Hey, i am currently on Galnet's Miui v2 and i have been on Miui ever since MCG v1. My problem is even though these were all great roms that my compass seems to be not working. I installed the Compass App from the market and North is everywhere expect in the North
I am aware that the changelog of Galnet Miui v2 indicates that the compass and accelerometer should be working flawlessly but mine seems to be defect.
Has anybody an idea how to fix this?
I have the same problem with CM7 on which is MIUI based. I tried to calibrate it few times, but it didn't helped, so i think it's a bug in CM7.
Hi!
I have installed Galnet MIUI v2 rom and have the same problem with compass. And my GPS can't find my precise position, the accuracy is about 1500-2000m. I'm from Europe and does anebody knows what kind of modey is used in this rom. If it's not european, then how can i swith to one. Btw, does anybody knowswhere can i get google maps?
Tnx!
Google maps? On the market if u don't have it, then you'll have to flash gapps.

And you can find more modems here. They should work for miui too. I'm from europe too and i'm using the cyanogenmod default - jv9. Just flash them in cwm... Try more modems and you'll see which works better for you. And to know what modem u r using: go to settings -> about phone and look at baseband version.

I've found .zip file with gapps? but it must be installed throug Recovery vode, is there any way to install them like normal apps, i just don't want to mess things up. And i just need the goole maps and Locator, is it possile to install only them without the rest? Could you tell me about the modem, should i install the jvp or jvo if i'm in europe, or the default one is fine. If i go everything right, then the modem should be installde through CWR?
Gapps:
You have to install it through recovery mode, it shouldn't mess anyting up, but if you are scared, you can still do a nandroid backup. Install this one. If you don't want to install all, you can try playing with the zip, but i won't recommend you to do so or you can try to delete the apks from /system/app. But SGS has enough space for apps, so there's no reason why to do that. I thing you also need Market...not only google maps and locator...at least for installing google maps and locator .
Just flash the zip though CWM and install desired apps from market...
Modem:
I'm from Europe too and i use cm default - jv9. Try more modems and compare signal, battery life, etc... Then use the one which worked best for you and post it here for others . And yes, flash it from CWM as usual.

This seems as it's a network provided location, not the gps one. Is your gps indicator (in status bar...) blinking? If so, wait 'till it stops blinking and then you'll have gps provided location... This can take few minutes
Thank you, that relly helped a lot! I guess i'm going to stik to jvk for a couple of days to see how it works. I'm using galnets miui v2, it has market app and gmail, that's why i was askig about installing gapps separately, though they could cause issues. Going to give it a try. Tnx again!
So you don't need to flash gapps, just install desired apps from market...And if i helped a lot, you can hit my thx button
I know that, but they aren't shown in the market.
To get back on topic here, has anyone gotten the compass to work? I don't get a compass reading at all. I have tried re-flashing the JVP modem, the compass still doesn't give a reading.

Got it, found this googl app in the web. After installation icons maps latitude, laces, and navigation apperared. Exept navigation(for some reason it stuks on navigation avaliability check) everything works fine. But my GPS still can't fund me precise position, it jumps for one place to anotheraround the place where i am. Should i flash another modem? Maybe you couls adviseme how to fix this.
Tnx.
I would try different modems (flash in CWM).

Hi Guys, I've done a search and come up with nothing.
I've been on Andriod for 2 years had 7 devices in that time, rooted them all, Very comfy with Flashing ROM's etc.
PROBLEM: Some apps make my screen "Flash" repeatedly.
SOFTWARE BEHAVIOUR - The apps that have done this so far are, Facebook, Gallery, Doubletwist & Quadrant. The App will load fine, display the landing menu and all seems well. Sometimes i can even use an app for 30 seconds and all seem fine. Then i will click a Facebook post, or a "pile" of pictures in Gallery and it will start FLASHING
DEVICE BEHAVIOUR When one starts to do it the Back & Menu keys no longer work, but Home will always return me to the front screen. Phone functions normal (but App is still in same state). If you kill the app then it opens where up where you left off but once you start to navigate it starts flashing again.
I've experienced this problem on:
CheckROM
CriskeloRomNOTE
KINGDROID ELEGANCE NOTE (Current ROM)
ACTIONS TAKEN SO FAR.
Uninstalled / Reinstalled the apps (FB and Quadrant) - still comes back.
Flashed Different ROM's
I'm as close to stock as any of the ROM's above are. I'm not using any 3rd party launchers or any customisation software.
Any ideas guys

I would say that the stock rom be the first thing you try. Try and see if you have the issue the way Samsung had intended it to be used.

