Hi there
I am trying to organise a discussion on which android release is best for the milestone/droid. When comparing try and talk about:speed, usability, gaming, battery life and so forth.
P.s anyone getting lagging 3d gaming on gb?

Best overall experience performance/game/battery-wise is Eclair (2.1) for sure. If you don't mind loosing some features on GMAPS and not getting the latest GMAIL client. But you need a good sd-card and sd-ext or just not use much apps on the phone, as eclair doesn't support app2sd natively. Ah, good old time where I could play Angry Birds, pause it, open You Tube, watch a video, go back to Angry Birds which was still loaded in memory, no need to reload everything and start again....
I've heard bout that. Honestly I would go back to eclair if it wasn't for the lack of flash and apps2sd. I really don't understand what makes gb so slow

i think the best blance between features and snappynes is 2.2 . it has a lot of additional features and it runs good. i personally love 2.3 because of the look (im a big fan of the screen-off animation) but its too slow.
Interesting. I know this sounds stupid but what's actually new in 2.2 (excluding jit and apps2sd). And on 2.1 shouldn't that be the best for gaming if you can find a rom that has jit and supports ext2. And can't you get flash from the market anyways?

JIT takes up a lot of RAM that Milestone doesn't have =)
best performance is still Eclair... Official Froyo is laggy...

From what I have heard, Eclair has a 30FPS cap, so my favorite would be Froyo. I disable JIT on all ROMs as I don't notice much of a difference.

But surely 30fps is still rather smooth

Hi guys !
I'm a new owner of Motorola Milestone and mine came with stock 2.2.1 Froyo installed.
The thing is that despite having Froyo the interface looks just like 2.0. Main screen contains old grey tab that slides up the screen to reveal apps, camera interface is old too and there is no tethering.
I've already checked motorola update software to see if there's anything new, but apparently not and right now I don't have time to root the phone to install custom ROM (2.2 or 2.3). Is there anything I can do to get the new interface working?
Hi, have you tried Cronos Ginger ver.1.4 b4?
I just installed Plants vs Zombies on my Milestone.
No problems on my Milestone running Cronos Ginger ver.1.4 (with my Autokiller Memory settings).
See this video below:
http://youtu.be/tmCMIKdrjGE
I have also played Modern Combat 2 on the same ROM too and have completed the game.
Isn't the Cronos Ginger a custom ROM that needs rooted phone ?
Sorry for such a question, but I'm new to the subject.

This is not official version (from PopCap). Official needs about 180mb ram free to run.
Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wFqYRzC2fc and see difference.
Modern Combat 2 is working fine with 80-90mb ram free.
But still, has anyone met with such issue when stock froyo has an old interface a'la 2.0 ?
Get ADW launcher from the market. It is the lightest launcher for motorola milstoen
guys ive noticed something.
Of all the roms i think cronos runs the FASTEST. but the launchers seem to lag quite a lot. On miui (laggiest milestone rom) adw is fine(ish). But on cronos it lags
EDIT: Hmmm just checked my phone again. The lag is getting better. Spooky
Android 2.2 keeps alot apps in memory and I task killers like Adao doesn't works as good as it works on 2.1. I miss 2.1 but I'm loving the new apps on 2.2 but the memory management system is poor.
lol that video of PvZ is pathetic. My iPod Touch 4G runs that smoking smooth on its 256mb ram + 800mhz processor and retina display.
The milestone simply cannot do it.
With that said, a 512mb device can do it MUCH better. Even my Nexus S struggles since it only boots with 100mb free. A lot of crap gets killed.
I don't get why Android apps need SO MUCH RAM.
So which version actually uses the smallest amount of RAM?
Right now I'm on 2.2.1 and most of the time I have about 40MB free.
Well, it's not really about how much RAM is free, it's more like how much RAM can be freed in case you need it. So, be it Eclair or Froyo, you get around 30-40 megs free, but Eclair can free 120MB easy, without killing essential apps, while Froyo can do 85-90 with JIT and 100-105 without JIT. Unfortunatelly it is exactly those 15-20MB of RAM that we need to keep out home screen alive, or read and SMS without killing Angry Birds.
And how about Gingerbread? I'm currently waiting for new 'RTM' version of CyanogenMod 7.1 from Nadlabak and I think I'll give it a try.
Hi!
My MM is on CM7 RC10. I've tried a lot of gameloft games, gun bros and others like Age of Winds and only could play to Asphalt5 and Raging Thunder.
Any of you could play heavy or HD games on his MM?

