Guess I've been spoilied... - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

I love my 8.9 way better than the Acer Iconia A500 that I came from, and I totally love it way more that my brothers iPad2. What I do worry about for Android in the tablet space is Windows 8 on tablets, especailly if they make some with intel chips.
If made with intel chips I might have the option to play my favorite old school rpgs which Android and Apple both do not have. Granted I'm only coming at this from one perspective, but others might be thinking the samething for another reason.
I don't think that I would ever buy a Windows or iOS phone though.

I only worry about battery life with those Intel chips to be honest. I will keep Android and might get a Windows 8 tablet faaaar into the future, only if it really convices me in all fronts (battery life included).

I recognize that face from the A500 forums. This tab is sweet

I just sold my laptop last month for a great price and now I'm playing the waiting game until I can get my HP Touchsmart TM2 convertible tablet. I'm dying for an update on a release date, but I'm getting nothing. There is one out already, but it's got the old dual-core. I'm waiting for this baby...
http://www.amazon.com/TouchSmart-tm2-2050us-12-1-Inch-Riptide-Argento/dp/B003KN3IZI
The Fujitsu and Toshiba models seem to be a bit too expensive. Anyone else have any recommendations? I need a real keyboard.
Otherwise, discuss tablet PCs!
I'm completely confizzled.... is this to talk about your dilemma or tablet PC's?
tablet PCs
I just started the conversation with my waiting dilemma
I like the Asus Eee touch pad (4thQ), EP121 is the 12" model & think tehy will have a 10" as well.

I saw a video of the performance and it was a little buggy. Hopefully they will fix that before release...
Taking a look at the specs, they are a bit meh here. I won't lie
I have a dell xt2 and I am itching to find something better for tablet pc options especially because I travel in and out of LA and Chicago in summer and winter (so the sun is a big issue)
I complain and moan and groan about the dell xt2 for a variety of reasons; mostly its dell using old parts (core 2 dual processor and a 5400 rpm hd where the previous model had a 7200 rpm). Dell ram is an arm and a leg, and SSD is so ridiculously priced its not even funny. Dell tech support is full of morons with their head caught so far up their proverbial anus they assume issues are normal.
And despite all of the problems I have with the dell xt2, I think about the tablet pcs now and I realize this is the best I can get for the type of person I am. I'm a clinical psychology student, so a capacitive touch screen is very important. Pressure sensitivity would help in adobe like programs, but it is not necessary. I like having the ability to use my finger to size and resize because I read my ebooks. I can run mac osx, windows, and ubuntu, and I look for further customization granted and nothing can be found. But I realize for now this is the best tablet for me.
I don't need a tablet that can pop off at the top separating keyboard from screen, I need a higher gpu processor so I can render things a bit faster granted. All in all the tablet pc market is a waiting game. The i7 by lenovo is a joke (which is shocking). Maybe hp would be better with a capacitive touch screen and built with thin and portability in mind
edit
I just saw the hp elitebook 2740p
and I am impressed a bit
i7 2.6 ghz
8 gig ram
250 gig hd
2 mp webcam
lightweight like the dell xt
multitouch
However, the bad part is the pricetag is almost 3000 dollars psh no way I'm doing that mess - at least not until I get some cash and sell my dell xt2
Perhaps the only issue I easily see with the tablet is that where is the hp custom suite??? its like nonexistent which is a huge negative especially if its marketed as both a consumer and business tablet. I mean the hp touchsmart theme can be installed but that's not the point. Que sera sera
Well, the HP Touchsmart is supposed to be coming out with an i5. Given that it will be the same form factor for the most part, you can max at 8GB of RAM on 64-bit and 500+GB HD. That should only be $1200-$1350.

