[Q] question about frozen bionic - Motorola Droid Bionic

Ok, I work for a cell phone repair place as a repair tech. Granted most of what I do is physical repairs, I have a Bionic that is stuck on the "Dual Core technology screen, with the Motorola emblem at start up. I have tried several times to do a hard reset with key combinations, factory data reset, to no avail. I can get to the screen that has the option to reinstall from the SD card, but don't know what to download, or where to download from. (sorry, mostly iPhone guy here.... don't hate) any advice would be greatly appreciated, as my boss is kind of freaking out about this.. Thank you.

This guide saved my ass when I bricked my phone.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13485-unbrick-your-bionic-here/
Download the first link only [unless you get a CDT failure then I will tell you what else to do.]
Download RSDLite.
Download Bionic drivers.
Boot into fastboot by holding the volume down key and power at the same time.
Extract the first download into a folder.
Open RSDLite.
Click where you see the "..." and navigate to the extracted download.
You will see a .xml, open that up and hit start.

there's no reason to hate. your in xda

If all goes well, you should now be on the home screen. MAKE SURE TO DO ALL THE UPDATES! If you dont, your customer will update and possibly get a CDT failure. If you do get a CDT failure then boot back into fastboot.
Download the attached file and extract it, run the FixCDT.bat file [something along those lines.] After it finishes then reboot the phone.
And you are all set! If I've helped then you can thank me by hitting the thanks button, lol. PM me if you need anything.

Help 2 day old Captivate Freezing up.

I have a Samsung Captivate and was able to sim unlock nd then root everything was running great, but because i wanted to change the rom and get rid of the AT&T bloatware I decided to install SRE rom from this site but first i had to install rom manager from the market, & install Clockwork Mod which i did so far so good. I go ahead watch the video follow it step by step except i didn't wipe data then install rom. So i decided to kinda start over i booted into recovery wiped data then attempted to install SRE rom again and that's when all hell broke loose phone freezing up on the home screen, not completing its boot process, rebooting by itself, i tried removing Sim card, Microsd, but still not allowing me to reboot into recovery with the key combo or ne other way for that matter. I then tried odin one click to reinstall factory everything but no luck. Sorry for the long story just trying to put it all out there. O yeah i'm a newb incase you couldn't tell. I don't have insurance to try to return to at&t. Thank you in advance for any and all help you may provide.

try getting your phone into download mode. If you can do that then use odin to flash everything to stock.
Are you able to get adb to access the phone? You can access recovery from there with the following command:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Also, are you getting into download mode when trying Odin 1-click? I've found a pretty fool-proof method pull battery/SIM/SD, putting the battery in, holding down the two volume buttons and then plugging in the USB. Works every time for me, and is easier than it sounds.
I was stuck on a boot loop the other night and that process got me into download mode so I could flash with Odin and then restore my backup.
Worst comes to worst, just bring it to AT&T and say it randomly did that. If it's only two days old, and you're under contract (didn't buy it outright) you don't need insurance. I don't even think insurance is available for this phone.
take out the battery, plug in the usb, put the battery back in, hold both volume buttons down, then hold the power button down... the grey/green battery icon will flash to a black screen, as soon as it flashes to the black screen the second time, let the power button go, and download mode should be there.
@rrrrrramos i do not have a contract with them. I obtained this phone through a friend that does have insurance for the handset. Since my computer does not recognize it i am not able to adb.
@magnumrt62 & rrrrramos I have tried these button, usb combos and nothing. I appreciate all the responses i will con't to try and seek psychiatric help...lol.
How would i know i am in dl mode? All it does when i let go of the power button after the second blk screen is nothing but show green battery nd con't to charge then goes to black screen. Computer doesn't recognize it.
Are you using the SRE with voodoo in it, if so that is not playing nice with ROM Manager, it is a known issue that Clockwork Mod dosen't recognize ext4. Sounds like that may be the issue. read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
It sound like that is the problem.
I am unable to mount/unmount the internal/external sd cards because the phone freezes and does not allow for this. The few times i was able to get odin to recognize phone com3 i hit masterclear left it alone and 6hrs later it had done nothing. I can't even get into recovery mode. I am about to see if this beautiful phone will fly then bounce... O how a grown man wants to cry over his phone... LMAO... Can ne 1 close to orlando, kissimme, poincianna help a fellow Captivate lover out i got beer money, gas money, i'll drive too you. hell i'll even cook a new york strip or two.. HELP ME PLEASE..
To do master clear your have to be in usb debug mode and at the home screen. Fire up odin then plug the phone in odin will see the phone and then hit master clear. It will then wipe the phone