Maybe I give a try to cronosginger, but right now, I don't have many time to change my rom only for play the games . Anyone knows a walkaround to play something on CM7?
that rom is not only for gaming, its very stable n the quickest ive used .. n the best part is its battery life ..
HEY! you know! I'm having that problem since I've changed to custom firmware, in the beggining I used stock eclair and ALL heavy games run without problems, then I changed to custom firmware (now on CM7 RC10) and I have problems and crashes on most Gameloft games, BUT all the emulators work excelently, this is little weird, so can a DEV answer that?? pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease
Oh! I forgot! each CM7 versions were compatible with other games, for example, Spliter Cell Conviction ran on CM7 RC5, but did not work on next versions, nor even on RC4, just on RC5... I insist: weird!

Excuse me roohanjs, I didn't want to said that cronosginger was only to play or CM7 is better than cronosginger. What I was trying to say is I'm fine with CM7, and now don't have time to backup, download other ROM, read about it, install, tweak, load again all apps, etc. etc.
Maybe the weekend I could try cronosginger, but meanwhile I hope someone could give me a tip on CM7.

Hi Hearts king101.
I forgot to mention about SuperCharger. I've try it, and tested diferents scripts but the games always crash after intro video or after a few seconds of playing.
I use CM7 RC10, set the vm heapsize to 42 and I am able to play Modern Combat 1&2, the Settlers HD and the normal market games like Angry Birds without stuttering. I havn't even aplied the V6 supercharger mod. Oh, and I overclocked to 1,1Ghz
Just make sure you don't have to much useless stuff running in the background. You can prevent apps from running on boot in the latest versions of CM7

How do you prevent apps from running on boot with CM7? I look inside all settings menus but couldn't find anything.
My MM it's overclocked at 1GHz and vm heapsize is 40MB. I try with JIT enabled and disabled and any of both settings make a difference playing heavy games.
In the CM7 settings menu there is an entry for application management (I have the dutch language enabled, so I don't knoow what the exact english translation is), and you should enable this. Once enabled you can change the app settings in the app management menu in the normal settings menu. Just click on a app and scroll down to the bottom and there you can enable and disable settings. This only works for the apps you installed yourself. Pre installed apps can't be altered.
And I have JIT enabled, thrown the standart ADW launcher away and installed GO Launcher EX wich is in my opinion much faster.

I'm bored so much everyday something has broken.
With stock rom I can't play dungeon defenders with my PowerSGX 540
And with sucked balls iphone is smooth on this game.
With CM7 browser is laggy and stock kernel is so poor. Look fps in quadrant. F...k quadrant score but just look what a poor fps. After flashing glitch kernel dungeon defenders is so smooth but now it brings millions of bugs.
And now accelerometer doesn't work great it lags on CM7 or MIUI with all type of kernels. And these days are end of gingerbread. We still don't have a great gingerbread or froyo.
I have a great GPU chip great CPU chip I will put all of them into my somewhere. F...k samsung sorry for offtopic I bored so much.
Now CM9 will come with a big "0". Fix bugs fix bugs fix bugs ... And CM10 + a big 0 fix bugs fix bugs.
When can I use this sh*t?
My next phone will be a Windows Phone 7.5 or something. SGS FOR SALE.
LOL. 10 Chars.

This guy has a point. I play with a phone, not games though. That's why Android is perfect phone for me
I am really wondering what games he is gonna play on Windows Phone !?
To those joking with OP...can you guys name one gingerbread firmware released by Samsung that is not laggy..buggy etc etc.
Well I'm using the following combination and it works like a charm!
ODEXED Stock JVR + CF-Root + Thunderbolt 1.9 60MB LMK + Arc Launcher 2.0.
I've got pretty high FPS in games and Quadrant scores are like 2400 - 2500.
Maybe you should try it? I'm playing 9mm wich is a 1.6GB game and works pretty good!
I don't play games that often in mobile, might try the above mentioned combo. I need a firmware that works, trusty alarm clock, etc.Samsung does not give a damn about the bugs on recent firmwares that's the reason i feel with the thread starter.

