Samsung Captivate
GB 2.3.7
Cyanogen 7.1.0
Interested in flashing Cyanogen Nightly Builds in hopes of fixing a few bugs, so I used ROM Manager to try to backup current rom.
I get a message saying I must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing, and that I can install it through ROM Manager.
When I click install and choose Samsung Captivate from the drop-down menu, I get a message saying Samsung Captivate does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet.
What’s my next move?
First, Uninstall ROM manager it hasn't really worked since Android 2.1
So...you're on cm7.1 now? Just hold the power button and boot into recovery.... "backup and restore" is the section you're gonna use to make a nandroid.
If you're on stock you'll need to flash a custom kernel using Odin to get cwm before you can flash anything.
Thanks
Yeah, forgot about the issues I had with Rom Manager and Captivate while I was trying to flash cm7. It is now uninstalled. Also, didn't realize "backup" was an option in recovery menu. Finished with that part. Still not sure if flashing cm7 nightly builds is the way to go. Unclear about what I may lose in the process. Still reading up on it. Thanks again.

You won't lose anything, and it's the way to go. Flash ahead.
So reboot into recovery, choose install from sd card, find the file and flash it? Seems straight forward enough. Thanks

Yes, exactly like that. Additionally, it's always a good idea to do a nandroid in case anything goes wrong

OK. Done. Everything looks the same. Time will tell if any of the minor problems I was having have been fixed.
On another note, Rom Manager mysteriously reappeared among my apps. If Rom Manager doesn't support Captivate, why is it included in cm7 nightly builds? Also, can't figure out how to uninstall it like I did previously. I guess it's not hurting anything, just sitting there.
Never mind. I see how to uninstall it using Titanium.

hey guys Im a new to the whole rooting and flashing custom roms thing. I love my N1 and I figured it was time to start playing with it more then the usual out of the box customizations.
I rooted the phone using the one click root app:
(cant post the link since Im a new user)
and then installed the Rom Manager.
I then installed the ClockworkMod recovery like it says to do.
Then I performed a Backup of the Current Rom using the Rom Manager
then Downloaded CyanogenMod 6.0.0-RC2 along with the Google Apps add on.
once the download completed it says do you want to do a wipe and also asks option to back up current rom. I checked both boxes and the phone boots into recovery mode.
Now this is where Im confused on what to do. At first I wasnt sure it the Rom manager would auto load the new rom, so I let it sit for like 10 min and realized it wasnt doing anything. Then I pressed the power button and volume at this point it gives me 3 options ..
1) reboot
2) Wipe
3) load update.zip
First I did a reboot ... which did nothing but re boot the phone, then I applied the update.zip and it failed and then I went to the Cyanogen Mod wiki page
on there is said to: "Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset. "
so I did that and then tried to install the update.zip ... which failed ... and basically erased my phone like the noob I am
So can someone please help me and tell me what Im doing wrong? also I installed titanium back up this time around to back up my apps.
Sounds like ClockworkMod Recovery did not flash. Try flashing it again in Rom Manager.
Should have been posted in Q&A
Thank you. Ill try that.
Sorry for not posting in Q&A as i didnt know about it ... Im new here so please forgive me.
Might be Clockworkmod ROM Manager...
I had all sort of problems with 2.1.0.5 and can't use any of the backups I created with it (they just hang when I try to restore them).
Everything seems OK with 2.1.0.6 though...

I reflashed Clockworkmod and that fixed it ... it flash the CyanogenMod rom, but once I was on there the radio wouldnt work, to I went back in re flashed the recovery.

You had issues too? I couldn't restore any of my backups the other day as well.
Yeah, I was having random problems with my backups... took me a while to realize it was only my newer backups.
Finally worked out that it was the version of ROM Manager. Older versions work great, as does the latest...

CM requires the 4.06.00.12_7 radio. Go to settings - about and look at the baseband version, that is your radio version. Also keep in mind most ROM's will not setup your APN, you will have to do that manually. I thought CM did, but I have not used it in a while. I am addicted to Enomther's ROM.
ok so i have rooted my device today, now im trying to install darky's official port rom on my captivate, how do i install it from the recovery mode without hurting and bricking my phone in anyway. I saw a bunch of youtube videos which said to make a backup then wipe data and then installl the zip from sd.
Is this way correct or do i have to do something with odin3 with this rom?