Thats where the phone freezes up at on the home screen and just stays stuck there. The last time I was able to get into the phone i switched on usb debugging but still nothing. I just booted up the phone and heard the sweet bing sound but still doesn't show up.. I really appreciate every1 taking time out to try to help me.. Just wanted to put that out there..
So am i one of the unfortunate souls to have "BRICKED" his phone. I will not give up yet.. As long as i see the sweet "S" i will not give up..
I don't think you bricked it. Something is going on with your drivers, if the computer won't recognize it. Obviously your phone has been able to boot into recovery before if you had ClockworkMod on it. Did you get into Recovery using the key combo?
I have not been able to get into recovery using any key combo. Right know i am actually in Android System Recovery by using adb reboot recovery and a lil luck and speed. It is recognized by odin3 0:[com3] but it will not do any thing. I clicked master clear and it states master clear started but that was 53 minutes ago.
You need to use the odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 as it is made to specifically use with the captivate. It also includes the jf6 kernael which is critical. I used method 3 for the I-9000 because SRE 1.3 put that kernel on the phone and screwed it up big time, it has different hardware assignments. When you put the battery in, hold volume up and down and plug in the usb, no sim, no external sd when doing this. No other version of odin worded for me, just this one. You can't do a master clear until you are fully booted, I don't care what anyone says, it will never work, besides, you don't need to. You need to hit the "Start" button in odin when it show that you're connected. It will reflash you phone with the proper rom and kernel.
Don't download anything else from there but the odin file, you have the drivers already and don't need the other kernels (what got you here to begin with ). just that version of odin that already has what you need.
Good luck man!

It's great that you can get into recovery mode through adb because that means you can get into download mode: adb reboot download. Then you can flash back to stock with odin.
Also forget about recovery. That's not going to help you right now. You need to be in download mode to use Odin
I'm going to give that a shot when i get home. Why didn't I think about adb reboot download wow guess you can tell i'm a real NEWB.. Thanks i'll let u know how it works out for me..

What is it that you don't understand. Master clear only works when you are at the home screen. You can't evoke it from download mode or recovery. You have to have your phone recognized by odin when you are at your home screen and then you can hit master clear. That is the only way that it will work.
It sounds like adb works so when you are at the home screen and you envoke adb reboot recovery it reboots the phone into recovery correct. If that is working then there should be no reason master clear won't work then. Boot the phone up normally and then run odin 1 click then plug the phone in if odin recognizes the phone then hit master clear and see what it does. It should work.
@ Everyone who suggested things for me to try THANK YOU. I finally got it with the adb reboot download. Didn't know i could do that. @Sparker366 I would envoke adb b4 it got to the home screen as soon as odin recognized it i would envoke commands, because the phone would freeze on me on the home screen Just didn't know about the "download" command. Thanks again every1...

Will not go in download mode

I was at 2.1.1 Cognition and for some stupid reason went into ROM manager and tried to apply my original backup I did when I was just Rooted and on the stock software from ATT.
It got to the data partion and couldnt access it, rebooted and now I get force close errors when it boots. I can virtually do nothing cause the errors just come one after another.
I tried to go into download mode so I could use ODIN and start over and it will NOT go in download mode. I am holding the vol up and down and then pressing power. I am holding all three until the screen goes black twice then letting go of the power. It just goes back to the little circle in the middle meaning its charging.
I am hosed....please help me get this fixed!
The force closes comes from within android...its boots up but is unusable.

First of all, for God's sake please post on the RIGHT AREA. This is not develpoment....the mods are tired of saying the same thing and I dont see why is this so hard to understand.
Turn the phone off then Hold Vol Up and Down then plug the usb while holding those.
That is the way mine goes into download mode.
My bad, feel free to move it.
As I posted, I am doing that and cant get into download mode....please help and again sorry for posting to the wrong area. Im kinda freaking out.
Appologies again, I didnt read your post well.
I tried it the way you stated as well and it goes to the charging screen only.
When I post in the future I will pay more attention to where I post, I understand the frustration.
I cant go into recovery or download either one. Am I bricked? I could really, really use some help. I know I screwed it up and it was a great lession...I just dont want it to be a costly one.
1st question - were you able to get into either download mode or recovery mode via the button combos before you installed cognition?
2nd - if you let it boot up will it boot all the way to the lock screen?
1) Yes I was able to get into download mode and recovery mode before I screwed up.
2) Yes, I can get all the way to the lock screen and if i catch it just right I can navigate the os but it is almost impossible.
The backup from within ROM Manager I applied was back to the original OS that came on the phone that was rooted and had rom manager on it.
I would bet that whatever files allow you to get into download mode, etc are gone or something along those lines.
I am about to freak out.
have you tried pulling your battery, sim card, and any external sd card, let the phone set for a minute, then put back only the battery and then try either the recovery or download button combo?
I am able to get all the way to about phone and here is what it says. I have a combination of mess....man I screwed up royally.

