According to this site https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c they plan to upgrade Droid 3 and Milestone 3 to ICS. Ok, it's not for every country, but when we have a official ICS, it will be easy to extract codecs and make the camera work.
So far they have it only listed as "Evaluation and Planning" and state that devices that make it to "Evaluation and Planning" may never make it beyond that stage.
While it's good to see the Droid 3 listed as being evaluated....there is no definitive statement of ICS coming for it officially at this time.
This just means it hasnt been ruled out, from the looks of it we will have to wait a while. Hashcode will probably have a stable ics rom before Motorola releases ics

Dont know why everyone is saying its coming for droid 3
As long as ICS comes to Bionic, it shouldn't be hard to port it to the Droid 3. As far as I'm concerned, the Bionic is a Droid 3 plus LTE and minus a keyboard.

It will be just as hard as it is now if the bootloader is still locked..

And the kernel? What about that.....when the Bionic gets ICS it will also be getting a new kernel. The Droid 3 plus LTE minus keyboard description is fine while both are running Gingerbread and the GB kernel. What happens when the Bionic is ICS kernel based and the Droid 3 is still on a GB one?
I hope Motorola upgrades the Droid 3 to ICS. It's the only way we'll see a real and fully functional version. Otherwise we'll have to rely on hacks and work-arounds to run ICS on top of our GB kernel.

I think they mean from Motorola's standpoint its not much more work to get ics working on the d3 after they get it on the bionic. Basically they take the work they do porting ics to he bionic strip out 4g and webtop, and make sure the keyboard works.

By the time they develop it for the droid3 the droid3 will be outdated..oh wait it already is with the d4,duh..moto wont unlock the bootloader as it opens up the dumba** clause..
meaning that would allow anyone to mess with all parts of their phone and when they mess stuff up they will look at moto for a fix or replacement.
so we will continue to do what we have always done..buy our new phone for the moment and hope someone doesn't smoke enuff herb that they will become a dev for our beloved phone for the moment and help us keep it current..yeah..
The issue is the bootloader. If it wasn't locked up, Hash's job would be cake. My prediction for Moto ICS...this time 2013.

you need to know what "Evaluation & Planning" means to motorola. It always means you get nothing. So be not too optimistic.

Of-course True. There seems a lot of delay from Motorola for ICS upgrade. Droid 3 was the best device that Verizon offered in last July-August. Now its one of the best. If an ICS official build with unlocked bootloader lands then it will surely win a lot of hearts...
However hashcode has released a ICS port from CM9.. I am happy with that though...
Don't forget, Google officially owns the Motorola cell phone division now.
"Evaluation and planning" only means they have not ruled it out yet. It's like you see light in the tunnel, but you don't know if that's the other end, or just the oncoming train..
LMAO D4 being also under "evaluation and planning". I was assuming they are past this step for this "fresh" droid. Won't be surprised if either doesn't make it. For the time it takes to perform stage 2 (development), D3 will be completely outdated..

Ignoring what this says, Motorola has previously made it clear that the Bionic, Razr series, and Droid 4 would definitely get ICS. They have said nothing about any other Verizon phones - that it will or will not get the update. I noticed that the Chinese version of the Razr is getting ICS in Q2, so that's probably a good sign for the Razr.
"Evaluation and Planning" probably means that Moto has no idea how long Verizon will take to test and approve the update. Or they are still waiting to hear which bloatware apps that they'll need to put on.

Verizon has absolutely nothing to do with the evaluation stage Motorola performs.
Where Verizon gets involved is stage 4 testing. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Also, neither Motorola nor Verizon or any other operator that matters, has interest in you using your phone for 2 years or more and not buying new one. They want to sell you new phone as often as possible. $$ is all that matters here. Nothing personal.

