the phone back up. The boot up recongnizes the SD card again, but the whole cycle repeats if i try to access the sd card or use an app that requires sd card functionality.
Also, connecting the phone to my laptop and trying to read the card also results in "SD card removed unexpectedly" and the laptop hangs if I try to enter the drive.
I have not tested a different MicroSD card (not possible to for some time). I have seen many instances of this problem elsewhere on the internet, and none seem to have any resolution. XDA is my last hope.
Please help.
PS: Maybe it's related, but the Camera doesn't work either. When accessed, the camera (and the camcorder) just show up as black screens and nothing else (no menu, no settings). It has to be force closed each time.

I have a very similar experience. The funny part is the card is mounted, but not visible.
Let me explain :
1. If i try any generic app which tries to access the SD card, it says it's not there.
2. Settings>SD card & phone storage says Unavailable to everything, like if the card is not mounted.
3. Fun starts now - Ghost Commander has no problem reading and opening directories and files on the SD card.
4. if i connect the phone to computer via "Charge only" option, i have no problems to view the SD card contects via "adb shell", "ls /sdcard" commands.
I suspect that this is another of the superb Motorola firmware updates, where at least 1 thing must break, or it wouldn't be Motorola Milestone firmware.

Same here. I only have a milestone since a few days, did you guys have that problem before the latest software patch already?
At least i know now that it is not my sdcard that makes problems.. seem to be a common bug

Just wanted to add that I'm having the same problem on my Milestone running the 2_02.36 build for Singapore.
I've noticed that Astro can still see the SD card and all the 3rd party apps that write to the SD card work fine as well. It's only the built-in Android apps (Camera, Settings etc.) that don't work.

I've been researching the last 2 days and found tons of complaints about the SDCard problems, there are a few lac fixes out there, but this is where the real problem starts.
Since my SCCard unpredictable unmounts or corrputs itself constantly, it is not even possible to install open recovery because after the reboot, the sdcard causes some problems that interrupt the process of a clean install (started with the exploit downgrade). And most fixes that "might" work, require Open recovery due they are scripted for that purpose and also enable a "roll-back" this way.
However, there is a solution to it, but since Motorola Europe has announced that from Ocober 18.th they begin with the froyo rollout, I'll wait.
Anybody that still wants to give it a shot, here's how I'd go for it:
- Root the milestone with the 1-click-rooting tool
- Install a console and su as root
- push the files via adb to the sdcard and execute the according how they are set up in the .sh

Ok, here's my fix: Downgrade to 2.0, not with the vulnerability sbf, but simply download bootloader and rom from here: http://and-developers.com/sbf
Fire up RSD Lite, start phone and press d-pad, once you're there, connect phone, downgrade bootloader and os.
There are differend sbf: System and non-system. The ones that are not system files, will completely restore your phone to original. I've chosen that option, now it works flawless, no missing features or apps, except the Xing app, which i couldn't care less.

In my case the card comes back after few reboots and then keeps working until next reboot, so if it comes back i try not to run off the battery .

This was not the case with the previous software version. This thing started after the software update.
Its effing annoying because half the functionality of the phone goes for toss if the sd card is not reading!

I have tested all "official" releases for the milestone. The only one that does a good job is 2.0. No battery drain, no sdcard unmount or whatever. Of course i also checked out the G.O.T. 2.2.1 Froyo.. some awesome performance increase, but then again, if i can't get of the house without carrying my charger, because within less than 8 hours its empty, it is simply not ment as an everyday phone. So i rather stick with the older, but solid version, which btw. is a common thing in IT anyway.. trying to get of this "version-junkie" trip ;-)

FYI, 2.0 has a problem of its own too - the camera autofocus bug.

No doubt about that. Ans release bug free? I still like the os for the fact tust its young and "beta"...with a great potential. (My personal opinion)

I myself have been having this issue ever since the latest update. Lets see, i got this phone in April this year and i have been having a lot of problems with the phone. The music player and camera auto-focus bug in 2.0, for instance, and the service centre in Singapore are not helpful at all till around August when they actually employs a Manager. Customer service picked up though after that and finally in Oct, after i called up Starhub and Motorola to scr*w them up, they are willing to exchange my milestone with a new one and i updated it to SHOLS_U2_02.36.2 and thats when my sd card problem started.
So 3 weeks later, yesterday, i had enough of the sd card problem. The problem just keeps getting worse. I almost wanted to slam my phone. Back to what i tried, I have tried to restore to factory settings, change my sd card (even though i doubt its the problem), and finally found the fix.
I flash my phone with Vulnerable Recovery for my bootloader, used RSD to downgrade my sbf to SHOLS_U2_02.36.0 and it worked. Oh and for those who doesn't want to lose any data, use the service version. I used the service version and it is working fine for almost a day now. No sd card unexpectedly removed, or any error message pertaining to sd card.
This is going to be my last Motorola phone ever. Sorry about the long post =X