Just tried out Dungeon Defenders. Got real laggy the first time I played at wave 3 of the first level but I restarted and it ran perfect after that. Pretty fun game. Shame if I have to restart every time though as I usually only restart when I install new kernels and stuff or go for weeks of up time.
Big bottleneck with this phone is lack of RAM, and Dungeon Defenders wants a lot of it. It says 256 MB free required, well that's tough with 330-350 MB usable. I run Semaphore bigmem with 352 MB RAM (with stock JVT odexed) and I noticed after exiting the game that 205MB was free (in the 'manage applications' 'running' tab) and I'm guessing the game was using most of that. It's a very demanding app though, most run just fine. The only problems with RAM I've had previous to this is that if do lots of stuff Slacker in the background will get killed from time to time and that may have been due to LMK settings that I was using at the time.
SGS is a great phone but it would be even better if Samsung had given us 512MB usable RAM, then programs that need 250MB would run no sweat. Seems like 1GB of RAM is going to be required real soon for people that want to run the demanding games. My SGS has served me well but I'll be eyeing the new phones with 1GB in the new year. Shame because other than the RAM, and perhaps SD card speed but that is more of a want than a need, I could easily hold off until the following year.

Theres no need to bash someone like that. He's got a valid point in terms of games and the lags inspite of the superb hardware our phone has. After all this hardcore specs...gingerbread released by samsung is ****...yeah i know theres CM7...but come on...lets just talk about phone thats just out of the box...
i also just downgraded to froyo 2.2.1 jsd yesterday...its awesume for playing games......and i also applied supercharger script...i get lot of free ram.....
i had also tried jpk but jsd is awesume...
Well, every time I exit 9mm wich is a very demanding game, I get like 179 free ram. Also, the ARC launcher is very optimized to run on low ram (wich makes it lightweight) and doesn't redraw like TouchWiz 3 bull****.
I can't try Dungeon Defenders couse I'm out of internal SD storage all because I have a lot of games installed on my 8GB version xD.
Quadrant scores mean little to nothing in reality though.
Whole thread should change the topic to:
I'm very disappointed because I had no idea what I'm buying and what for I will use it.
well, for me riptide gp, dungeon defenders, shadowgun etc. run perfectly on jvt+doctorz rom v9+thunderbolt tweaks 1.9.1 50 lmk+loopy tweaks+semaphore kernel 1.8.2 at 1200mhz and they are like butter on 1300mhz. u can say my sgs has a bit of a better processor then most sgs out their. i get 4000 quad. easily with this combo. i am very satisfied with gingerbread and i believe windows phone 7 doesnt even these high graphic games so its just a waste of money to move on windows phone or even ios.

Hi , that´s my opinion
Twice 10.1 or JB port , have a problem with battery duration (and other minor bugs)
the game play are so laggy ,and you really have a slow experience with diary use.
AOkp I think that is trustworthy to the JB use. but the same with lag .
Thanks for your work !!!! and I hope you get new roms updates.
Sorry for my english...
jelly bean requires a lot of more RAM than GB. That's why there is some lag, I suggest to use smartassv2 as CPU governor if you need performance, if you need to save battery use interactiveX.

