Hey gang,
New to the Zune world and played through most of the features but maybe I missed this one. Wondering if there is a backup feature similiar to those people with their iPhones.
Is there a way to backup my entire phone to either restore it to another time? And similarly if I was to either replace my HD7 with another HD7 or say another WP7 device could I restore it without any issues?

There's no need to do this.
Just use your Live ID when you make an hard-reset or buy another HD7 for example, after connection to Zune you will get all things that you had before (programs, games, contacts)

Really?? Zune will remember all the games or apps I purchased or installed, photos, videos and music I synced?
If so that's amazing. Good to know in case I switch devices. But you should be able to manage this feature somehow incase you're someone that wants to start over from scratch.

Yes.
Try one thing, connect your phone to PC and when Zune opens go to the right top corner and enter Definitions/Account/Buying Story.
You will see all the programs and games that you installed until today.
The only thing "bad", I don't know how to eliminate it's that if you install a program and then uninstall it, he remains in this "memory"
did Zune remember all contacts informathion and pictures ??
i sync my contacts with live account
thanks
Zune actually is not too bad.
contact backup is ok.
but does anyone know about sms backup ?
i couldn't find any apps about backup sms on marketplace.

You should post a WTT/WTB notice in the Marketplace.

because it's a 'history' of your purchasing not current apps you have.
ye it's possible
It really begs an answer, "Why hasn't MS put out at least an answer as why, we cannot back up our phones and why we can't save our sms's? It really needs an answer... Even to this day, HTC still puts up on their website that you should seek an answer on Marketplace for a "3rd party application"...
Now that Mango is out, the 550 or whatever updates seem pretty useless and really unnoticeable in any kind of "wonderful update".. as been pushed for months.
An why no 3rd party app? I am really amazed why no one has come up with a solution.. a priceless product should have more abilities then sitting on someone's desk as a brick or paper weight that can little tiles...
Anybody in this great forum have an answer, after so long after the initial release of WP7?

Hi Pistol, basically Zune sucks like an electrolux!
If you use a windows live or hotmail account then your emails, contacts and calendars will sync back to your phone even after a full restore but that is where the good news ends.
If you have purchased an app you can download it again as many times as you want but your data or game saves for that app will be lost every time you reset or install a new ROM.
The only time Zune backs up your phone is before it installs a new update and your backup is fixed at that point in time. So lets say if in a months time you break your handset and get a replacement you should be able to restore the backup but all game saves etc will be from the month old backup and any progress made in between will be lost!
The real problem is if you decide to upgrade your HD7 to say a Titan, your backup is useless and yes you can re sync your hotmail stuff and download your apps again but you have to start from the beginning as far as saves go!
Microsoft really need to sort Zune out because it lets the whole WP7 platform down. People will argue that because WP7 devices come from multiple manufacturers with bespoke apps then backups between handsets cannot happen. Personally I think that as an operating system WP7 is brilliant but the lack of regular user data backup makes it so frustrating!
My girlfriend had an iPhone 4 which she sold about 3 months ago and for a while used an HTC Desire which she did not like at all, so when the 4S was released she upgraded and when she synced it with her iTunes magically all her previous data, game saves, apps etc were on her new 4S!
If WP7 is built with Xbox live in mind why can't I retrieve my game saves, I can do it on my PC and I can do it on my Xbox? If Apple can do it then so can Microsoft.
End of rant!
Hello XDA'rs,
I work for the developer Loud Crow Interactive Inc. and we build book apps for kids.
We've recently launched into the Android Market and are having trouble with our app being installed on rooted nook colors. The issues appear to be on the licensing side.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Also, what does a rooted nook register as (device) on the Android Market place,
Thanks in advance,
Tom
What's the error, logcat ?, what's the app?
dude u gotta give some info if need a solution.
There could be a million things that could cause problems like that.

