This is probably a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway. I've noticed my phone draining lately (or maybe it's not, I'm not quite sure what the battery life used to be xD), and I recently overclocked my phone to 1.25 GHz (my profile on SetCPU is ondemand), does overclocking affect the battery that much?
I run Froyo (rooted with wifi fix and the 1.25 GHz kernal)
I'm using an ultra low voltage kernal at 1ghz and haven't noticed a difference, if anything it seems like it's better.
I guess it probably largely depends on what kernal.
I've been overclocked for 4+ months. The first month before I rooted, I was getting around 16-18 hours on a full charge at the stock 550 speed. After I rooted, a lot depended on the rom (lesser so) and the kernel (more so). I think the best performance I got was on ChevyNo1's SS rom (2.1) with one of his kernels ... 40+ hours overclocked conservatively at 800. My first shot some time back with CyanogenMod got me 3 hours with the early Bekit kernels but the past several versions up through 5.0.8 I was getting about 30 hours clocked at 800 with a jdlfg kernel. Now on Froyo I'm getting close to 30 hours again conservatively at 800-1000 ... which on a 2.2. rom is more like 1200+ since its faster.
So, in short, my battery life has significantly improved while running faster than stock. But no 2 Droids are identical in terms of how a rom and/or kernel perform. With 2.1 roms my Droid seems to like jdlfg's kernels, while on 2.2 the P3droid kernels do good. But that's what I found out via a lot of trial and error, not anyone's post saying "You must try ______'s kernel (or rom) as its da bomb!"
I would like to include that the post above by "cvhovey" provides some valuable information that might interest you and suggest anyone untreated in this thread to read that post.
Using an application like SetCPU you can throttle down the processor speed when the screen is off, this reducing heat and gaining better battery life. This doesn't mean you will get better battery life if you use your phone all day and never turn the screen off. But is totally worth it because u feel like I'm getting awesome battery life, plus an amazingly fast phone because SetCPU will overall me to my personal preference of 1100mhz on demand.
The answer to your actual question depends on how well you set up your phone preferences according to what benefits you the most, and what method of adjusting processor speed. I only mentioned one here, there are mire ways than just an APK.

1+ on that. But how one uses SetCPU can also make big differences, such as which governor is selected. SetCPU at 400-1250 with the Performance governor will essentially run at its highest speed all of the time (if I'm correct), whereas with the Conservative governor will ramp up from 400 to 1250 at a slower pace, or at a faster face with Ondemand.

Were you using profiles in any way? A specific ROM? I've had similar a experience with certain ROMs (specifically UltimateDroid).
Best guess is that it just didn't play nice with the modded kernel.

It will be worse, but if you do UV it will last a bit longer...
Battery life will go down, but its by such a small amount, you wont even notice it(depending on how much you OC it)
and stable OC values will be different for every phone since all processors are not made equal. For example, my max stable overclock is at 1.2ghz, but my friend was stable at 1.4 with undervolting by 100.
You really just need to play around with it and find what works for you.
If you really want a solid stable number, im pretty sure every captivate I've seen can go up to atleast 1.2 ghz.

That is very untrue. I read an article (for the life of me can't find it) that overclocking is actually better for battery life. I have in fact had better results on my LG Optimus V with overclocking at 806mHz (highest stable clock setting) than with 600mHz (standard). LeslieAnn (Harmonia dev) linked to the aforementioned article in one of her posts. If I find the link I will post it.
I've only OC a couple of times but 1200Mhz should be stable for the majority of phones out there. The most I've got out of my phone was 1440Mhz on MIUI with Glitch kernel, while my friend was able to hit 1600Mhz with same rom and kernel. It took me quite a bit to figure out what voltages for what steps etc to get it to work well so if you do not feel like tinkering with it for a long while I wouldn't try to push your OC too high.
Battery life doesn't usually decrease unless you over volt. That being said most Galaxy S will get 1.2ghz-1.3ghz on stock voltage. Usually a good idea to undervolt most "steps" except the high clocks (1ghz+) but this varies on phone, rom, kernel, etc.

ohh... i thought that said undervolt... but over clocking as well will make it decrease some.
If you ran faster you would burn more energy in the same amount of time. (over clocking)
If you reduced the weight of your legs or gravity you would burn less energy. (under volting).
Most people dont notice battery drain when overclocked because the processor speed doesnt run full speed all the time. it governs to different speeds for what it needs to do.
go stock speed and play a game till it drops to a percentage.

less time. guaranteed.
just sitting at the homescreen and flipping through your app drawer and using face book wont kick your phone into high gear, with stock or overclocking. you will never notice.

