[Q]phone files - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, is it possible to see the phone files in a pc just like we see sd files?
And second, is it possible to see them instantly(just connect usb), without hit "usb storage" or sth like that?

What do you mean by "phone files"?
Everything that is OUTSIDE of /sdcard (read: the root folder of the system)?
There are tools like Android Master (do a little research in the Android Development and Hacking section) that are graphical frontends to "adb", so you can browse the whole of the folders on your phone from your computer.
Note that this requires USB-Debugging enabled, so don't forget to turn it off when not needed.

yes android files, sony ericsson files ,everything

Ok, then simply look around in the Android Development and Hacking section - especially the Android Software Development board and Android Apps and Games board. There's the one or another Windows software that lets you browse the phone ...
If I recall correctly there's even a plugin for Total Commander to browse the phone from within Total Commander.

USB Transfer Problem. Help!

Hi all, can anyone sort this -
When i connect via usb i choose 'disk drive' to transfer files/music etc to the phone. Everty time i try to transfer anything it says on the PC (windows xp) 'cannot copy xxxx - the path is too deep'
Has anyone else had any problems or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
My first reaction is to say that wherever you're trying to copy from or too has a long pathname. Are you trying to copy individual files or whole folders, and where are you trying to copy from/to (e.g. My Documents)?

It doesn't matter how long the filename is it still says it. I've tries individual files and full folders but still the same. And i've tried copying from/to all sorts of different places but still no joy???
Hmmm. Maybe the way that Windows is transferring files is malfunctioning. This is definitely an advanced problem, which requires an expert.
*Waits for expert*
First of all, try another USB port. If that doesn't work, try this, in order. stop after the diamond works:
1- uninstall/reinstall activesync, then try accessing files with it.
2- Stop the Diamond usb drive by clicking the safely remove device icon. Then plug it again.
3- Uninstall all USB Root hub in your windows device manager, then reboot computer.
4- Hard Reset device.
5- Reinstall Windows
6- Return Device.
Can you try moving a file name with 8 chacters or less from your c:\ to the phone? Eg c:\song.mp3 to your phone
Also, what OS are you using? What file system does the phone 'disk' show up as in windows?

It shows as fat32. ?
this simply means the files are under a folder tree with too deep or too long with characters. such as:
C:\My Documents and Settings\Andrew Loh\Documents\my structural folders\andrew loh\scanning\pdf\finanacial documents\banking stuff\hong kong bank\bank statement\date 2008-06-09\page 1\200806091211224412.pdf
Simpliest thing first.....take your diamond to another computer.....confirm if it's computer problem or diamond problem

It seems related to FAT system I guess.
Could you try to format the disk from PC when connected as DISK mode and try to copy file or folder again?
This might be helpful.

Right - i've tried to transfer files from a different pc via 'disk mode' and it worked fine.
I can transfer stuff from mine via active sync but it takes ages transferring albums etc. It must be some setting on my computer causing the problem, although i don't have problems transferring things to sd cards etc. Any ideas?
For the love of God...
Hi All,
This seems like a very old problem but as far as I can tell, was never resolved or someone didn't share their solutions with the rest of us lovely newbies!
Unfortunately for me I am now having the same problem and after searching the forums it led me to this thread (along with two others that didn't have any difinitive answers either). When trying to copy anything that is within a folder from my comp (be it from a partitioned drive or the desktop of the root C: drive) I get the error "Cannot Copy ****ath is too deep".
After much trawling on the internet I found some third party software that should have solved the problem. No such luck , when using that I get a "semaphore timeout error". Next I try to direct extract from a .rar file to the internal memory and it tells me the reason it can't complete is that "the disk may be full".
As it stands now; I've formatted my phone's internal storage (and then had to transfer all programs one by one back over from my comp), enabled DMA transfer from the Device Manager in Windows XP and still no luck at all.
Could someone please shed some light on this as (as you could probably tell by the long winded post) I'm at my wit's end with this despite loving the phone in general!
Cheers in advance,
Night
I also have the same problem,
When i use activesync, big files like movies can only be put on the device itself, not the internal memory of 4g.
When i use the diskdrive option, the computer sees it als an usb storage, but files cannot be transferred, because of the "path is too deep" error.
in dutch it is called "pad is te lang", any options?
Also does someone know where to buy the official extended battery in Holland, because bol.com cannot deliver and other sites are way expensive.
Ok, just fixed it.
I turned off the activesync software in windows.
Connected the device to my usbconnector on the back of the pc (a 2.0 usbdrive)
Then it worked! Now 755 mb of .mp4 movie on the device...
i dont know if someone still got such a problem. I got it today and solved it with flashing an other rom on it from the Ruu.