Right, and neither does AT&T on the Atrix. My point is - and it is a guess (notice that I said probably) - is that Verizon's part of approving an update is too unpredictable for Motorola to firmly commit to even a quarterly estimate date for the phones on Verizon that they have already said that they will update - the Bionic, Razr series, and Droid 4.
I tend to agree on that timeline. Froyo and Gingerbread updates had a similar lag time for Droid X, Droid Eris and Droid 2. If you think Moto is slow to upgrade, you ought to buy an HTC and *wait* eternally for anything more than hotfixes for security and battery drain issues.
Whoever is saying that Verizon has nothing to do with the schedule of OS upgrades is being naieve. Verizon is undoubtedly Moto's biggest consumer mobility customer. I'd call Moto's share of VZ's cellphone lineup at 50%, far ahead of HTC, Apple, RIM, Samsung, LG, etc. If the President of VZ called up Moto Mobility on Monday morning and asked for an ICS build for every capable Moto device, Moto would step up. In the real world, however, software planning and testing take most of the development cycle time. I would bet good money that ICS has been compiled against Moto's major hardware configurations for months, but the builds aren't fully tested for security, compatibility, and stability. With Google taking ownership, Google might have done the heavy lifting porting-wise for Moto already as a sign of good will and support. The crucial element is testing. Nobody wants to be the guy who pushes out upgrades that break or hobble handsets and generate complaints and bad press for VZ.

Hey guys, I am currently the owner of a Samsung Charge with a cracked screen. While still functional, its a little annoying. I am thinking about getting a new phone off eBay as contract renewal isn't an option. While I would love a Nexus, Rezound or Razr, the prices are way too high. I noticed the bionic is reasonable at $200-250 on ebay used. Seems like the only reasonable LTE dual core actually. How is the bionic? Sounds like people like them, community pretty strong with the development of ROMs? Any reasons to avoid it?
The Bionic is a good phone itself, crippled by a locked bootloader. Because of that Dev has slowed down quite a bit. If I were you, I'd save for the Galaxy Nexus.
Dont take my word on this, but I read somewhere that you could still use LTE phones with bad ESNs just by putting your sim card in them so maybe you can get one on the cheap.
Initially, I HATED the bionic because of the lack of development going on and that it had a locked bootloader and the wifi tethering couldnt be used even though rooted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One month later....
I absolutely LOVE the bionic! There aren't as many devs out there for it BUT P3droid and dhacker29 absolutely rock the living crap out of the phone and they work almost fulltime with it. With the 5.5.893 update manually installed(its a ***** to install if you used safestrap even once) the phone doesn't have a buzzing anymore and is fast and smooth! I came from being a hardcore HTC product fan(see name) and I don't honestly mind the bootloader being locked right now as Blur is actually nice.
My suggestion... Buy the Bionic, learn about it and enjoy having a phone that is able to keep up with new phones(nexus and razr) without overclocking or kernal swapping. The sheer knowledge of the devs and the ingenuity that they exhibit is MORE THAN ENOUGH to keep me with this phone for several more months. Once the bootloader is unlocked, it will be a contender for the next year or so.
P.S. The 5.5.893 update actually gets rid of headphone buzzing and the data drop issue!
As someone who has owned both Samsung and Motorola handsets, there is no comparison when it comes to build quality. The last Samsung I had, I retired it early because I had to. It was literally cracking and falling apart and I am not rough with my phones. My last Motorola (OG Droid) I retired it because I wanted to go to 4G and it still is being used on a daily basis today. I just hope that all of the people who went for the GNex are still as happy with it 6 months from now. I'm pretty sure that I will still be happy with my Bionic. JMHO.

Go to droidbionicroot.com. It is a great resource for the Bionic including wireless tether. The guy shows you how to do different stuff via you tube video. I played a coulple of games of Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360 with it. I had no lagging issues.

I see brand new Razrs on Craigslist for $300 all the time. Comes down to preference and whether you want to shell out the extra $50. I think the Razr is a little bit better build quality but the internals are all but identical. Running current firmware they're both reliable, quick phones. I prefer daylight visibility and a swappable battery to the AMOLED and slightly more rigid frame. YMMV.