Is it possible to fix the camera now?. Since preview problem seems to be known now?
i tried installing cm-10.1-20130629-UNOFFICIAL-jena today but get an error 7.
factory reset, cache partition and dalvik cache have been wiped, i`m using cwm 6.0.3.2.
versioncm-10.1-20130611-UNOFFICIAL-jena works without any problems.
what could i be doing wrong ?
edit: i returned to the working version and flashed it new because i finally wanted to get rid of the gapps package i installed before.
however even after flashing 0611 again gapps still seem to be on my system.
do i have to wipe anything else i`m not aware of ? the target is a cyanogen 0611 or 0629 without any gapps
do you have cwm 6.0.3.2 build 4 ?
ohh! it`s build 3 actually!
thx a lot! will give it a try at once
no problem
it worked perfectly thanks again!
the only thing i`m still facing is that gapps still seem to be on the system from a previous installation, although i wiped the 3 settings mentioned above.
is 0629 supposed to have the play store, services and other google named services? can i get rid of them somehow?
edit: solved, i had to format /system /data /cache. now gapps and other parts of the previous installations are definitely gone. happy happy!
The performance greatly depends on the game you're playing. Currently with CM10 20130629 (the NFC patch doesn't work, BTW) I have good performance with Icy Tower 2, but micro lags on Jetpack Joyride. Of course both of these games run perfectly on stock, but Icy Tower 2 has some graphical glitches not appearing on JB. But Jetpack Joyride is a lazy port from iOS and it can stutter even on better phones. But the overall performance is just fluid. Will test Vice City later to see if a lot has changed since April 2013, when I lastly tested VC on CM10.
those "micro lags" are because of RAM. I had an old PC with 256MB (!) RAM like 5-6 years ago, when I played NFSMW, I would get freezes/lags each 3-5 seconds, the loading screen took ages to load, then I put in another 512MB and everything was fine. No lags/freezes, loading screens didn't load forever etc.
On cm10 and cm9 for less ram usage i went to Developer options, scrolled to the bottom and set background processes to 1 or 0.
There are no these options on cm10.1, right? I dont know did you mean slow ramread/write or high usage with old pc example...
Sent from my GT-S6500D using xda app-developers app
Ahh...the old-school NFSMW - one of my favorite games of all time.
But Android manages RAM differently than Windows, so 512MB shouldn't be a problem because it runs file on stock 2.3.6.
Looks like Jetpack Joyride stutters when there are certain sprites drawn. Seems to be some kind of GPU thing. If GTA VC runs better than this, I'll uninstall this crap.
That was just an example that RAM matter a lot in games. Temple Run 2 uses >100MB. Imaging what more demanding games require. I have about ~50-60MB free RAM when the phone is idle.
I have 210 at idle and still same lag and low fps as it is when 120 is free
Edit: cm9 has more than 100mb/s faster ram read speed than cm10, .1, aokp. And it has performance as good on 800mhz as cm10 has at 1.05ghz. Stock rom read is 500 mb/s, cm9 450, cm10 350
Sent from my GT-S6500D using xda app-developers app
Well, looks like that's the problem. I noticed that actually earlier when people were posting benchmark results, everything was higher than on stock, except for the RAM speed.
I guess there's nothing to do about it? It's all in the kernel.
Probably gpu performance depends on ram speed... So improving ram speed will improve gaming performance and overal performance of the device in cm9, cm10, cm10.1 and aokp.

thanks for your job TheWhisp CM 10.1 is awesome like you thank you very much
I don't know which games you play but I play various gba roms and hacks via my boy emulator and it is very smooth. those temple run etc. do not appeal to me. If they were then probably I would have bought a better phone. but know this. Mini 2 is not a phone to play games.
oh and a question to @TheWhisp cm10.1 or aokp. whats the difference. which one do you prefer?

Hi all guys, I want to ask everyone to help me understanding why I my device is a bit laggy. Ok, I don't have a nexus, but I have an amazing quad core processor, a tegra 3 chipset!!
And even if flash custom ROMs I have this lag feeling, and not only feeling sometimes. I will be more accurate.
1) When I install apps or uninstall apps, I have some lags, now OK the phone is doing a big task but it is a bit too laggy.
2) Switching between apps can be laggy some times, and not just with big apps.
3) I have noticed that even having not much apps working background, the phone give me this impression of lagness, I have 1gb ram and a quad core, I get angry if it start to run slowly only for some apps working background, I mean the hardware is powerfully enough.
After all I must say that I have tryed these ROMs.
Carbon, slimbean, liquid smooth, and CyanogenMod (that is a bit better on performance).
My favourite is slimbean because I feel it stable.
And I have tryed most of the kernels, like werewolf, optimous prime, and iodak at last, and I like this last one.
Can someone help me understand this? Thank you guys!
Ah, sorry for my not clear English :S

I have tried kitkat and it is nice, but it's not much stable so I have chosen to return to stock (zaiben rom) with iodak kernel and I'm impressed, it is fast and smooth with this kernel.
Anyway I think that all Roms that we have are unstable in their way, so I prefer stock where all works.