Start from scratch, HOW to use Android SDK?

Hi..
I have been through half the internet, but i cudnt find one post or set of instructions on HOW to use SDK properly by noobs...
Let me be very honest about it...
Its really hard to understand if u dont know programming....
To begin with how do you "ADD PATH"
Add what, where, how???
No instructions at all...
Also, every-time i run that damn sdksetup.exe...some two windows are open and just NOTHING HAPPENS...
PS: PLZ don't ask me to "simply" "add" "Location" in the "Path" cause I have no idea what that means...and no, im not happy to make this thread either...
ALL I WANT TO DO IS CONNECT MY COMP to the damn DROID...

I have Windows XP SP 2...
I have posted pix of where I am stuck...
(all this comes pretty much from memory, I don't have any windows handy)
Rename the folder so that it doesn't have any spaces. ie. instead of "Mount SD", call it "Mount_SD" for convenience. it is possible to get it to work with spaces, but I suspect it is beyond your current abilities.
Go to Start->Run (or Win+R)
Enter
cmd.exe
in the resulting dialog.
in the newly opened command line window type:
set PATH=$PATH;D:\Froyo\Mount_SD\android-sdk-windows\tools
now you can refer to adb directly, ie typing:
adb devices
should give you a list of connected android devices and emulators
There is a way to make the addition to PATH permanent, but it involves right-clicking on "My Computer" and after searching in there for something like "Environment Variables" editing the PATH statement there. Unfortunately, I don't quite remember where exactly this is...
Right click 'My computer' , properties, advanced tab, click on the environment variables button, go to the path variable, add a ; at the end, and at the path string there.
but running an SDK to connect the phone, when you don't know how to set the path variable might not be the best solution.
SDK on Windows 7
hello,
did you follow the link developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
But what do you want do with the SDK, just access the file on the Android device or develop an application?
I have had no problem with latest version of the SDK on win7, but the I have to lunch Haret when my X1 was connect to the PC with Winmo and then it's has been recognized as a HTC dream (see attach).

What is the problem with using google?
a simple search for "windows path variable" will give you tons of information about what you tried to do...
example: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000549.htm
btw: this thread has nothing to do with "XPERIA X1 Android Development"

your question was more in the term:
how do i configure/use my $OPERATING_SYSTEM to use $SOFTWARE?
why do you want to access the storage card from adb?
if you try to install software do it via adb itself:
Installing an Application after your connected
You can use adb to copy an application from your development computer and install it on an emulator/device instance. To do so, use the install command. With the command, you must specify the path to the .apk file that you want to install:
adb install <path_to_apk>For more information about how to create an .apk file that you can install on an emulator/device instance, see Android Asset Packaging Tool (aapt).
Note that, if you are using the Eclipse IDE and have the ADT plugin installed, you do not need to use adb (or aapt) directly to install your application on the emulator/device. Instead, the ADT plugin handles the packaging and installation of the application for you.

Well, if you're imagining copy/paste files through windows explorer, we're not there yet.
However, ``adb push D:\myfile.mp3'' and ``adb pull /sdcard/media/song.mp3'' work.
In short, get comfortable with the command line or forget about it for now.
If ``adb devices'' reports "No devices found", remember that you need to connect the USB cable in windows mobile, select ActiveSync (there's no need to actually have ActiveSync running on your PC) and then run Haret with the USB cable still plugged in.

I am developing android applications on the xperia and can attest that the SDK works as expected/advertised. It is not user-friendly in the sense you want it to be though

You can get Droid Explorer Here
No messing around with the SDK and you can copy/paste, do most stuff
A little buggy, but works for most things
But why do you are loosing so much time on setting the PATH, it's not necessary to do this. if you want use the adb just go in the direcortory where it's installed and that's it. In any case you could not expcet to se the sdcard folder like a windows folder. Once connect correctly, adb devices list a device on line, you can "talk" with the device like this "adb shell" ...

