Huh!? What are you trying to achieve? Explain more!! This cant be done by the way. Nandroid backup uses a direct image of your system. If you want to restore your Nandroid backup use clockworkmod. I don't understand WHY you would want to flash an "update.zip" of your Nandroid backup. This doesn't make any sense!

i want to modify a rom on the phone by instaling apps etc. and then convert it to an update.zip to share it on xda.

There is ways of flashing a load apps in 1 go. You don't modify a Rom to do this. This would be a separate update.zip or flash-able .zip file. I haven't seen anyone to do this on X8. I have seen this on other forums by developers. I have no clue how to do this myself. Goodluck!!
I will send you a PM of where i saw this?
Oh by the way your signature is UNREAL!!

This is just an idea... You could get a simple version of all your apps and themes on a ROM. Make an Nandroid backup of it. Get the Nandroid back put it into a .zip or .rar file so you can upload it in 1 go. Get people to extract your personal Nandroid backup to clockworkmod folder and restore it. What do you think?
Where did you get that signature? It shows my IP and the name of my ISP looks cool

Phone won't get past boot screen, please help

Hi all,
I have a rooted Rogers Captivate running stock Rogers 2.2 with OCLF. The other day I installed busybox and anim mod, and today I decided to change my transitions with anim mod.
After applying the change, it asked me to restart my phone. I clicked yes, and it hung for a moment before showing a force close screen. However, before I could do anything, it reset, but after the logos and startup animation, it vibrated and went to black. The soft keys still light up, but no buttons including holding down power have any effect.
After pulling out the battery, I discovered I could still get to recovery console (and I'm fairly certain I could get into download mode as well), but my main concern is getting to / backing up my contacts.
Your help would be enormously appreciated!
-Alex
1. Check the files that are present in the theme u installed - typically the files under the system folders
2. Ask ur ROM developer to package these files (from original ROM) into a CWM flashable zip file (assuming u do not know how to do this)
3. Push this to ur phone using adb and install it on ur phone
Next time on, when installing any theme not made 'specifically' for ur ROM, refrain from doing so. In case you are in a mood to experiment, it would recommended to take a nandroid backup in case issues like this come up.
Since u say urs is stock, u could package these files from ur stock zip. For this u'd have to find a Roger's stock zip file, and u should be able to find an empty update.zip to package these files into (attaching template update.zip to this post; open in winrar).
Thank you very much for helping me with this diablo, I really got myself into a mess and I appreciate your help trying to get me out of it.
I'm not running any themes on top of Rogers 2.2, it's pure stock. I don't have CWM on my phone, nor have I used ADB before. Also, I'm not sure where or how I'd get the stock zip, I did download your template but I don't know how to fill it with what I need.
Thanks again,
Alex
Oh, and if you give me a donate button or paypal account, I'd be happy to show my gratitude.

I
Alex, try searching for Rogers stock ROM. U should be able to find it on these forums.
II
Meanwhile, try posting a thread to ask people here who may be on Rogers stock to zip up their /system/framework folder.
Asking for /system/app zip would not be a good idea since it would contain paid apps too. So alternately,
1. Open the theme zip that u put on ur phone
2. Navigate to /system/app folder
3. List down the apps u see there
4. Ask for anyone who's on stock rogers if they can zip up these files for u.
III
Next, considering u have the apps and the contents of /system/framework:
1. Open the file I sent u in 'winrar'
2. Navigate to system/app folder
3. Drop the apps u got from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
4. Navigate to system/framework folder
5. Drop the files in system/framework from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
6. Close winrar and rename to update.zip
IV
7. Put this file on ur SD card root
8. Boot into recovery
9. Select 'apply update.zip' (not sure of exact wording)
10. Reboot
Also, what is the theme u downloaded?
I put the steps in blocks so it would be easy to trouble shoot in case u run into any issues.
All the best Alex.
[Q] Phone won't get past boot screen, please help
Thank you again, Diablo, lunch is on me today.
I don't have any themes installed, this is the program that created the trouble for me, which I download from the Android Market:
http://www.androidblip.com/android-themes/anim-mod-root-136113.html
I clicked on the "fly in & flip" selection.
I will make a post requesting a stock rogers 2.2 zip of their /system/framework folder.
Is there anything else I'm missing, and once I get the /system/framework get it into the update.zip, how do I get it onto my SD card root, or do I just put it on the root of an external SD card?