Again, I was on 2.1.2 Cognition and went through ROM manager and applied a backup which was a snapshot of my phone the day I got it, rooted it, and added ROM Manager. Which isnt there now.
I know what I did was really stupid, I know what I should have done. I would just really appreciate any help getting this back or getting it to a point that I could send it back and not get charged for it. I got it from amazon. Do you even think they would look at the file system? I am within my 30 day window.
Yes, it boots up normally meaning not into download or recovery mode. The specific errors I am getting in the os are as follows:
The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly and i have to click force close. I do get a few others about browser, phone, gallery, calendar, but in the end the media one is the one that comes up over and over. Since I can get this far surely there is a way to get me back to a workable state that I can fix it.
If not, I wonder if I could connect via usb and try to wipe every file off the darn thing and send it back? Obviously I would like to avoid that but I am running out of options and frankly this is over my head.
I dont think your trying the download mode correctly with the battery out. You need to take your battery out, put the battery back into the phone, hold down BOTH the volume up and down keys at the same time by pushing in the middle of the keys and then plug the usb into your phone. This works every time.
I can get into the phones Hard drive via USB and see the folders. I see .img files within clockwork that were suppose to have applied, not that it it matters.
I wonder if I could delete anything that isnt part of the stock image and send it back and just not be an idiot again? I really dont want to do that but I dont know what to do.
I found this log file on the device and the last line was the error that I got right before it rebooted and I was hosed:
Can't mount /data/!
Failure at line 2:
restore_rom /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/original boot system data cache sd-ext
aNdroidnut I tried it exactly as described and all I get is the lines in a circle stating that its charging then the battery charging. I have tired it the way you said and the way I had done it all the other times.
I think the problem is i have an incomplete OS since it failed in the restore process within ROM Manager because I never should have done it that way.
If you were able to get into download via button combo before you should be able to do it now with after pulling your battery, sim card and external sd card as I mentioned before.

If you can get to this point you are not bricked and can recover. I am guessing you are connected to your computer in usb debuggin mode -- this is good as there is another way to get into download mode.
use oden3 one click here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
use download method one in the odin3 instructions if you can get connected to your computer in usb debugging mode. use download method 3 if you can get into download mode via the button combo after a battery pull
i think you failed at reading the warning:
disable the lagfix before trying to use clockwork
Are you trying this with Odin already open?

When I try what everybody else explains I too just go back to the loading circle. Then it just goes right back to my charging screen. I figured this method out by mere chance one night when tinkering. I haven't seen it posted anywhere, so hopefully this is what you need:
1) open odin
2) pull battery, sdcard, and sim card
3) plugin usb to phone and computer(NO BATTERY YET)
4) hold down vol up and vol down(NO POWER BUTTON)
5) place battery into the phone
This works every time for me no exceptions.
Hope this helps,

OK, I have made progress thanks to the great tools these guys have and your help!
I am shaking as I type this (yea i know its just a phone). I was able via Odin to do a master clear. It rebooted and now I get into the OS and get NO errors. It seems fine but will not go into download mode no matter what I do and I have gone into it many times in the past. I went from stock (via Odin) to Cognition several times initially to really understand the process. I never had problems getting into download or recovery.
I really think, with you guys help, Im going to be ok here. I saw where you wanted me to do method 3. I have tried method 3 many times and method 2 many times.
Since I am able to get it to boot error free I was considering unrooting, rooting, downloading ROM Manager and trying to put Cognition 2.1.2 on it via Rom Manager. BUT before I do that I want advice if you would. Obviously following what I thought got me to this point to start with.

Help! formatted system and rebooted accidentally

OK, so I am not new to flashing ROM's, but I formatted system from recovery (storage and mounts) and was going to flash unleashed 1.1, but somehow I accidentally rebooted phone before flashing anything!
Now the phone only boots into the M dual core logo, and wont go any further. After a battery pull, I attempted to go into recovery by volume up/down and power button simultaneously, and choose recovery, but the phone goes to the exclamation point inside the triangle and wont boot into recovery.
What do I do?
There's a partial fxz that will reflash just the stock system partition. Find that and use it.