On ebay the Razr is going for $400-500, $300 would be a steal. Anyway, I got the bionic, was able to pick one up for $230 including the car dock and extended battery. I am sure its better than a Samsung Charge with a cracked screen.
I had VZW trade me a razr for my bionic because of 4 diff devices having the same problem with connectivity. Other than that I loved it, good solid phone. Invert I got past the Pentile screen which isn't that bad as others say it was like my dx on steroids. I'd still have it if nor for my problems with it, but like others say price wise might as well look at a razr. Whatever feels best

If you enjoy tinkering with your phone, I would advise against the Bionic. The locked bootloader sucks, and I don't see it being unlocked anytime soon, if ever. Although there is some dev support, it's not much. Motorola has great build quality, but as long as they keep locking their phones down, I don't think I'll be buying anymore of their products. The Nexus has massive support, already, and the Rezound got unlocked, today, so expect to see dev support take off for that. If I were you, I'd stick it out with the Charge until you can afford one of those.
Edit-Sorry, I missed your post about getting it.
I just came over from using a charge. The charge has a better screen but the bionic is so much faster and more reliable. The charge did best for me with stock roms. Every custom rom i tried there was something wrong with it. So now that i have the bionic i took the latest ota update and i rooted it. Couldnt be happier. It was a good purchase as i sold my charge for 200 and got a mint bionic for 215 on swappa.

I've had the bionic since release. When the droid razr and galaxy nexus came out and all the devs moved, I was disappointed and pissed off. But after enabling webtop2sd and webubuntu along with dhacker's fabulous rom, I think it's safe to say that I'll be staying here for the next 2 years. Droid razr and galaxy nexus may be newer phones but they are both missing either the sdcard storage or the external battery. The Bionic has it all!

If you are a Sam's Club member (or know someone who is) you can get the Bionic for $120.00 with the Renew/Upgrade option or $50.00 with the Add More Lines to My Account option. But if you buy it as a Replacement Device, it'll cost you $570.00. I bought mine from them about end of October for $150.00 and added a line to my wifes' account. They have come down since then.
Hope this helps.
Tony
I recently came from the Fascinate which had a solid dev community, but the device was crippled with its lack of RAM. I am very happy with my Bionic on stock rooted. The screen isn't as vibrant add the SAMOLED but the device itself is fast and it has a ton of features. The build quality is far better than the Fascinate and hopefully the Droid branding will mean quicker updates (even though we are still on 2.3.4).

I had the Bionic for nearly a year and was pretty happy with it except for the bootloader issue. Flashed the ICS leak and it was like a brand new phone. But for some reason it started having data drop issues. I couldn't live with that. So after my third Razr replacement they gave me a HTC Resound. Having a phone with an unlocked boot loader for the first time has been a real eye opener. I happily bode Motorola goodbye. (they are liars anyway with the empty promise of unlocked bootloaders on their devices. To date they still have not honored their promise.) The Razr was a dog. No battery life and majordata drop issues.
So I am a HTC fan now. So far so good. Hopefully this phone will last a while. I don't plan on renewing my contractwith big red so I can keep my unlimited plan. Don't need the newest phone just data with options.