SD doesn't always detect and issues installing apps

Guys, I've been searching for the last couple of weeks for solutions to what I believe is a unique problem with N1, so here I am ...
Basic details of NI:
Mod: Cyanogen 6.0.0
Kernel: 2.6.34.5
Baseband: 5.08
Build: FRF91
Issue number 1: Intermittent detection of SDcard.
A few weeks ago the N1 was not detecting my SDcard. I searched the web and tried a number of solutions. What has worked for me is to shut down, reseat the SDcard and hope for the best. Sometimes this would work after a couple of attempts other times I'd try this over days...
So I decide to buy a new card. Kingston 16gb SDHC. I format this for FAT32 copy my files across and pop it in. It gets detected, but once again intermittently, though it is detected after a shutdown and reseat more often than the previous card.
Now here is the uniqueness of my issue which I haven't been able to find in other places.
Even is the card is detected by the system and loads all the applications that are installed on it, if I go to 'manage applications' and select an application the 'total', 'application' and 'data' fields under storage show "computing..." and this doesn't change no mater how long I leave it. This is also the case for 'cache'.
Also, if I go to 'sd card and phone storage' it show the total space and available space no problems, but if I try to unmount it stalls then crashes out of settings.
I have no trouble reading either card on my Windows 7 machine.
Does anyone have any ideas on this particular issue?
Issue number 2 is that I can't update my apps ... it always gets stuck on 'installing ...'. I suspect however that if I sort out issue 1, issue 2 will also be solved.
Any help is much appreciated, as I'm rather at my wits end...

Ok, so an update on this. I've done a bit more reading, and discovered that my problem isn't so unique after all. Have tried a number of things, but nothing has worked perfectly for me yet.
I've wiped the card, reformated and the phone now detects it.
When I copy across all the files again the card stops being detected again.
So then I delete everything but the .android_secure folder and it still doesn't detect.
Does anyone know what app could be causing this?

I've seen some success by formatting the SD with a specific PC based program. Formatting from the phone gives mixed results.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the name, so you'll have to search...

So after tinkering around with this issue a little bit, I ended up deleting the .android_secure folder.
After this everything seemed to work again. I could install apps and the card was being detected just fine.
Now, a couple of weeks later, I am having the same issues and it is again driving me nuts.
Does anyone have an idea of what the app is that is causing this problem?

I have the same problem since yesterday!
Btw I have rooted stock Froyo FRG83D, locked bootloader.
I think the app I installed yesterday was SetCPU. I don't know if the problem appeared because of that..
My apps installed on the SD Card are not recognized but I can see my photos in the Gallery which are stored on the SD Card as well! WTH!
Also I cannot install anything from the market..
Any solutions anyone?!?

I think what is screwing up the apps is using CM's ability to move apps to the SD card.
I have reinstalled all the apps using Titanium and have only moved those that you can natively. Will see how this goes.

I’m new in Nook color. I have just bough nook color and an 16GB SD card with Gingerbread 2.3.3 Mod version Phiremod Nook 6.3 Build No. GRI40.
I have not any problem for 1st time booting, but afterthat market wont work, after several cache & data clear up market is back to normal. Then another problem has been found,
1) Internet connection is really slow. My wi-fi setting is set to WEP security (if i change it to W2K or something else it will not detect my wifi), signal is excelent, but sometime i even cannot get into google,I think there problem with the software and connection, seems the nook is very slow also even when i click a thick box it will take around 2-3 minutes to response. What will be the possible issue?
2) When I want to reboot or powering off the Nook another problem has come, the nook wont reboot neither powering off, it hangs and freakin’ me out and i must hard force the power button to kill the nook. What is the cause?
3) Nook shall come with 8GB internal storage, but why in the Storage it is mentioning the total space is 0.93GB and available space is 874MB. And my SD card(16GB) is only 2.24GB instead of 16GB.
Please help me all expert.
I start love Nook the first time i’ve seen it, but after getting some confusion with this I start to thing twice to have rooted tablet..please help me to start enjoying my nook.

There's the thread for Phiremod. I would guess some of your issues might be addressed in that thread.
You aren't going to be able to change the partition sizes without destroying your non-SD card build (presumably the stock Nook ROM).

My recommendation is forget the Phiremod, all that does is remove you from the official CM7 update paths and in turn you get no real benefits, no support and lagging updates and fixes.
Install the latest CM7 nightly(177) onto your emmc, most, if not all of the issues you are having should go away once you've done that.

I hope you didn't pay much for that card, because if you want to fix any of these things, you will probably have to start from scratch and make your own, anyway.
Your performance issues very likely relate back to that card. It may be that they used a poor card in the first place, but even if they used a decent card, sometimes SD installs just don't come out quite right and need to be rebuilt from scratch.

That's how newer NCs are partitioned. There's a 5GB partition that you can't see where Barnes & Noble apps, books and magazines would install, and only 1GB for you to sideload. The remainder is used for boot files and recovery images. You can reverse that partitioning so you have 5GB available using the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371

You may be able to claim the remaining space using a program like EASEUS Partition Manager, assuming it was in fact a 16GB card. If you look at the card in EASEUS on a PC and see a lot of unallocated space, you can extend the partition named /sdcard to take up that space. If the card was set up that carelessly, though, it's very likely the people who made it didn't know what they were doing and the card will never perform well.

