X server for Android - Xoom Themes and Apps

Hi guys,
I have been looking for an x server port for android since the day I bought my xoom.
Today I finally found something!
There is an application in the market called "Xvnc:X/X11 Server w VNC backnd"
I tried using it with connect bot but I keep getting the cannot open display message.
If anyone knows how to do it please share your knowledge.
Thanks in advance

When I was running Linux....
I always had to edit a file and I can't remember which file, but it wasn't the Xorg.conf. It was the file that had to do with the logon. I used KDE and it was the kde file for the logon manager, I'm pretty sure Gnome uses a similar file and even a barebones X session uses a file similar but for the life of me I can't remember what the file is.
I know that it is listed in the running services and the file in KDE was located in the file system under the kde apps area. Basically it is defaulted to not allow remote logons, but a change of the very evident line at the bottom of the config file makes the change. Sometimes you need to list which servers are allowed to connect, or which sub-networks are allowed.
Some Linux guru knows exactly which file it is and if you've been running remote X sessions it may already be set up right. But without being fresh on Linux, or knowing what system you are trying to log onto I'm sure someone else may be more help. Perhaps if you search the forum for you current flavor of Linux, (or macor whatever) for remote X connection you'll find some useful info.

I don't think the app in the market is what you want.
(You have been able to run Xvnc for ages on any android).
Framebuffer version of X (Or in an ideal world a rootless version - similar to how exceed etc works on Windows).
There is one on github but you have to compile it.

Thanks for your replies guys
@ unrandomsam
actually what I want to do is connect to university network and run x window applications through ssh just like we do on PCs.
If the one on github allows this can you please provide the name?
Thanks in advance

I've just release an open-source X server that might do what you want. It's available for free through the Android Market, details at my20percent.wordpress.com/2012/02/27/android-x-server/
Note that it's still in beta, and doesn't come with a window manager, although in theory you can run a window manager as a remote client.

mkwan

Please can you also provide the binaries in your website? Or maybe you can attach the .apk here.
I want to test your app but I don't have access to the android market.

Trying to run XEmacs using X Server over ssh. X forwarding not happening
I have X Server and Connectbot installed. Connectbot works fine for sshing into a shell, either directly or when called from X Server however I can't run XEmacs in an X window. Xemacs looks like it's running in a Terminal which is what it does if there is no X Server. When doing this between Linux systems you would X forwarding from the .ssh/config file (ForwardX11 yes). How do you do this when using Connectbot?

usb outlook sync
here's a possible usb sync solution for outlook users; it's pretty expensive though ($40, 15 day trial version), and I haven't tried it since my vouge is not activated atm.
http ://www .companionlink.com/androidusb/ol-android-usb.html
(spaces in link for newbie post)
Would this work with the vogue's usb driver?? I know i've read about issues with only parts of the usb driver being implemented.
Anyway there's a trial if anyone's interested. I'm still holding out for a "reverse tethering" solution so I can access the internet on my vogue over usb or bluetooth. There's another thread on here about that.
Great work on the guide. I'm sure I might be using it when I upgrade to a new phone in the near future
this is a great guide, thanks. i am due for upgrade around december and think that i will keep my 6900 in service- not sure as to what she will do,but ill figure out something
this gives me the opportunity to keep her at full service.
thanks again
What are you guys doing for a calendar.
Was there ever a way discovered to use the google calendar?

It would still be ideal to use the google calendar, because of the widgets it has etc.

6. The apps you backup will be backed up to /sdcard/backups/apps/
7. You can use one of the following adb commands to pull these files from the emulator:
adb pull /sdcard/backups/apps/ /AndApps
This will download all of your backed up apps to a folder on your root drive called AndApps
or
adb pull /sdcard/backups/apps/<NAME OF APK>.apk /AndApps/<NAME OF APK>.apk
This will copy a single apk of your choosing to /AndApps/

