I am trying to decide between the I957 or the WiFi only version, I have noticed I957 does not have that many devs on it at the moment, but the WiFi version has much more support, but it has video issues that the I957 doesn't have. Which one would be the smart choice?
what is important to you?
Well something I have read or maybe I read it wrong, but the 10.1 does not have the video issues that the 8.9 has, but aren't they the same hardware other than size?
I guess I really do not understand h.264 other than being higher quality. Saying the 8.9 will play HD, but not the best there is.
The I957 on the other hand will play everything with no problem, but how does the support outlook look on it for ROMs and such?
I957 has no ROM support at the moment. Pretty damn nice though if you overclock and root though...

Is that going to change once ICS comes out? Is it due to HC3.2 running fine as it is after being rooted and OC?

it is because no developers currently own the device. we get most of our support from the skyrocket people.
Hmm decisions, decisions...

Here is a thread that will be all about speculation..
I saw the honeycomb and it was smoking!!! What are the chances that the guys here will get it on the nook? And if yes, how it will run? Given that it only have a 800Mhz processor (1Ghz overclocked).
Looking forward for any opinions
I hope so, but that's a good bit away. Honeycomb uses on screen buttons, so our hardware button deficiencies would go away, if it were possible.
IIRC, Honey requires a 1Ghz processor. If we can get the overclocked kernels working with the five 9's of accuracy, then its possible. I really would like for there to be a way to strip out the nooks reader and shop apps for B&N so that I can keep the books and magazines that I've purchased. Thats pretty much a prerequisite for me.

There are no mandatory hardware requirements for honeycomb, but it will certainly run a lot smoother at 1ghz+

That's true and the more and more limitations are taken away as launch approaches..
I have no doubt it will run well, but also wonder if anyone will create a Nook version..

Well, this is just my opinion of course...
It will still be some time before we even see a 2.3
3.0 will not be out for a while and by the time that happens newer, faster, better, tablets will hit the market and catch everyone eye..
People may flock towards the newer tablets and leave the older ones behind..
I don't want to say it will never happen, but it is possible we won't see a 3.0 if the developers flock to newer tabs..
One thing is for sure, you will not see an official version from B&N.. I have my doubts there will even be an official 2.2 from them.
Is it bringing something amazing to the table? Haven't even bothered looking at honey just because the GUI stuff everyone likes looks ugly as hell.
Nook color was my first android device so I prefer the simple notification bar at the bottom, as well as using a taskmanager to kill/switch apps.

I hope you realize that the fine folks at Cyanogen are already working on a NC version of CyanogenMOD version 7 -- which is a Gingerbread (2.3) rom. Some of their best devs are on it, and they've even gotten it to boot already!
So, don't be surprised when you see 2.3 sooner, rather than later...

Is the wifi Tab just not a popular enough tablet to garner interest in developing ROMS or OC kernels? See a little stuff for the 3G Tabs and not much at all for the wifi Tab.
The wifi tab is still fairly new. I hope that at least one developer will take up the custom rom development.
i would think that the wifi version and the 3g version are pretty much the same the only thing that would change would be one would have 3g and the other would not. but the roms that are designed for 3g should work for the wifi i dont see why not.
Wifi version use different (or of lower spec.) cpu, graphic chip, and Bluetooth chip; so it needs quite a different rom from the 3g version.

I really hope so too. The more I browse this section and just see almost nothing for my Tab makes me kinda wish I had gotten something else. I see so many guys with their 3G tabs clocked to 1.4ghz. Jealous!!

I am really starting to feel left out of the cool kids club(GSM Tab Owners). Owning the sprint galaxy tab is like buying a mustang V6. I mean sure you have a mustang, but any ordinary ricer with a decent tune could blow you out of the water. Sure you could strap on a short air ram(rooting), or even sport tune(rooted apps), but your still no V8(Roms). Yeah I like cars a little, but I am really sad about my Galaxy tab from sprint. I had very high hopes, and they were all crushed......So Devs if you find it in your hearts........bring us some Sprint tab LOVE.
Well im running hc alpha 2.5 on my Sprint tab i think thats not to bad ,of course all thanks to spacemoose!