We are all waiting for an answer. I have an outstanding request in with Google that I have had to update several times as they seem to be dancing around the question. When and if I hear I will post a response.
The App is "The Going to Bed Book" or "PopOut! The Tale of Peter Rabbit" - Our users are getting a "Invalid License" error. We're going to root one of our nooks soon to do some testing, but until then we were thinking we might be able to get something from the forums. Both users who reported the issue were running CM7, which I also run on my HTC IS, and runs our apps fine. Thus we're thinking it could have something to do with the device ID running against the licenses?
As we set up restrictions by device, We were curious what a rooted NC running CM7 would show as in terms of a device on the Android Market place?
Thanks for the help guys, and thanks for the patience. I'm not the actual Android developer on the team. He's out of the office for the week,
Cheers,
Tom
I think he means he is having trouble getting the application to install from the market in general. I looked up the applications and the NC was not a supported device.
I don't want to pay the money to download it to my phone and sideload it (I'm at work anyways). I don't know much about applications and how devices are determined to be compatible other than maybe their permissions. However, these applications (there are two on the market), don't require anything other than SD access.
As we set up restrictions by device....

That might be part of some of this. I was not aware developers were setting restrictions by device. Is this new?
model name -NookColor
product name -encore
And there is really no way to find out the problem, without looking at the logcat.

No, this feature is available to every developer since a long time. but there are 600 or so devices so not a lot of people bother with it.

Actually, questions to the market run against your account and the email info and log the following device details:
> IIILanguage: en
> IssueType: market_website
> Language: en
> android_app_name: Facebook
> android_os: gingerbread
> android_os_other:
> device_manufacturer: other
> device_manufacturer_other: Barnes & Noble
> hidden_country: US
> website_issue_select: grayed_device
device_manufacturer= bn
If u want to know more take a look at build.prop, people have uploaded it in netflix thread, which reminds me that a lot of users usually change their device and fake it to run different apps.

Those were direct quotes from what Google's filters picked up when I sent an email while logged in to the market.
Thanks guys, this will be a good start. If and when we resolve the issue I'll be sure to post an update with the details. I really wish Android Market supported promo codes; we'd love to be able to throw out some free copies for you guys to have a look at and test for these one off issues.
Thanks Again!
I assume if you sideload the .apk it will install fine?
Just want to contribute that I have the Going to Bed Book installed and running fine on my Nook. I am still running CM7 7.1RC, and have my build.prop spoofed for Netflix (no longer required, but I never changed it back and haven't flashed a new CM7 in a while). The only change I made in build.prop was setting the manufacturer to HTC.
The book runs great and is my son's new favorite app.
You may have an issue using get.DeviceID()... have one of your users use my IMEI generator and see if it fixes their problem. They can also spoof Manufacture, Device and Model with the newest version.
IMEI Generator Thread.
I have it on my CM7 (7.0.3 to lazy to update, running off sd no changes to build.prop) Nook and it works fine. My daughter loves it.
Some of the pages are kind of hard to register a turn, and it always starts upsidedown then flips itself over. But both of those things are the same on my incredible 2 as well.