You have to place it in the directory stated by the sdk documentation for Mac:
If it works for you, post it here and I'll update the guide for mac users too. I'm not really sure what you'd do with the .ini though, perhaps a mac user can tell you that (or you could create an avd through SDK setup and upload your avd folder so I can look at it)

teamviewer for android

Ok so I just got an email that team viewer released a beta version for android. Sorry can't post the link not enough posts. My problem is that it is a direct download through the browser. When I go to install my phone will not allow me to install because it wasn't downloaded through the app market. Is there anyway around this besides rooting my phone. I have a stock phone. The teamviewer page says this
"Installation notes
You can download and install the App using your Android web browser. Due to this direct download and installation you will have to enable the following option in Android once: Settings - Application settings - Unknown sources (enable)
I cannot find this setting. I am pretty sure that I will have to root my phone to do it I just wanted conformation. Thanks in advace for your help.
Jason
hi i dont know about the samsung devices, but on htc devices its no problem. i forgot to set the setting too. but when i try to install, there was a popup coming up with a options button, to actiavt it.
but in the normal settings menu its settings-applications- check unknown sources
i tried it out, its pretty smooth. i like it
you can download the apk from their website onto pc, then install via sideload
http://teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx#downloadAreaiPhone
so the use for this would be that i can control my desktop pc from my phone? can i transfer files and such?

On the desktop versions you can. Not sure about this beta though. Been waiting FOREVER for this though. I use TeamViewer almost exclusively, but I've been using LogMeIn cause they have an Android client. But screw them now!
Oh and btw jd1peters, AT&T has disabled that option from our phones. If you want to enable sideloading, search the forums for enabling non-market apps.
No need to root. Just download the apk and install with android sideload wonder machine.

@ OP, you're awesome for bringing this up. Been waiting for this forever 8)
edit: anybody else getting the error" connection failed because your partner's Teamviewer is too old. Version 6 or higher is required to connect." There isn't even a version 6 on the desktop client.
second edit: looks like they have the v6 beta for computer clients on their website.

Yeah, you can control your desktop from your phone. IMO Teamview is one of the fastest and easiest ways to connect two computers together, all you need is the client software installed. So much less of a headache than going through and setting up the numerous VNC programs available.
As a quick note, one really important setting on the Android side is whether to optimize for speed or quality. I think it defaults to automatic, but depending what you're trying to do, you may want to set it to be one way or the other to improve performance.

[Q] windows share via mapped drive

Hi,
Is there a way to create an SMB connection to a shared windows folder and create a permanent map to say a virtual folder on the sdcard that can be accessed from within other apps?
I'd like to be able to access a windows shared folder from within other apps, specifically office apps (quick office, office pro) rather than having to use ES File explorer or the like to access the files first.
I've used google docs via the office apps which is great, but need to find a way to access local network files on a per user (login) basis for apps.
Thanks
The only thing I have found that works OK is CIFsManager.
It is a pain to launch on VEGAn 5.1 beta (I can't launch it from the app drawer, I have to go into Market or Titanium Backup to start it), but it works to map drives over so my multi-terabyte store of video and music files on my home server are "local" files.
The app mounts the shares under /mnt/cifs/<share-name> by default, but you can mount them anywhere I think. If you are not using VEGAn 5.1 beta, make sure your ROM has cifs.ko capability (can probably check the release notes for whatever ROM you are using). If you are using the stock TnT, I am not sure if CIFsManager will work, but it might work with one of the enhancement packs for the stock image.
If you hve questions you can PM me or just post back. I'll check the thread again later today.
Weird....I use VEGAn 5.1 beta and have no problems launching CIFsManager from the app drawer or the shortcut on the homescreen.

Thanks Huntar,
Works a treat, although I do get the same issue you report, unable to launch from the app drawer, have to launch from the Market. Be interesting to get to the bottom of that (i'm running vegan 5.1 beta also)
Now I need the next step, which is to provide a simple interface to get users to 'login' to their shared folders then 'logout' once finished. It's a multi user per device scenario, thus need the ability to have dynamic mapping per user...
Any ideas or developers willing to write something? Can be paid development if anyone is interested....?
Nik
That is definitely a lot of heavy lifting if the device is used my multiple people with different access rights. My scenario is simple as everyone has full access to the media server.
I don't understand the launch issue, I have uninstalled and reinstalled, tried different things, but can't get it to launch from the app drawer or a shortcut.
Good luck, I'm sure that someone here (I'm NOT a programmer) can whip up something to script out the drive mappings. You might try a more general Android development thread elsewhere on XDA, you might have better chance of finding that programmer.
You might look at Mount Manager also... seems like it might work better, as it can mount shares based on location and task (with the paid license) triggers. I just found it in the Market while I was twiddling with the CIFsManager install. I might try it myself as CIFsManager is tedious even for me.
Permission Denied
I don't mind the launch from Market (as I have the same issue, tnt lite 3.1.4, with clemsyn #77 kernel). I put in the address and share name, which I can log into my router and pull all that info as the hard drive is connected to my router, and when I try to mount I get Permission Denied?? Thoughts?