I see its a paid app, so can't say whats in it. But since its into animations and stuff, most likely it messed up some files in ur framework folder. Send me the update.zip file after u update so I can cross check before u can flash it on ur phone.
Hi Diablo,
I wrote a new post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997233
Am I asking for the right thing?
Also, on the app page it says "Anim Mod changes the system framework files without touching your theme so if you constantly switch from ROM to ROM you can always get the animation you prefer the best."
Does this make anything simpler?
Thanks again for continuing to help me,
Alex

Yes. It says it changes files. I would NOT recommend any such app that changes framework files with/without knowledge, unless, there is a way backup plan at hand to revert to stock.
I normally take a nandroid backup of my ROM before playing with things like this, so in case things mess up, atleast there is a working copy of ROM.
Secondly, since u said u need contacts, I would recommend the following:
1. Install titanium backup (TiBu in short)
2. Backup "Contacts Storage"
3. Copy this folder "Titanium Backup" from sdcard to a safe location (e.g., ur computer)
This would backup ur contacts. So in case u mess up with something, u can always copy this folder to ur sdcard and restore using TiBu.
U can also backup all user apps and data so u can restore all ur apps and data in these kinds of situations. But do NOT backup or try to restore any system data except the one contacts storage I mentioned above.
Also, be warned, contacts data cannot be moved this way between different versions of ROM like 2.1 and 2.2. But u can move between 2.2 and 2.2.1. I was also able to restore this data on 2.3.3 gingerbread.
Personally, I now use "Sprite Backup" to backup and restore my data.
Thanks for your effort yesterday Diablo. I decided to odin flash the stock rogers 2.1, repartition, and upgraded to 2.2 via kies. I lost my contacts, but couldn't go any longer without the phone. I'm gonna back everything up right now!

Sorry to hear that Alex. This time make sure u backup "Contacts Storage" in Tibu when u r on 2.2.
Else use Sprite Backup or anything similar to help backup.

[Q] Best way to backup and restore kernel only

Curious what the best way to backup just the kernel of a ROM is, to potentially restore it after experimentation with other kernels?
Something more elegant than nandroid the whole ROM, then wiping and restoring everything.
My prior understanding was that the kernel is the boot.img of a nandroid backup. So I suppose making a nandroid backup of just the boot section could do this. I forget though if a nandroid restore automatically wipes other parts (system/data/etc.) if it's just restoring a small part of it. I don't think so?

Problem is that dependant WiFi modules are stored on /system - so to get a proper backup you'd need to grab the boot.img, and the modules and then create an update.zip.
Try Kernel Manager from the market. I've never used it, but I believe that is the intent behind it...
Thanks for the replies. Good to know that there are some /system files that aren't included on boot.img--that saves a lot of potential havok that would have been caused by my misinformed tweaking.
No, kernel manager doesn't have kernel backup ability. Just the ability to download and flash supplied kernels. If there's a 'stock' kernel supplied, yes, it's easy to reflash that. But no way I can find to make your own kernel from what's already installed.

Well that's easy... just grab the boot.img and contents of /system/lib/modules from your rom zip and make your own update.zip. You can surely find how to do that.

[RELEASE][NANDROID] Rooted Factory-Stock ROM

Hi all!
Well, thanks to everyone for their donations-- without you, this wouldn't be possible.
I present to you, one stepping stone towards custom ROMs: the shipping ROM on the device, backed up as a NANDROID.
What is this?
This is the shipping ROM on the device. There are no changes to this ROM besides being rooted.

How do I use this?
Extract the contents of this file to your SD card (external SD card) under
Code:
/clockworkmod/backups/
and you will end up with a
Code:
/clockworkmod/backups/revo_stock
folder.
Run Clockwork on your device, and select "Backups and Restore" then "Advanced Restore". Select "revo_stock" as the backup to restore, and choose to restore ONLY "system".
(You can also restore boot.img, but it is unnecessary, and I only left that in there for future use.)

What does this backup include?
This backup ONLY includes /system and boot.img. There is no recovery.img in this backup, nor is there a /data or /cache.

Will I lose my apps or information if I restore this backup?
No you will not, this backup will not touch your /data partition.

Why is this useful?
Accidentally erased something important in /system?
Removed something and now 4g Hotspot doesn't work?
Restore this, and it'll fix that... of course all the stock OS will come back, but hey-- you get a second chance

Extract through windows and put on your SD card in the proper folder.
its telling me that i have a md5 mismatch!!! i will try downloading it again.
Thanks cube please keep up the hard work! I wish I could do something to help other then sending some $$$ I would love to help bring the revolution along.
Viva la revolution.
Did anybody use this yet. i tried and it says my md5 does not match. i tried numerous times
Haven't tried it yet but I checked the MD5 against the images and they are correct.
Ah, sorry, forgot to state select "Advanced Restore" or whatever it's called-- JUST restore system.img.
If you select "Restore" it looks for the /data and recovery.img in the nandroid.md5 file, and when it doesn't find it, it errors out with an md5 error.
I'll edit the instructions now...
Just tested this. I can't advanced restore the system.img either. Comes back with MD5 mismatch. I can restore my own backups without a hitch however.
[Edit] I forgot to mention. There's a carriage return on the Rooted Factory-Stock ROM MD5 file. Removing it didn't seem to matter. I was thinking that maybe it was the culprit.
Agh! you just gave me the answer... I saved it in windows, rather than linux, so the line endings are wrong...
If you're able to, just open the file nandroid.md5 in Notepad++ or something like it, and remove the extra blank line, and change the line endings to UNIX style.
Thanks, I'll re-upload the .zip when I'm on a faster connection.
The actual .img files themselves are good, though.