Yeah but that wouldn't make sense, if the unit was faulty then it would exhibit the behaviour all the time. The only problems I have are with the apps mentioned in the OP so therefore it couldn't be a hardware problem.

Quick update - (I dont normally have auto rotation on. It annoys me) However i just had it on to watch a video. I checked facebook and after a while it started to flash. I rotated the device and it stopped - weird.

If they exist in stock rom, too, it is hardware related, imho. You don't know which triggers the flashing of the screen. Maybe it occurs only on a specific temperature, or CPU operation these apps produce.

this thing bugs me a lot. why costum gb roms have slow wifi speed? i tried cyanogenmod 7 - slow wifi, then tried cm9 - wifi is ok. but games are very laggy so i'm back at gb with gamerz rom but wifi is slower again, but acceptable. so i'm thinking about restoring original wifi drivers/settings to have normal speed wifi but i don't know is it possible and which files i need to overwrite. to mention i don't have slow wifi, it's 1 MB/sec download, and it needs a few secs to load google, when i'm at ics or stock gb it loads instantly.

Its strange you should mention this as I only got this phone today and I flashed a custom rom and my hsdpa speeds were awful , like 15 k a second max, I tried a few others same result, im now back on stock and its flying, i know it isn't WiFi but its got to be related in weird way !
Custom Rom uses modem that might not always be the best for your region. If you think your stock Rom has better speed, try to download the modem file for that rom and flash it after you flash the custom rom.

Yes these are only for cyanogenmod roms and ics I believe, I'm not sure if the modems can be extracted from the original firmware for use with gingerbread but hopefully there will be a guru who can tell us if it can be done and how to do it, maybe there are some modems for 2.3 on here somewhere, I will have a look as this is something I would like as well ! I would migrate to ics but my data speeds are awful on it!

Hi there! I was excited to get S5830IXXLK3_S5830IBTULK1_BTU firmware from samfirmware.com and flash it and use the latest custom kernel from Rafael.Baugis with it.
When I flashed 201212101860-E3-boot.img it completely killed my service. I enter the settings and it reports out of service. I says there is signal strength but I cant connect to the network or anything. I am on 3 (three) [H3G]
I tried 2 other custom kernels also: odin-kernel.tar from hell_lock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=20221470 and: PDAnitKernelNoSplash.tar from axyllum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026654)
Neither worked and did the same as Rafael's kernel. I thought a lot about it and tried flashing different basebands etc to see if that changed anything but to no avail I was stumped once again.
I went to a s5839i F/W from samfirmware.com S5839IBULE2_S5839IVOPLE1_VOP and the kernel works fine with that so in conclusion its the latest XXLK3 F/W that stops it working? Did Samsung 'fix' XXLK3 to not work with custom kernels? guess I go back to the old F/W and such :crying:
How can I solve this and get the kernel to work with XXLK3? I tried Alucard1989pl Deodex version of XXLK3 and same problem no service.
EDIT: Tried GT-S5830i Czech Republic 2012 November Android 2.3.6 S5830IXXLK2 S5830IXEZKL1 So far it works so its not the latest but its fine with the customs =D shame about XXLK3 though
I have a s5839i that came with stock BULE2 firmware
It now has XXLK3 (XXLK1 baseband) and it works fine with rafaelbaugis
Samsung will never "fix custom kernels", they directly allow people to modify their kernel by posting the sourcecode on their site
What country and carrier do you have?
Does the stock XXLK3 kernel give you service?
Interesting

I am in the UK and my Carrier is H3G it is also the s5839i PAYG from three.co.uk it orginally had PDA: S5839iXXLD4 CSC: S5839iH3GLC2 MODEM/Phone: S5839iNELD1 but I lost that as I could not/or know how to back up from the phone as its my first Android device and indeed first smartphone too.
Maybe there is a particular bug with my firmware? though, neither XXLK3 nor the deodexed one worked, then again maybe its the CSC?