I guess this is relatively simple. Haven't had to use RSD, so will search for a tutorial. Hope this file will download from the coffee shop I am at in the next 30 minutes!
Easy. Pull battery. Put battery back in. Hold vol down button. Press the power button to get the black screen with white letters. Launch rsd pick the file you downloaded select uncompress and flash. Go have a cigarette or quick beer and it will be done.
I have done it way too many times by bricking my phone trying to edit services jar to get 1% battery increments although i may throw in the towel soon on that

Actually, was already rooted and had a back up, was gonna update from unleashed 1.0 to 1.1, and pulled a dumb A** mistake. First time since having a rooted D1, and Incredible that I have done this!
I love this forum and all its users!
I had the same problem FINALLY got it working.
Ok I might sound retarded, but I can not get this phone started. I root the one with one of the One-click programs then i went on to remove the bloatware, however I guess I removed the home launcher without installing another one from the market. Now the phone will not pass the screen that comes right after the big M. What do i do? can someone please help?

I am stuck at this screen. Wont let me do anything! Anyone knows what I should do? Thanks
I swear I just saw a post last night that stated you could get into recovery by the following method.
pull the battery, put battery back in, hold down the volume up and down buttons while pressing the power button simultaneously. This should take you to the screen with exclamation mark inside triangle.
Next (this is the part where I get uncertain. Darn memory)
press the volume buttons simultaneously and it takes you to factory recovery? or volume down by itself. If you can get to recovery you can wipe cache/dalvik cache and system format under (mounts and storage), then re-flash the rom again.
But I am not certain about that, because I cant find it again, but it wont hurt to try.
If that doesnt work, you may have to do the following, but It would seem like that is extreme fix for just removing your launcher?
someone chime in here.

I got it figured it out. I had to install fastboot images and flash them to phone by windows command prompt. Thanks everyone!

Screwed the pooch totally this time..

Not sure how I did it, but I am stuck at the Red LG logo with the white LG letters and my phone will go no further. It will not shut down without a battery pull. I have tried to do the hold down volume and factory reset the phone, same screen pops back up. Plugged in does nothing either. It is like it lost the ability to boot.
I ask here for maybe some guidance from a dev. If wrong place, please move it.
I can not get into the recovery, regular boot, computer to recognize it.. Nothing at all... Is there an actual boot image to put on the sd card to boot to?
Any suggestions??

You can get into emergency mode to flash the tot file in lgnspt.
1 Pull Battery
2 Press and hold volume up + power
3 Plug phone into computer (while still holding buttons)
4 Put battery back in (while still holding buttons)
5 You should now enter emergency mode
Can u enter CWM? By holding down pwer and vol down. Then confirm data wipe (it won't) then reboot into cwm? If u can try to install a rom

not good....

I think I might have done it, this time. I installed RebelROM on my phone, as I was curious if it would be more battery friendly. I decided that it wasn't, and went to reboot into recovery to reinstall the nandroid I had made earlier in the afternoon. Oops. My only available recovery was CWM, not TWRP. No problem, I thought, I will just reinstall with CWM. Give me a chance to learn the new recovery, I thought. But, CWM wasn't seeing my external SD card, so I went back and forth to move the nandroid I had made to the internal SD, so CWM could see it. I also installed TWRP to the internal SD, as CWM was proving to be a pain. Unfortunately, TWRP wasn't able to access my internal SD, where the nandroid was now stored, so I tried to recover into an older nandroid. Now, though, the phone won't boot at all, past the screen that describes the phone as an Exhibit from T-Mobile. I can't boot back into recovery. I can't access the drives through the USB cord, either. Any suggestions? Skyukillparanormal has disappeared. Ironically, I'm up in his neck of the woods. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Pull the battery. After replacing, push down the power button and volume up at the same time. Hole them down for a few seconds. CWM should reappear. Either restore your recovery if it was CWM created or reflash the ROM.

Unfortunately, AD, CWM is not reappearing. I had been holding down the power and volume down keys to no avail. Now I know why. It seems, though, that the power/volume up combo has the same (lack of) effect. Am I screwed?

If that isn't working there are more serious problems. Try 2 or 3 times as it doesn't always work the first time. You can try ODIN but it's for advanced users. If you don't know how to use it probably not the best option. I hope you didn't brick your recovery because in that case that's the only option that will save you.

I tried multiple times. I was thinking ODIN might be my only option, but I would never do that myself. I will have to do some research to learn if there is someone near where I am now, or where I live. Thanks for your help. I thought we'd lost you to the S2 fora....