I have my phone and nook's clocking speed set at the same for min/max settings. I play a mean game of RUA and AirAttack HD. I've in fact timed my battery life on standard clock settings and my overclocking. While overclocked, my nook lasted 10 minutes longer than at standard speeds (while playing AirAttack HD, which has intense 3D graphics). And you might suggest I undervolted, but I never touch that stuff. My volting stays where it is.
Guys, I don't know but Note gets heated up a lot from the camera Side.. the battery remains cool though.. what is this?. can It be stopped. I guess your notes must have been suffering from this? any solution?

Heating ....how much...generally while charging it gets heated up. Try some google aps any of those battery savers...they have an option to show the temperature. Also are you always of Wifi...if so your screen is sure to generate heat, which is normal.
Above all if it gets heated if you are not charging and not on Wifi does it cool down ? Considering your battery charge is above 70%.

The phone heats up near the camera because that is where the CPU is located.
Running 3D games and other apps that require the phone to run at high CPU frequencies will heat up your phone.
If you want to avoid heat completely, then you need to look into Under Clocking and Under Volting.
It's simpler with a rooted phone and a tool like Rom Toolbox Pro.
Under Clocking is where you limit the max CPU frequency the phone can use.
By default the Note is limited to 1400MHz, set the maximum frequency to a lower level, e.g. 1000MHz.
Under Volting is where you limit the current the CPU draws from the battery at certain frequencies.
Make sure you do some serious reading on XDA before you Under Volt, supplying too little current to the CPU will make the phone unstable and potentially corrupt data.
The advantages of Under Clocking and Under Volting are reduced heat and better battery life.
The disadvantages are potentially poorer performance in 3D games and other intense apps, and instability if Under Volted too far.
Hope this helps explain what you are experiencing and some potential mitigation.
I had lag in some games solved this with resurrection remix and kernel M5. My question now is like a setting to have no problems with overheating am using min 300mhz ~ 1.4GHz is left with a high temperature 60 ° / 64 °(playing real racing 3) is safe?

Moving to a CM rom that doesn't have a CPU temperature throttle built in will give you faster perormance in games.
It's unlikely that you will damage the CPU with excessive gaming, but you will shorten the life of the battery. I thought I read somewhere about extreme temperature permanently changing the screen colour, but it might not have applied to the Z3c.

Heat is bad for electronics period. Phones aren't made to withstand long sessions of gaming as it does not have a decent cooling system to go along with it unlike gaming built cpus which have fans and liquid cooling to keep temps safe.
50-60 Celsius CPU temp for a phone is safe, you should get worried around the 70-75 Mark since the Phone throttle Temperature by default is around 80. I suggest playing in a well ventilated or an airconditioned room to keep those numbers down. You could also use a better governor for gaming like ElementalX or Lionheart and change it when you aren't gaming
i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)
3+32GB model.

It's very commom for any Snapdragon device to reach top clock speed when in use, download CPU-z and do a little scrolling to see that.
The lag in games you're getting is most probably because of the 3GB RAM of your variant not the CPU as SD660 can handle most mobile games with ease.
About battery life, how much SOT are you getting? RN7 should handle at least 6hrs with some heavy gaming included.
And about temperature, how much degrees is your device peaking at? Anything below 38ºC should be fine.
And lastly, about mi community......well, most people there look like VERY inexperienced users, i wouldn't take them as a parameter to prove your point.

3gb of ram is good enough for gaming unless ur playing a heavy game while on youtube and facebook at the same time. the problem with this phone is the aggressive thermal throttling, once the phone reaches 40°c the phone becomes noticeably slower.
my advice to OP is unlock ur bootloader flash some custom rom, custom kernel and root ur device until you find the performance/battery ur looking for.

Few examples: TES Blades, Fortnite, PS2 emulation.

thats my point, 3gb is enough for games as long as you dont multi task. and this phone is mid range.
im in Philippines, room temperature here is about 37° heavy games like pubg makes my phone temperature skyrocket reaching up to 45° especially with thermal mod.
btw MIUI has the worst ram management for this phone. its closing background apps like no tomorrow, but on any custom rom its actually quite decent.