Hi guys..
i live in india....i would like to buy Htc HD7....i have few doubts...can someone clarify(those who uses hd7 in india)..i am switching from Android to WP7
1. Tell me about Zune... how well it works in india....asking about updates and syc with vids and songs..also about air syc....also tell me about zune pass..(since we don't have any contract with network...how we can update the updates from MS)
2. i would like to know about xbox live...how well it works in india?
3. ms exchange syc...how well it works? i am frequent flyer so i need to syc frequently to update my office mails.
4. how about the market place....is it all the apps visible....since my android phone does not show everything...
5. how about the bing map...is it covered all the cities in india?
hope to see your answers...thanks in advance.
cheers
Surprised...no one is helping or answering .....or i don't know no one is using hd7 from india...
lets wait...
i have ordered HD7 through ebay...lets see.
cheers
I dunno If this helps
I recently got an HD7, my old HD2 (running android) broke so my carrier was willing to give me a brand new HD7 at a discounted rate.
1. Tell me about Zune... how well it works in india....asking about updates and syc with vids and songs..also about air syc....also tell me about zune pass..(since we don't have any contract with network...how we can update the updates from MS)
The zune software is just a means to sync your music, videos and podcasts between your device and the computer. It's not carrier specific so it doesn't matter what type of plan you have, you should be able to update the software on your phone. I think zune pass and air sync are not carrier specific aswell
2. i would like to know about xbox live...how well it works in india?
Again, it's not carrier specific, so there shouldn't be any problems
3. ms exchange syc...how well it works? i am frequent flyer so i need to syc frequently to update my office mails.
It works well, but I don't think it's "push" based, like android's gmail app, so you'll have somewhat of a delay from when the email reaches your account and when it actually gets synced to your phone
4. how about the market place....is it all the apps visible....since my android phone does not show everything...
I'll be in mangalore in a few days, I'll get more info about that for you... If you had a rooted android phone you should've have been privy to all the apps in the android marketplace
5. how about the bing map...is it covered all the cities in india?
Not sure, I'll get back to you on that
Sadly, I'm not a fan of this Windows OS, it may be a touch smoother than the Android OS, but it just doesn't seem powerful enough.
hey thanks xxvtcxx ....it was great help....i understood after reading your description....thanks for spending time for me...
Actually almost a year i was using android phone.....few things i felt very sad...
1. not able to udate the latest version like other phones...i could manage to update unofficial versions...but didn't work as official version.
2. its very slow...more than 2 year i was using iphone..it was better in speed....but speed of the android hurts more.
3. its not stable...some days it works fine some days not......slow hangs in between and restarts automatically...
4. i have rooted my phone but i am not able to see or add the black market applications...
after seeing some of the review of hd7.... i was impressed....so i though i can try...
once again i would like to say my thanks...also i would like to know which network provider gave you hd7?
cheers
From an HD7 user
Hi,
I live in Nagpur, India and use an HD7.
So some updates:
1. Zune works perfectly fine.
You can see the apps on the marketplace only if you have the latest version i.e. Mango, but it is available only to developers currently, but there is a hack for Zune on desktop through which you can install apps, its no biggie.
XBOX live works perfectly fine.
BING maps are pretty good, very detailed, even for Nagpur. But the local businesses are not mapped out, you can download a Google maps app and work with them though.
MS Exchange will work fine for your scenario.
Let me know if you have more specific questions.
Great help manishkungwani....i am now very clear about xbox , zune and market...thanks for your detailed descriptions....your help much much appreciated.
Cheers
since monday i've been having a new nokia lumia 920.
everything's fine, but the only one concern: i'm trying to install the applications, that i was using with my wp7 (htc hd7) phone. for example, "need for speed undercover" and "fb2 reader". i've bought them, when i was with wp7, and now they are paid again!
is this correct? or i missed something?
btw, i got a ms surface, and some games, i was playing on wp7, are in my surface's xbox hub. i can't play them on widows rt, obviously, but i can see some statistics about them: my points, open maps, etc. so i've supposed, that those games are just linked to my windows id (microsoft account), but it does not look like that?
If you touch "Buy" the store will say that you've already paid for the item and ask if you want to download again.

nope. i've tried to install fb2 reader. tapped "buy", i was asked to go in my wallet, then to tap "buy" again. i've tapped.. and bought it.
Are you using the same Microsoft ID on the Lumia that you used on the HD7? I'm in the exact situation, went from HD7 to 920 and I have no problems getting my paid applications back.
lol. i've just got a purchase confirmation from ms!
as long as you are using the same microsoft ID, it should pick up that you've paid for the apps already. i've downloaded all my purchased apps from my wp7.5 device to my 920 and haven't had to pay for anything again.
i wish it would show "install" instead of "buy" on the first page, but after you click "buy" it should (after entering your wallet pin if you have that enabled) tell you that you've already purchased the app.

yes, i'm surely using the same microsoft id on my nokia 920 and ms surface. also i'm using it from desktops and laptops to get access to my hotmail account, skydrive, etc. and i was using it on my htc hd7.
i don't know who to ask - microsoft support?

i was wrong! the reason was - i was confuse a little bit.
since i've bought "fb2 reader", it changed its author - evern worse, it was cloned. the current version has been moved to another authorship, and the original version (with the same author) was renamed to "fb2 reader classic". i was confused - which version is mine? i've selected "fb2 reader classic", because i knew its author. and i was wrong - it was a separate product. now i've tried to buy "fb2 reader" (by another author, but without the word "classic"), and it says, that, yes, i've already bought this application and may just download it. the same story about "need for speed uncovered".
thank you guys a lot for your help!
ps. i would recommend ms to indicate "already bought" products in the store somehow else, and to give a chance to download them without the wallet involved. it confuses a lot.

I also read on WPCentral that there is an intermittent bug at the moment, that is forcing people to re-purchase already bought items. That might be the issue here - best bet is to wait it out until the bug is fixed!