Well soon that will be the case but not yet! Anyway here the link to get ODIN: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2012979&d=1370213005
Instructions here:
2. With your phone powered off, go into the Download (or Odin) mode by pressing the volume down and power buttons. When the screen with the exclamation mark appears, select the volume up button. You should now be in download mode.
3. Connect your Galaxy Exhibit to your PC.
3. Open Odin Multi Downloader v4.43.exe on your PC.
4. click on the OPS-Button and navigate to the folder with the extracted files and select Ancora.ops file.
5. Select the options: One Package, Protect OPS. I did not touch the Auto Reboot, Reset Time options.
6.Click on the One Package-Button and select the md5 file in the extracted folder.
7. Click on the Start button. The flashing process took around 5 minutes for me, at which point the phone rebooted into recovery mode to finish the process. I selected reboot the system.
ODIN flashable CWM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1962398&d=1368560948
If you do this, keep in mind I can't be responsible for the results. Otherwise then yes, seek assistance from somebody who can help you in person.

Thank you for the link, but I can already tell that there will be a problem with that solution, as well. I tried over and over to press the power volume down button. I never saw a screen with an exclamation point. I never see anything until I release both buttons, at which point it starts up normally, but like I said, freezes before the rom loads, or before loading any recovery. There seems to be no difference if I hold down the vol up or the vol down button.

Just like CWM, it can take a few tries. Yeah I know that gets old but sometimes it's taken me 4 or 5 attempts before I can get the phone into download mode. Don't give up until you're sure there is nothing to be done. It really just sounds like a soft brick to me.
Maybe if all else fails just say the hell with it, and if you can, get the Galaxy Light on HSN ($150). They'll let you pay in installments if you can't/don't want to pay all at once. You won't be able to root it just yet since it's new, but man maybe it's for the best. At least you will not be able to brick that phone! It has JB on it anyway.

Soft brick is what I was thinking, too.
Man, that Galaxy Light is perfect! I have been looking for exactly that phone for a while. When did it come out? And paying in installments makes it even better. Plus, I've now learned my lesson. When I do root that phone, I will be more careful about my flashaholic tendencies. If I get it, that is. We'll have to see.

Came out in just the past couple of months. The hardware is so much better than the Exhibit. Again keep in mind, there presently is no way to root it and there are no custom ROMs right now. Activity on XDA for this device has been pretty light, only downside to this phone and the main reason I passed on it.

I understand about there being no xda activity. That's a consideration. With 8 GB of internal storage _plus_ a removable SD card, though, I can't see bloatware being a problem for a bit. By then, the Slimroms guys will have gotten ahold of it and put together something, I am sure. Can I live with stock jb? Can I even pick this up? Hmmmmmm...... Food for thought.

sorry, AD. I have one more question. Once I reboot into recovery mode, can I just reflash a nandroid, or do I have to reload the rom and kernel again?

You should be able to restore the nandroid. Since you have CWM working again, you can always do a full wipe & flash the ROM again if that doesn't work.

I got everything going to the point where I was to select the md5 file. There was no md5 file in the Odin folder I downloaded and extracted. Where should I look for the md5 file to restart the phone? It also seems that ODIN doesn't recognize that the phone is connected. The phone says it's in ODIN mode, but the program isn't showing any indication that the phone is connected. Thanks.

Wow, then that means you don't have the Samsung drivers installed. This is getting more complicated. You'll have to have the drivers installed for this device. Unfortunately it might be too late because after you get them installed to your PC, you have to connect your phone and it would have to be in a usable state for the drivers to finish installing if I remember correctly.
Anyay you can still try it, here's the drivers you need: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-T679DBBTMB?
it sure is nice being able to reach out and having people give assistance. thanks guys.

Actually, all is not lost. The drivers have been located and installed and the phone is now detected. Exactly which boxes are checked on the ODIN panel? You had mentioned that you didn't touch two of them (Protect OPS and Reset Time, I believe), but those were already selected when the program started. Right now, all 4 options are selected. Is the CWM .tar file all you need for the One Package link, or is there something else?

No the CWM file is all you need. After you flash that you're done.

That's what the community should be all about. If I need something I'd hope someone would do the same for me and usually they do.

Error message saying an unnamed file was not found and operation terminated...
edit-never mind. it's fine. it's doing its thing....
It says "pass" and the 5 min timer is done, but the phone has not rebooted. Is there something else I need to do? Auto-reboot is selected, but it doesn't seem to be booting. Thanks.