Also instead of WEP use WPA2 for best results.

I bought the card less then 50$, the brand is Paxxxxt. The seller has inform me that there might be an issue with the card, because the speed is too slow. He said from thousand of his cards there are 30 something are having this problem, so he send me another card (sanxxxk), it will arrive within next week, hope it will work.

I bought a memory card from ebay its transcent sdhc 16 gb class 4.
when i am trying to copy big data to my memory card via data cable my pc hangs and doesnt allow me to do anything and then my cell phone also hangs.
but when am trying to copy data to memory card via another cellphone its working fine..
I am using MIUI XT Final V2.
Can anyone tell me whats wrong??

Try to transfer data thoruhg a card reader. Especially if it is a large amount like 3-5g of music. Moving data through the phone is fine in short bursts but I always founf it to be cleaner and faster through a card reader.

Speaking of memory cards, how did you fix your 32gb Woodrube? I have 3 sd cards failing on me and not sure why. They work for a bit then fail again.

Man it sucked big time for so long but I was able to find a corrupted file on there and had to use File Assassin from Malwarebytes.org to delete it. Even then, it didn't want to go. I reformated it full fat and used the "slow" process that filled in 1's and 0's. It happened when I went to CM6.1 the first time.
Think I may have borked it myself during an bad install and then it would never work correctly. I use MiniTool Partition Wizard (I don't like GParted b/c you lose all your data. With MTPW, your FAT data is still there when you want to resize yout ext/swap) to set my partitions and once that was done, I would try to reinstall that same file. Wasn't until I figured out that it was causing so many problems, but it was the only ROM that would boot up. If I used it and then wanted to go to Wanhu or HM's ROMs (this was a few months ago), when I would restore those, it would break the partition and would never boot up. Wouldn't loop in the traditional sense where the animation would run then disappear and the run again, it would just continually run.
Not saying it is CM6 or anything like that, I just think I got a bad download or operator error and a corrupt file hit my card. I just reformatted to full Fat and no partitions and it works fine (for now). It was only the partitions that would not work. I would run MZor sd-ext test and it was horrible with all the errors it showed. I had been deciding to format full fat anyways and stay away from partitioning (I don't and never have used swap), and I have to say I think it is really better that way. I only have about 50+/-apps so my Dalvik isn't even close to filling up and half of them I don't even use.

OK thanks buddy! Looks like thats what I might have to do. So what would be the best method to move Apps over then with just fat32? If you have any advice for me I sure would appreciate it

On my wife's XT, i am just using the native Froyo app2sd (settings>manage apps>select app>move to sd [there is also an app in the market called Move2sd enabler that will move "non-movable" apps to the SD card]). Don't move any widgets to SD card though. On my Vibrant, I have't moved a single one over to the SD yet and have 1.5g left on internal.
FYI if you get an error when downloading an app from the market and it says,
"App not installed
Unknown Error-18"
Don't freak out, it is a known Froyo bug. All you have to do is plug your phone into your computer and look in the .Androidsecure folder (make sure you have show hidden folders checked on your PC) and delete this file.

Sorry for the thread hijack but it is kind of a fix for some SD problems.

the original microSD that came with the phone is kinda shady
mine had some problems, had to format it twice to get it working right
a friend of mine even worse, after a few use it died completely

applications on sd card cannot be found

booting sd card with latest stable 7 release.
Just turned on my nook in android mode and all my applications on sd card are not accessible.
I have rebooted numerous times and used recovery and still no apps. When I open settings, I can see the apps on the sd card tab but cannot move them back to phone or clear them.
Don't know what happen? Any solutions to get my sd card applications working again? My nook will boot up fine with sd card but lost all the sd card apps.
The sd card storage is strange. I have a 16bg and now says .89mb used and 1.0gb free. it used to say 13.? free.
Any Thoughts?

I just started a new thread a few minutes ago describing a similar problem. I lost the ability to browse apps after installing a couple of them from App Brain. I know the apps are there, but I have no way to browse and launch them.
Wish I could say I have an answer for you...

I'm not sure of the exact cause of your problem. But i had a similar issue recently on CM9. Changing to a different launcher fixed the basic problem, and then when i switched back to my preferred launcher, the sd card apps were still visible. Hopefully this will work for you too. I ended up switching to a different launcher permanently.

This can happen if you swap what cm7 views as the sdcard, from removable to emmc. Check your settings within Cyanogen/Applications. If use internal storage is checked, then the system is looking for your SD apps on the wrong SD.
Or you could have a corrupted card. I hope it is the first option. Hope this helps.
Looking at your memory fluctuations, I bet the above is right. That is the available memory amount for a nook out of the box without the customizable repartition zips. Which are awesome. At the moment, you have all your memory allocated to data, which is totally unnecessary, and a waste of perfectly usable forage.