Bought it and like it so far - works better then CIFsManager but then you get what you pay for - you hope.
I installed two free apps - "es file explorer" and "androexplorer", interesting enough I had to leave user name and password blank, but then I was able to get my network drives!!! Works great!
I am trying to get mountmanager to work, but it is FC every time and seems like it will not load the module. CIFSmanger works, but I can't get mount manager to do anything but crash
TNT 4.2.3- Clemsyn Kernel
Not sure what happened, but it's running now. Some crashes but it would not even run before.

[Q] Making My Phone Compile Itself: JDK vs Apache Ant, other questions

I'm undertaking a stupid project and would like to ask some questions of some more experienced developers. Yes I know there's no practical reason for this, and no you cannot talk me out of it.
I would like to create a sort of "super nerd" adaptation of CyanogenMod for command line Linux junkies, or at least for Comp Sci grad students like myself. I want my phone to be able to recompile and reinstall nearly everything it runs. Yes I know that's a painful and slow operation: I did "emerge tightvnc" on a chroot Gentoo install and the command took about 18 hours. I remain undeterred.
Questions:
Sun JDK is apparently not available for arm7a. Am I reading the docs correctly, and one can indeed use Apache Ant to compile Android? Or is Ant not what I think it is? I'm not opposed to creating a small Bochs VM that boots, mounts a network filesystem, executes some JDK task, and then signals to terminate. I'd rather not if I can help it though.
How much access does the radio hardware get to the rest of the system? If I were to store something personal in an encrypted loopback partition, could someone abuse direct memory access to read from memory without the host OS knowing about it?
Has anyone played with adapting the Android boot process to use System V type init scripts? I'd like to make it easy for Tasker to say "we're running out of memory -- go from init level 5 to something arbitrary, say 7, which stops some services. Oops, still low, go init level 8, which disables more services.
I definitely plan on sharing my work. What do you guys think of the name CyanoGentoo?
Thanks all.
Apparently Apache Ant is not what I thought it is.
How about this then: does anyone know where I might find a community for people interested in general purpose computing on an Android phone?

Don't know if you're still around but I'm very interested in helping and believe I may already have some solutions for you. If you're still running chroot or another form of ARM Linux distro (Debian based is what I'm coding for at the moment) then check my github
https://github.com/S0AndS0/Debian-Kit-Mods
The readme file has directions on how to clone and run the main modding script which curently has at least one if not two options that'll peek your interest for sure.
One set of options will download and install Java's JDK (either hard float or soft float) and another will download and install jMonkey (a user friendly programing SDK built on eclips) which will get you one step closer to compiling things on an Android device for Android devices. However, I've yet to crack running "Android SDK" because they have yet to reliece an ARM compatible source and "wine" (a Linux package for emulating other CPU's) is still under heavy development, so building Android from source and such is still out of the scope of what I've been able to script up for easy use.
On a side note; a quick google search of my user name and the key words guide, linux, jdk, arm and xda will result in links of what I've written up on enteracting with Linux on Android if you get stuck anywhere.
And if you search "raspberry pi android adb similar:xda" you'll find what I'll likely be working on bringing to Android; after debugging the script I'm working on to set up a Brendle (one of many methods of "cloud computing" availible for ARM) node/network through all availible network interfaces (bluetooth, 3G/4G, wifi) on Android.

I am still around, and when I get a chance I'll take a look. I think I'm mostly satisfied with AIDE and chroot Ubuntu.
And those worried about dma exploits via radio hardware need only use a wifi-only device with a portable hotspot, I've concluded. No way to prevent these exploits otherwise.
Thanks again.

Indeed AIDE has been a fantastic tool for me as well.
Heh dma was indeed a concern of mine among other security issues with running Linux over 3/4G but its to bad there's no solution yet. I'm using old phones and tablets for most tests but try as I might I can't break into them from out side my hotspot network... even though I can connect to the divice running the hotspot remotely if it is running Linux too.
hmm, I'm working on a new script of examples for networking now, lots of building blocks to my latest project, which may help new scripters with some networking tedium of finding and assigning specific IP's to variables so they can be shared or saved or modified into other commands quickly. This will upon compleation will be one of the references for other scripts I'm working on for getting openstack and MPI running on multiple devices swiftly.
Speaking of MPI; the installer for Bramble on Android now works (install option 2 within for Debian Kit users) for getting that software package installed and all that is left to work on is the setup for machine files and sshkeys for multi-node quick set-up.
Two questions; seeing as how you have AIDE, perhaps you might be able to help with my other project that I'm working on? I've another github repo where I'm working to incorporate a; soft/hard float Linux installer, terminal emulator, rdp/vnc client, scripter, and forwarding of Linux GUI to a second device and/or Chromecast of a specific desktop or Linux window with x11... Currently stuck on the terminal but still very new to Java for Android.
or because that's a bit much to ask; perhaps some help with Android scripting for installing Linux on Android that uses Debian Kit's methods to provide hard float or soft float?
I'll be around and have modified my sig for easier tracking and will be pushing more updates to github today, hopefully by the end of the day have a sshkey passer script for quickly setting up passwordless remote login. After that will be some work on setting up bridges between USB, Bluetooth, Wifi, and any other network interface available for faster transfer of large data sets.