LG P990 External Sd Media Scanner Problem

I have a lg p990 running CyanogenMod-7.2.0-p990 with the latest vorkkernel (without flags) and experienced this problem today when your music player apps or your standard gallery app doesnt show anything from the external sd-card. On the other hand you can look at every picture or listen to your mp3's via a file-browser app and the sd card is also shown under Settings/ Memory. So the problem is clearly not on the hardware side because i can access everything on my phones external sd card through a filebrowser.
Things i've already tried:
-Full data wipe and reinstalling cm7.2
Formatting the internal sd card
deleting the data of the mediastorage.app and manually start the media scanner through Dev Tools
Removing and putting back in the sd card 100 times
Rebooting the phone 100 times
i looked in every post at least somehow related to this topic and did not get a working fix/solution at all. Seriously i tried everything...
I just hope someone in this forum could help me (and dont say i should get a new sd card or should send in my phone, because the problem is defenitly not on the hardware side!!!!!).
ROM manager is the problem.
i havent even installed rom manager... can you at least tell me how to fix this? would be awesone

ROM manager I believe is installed in the system, with cm 7. Update it, remove the .nomedia file on the SD and reboot.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837185
i cant find the .nomedia data, where is it?
Look in your sdcard root for a file named .nomedia and del it if it exists. Note that the name stars with a dot (.), what turns it as a hidden file in *nix systems like android. So take care to turn hidden files visible on your file manager.

Stupid RomManager.
Easiest way:
Connect your phone via usb (with usb debugging enabled), open a cmd window and type:
Code:
adb shell
rm /sdcard/.nomedia
adb reboot
You can do this without a PC from Terminal Emulator at Android as well, just open it and type the following.
After a reboot everything is back to normal.
Code:
rm /sdcard/.nomedia
The problem in the FileManager is, that you have to enable "show hidden files" (or sth. like that), a leading dot (".") at a filename indicates a hidden file at Linux.
But of course you can just enable that option and delete the ".nomedia" file manually as well.

wow. i didnt find this .nomedia file on my sd cards root directory so i just searched it with windows over usb, 16 .nomedia files have been found and deleted... i know this problably wasnt the right way to go but it worked nonetheless. a big thanks to everyone
Open "Application manager" (Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications) -> switch to All applications -> find and tap the "Media Storage" application -> tap the "Force stop" button -> tap the "Clear data" button -> perform restart of device

mtp total commander?

I accessed the mtp file structure with total commander. I wondered on it. Is it something new?
Whoa! That's definitely *different*. What phone are you using?
I'd been considering finding (or writing) an alternate MTP client so that I could take advantage of the Full File System hack on ATIV phones and dump the running file system (Windows Explorer is a miserable MTP client). Looks like TC would probably do the job. However, looks like it also reveals even more than we knew was there...
I'll investigate (once I have a data cable and not just this silly charge cable) and see what I can find.
nothing new but available few months in beta releases (8.50)... just start TC, select Computer (drive overview) and WP8 phone is there
latest 8.50 version stable version
http://www.ghisler.com/amazons3.php
or beta 8.51 beta 4
http://www.ghisler.com/851_b4.php
The fact that the phone is there is not the exciting bit (although I didn't know TC supported MTP, so that's cool). The exciting bit is the presence of all those other "folders", like "Apps", "Metadata", "StorageInfo", etc.
I tried 8.51b4. Didn't get anything out of the norm.

Wow ! Take a look
Run as Administrator . Install Media Audio plugin that he mentioned
Go To Network neighborhood then Media Audio
You see your WP Device and in this partition you can see these folders .
but Unfortunately All of these folders are empty !
I'll try it with the Odyssey tomorrow. I wonder if having the Full FS made any changes to permissions to MTP on the device to actually be able to see something inside.

The most bad thing is that we can't write files in these folders .
not only these folders even in Phone folder !
we have write permission when navigate from This PC but we can't write when we navigate from this method
It's seems not very useful but still interesting .
we have to test another MTP device . maybe this plugin shows these folders for every MTP devices !
I ran across the source code, but I haven't found any information about those folders. Altough it is possible that the starnge folders are from an API.
I am trying to find other mtp clients, but tcmd and windwos explorer might be the only ones.

[Q] HTC 8S BSOD crash

After checking my device site I noticed that my HTC was not in the list so I grabbed it and turned it on, I was greated with a BSOD,
Now it doesn't react anymore on charging attempts, plugging it into a pc reveals Complete file system access.
It's now being treated as a USB device and any button on the phone of course doesn't work now. Is there anything I can do to resurrect this thing?
Hi,
Since you have complete FS access, copy the device's contents to your harddrive for research if you didn't do so already, :good:
You have not mentioned using any recovery tools, I suggest you start there...