Is there a version of this with everything? In other words, not just system but data, etc. I somehow am stuck in CWR...don't have a nandroid backup. I pushed this to the right place on the SD card, did the system restore, but it still repeatedly boots into CWR. Is there anything that will do a FULL restore instead of just system?
Thanks in advance.

Hm, so you did a data wipe from within Android. Yep, that'll get you stuck in CWR, but it's not a problem with the backup, it's that the LG bootloader isn't happy with Clockwork.
When installing Clockwork, did you make the p8 backup?
so im having the same problem i even started a thread too but im an idiot and didnt make that p8 backup because the md5sum didnt match so i stopped there but clockwork still seem to flashed to the phone now im in clockwork everytime i boot up was wondering any way to work around this if not guess imma just get a new phone until there is a way

There is a way, I just haven't written it into an easy-to-use program yet.
For now, if you haven't made a p8 backup, the easiest method is for you to come on IRC and have me adb into your phone and fix it for you.
If I get a spare moment though, I will work on a stuckinclockwork.zip that you can flash using clockwork to get you out of clockwork.

[Q] How to pack all apps in 1 file to instal from recovery

can anyone please explain me how to pack all apps in one file..so that i can install it everytime i flash any nightly and dont have to install individually..like gapps, setcpu all in one..thanks
So this is the link..those who want can go thru his process..after searching for lot of tym this s what i got..rying it..nd will post the result..
http://www.londatiga.net/it/how-to-create-android-update-zip-package/
You can make a backup of your applications the system partition and then install them through ADB, using the switch for automatic installation.
or simply make a backup with titanium backup =)
You may also use File Expert. It is free less invasive then Titanium Backup.
File Expert can backup all Your apps and then restore. You should only tick "silent install" in settings.
in other thread i read a guy mentioned that he packed all his apps together along with gapps and installs it from erecovery..that is much easier..and the whole point of it is that i dont want to install any software and just want it to b packed in one..i dnt want to instal even titanium backup also after flashin ..trust me i flash almost daily from skang to cm7 n20 to nova n wat not..i just luv doin that..plz help i want a rar, tar, kdz i dnt know watever format it may become..i just want it to b flashed from erecovery ..
thanks for suggesting titanium and file explorer but that is smething i dnt want..
Copy the .apk and files you want to be installed in the .zip archive using store as archiving mode, before flashing CM7.
Be carefull to the paths.
Example: favorite_ringtone.ogg goes to system\media\audio\ringtones)
This way I managed to integrate CM7 with my desired apps (ex: changed Rommanager with RomManager premium, ADW with ADW EX), Nova Kernel, stock ringtones and media files, custom bootanimation etc.....
Then flash it, as usual, with CWM in recovery.
Regarding strictly to what you asked, search forum and internet about making a update.zip. I searched myself, downloaded a few files, but I got lazy....
Anyway, keep us posted about your project.

This is the way to do it. I have a custom zip too replacing most apps, boot animation, etc. Even libs, modules, etc.
If only apps that you want to add, you can modify the (google addon) gapps zip.

You can also try replacing framework-res there. AFAIK, permissions are taken care of once flashed.
And also the gnote lib that you mentioned. I took the lib and modules of nova kernel once, and they all worked. Even the nova script in terminal worked. Minus the governors. All files in the folder of nova kernel I injected it to the nightly #20

[Q] Make an image from a rom

Hello all,
I'm wondering if there's any way of make an image from my phone, with all the softwares and data already installed and configured (just like Macrium Reflect do on Windows). Just like a backup, so if I have any kind of problem, I just have to flash my .zip into the phone again.
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried ClockworkModRecovery?
Fruit cake maker is a better solution for your question. Plus if you name the .zip it creates pg58img.zip and place it on your SD card root. Then you don't even need cwm.

just make a backup through CWM menu, it will backup EVERYTHING on your phone and save to clockworkmod/backup/..... in your sdcard. The backup included few .tar files instead of a single .zip, but the result is the same --- you can restore it (overwrite everything) to your phone at anytime.

When you backup with the recovery menu(power+volume button simultaneously pressed until u see the android picture), you will find this backup files either in the EXT SD card or the Internal SD depending the CWM version, in the clockworkmod/backup. All you have to do is to get into recovery mode and restore.....it works perfectly
It worked!
That was just what I needed!
Many thanks for your help guys....