If your phone is rooted and you have CWM on your phone just get to recovery and select install zip from sd card. Select where you put the ROM zip and select it. Simple as that. You can make a backup prior to installing the ROM from ROM manager if you want to do so. I personally do not do it anymore because I change so much and there are issues for restoring if you are not on the same kernel from the backup.
that failed
i tried that twice, installation aborted both times
It shouldn't have. You didn't rename the file to update.zip did you? Are you only rooted with no previous rom?
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
problemmmmm
ok by mistake i touched some touch buttons and it rebooted my phone and is stuck on recovery, everytime i restart/reboot in recovery.
should i pull the battery?
i can get
i can get into download mode
I would use odin one click to flash to 2.1. Then get into recovery mode and flash the rom.
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
can you
can you please guide me through it,like tell me what i have to do since i know nothing about this,

Sorry I had to get some sleep. What process did you do to fix your issue? And yes the video was what I was meaning for flashing using odin one click. Glad you got it fixed.

When I click on Backup Current Rom, in Rom Manger it will reboot me directly to the boot screen. Shouldn't it start to backup my Rom from this point? Am I missing something or just doing something wrong?
My phone is rooted and I am following this guide to a tee youtube.com/watch?v=M4OgvwETRyk
All I have done to my phone is made it possible to sideload apps, using mdDos.

Samsung Captivate i897
Rom Manager v3.0.0.7
CloclworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.2
Did you flash clockwork recovery
Yes I Think I Did It Right. I clicked on it in Rom Manager. And than it switched from v3.0.0.0 to v2.5.1.2. Is there anything else I need to do?
Go into recovery
With phone off
Hold vol up and down and power
When at&t screen comes up let go
Select reinstall packages
Repeat
Should now have green recovery
You can select to back up from there
Backup all
Thank you thank has backed everything up for me. I really appreciate your help. I was going to install cognition v3.** I was wondering if you have used, or heard anything good about this program. You seem like you know your stuff, so thats why I'm asking.

I'm running the newest Cognition ROM and I'm loving it. It is really the on captivate based ROM that I have seen around and as far as I can tell it is everything the stock rom should have been. Hope that helps.
(beware, noob here )
So, I've decided to flash CM7 nightly #127 (which seems to be the latest build) to my O2X...
I am completely new to this, so I am going to follow this tutorial: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_Optimus_2X:_Full_Update_Guide
As of now, I've successfully rooted my device using SuperOneClick (so much easier than the method described in CM tutorial), and I made some backups with Titanium Backup.
On the forums here I read you need to also use NVFlash... That it is better that Rom Manager.... But there is no mentions of it in the official CM tutorial... All I found was this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054492 but I'm not sure of what it does, and if it is necessary to use it when flashing CM...
So, what should I do? I already installed ROM Manager and flashed the recovery thingy... All I need is a external sd card (which I going to get today) to make the Nandroid backup, copy the CM zip on it and Flash it...
Is this procedure risky? Do I absolutely need to do it with NVFlash? Is it ok to do this as I already set up Rom Manager?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!
NVflash is not necessary, in fact not even needed. Just need the cm7 zip file which needs to be renamed to 'update.zip' and put it in the root of the sd card. I think it's possible to flash using the internal sd card but I'm not sure. Once you flash that, you should flash the gapps file using 'install zip from sd card' using clockworkmod. Both of these flashing methods using CWM. I didn't use ROM manager, I just booted into CWM recovery and then flashed it. ALWAYS make a full rom backup before flashing and you should be safe and yes it's very safe.
Nv-flash is only needed when you have to restore your phone from some thing close to a absolute brick (when you have flashed some thing wrong or done some thing really bad, and it don't start by any means). That's when nv-flash is used to restore it as an last option. When nothing else works then you use it.
The metod described in the update guide is more advanced and yea its a bit of pain. But at the same time you do gain some practice on things that might be needed to do later in case you have problem with your phones. Things that people here on this forum almost assume that you know how to do. Also it works on all current known firmware for LGO2X. At least follow the steps until you have the adb set up. It might save you the frustration when you sit there and have problem with the phone.
Flashing is easier and faster with the rom manager app. Just remember to move your backups from titanium to the external sd as well. You don't want to lose those backups, right?
Last but not least.
Welcome to the living hell of always flashing the latest firmwares =D
And constant hunt for the highest ver numbers!
PS: Its safe as long as you remember "BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP"
Thanks for the replies
I have now successfully flashed the latest CM nightly build !!! And it rocks !!! I can't believe how sluggish my phone was with the official firmware... It is just crazy...
I had a few issues though:
- When I flashed CM (after data/cache wipe / factory reset), I couldn't find anything on my external SD card... To access the CM zip, I had to navigate to the internal SD card, and there I had a "_ExternalSD" folder... a bit weird...
- I exported all my contacts' numbers on the SIM card before flashing, but CM did not find anything... Hopefully I had a backup on my desktop, and had to manually re create all contacts (good thing I don't have too many...)
- I flashed the latest google App from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#Google_Apps but the Market is the old version (2.x)
Other than that, I am now a happy CM user... No way I go back to official LG bloatwares!!!