The bionic is a GREAT phone! 1.2Ghz dual core (rated at 1Ghz but the ICS update bumps it up .2) 1GB DDR2 RAM. Don't worry about the locked bootloader, they have a work around figured out on that now (its called Kexec) and dhacker29 is developing CM10 (Jellybean 4.1) for the bionic right now. I have used the alpha version and it is smooth as butter. It is alpha so there is a few bugs but it will be a usable daily driver eventually and that is what the SGS3 and Nexus is running (Jellybean). I have used the Samsung Charge before and the Bionic is leaps and bounds ahead of that phone. If you keep it stock on ICS (the official update is out soon or you can run the leaked version for the time being) or load roms it truly is the best bang for the buck out there in the 4G world. There's a good reason why this is the phone I chose to use. My $0.02
this thread is 9 months old, y'all
It looks like the Motorola Droid Bionic has reached the end of its life. I was looking on the Verizon Wireless website shop Smartphones and noticed that it is no longer listed. It looks like Verizon Wireless is no longer selling the phone. Hopefully we will still be able to get an official version of ICS sometime in Q3 of this year if Motorola sticks to there word. Are there even any active developers or ROM's for this great phone?
Try google, search these forums, etc. Three ics leaks so far, close to full ota many believe. Lots of development now. Ics is what bionic should have been. It is awesome.
Isn't the Bionic just a fatter RAZR? I figure Verizon asked themselves why they were selling two same phones and dropped the older one. Either way I can't wait for ICS
Why wait for official release. Jump on the band wagon with the leak version. Been running .2233 for 2 days and it is smooth and sweet. No issues.
Also yes the Razor is just a thinner Bionic with .2 MHz more processor speed.

The News folks say that the market is too fragmented. HTC and Moto have release a bunch of models that are pretty much the same. It is claimed that customers become confused and opt for a company that has fewer choices.
Sales are down so they are looking to cut manufacturing cost too.

Well if you're going from 3G to 4G i'd say it's not any different but faster XD. With the new ICS coming out your Bionic will be different. Not sure how you get bored with a phone after 2 months. I've had mine sometime after launch and with the new ICS Leak it's like a whole new phone. I am not sure what you're looking for especially if you're looking at a phone with near specs. If after 2 month you're bored of it obviously the phone wasn't meant for you. ICS brought more life out of the phone for me. As stated above I intend on keeping this phone for years especially with VZW's so called shared plans. Almost all VZWs phones have a locked bootloader. Hopefully Hashcode gets us the ability to load custom kernels then that's when the fun begins.
I find the bionic to be as good as a nexus with the leaked ics. Then again I prefer stability and sticking to a rom for several months at a time unless there's major bugs
So personally id keep the bionic as there really aren't any huge upgrades out there.
Unless you love a amoled screen but I really like the display on the bionic as I can make out things in sunlight

There aren't really any phones out with more horsepower than the Bionic - with dual core and a gig of ram it can run any Android flavor just fine.
I'm curious - what is it that "bores" you with the Bionic? What feature would you be looking for?
Not meaning this to be snarky - but seems to me if you're "bored" with your phone you have waay too much time on your hands. Start developing with it if you have free time - us regular users will love you for the work!

ICS for the Bionic is practically done. With the Droid4 getting ICS this week, I would have to gander that we are mere weeks away and probably next in line.
we should get it soon since 238 is very very good
IMO this is commonly refereed to as "Trimming the Fat"....and this is a good thing IMO. Motorola will also drop from this past years 28 phones to only a handful, as it should be....i mean really the Bionic and RAZR were almost the exact same phone, either the Bionic should have just been canceled or the RAZR delayed and given better hardware.
In addition, if you read the full article you'll see that Google also laid off 40% of the VP's of Motorola. A lot of these guys made the dumb choices that got the company into the mess its in today.
Going forward, Motorola's new strategy will be only a few devices every year which will reduce the labor needed to develop, maintain and test new features/releases.
Sounds like Google learned something from HTC and Samsung and is going to stick to a few phones instead of a lot of phones. Samsung has the galaxy series and HTC has the One series. This should speed up the update process somewhat as they will have less devices to update. They will still have their low priced options but this should cut down on how many high end devices they release and have to update.