Your problem is that GSM technology is world wide, so you have people from all over the world working on roms.
CDMA is only in the US, so you have a much more limited set of potential developers.
Do you have a link to the rom? and does the market work?

It is in the "Android Development" section of the Samsung Galaxy Tab forums. And yes, the market works. While the GSM crowd is still getting Gingerbread ROMs/ports, we CDMA users have HC now. There are some glitches as the developer is still in the early stages, but overall, it runs, it's a great move in the right direction, and it's on CDMA first. (The dev was working on CDMA and GSM simultaneously, but the development on CDMA for whatever reason wasn't as difficult. I don't know if the GSM HC works as of now, but I know the dev. was close....)
And if you hate it that much, put it on ebay, sell it, and get a GSM.
Thanks for the info,
I don't hate the device as much as sprint.....and the way they locked up all the goodness behind profit grubbing.

You're welcome, although I don't understand the part about all the goodness being locked up. You just have to root your tab, just like all other Android devices. Once rooted, the device, and experience, are what you make it
I have someone that wants to trade me their sprint gtab 3g (I use sprint) for my wifi 16g ipad. I have a nook color rooted running cm7 overclocked at 1300 and an evo 4g running cm7. Do you guys think that's a fair trade? I'm not a big apple fan but my wife gave me the ipad for my birthday and use it for Netflix only. I need to pull the trigger quick before this Guy changes his mind. I just want to make sure I'm not making a dopey trade.... thanks guys!

I have a question. I rooted my tab when I first got it, how did you install alpha 2.5, I have sprint and when I try it with rom mananger ,sprint is not in the recovery just att, verizon and tmobile. I tried to flash the verizon recovery, and it was a no go. It reboots into the samaung recovery. If you have a sprint tab how did you do it?
I have nothing but mad love for my Sprint Tab. Bear in mind I'm not doing nearly as much with it as you're wanting to do though. I don't have it activated with Sprint and I'm not flashing ROMs or anything on it.
If you want to make some changes to your Sprint tab, check out the informational thread I created.

I found a new love for my tab, I flashed it to 2.5 HC and it is neat again. It's buggy, but fun to toy with again........Yay Tab.
I've played with the HC 2.5 port, and it's just too slow for me. Stock, rooted with CWM (converted to ext4) seems to be the best thing out there for my uses thus far. Hoping we'll get a official gingerbread soon, or at least a functional CM7 port.. otherwise i love my tab! Sure there's not tons of roms to play with like the GSM tabs, but I'm happy with what i paid for it and my uses..
Google is expected by some to announce Android 4.1 Jellybean next week along with their Nexus 7 tablet. Besides chrome integration and a new search widget, what do you guys think will be included with this update?
Since its coded 4.1 and not 5, i expect Android ICS devices will be updated to 4.1 as it is pretty soon to updgrade hardware requirements as 1gb is pretty muh still the standard adn most ICS devices have this amount of RAM. This said, do you guys think any developers will begin porting 4.1 to our devices, even with the hardware codecs and other issues still being prevelant? Would you guys really want it like this, half built?
If this update is good, would this persuade you to upgrade to the droid4, as it will have a higher probability of having a completely working port? since it has ICS now leaked and working, and still a high end phone, when not compared to the SIII atleast.
I think our device runs fine on Gingerbread still...
It would be nice for a port but the little development we have now is already stable with gingerbread.
It was leaked that the GNex will be getting 4.1. As for us running it... I would bet large sums of money against it working right.
From RootzWiki: Galaxy Nexus to get Jellybean 4.1
Screenshot proof:
http://rootzwiki.com/uploads/monthly_06_2012/ccs-808-0-41169000-1340388367_thumb.jpg
Although this is the GSM versions pictured, it won't be tough to build it from source for the CDMA GNex before it's pushed.
4.0.3 to 4.0.4 was pushed to most if not all custom ICS roms. I don't see why 4.1 would not follow, unless there are MAJOR changes which from what I've read there really aren't. I would expect Gummy and AOKP to bring it to their roms in the near future.
However I highly doubt it will change how we stand with our current issues and most likely may cause some new ones.
Ehhh gingerbread runs ok on our phones in my opinion, ics was ALOT faster for me. Im using elcipse right now and its fast but my benchmakrs with ics were much higher, os ran smoother too.
That is a good point by the poster above, so that is high hopes of seeing a port even though I know it wont bring any more features than we already have, except the minor changes to the OS. It will be fun to test though. In around 12 hours we will have better knowledgge of what Jwlly Bean has to offer
I'm sorry but what's the point in upgrading if we won't have a proper ICS on D3 anyway?