You can flash (with CWM recovery same procedure that you used to flash CM7) latest Market from here:http://www.mediafire.com/temasek (Go to Misc Folder)

Thanks a lot for the tip
Should I uninstall (somehow) my previous Google apps, or can I just flash the new version on top of the old?
I just saw that a new CyanogenMod nightly build has been released (#146) and I'm eager to update (from #127).
But I am wondering if I need to go through the whole process again (Nandroid backup, clear data/cache, wipe, flash CM, flash google apps)...
Or can I just go to recovery mode (from Rom manager) and flash the latest CM build??
Thanks in advance for your answer!!
NVFlash is used kinda like fastboot for our device (Cyanogen said so in the RC1 forum), a just in case scenario. As if in rom manager gives you an endless bootloop and you can't boot into recovery mode. You can use the NVFlash CWM or rom manager, I actually never use rom manager; I just uninstall it.
As far as the CM Wiki goes, I'm trying to change it to include NVFlash but the wiki people are a bit strict on what gets linked to what...

Yep, that's all you need to do.
trying to make sure i follow the instructions exactly to make sure my install is perfect.
So far I:
-used odin one click to go back to stock jf6. (i didnt have to disable voodoo right? i think using odin one click completely wipes it, so no reason to disable lagfix)
-rooted the phone
-installed rom manager, then when i get to this part it doesnt make sense
"Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 2.x).
Make sure you can reboot into ClockworkMod recovery from ROMManager. Reboot and get back into ROMManager Premium."
I choose captivate mtd and it gives me this message
"Samsung captivate (MTD) does not have an officially supported clockworkmod recovery yet. Have you installed a clockworkmod based recovery manually?"
-If i say no - it says until cwm is available rom manager will not work with captivate mtd
-if i say yes it says rom manager has been set up to use your existing recovery installation.
The problem is... I DONT HAVE A RECOVERY INSTALLATION YET!!!! I thought thats the whole reason im using rom manager. to install cwm....
I think last time to get it to work i chose something else, just to get cwm to work, and it did install, but i ended up having many bugs, and i was thinking that may have been why.
So please.... someone... tell me how im wrong in following these directions. Trying to install before i go to bed tonight.

I just flashed one of the stock one click gingerbread packages, It included boogs kernel with cwm, and flashed cm7 from there, let it boot, rebooted to recovery, installed gapps and let it boot up again.
Worked fine.
I'm not sure if there's a new one click, but it wont install unless you have voodoo lagfix disabled.

ridiculous. not that it worked, but that the instructions are so terrible.
Start with a rooted Eclair/Froyo running Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders (do not ask us how to do this).
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 2.x).
Make sure you can reboot into ClockworkMod recovery from ROMManager. Reboot and get back into ROMManager Premium.
Choose download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe data, cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
So not only is the part that im stuck on wrong, but you dont even need to be on froyo or eclair. great. thanks.

what wont install? I was previously on pinnacle, and to go back to stock, i just used the one click method. I thought this removes the lagfix? Am i right?

From memory they recommended froyo/eclair, but the gingerbread bootloaders work just fine.
You should be fine coming from pinnacle (I did), just make sure the voodoo lagfix is disabled first or the cm7 update zip won't install.
EDIT: I'll write you up a detailed step by step tutorial when I get home in about an hour.
You obviously have no clue what you're doing... ^ person above me... Installing an AOSP ROM, can be installed from any type of file system (even with lagfix) because it repartitions the whole phone... look through the Captivate General and Captivate Q&A, you will find your answers.