Just Dont bother the hardcore mi fans, especially indonesian mi fans, i know they are jackass sometimes (well Not all of them)
Yes the firmware is really not optimize, battery usage is really inconsistent (typical not optimize firmware)
All we can do is wait for the new OTA.
Strangely the PRO variant get more updated frequently (check official mi website)
But for us indonesian, we are stuck with NON PRO version if we want to use Official waranty hardware.

Thanks for all your reply, i apreciated it. probably i will wait until miui 11 released, and if the phone still gets hot i will install custom rom and use EX kernel manager to disable input boost and limit the cpu.
for bullying in the mi community, i guess its just troll account ? or the xiaomi guy ? every thread about battery gets bullied by those person only.

not true .. i've been using PE (and revolutionX) and Havoc since mai.
After being on EvolutionX for more than a month, i switched to MIUI EU (coz i missed it) but then went back to trying havoc .. 2 weeks now ZERO problems no heat/lag whatsoever

these are very stable, miui-based custom ROMs with zero bloatware and better RAM management.
still a better ROM for people who want better performance / battery life on their xiaomi devices, but too afraid to live on the edge with AOSP ROMs.
AFAIK, that's called thermal-throttle/ing. When RN7 reach its peak performance and certain heat, to prevent overheat normally our device will slowing down its performance and it caused lags and fps drop for sure
I also encounter this problem when playing pubg even with smooth-ultra setting

and thermal throttling can be disabled by using a certain magisk module. although not recommended when ur playing for long period of time. i play max 3hrs highest temperature reached 45°c.

It happened to me, custom roms aren't good for gaming then switched back to MIUI, when I play phone gets 45 C max, my battery gives 6 hours of straight online gaming, I'm on MIUI Global 10.3.5, Evira kernel 3.8.

660 wasn't designed for battery efficiency. Still waiting for Franco Kernel, it might fix the issue. My Redmi Note 4x can last up to 10hrs SOT while my Redmi Note 7 can only reach 5hrs even with custom ROM+greenify installed.

just bought this phone since my Nexus 6p's battery died and it's really good. im constantly getting up to 10h+ of sot with normal usage.

Nope. With moderate use I barely get 7, mostly 6. I got this sot by using apps like line, wa, instagram, youtube, browsing, downloading tons of file and one match playing pubg and pes.
I reach 8 to 9 hours sot only if i using wifi and playing videos constantly, minimum social media and no gaming.
Ofc people used their phone different each others. But, im sure they are having same battery drain. People talk about this so many times and everywhere. Ur case having 10+ sot like only happen 1:10 of all lavender users.

Its true continuous gaming on this phone (with stock miui) is bad. You will get smooth gameplay only in short term, like a one match pubg. Then it will start to lag because of heat. We need to keep the phone temp as cool as possible when used for gaming to get less frame drop. Example, playing close to a fan or inside a room with air conditioner on.

Yes, thermal throttle where the main reason. Its limit cpu whenever temp -read by system- reach 43/44 degree. A temp read by system are mostly not indicate the real temp. Besides, we have clockspeed max at 2.2Ghz, making our phone faster to heats up easilly. Thats why thermal throttling the cpu in such early time. (Its ruins gameplay, isnt it? :v)
If we look inside thermal-engine.conf on lavender, it use two sensor for detection and two step for throttling the cpu. First step it will limit clockspeed by 1,5Ghz and 1,9Ghz. Second step it will limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Because the temp gap between these step are only 1°, so mostly thermal-engine will going to limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Imagine play pubg with that clockspeed, lags and frame drop will occurs oftenly.
I've seen Mi 8 Lite with the same chipset playing pubg continously without any frame drop. I took its thermal-engine configuration and compare them with lavender.
Interestingly there are specified profiles for gaming and pubg are missing on lavender. Thus, both thermal-engine are really different. A same chipset should having same thermal at least. But, this show us that lavender thermal thingy are not being optimized yet while mi8 lite does already.

Im gonna Re-Unlock my bootloader for the third times and use custom rom when they fix Hals. Till then i stay on miui hoping miuidev did an improvisation with next update.