Check out the Debian Kit app, from what I have found it exposes all of the Linux processes and file system to Android and if running as root user on Linux then the full Android file system is exposed too. Debian Kit doesn't use chroot to run Linux so it's "possible" to run a chroot environment at the same time. And running "ps" commands on Android or Linux terminals, produce nearly identical output, of both Linux and Android processes happily running meaning that if Tasker can't see these processes then a script can run the "ps" command and run a command to shut down Linux processes; likely it's a bit more complex because re-starting those services or even suspending some could cause un-wanted behavior. Still though with testing and time it is possible to have the memory better managed.
Update 03312014- Back on making your phone compile itself subject; I'm working on using(/scripting an installer for) OpenStack on Android, which has QEMU for emulating CPU processors which will eventually allow us to install Android SDK on Android(s) running Linux. I'm using OpenStack because to emulate a normal PC processor one even a quad core ARM processor is really slow (use to be an app for this called Limbo PC emulator but last I searched the market place this app was gone) so using OpenStack will allow us to throw what ever extra Android phones into a pool of sharable CPU power; essentially I'll be creating a 7 or 8 (virtual) core processor out of networked Android phones and then emulate a 2 or 4 core x86 processor within and install the tool kits for android that have CPU requirements.
I've other plans for OpenStack too but those will require that I incorporate mesh networking and google translate. So that users anywhere can build a cloud of shared processing power.

I need working ssh client

Hi
My phone lumia 930 so windows 8.1
I have seen on US market is Putty, unfortunately cannot download it because stay in uk
I tried to change region for US in phone but doesn't work
Anyone have idea how to install apps from other country app store or know working ssh client which will connect with my qnap nas server?
There's lots of WP SSH clients. I haven't tested them all on 8.1, but they should work. Have you considered just checking the store for "ssh"?
The one I use is called "The SSH Client". The free version works quite well, although there's a paid version with more features.
Yeah, there is few of them and some working but in lan only.
If I'm trying get connected from outside my lan will revive only : This port is not supported by ssh.
Port is properly redirected but different as standard.
Any way it shouldn't be a problem I have putty on my windows rt and connecting without any problems.

Well if you're familiar with SSH then you must of heard about PUTTY , so i'm happy to inform you that there is a working WP8 version of PUTTY, for now it's in closed beta, but you can be part of it, just be sure to drop the developer an email( the default MS account on the device ) for beta access at [email protected]
Can confirm eventhou it's still in beta it's working like a charm.
PROOF : PUTTY
Any decent SSH client, including the one I recommended, supports custom ports... but hey, that PuTTY looks pretty good too!

Yup, there are a few things that need sorting out. For some people it occasionally crashes when they connect and it's related to loading the sound files used for the system beep and the keyboard clicks. I've not been able to get to the bottom of that yet but the next minor update has some improved crash reporting which should help.
There is also a few people experiencing some problems whilst tunnelling.
I can't reproduce either of this bugs though in the emulator or any of my phones. Once they're sorted though I should be taking it public

Neither of those affected me, maybe poor net signal is the culprit of tunnelling errors.
Can I really view internal system files using SHSH client on WP? I own Lumia 920.
No, you would need an SSH *server* for that. I don't have one of those (although it should be possible to write or port one), but an FTP / Telnet server is pretty easy.
Alternatively, you can use the Webserver app in my signature.
Note that in either case, this will let you browse only small parts of the file system (the Windows directory and the application's own directories). The AllCapabilities version of the webserver has more access (it can see other apps, your documents and media folders, OEM folders, and the entire SD card), but is still restricted. You need capability-unlock (usually means a Samsung phone) to install the AppCaps version of the app.