Yes. I would not have even bothered flashing the custom if it did not
I went to S5830i firmware to get CWM recovery using the David Jacket method but that was the only time it worked as the latest CWM kernels from Raf don't work on my device they jus stick on first screen. The e3 ones are ok though. Kinda buged me as I bought the CWM recovery pro app when I had it enbedded and working not I cant use :crying:
I'm sure there is a bug with this firmware, also see this thread. dNik17, the reason you can't get service even though you have signal is because for some reason, Android refuses to read our device's IMEI number on XXLK3. When your service was dropping out, if you had looked at your IMEI number in phone settings I can pretty much guarantee you it would have been blank at that time.
I have experienced this problem with the stock XXLK3 kernel as well as Rafael's and Hell Lock's. It does seem to be somewhat kernel dependent (and also possibly ROM dependent), for instance if you flash between stock and custom kernels it often fixes or recreates the problem. If you go into testing mode and turn off the radio and then turn it back on that sometimes fixes it also.
However, I think I may even have experienced it with stock ROM, stock kernel. I tried lots of different variations of ROMs and kernels in an attempt to nail down what exactly is going on but the issue seems to be quite unpredictable at times and difficult to repeatedly reproduce. I do know that XXLK3 has an updated stock kernel so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
XXLK2 was fine and had no such problem.
@makeyourself thanks for the info! I am currently reverted to XXLK2 with latest Rafael.Baugis, I gave up hope of it working properly xD. I did have a back up of the partition with the IMEI info in but I did not try restoring it. I backed it up using galaxy toolboox.
I see your cooking a rom!!! good luck with that, I have tried using the kitchen a few times and but I cant seem to get the rom imported properly from the stock rom from samfirmware. I wish you more luck than I had!

Thank you mate, appreciate it :good:. Yeah I did use dsixda's kitchen just to kick things off and deodex the ROM. I use Debian, a Linux distro day-day anyway and I think that helps when it comes to extracting firmwares in tar format etc.
Yeah, the XXLK3 issue is a bit of an odd one, I don't think the efs partition is being corrupted or wiped as the IMEI number comes straight back if you switch kernels / ROMs / firmwares or occasionally just by effectively rebooting the phone. For whatever reason the ROM or the firmware is just refusing to read the efs information that is still sitting there intact. I'm sure someone will work out exactly what's going on soon anyway!
you flashed the "PHONE"(MODEM) in Odin? i think was the Modem.md5 , it comes from other country, i had that problem, just flash the Modem.md5 of my country (colombia)(MODEM_S5830M_WHLE2.tar)

I tried many different modems as I thought that was the logical issue but none worked with the custom kernels and XXLK3. The only time I had XXLK3 working was on the stock kernel. I am guessing that there is some difference in XXLK3 kernel that is not addressed in the custom kernels yet.
I would concur that its a problem reading the IMEI.
XXLK2 (Czech) is working nice for me atm with XXLK1 modem.
I think its wise to stick with the XXLK2 firmware at the moment.
There is definitely something weird with the S5830i, when I flashed the deodexed lk3 from this site it simply refused to boot until I flashed the Rafael img and kernel. It does have perfectly fine service though.

I agree its working nice for me at the moment. I am using the deodexed version from Alucard1989pl :highfive:
I've learned to stay away from custom kernels because each of them are unidimensional - developers use a source code from Samsung that's always incomplete and behind the release, and each dev. works for his device, that might be a S5830c (Rafael), a Chinese S5830i (hell_lock) or the more common among users here Indian S5830i. Guess what? each variant is different, something might work on one (phone book contacts, headphones, signal strenght, 3g) but not on others. That's why I don't approve the use of "universal" next to "kernel" - sure it boots all of them, but do everything works?
I would prefer kernel developers join the android kernel kitchen project, and find ways to add their mods there, so that every user could mod their own kernel.
When it comes to custom roms, you should never flash a full wiping package (repartition) that was not meant for your phone. Always Splitfus the new rom, and replace csc, phone and bootloader with your original ones.
Hi Guys,
I am a Galaxy S user. My Galaxy S was bought in Finland and still running (basically stuck with) Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU). The phone's hardware is just fine (except slow GPS) but it has become paninfully slow and sometime shutting down/restarting on it's own.
Is it a good idea to reset the existing GingerBread 2.3.6 or get a different ROM?
I am a total novice and have not tried any other ROMs on it. I did some research about the alternative ROMs but there are so many options it made me really confused.
Could you guys suggest any stable and fast option for my Galaxy S i9000?
Also, if you could guide how I could migrate to that particular ROM from present Gingerbread, it would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance for your support and for this great forum.