I'm working on a kexec based bootloader bypass on droid3. It's coming along and the kernel say half boots. Once it is going I think jellybean is a real possibility. Probably will just skip ICS all togeather.

Oh really
So if you were able to get custom kernels working does that mean you could use something like a modded Bionic ICS kernel (since its very similar hardware) or would a kernel have to be made from scratch.
The Nexus S is getting an official Jellybean update, and it only has 512MB of memory, just like the Droid3.
I read that memory limitations are what prevented devices like the NexS and the Droid3 from getting properly updated to ICS. I also read that Jellybean probably has looser system requirements than ICS, due to optimizations.
I do hope we can get JellyBean, either officially or otherwise. I'd love to have Google Now and I'm only halfway through my two-year contract.

Correct. Also he has said that we will be able to get Jellybean. I would imagine with all he has learned this year, he can probably get it fully running now. Hwcodecs may be the showstopper though...again. In theory a workaround may be available since we have a custom kernel.

512 is enough but I think the issue has something to do with RAM being shared with the GPU so there is less avaliable, I get something around 330MB as total RAM when adding the 2 numbers under running services. My Droid 3 running stock 2.3.4 with bloat frozen is using around 250 MB. My Touchpad with CM9 and a full 1GB of RAM idles at around 300MB of RAM used, and its going to be less conservative on RAM usage since its got a GB.
The point is I don't think a CM9/10 ROM will be much worse than a bloated GB ROM as far as RAM usage goes. I really wish we had some more RAM, but I could see CM9/10 being a daily driver sometime in the future. The rest of the hardware in this phone is still pretty decent and CM should be no problem for it as long as the team can get some drivers working.
I recently purchased this 8.9 tablet and extremely surprised how lacking the developer community is, i come from the desire hd and im updating my phone weekly sometimes even faster, but i came here and aokp/cm are apparently buggy and the threads are outdated with some even months old!
Im used to seeing pages go into 1000 pages, but here theres not even 6!
Anyway.... its a surprising change and im skeptical if its worth even rooting at all! Any recommendations?
All the ICS Roms pretty much have the same bugs and will, until the Official Update. I've tried all of them and they're definitely faster and more customizable than stock obviously but if you're looking for a 'fully functional' Rom, either try Overcome (which is a really good HC Rom) or stick with stock for another month or two. I went back to stock, rooted, removed the bloatware and apps that I wouldn't use and I'm pretty happy with that setup until something more stable comes along.

+1 instead of complaining be thankfull of what you have if you cant contribute to anything then just keep that to yourself because that wont help. .
Yes, definitely be thankful. Check out the gtab 7 plus community. Now that's lacking!
Anyhow I'll suggest kallt kaffe's cm9 june 8 build. The latest build I've read has some issues with the device powering itself off. All in all, I've been very impressed by kallt kaffe's cm9 build/ports!
Stock ROM is ok until ICS update. Just flash the motley's kernel, overclock it to 1.4-1.5 ghz and you will be very surprised by the speed of it. Also benchmark scores will increase significantly and touchwiz will be smooth.

Agreed. But instead of stock, I recommend Overcome 3.2.
Used HC stock rom for 2 days and it was very laggy. Went straight to the ICS ROMS which are much better. Didn't test Overcome 3.2 though. Performance between AOKP and CM9 are pretty much the same but CM9 has MUCH better batterylife. Would definitely go for CM9 which is official so you can flash nightlies all week long