I hope this is good news for consumers.
Have we all forgotten the terrible firmware that was released with the phones? I can imagine the service provider data feedback must have helped those heads role.
Nothing is wrong with having multiple models, what is wrong is not being able to make it obvious to the customer why they should purchase a particular model.
Lastly we would need to know the production volumes and production line capacities to get a handle on the value of having multiple models; with the downswing in orders folks tend to loose their jobs especially the folks that were beating the drum to turn on any new product.
I think some "restructuring" is certainly in order.
I hope the fewer devices thing, while a good idea doesn't lead to all phones being Razr variants with no removable battery. Or worse, Nexus like phones with no SD card. I got the Bionic over the Razr and Nexus because I loath built in batteries and need all the storage I can get, love the flexibility of an SD card. So sad to see these features becoming less common and on poorly supported devices like the Bionic.
Next phone? Likely a Galaxy S3, removable battery? Check. SD card? 64GB compatible even. Running ICS? Yep. Jelly bean immanent? Yep.
Google better shake things up over at Motorola, I've loved my bionic, but damn Motorola has sucked at marketing and supporting it and the Razrs do nothing for me.

Well, as messed up as Motorola/Verizon's handling of the Bionic is, it's nothing compared to the disaster the LG G2x on T-Mobile was. I'm not a violent person, but I have rarely had such rage against a device/pair of companies. The G2x makes a nice media player, just don't try using it as a phone, at least not on a T-Mobile network. Completely dysfunctional.

They're both practically the same phones except the Razr is thinner and has ICS. So I'd go with the Razr
Bionic has ICS too just not OTA. The leaked builds for the Bionic is a higher version number then the ICS version on the Razr. Not sure if that is of importance. Correct me if I'm wrong. The Razr's screen is a higher resolution then the Bionic though (1280x720). Both good either way. Let us know what you chose

The Droid Razr has the same basic screen as the Bionic (540x960 for both), and mostly the same hardware. With the impending ICS leak, I would suggest the Bionic, mainly because you can get an extended battery for it, which is much better than the stock battery or the non-removable of the Razr. If it's the Razr Maxx however, it's got the bigger battery, so I'd go for that.
Go Bionic:
Replaceable batteries!
I have both and still love my Bionic...swapping batteries just feels right, ya know....Amazon has stock Bionic batteries for between 3 and five bucks!
But to each their own...Bionic, that is!

I would have lost my left arm... I could of sworn the Razr had higher resolution. Linuxgator is correct that the resolution is the same. The Razr does have a super AMOLED display while the Bionic's is a TFT so the Razer still has the edge.
I traded my Bionic for a RAZR. Bionic was a good phone, but once you hold them both in your hands you'll want to make the switch.
My two closest friends have a RAZR and a Maxx. I don't think you can go wrong between the RAZR and Bionic, but I definitely benefit from the extended battery I have in my Bionic.
But the difference between ICS and GB is night and day, so if you're not willing to put a leak on there, the RAZR may be better for you (though ICS is seemingly impending for the Bionic).
I've read many complaints from Razr owners not being able to watch online videos once they got their ICS update, and some of the people are pretty mad since one day they could and then the next they couldn't.

I think thats a Adobe Flash issue and all Android users will have issues with that on ICS. works for some, doesn't for others. Adobe will not support it past 4.0.x which means it will NOT be made available on JB. That puts Androids back in the same unfortunate feature lacking category as the iPhone.
Those same exact issues are on the Bionic with ICS. All you need to do is sideload Flash (there's a link in the RAZR forums) and it will work perfectly. All flash video works fine on my RAZR.
Considering not everyone can sideload flash on the ics leak for the bionic and have it work, I'd be willing to bet that not every razr will be able to sideload it and have it work also.

Try it like in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855735 - uninstall clear data for Flash and clear your cache, uninstall whatever version you have, then add the version posted. It will work.
I am completely pleased with my Bionic and the high price I paid for it when it was released. HAHA however if you sought out this forum, I have a feeling you should go with the newer, slightly better supported phone. The razr will get JB first. The AMOLED screen is super nice, and the non-removable battery is considered not as nice. I would def rec the MAXX, but still my vote is RAZR.
Best of all, you will be pleased no matter what you pic. Both good phones