Btw I used Odin 3.1 and clockwork to root and Flashed ROM with Cm 10.1 stable.

if you want to stay to 2.3.6 you can just factory reset your phone
Try this
Shut your Android Galaxy S down (Power off) or remove Battery.
Now press Volume up, Home and Power together.
If the Samsung Symbol is coming up leave the Home Button.
Then there is a boot Menu
Volume Up and Down to Navigate , Home to select the chosen option. ( factory reset )
---------------
if you want to upgrade to ICS or JB rom
root your firmware , choose the right cf-root from this thread

Thank you mistrp74 and The Tox for the help.
I am still a bit confused, I cant seem to locate the right cf-root [Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU)] from the thread you mentioned.
One more thing, how is your experience of running the Custom Roms, is it much better than the Samsung Firmware? Does all the function work fine?
I will need a bit of spoon feeding in the beginning for the update... as I have never tried it before and I am scared of bricking my phone.
So, please don't give up on me

The right CF-Root is in the seond to last post on the first page I believe- if you can fnd the one for XXJW4, the one you need is right above it
Custom ICS/JB roms are definitely smoother in many ways, although bear in mind because stock Jelly Bean don't include them, both FM Radio and 3G video calling won't work by default (two features of stock roms, I guess AllShare is another if you use it like me). Otherwise every other function is stable and rock solid. Except for the CM10.2 builds, which are still in an initial stage, the JB roms here should have everything working fine.

I thought I bricked my phone... but then I installed Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU) using Odin and then installed plain vanilla ICS 4.0.3
Coming from Ginerbread 2.3.6 I find a lot of new things and the phone is also snappy and responsive... my old Galaxy S is acting almost like a new phone! So I am really happy.
Now that I am familiar with the process I am confident to tryout other ROMs...
I would like something simple, lightweight and fully-functional/bug-free.
So please let me know if there is any other better ROM I should try.
Thanks again guys!

Just one more question, what's your backup strategy that you guys use?
Or else it a lot of work to update each and every app... one by one... also what about the SMS, call log etc?

Because I'm a person who 1.) doesn't use too many apps and 2.) tries to be as economical as possible, I don't have a large amount to backup. My contacts and calendar are always through Google, and for SMS I use SMS Backup and Restore on Play Store. Call log I don't keep, because I'm not a person who really cares for call logs. I only have one other app, Colornote, and that's cloud-synced as well.
Everything else I need is in internal storage :3

More or less similar situation as TS
Hey guys,
Im in a more or less similar situation as the topic starter. My Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 has gotten slow and unresponsive with time.
I would like to update to a custom ROM, and got a little curious about the Slim Bean. But I feel a little unsure about how to proceed.
I'm currently running a custom Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM, my device is rooted. I flashed this ROM from the Froyo that came with the phone about 2 years ago. It's been so long since I flashed this, I need some directions, as Im afraid I will brick my device.
When I go to recovery mode I see it runs ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix.
Can I just put a Slim Bean 4.2 android version on my internal sd card and run "install zip from sdcard" in ClockwordMod? I would prefer to flash the latest stable version of Slim Bean, which would that be 4.2.2.build7-OFFICIAL?'
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Bootism
Best way to update from gb or even older to jb is imo the way over cyanogenmod.
Follow this tutorial for 10.1: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd
And then you can upgrade via cwm to the very good slim bean.

Thanks for the answer!
I recall reading about lots of issues with the lagfix and flashing ROMs. My file storage system is in ext4 instead of standard rfs, I think I should somehow undo this if I recall correct. Is this true?
Do you have an option to unlagfix in recovery?

Yeah, I can choose "voodoo lagfix" in recovery.
It has the following options:
- disable lagfix
- enable lagfix (default)
- /system lagfix on (default)
- /system lagfix off
- debug off (default)
- debug on
Enter disable lagfix and reboot

Ok, so I got Cyanogenmod 10.1.0 running! so far so good
Good job. Now you can flash a zip in cwm.

Yeah, it's a whole new world opening up. Old phone runs relatively smooth, at least way better than before thanks for helping. I will stay on this Cyanogenmod for a bit and explore. Can I just flash in any of the ROMs as .zip in CWM later? I will look for a lightweight ROM for my old phone, any suggestions?