wayyyyy too expensive for the features...that's double the price of what HP is expected to have ready in less than 30 days
If it is soley about price Thinkpads are not usualy the way to go, but IMO they are worth every penny. With it you get the best keyboard, the best pointing device (trackpoint/nipple > mouse > touchpad), the best build quality, and with X200 T, the best tablet computer.
If you already have a laptop and are just looking for an auxillory tablet, then something else is in order. But if you want a laptop and a tablet, or just something with the convience of a tablet that still has the full power and utility of a laptop, the X200 T is hard to beat. It is the only tablet which I would consider a "laptop replacement" (it's a laptop in disguise); to me the higher price and extra 1.5 pounds are made up for by this fact.
I do wish Lenovo would shove more powerful hardware into their machines, especily on the GPU side. And honestly one of the biggest draws for me and many other Thinkpad fans is the trackpoint/nipple. Once you get used to it, you can never go back to using a touchpad, and at times it is even difficult to use a regular mouse. I know Dell puts something similar on their business laptops but it is a far ineferior implamentation to the Thinkpads'.
HP Slate looks alright
and it's the normal smartphone price about £350.00 and has a 1.3 Ghz processor!
not to big as well because that was one of apples failure along with the oth half a million because if you want to type with both hand you have to put the flippn' thing down.
wanna get my self a slate
Thanks

I agree with you on the build quality. From what I have seen, Lenovo seems to dominate that market, but I just cannot agree with you with the trackport/nipple. I've logged quite a bit of time with Lenovos and IBMs and I just don't get why they still make that thing. I upgrade my mouse every year and I just can't have anything else. Well, maybe a stylus!
But what I was really looking for is a netbook with touch capabilities that can convert into a slate. I want a real keyboard and I want specs that beat the XPS M140 (Intel M 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HD) and I want to be ready for touch software coming out later this year. I didn't want to spend more than $1000 either. It seems that the HP Touchsmart is the best (and only) one so far.
IdeaPad S10-3t is garbage. EeePC T101mt is garbage. the S10 blade gets expensive when you want to upgrade to something decent. And the HP Touchsmart Tm2 seems to be perfect, just needs an optical drive.
I have got an hp pavillion tx2650eg which is very fine with its touchscreen. The touch input isn't that good, but the input with the inductive pen is wonderful

I mean touchsmart is okay...but I don't need a big old desktop I want a tablet that'll last 2 years and the size of the hd is okay I mean I can change that. Or even get like 4 gb of ram and update the ram myself and keep the i7 processor. I'll save up for it or look for it on craigslist like my first dell xt =) and my dell xt2
I mean dell pricing is crap. I want my i7 8gb of sexy damnit!

I read a while back that Dell was investing in convertible tablets, but I haven't seen anything yet. I'd trust purchasing Dell, but they just don't have anything cost-worthy.
Also, it's always good getting jobs early in the degree process and then working your way up. I apparently make more now in my bachelor's position than others trying to get jobs with their master's degree. If only that degree would finally come in the mail.

Anyone else thinking about a tablet?

Apple unfortunately has made tablets seem necessary, when they truly aren't. But as a techie, I feel I should probably get one.
I don't want an iPad or anything to do with Apple. And I'd love to wait until a hybrid model (docking tablet that turns from a mobile OS into a full OS when docked), because they are going to the be the future (quote me).
Should I wait around for the Acer Android 3.0 tablet? Should I wait for a Galaxy Tab price drop? Should I wait for a Windows 8 tablet?
Thoughts?

Hmm..well,go on for the Gal tab...You may consider waiting for the other two you mentioned, but considering the high price that they'd be launched,i would prefer a Gal Tab...Apple Sucks...
I hate to say it but if you want a tablet today then you should go with an iPad. It has the platform and the apps plus it'll retain it's resale value once dual-core tablets start hitting the market early next year. I know everyone is complaining that there is no flash on the iPad but the reality is that flash is not viable right now, not for Apple OS and not for Android 2.2.
I've had a chance to play with a Galaxy tab and I fell in love with it but at $600 off contract and $400 with a 2 year contract it doesn't make sense to purchase one. Dual-core tablets will be out early next year that will have Android 3.0 and enough power to run circles around flash. Why would I want to be locked into a 2 year contract or pay $600 for a tablet that will lose a lot of it's resale value in 3 months.
If you have money to burn then get a galaxy tab, if you want to get the most out of your tablet when you decide to resell in a few months then get an iPad, or just wait it out cuz the next generation of tablets are going to see a huge increase in performace and battery life.

yes... That's the spirit.. I too would prefer plunking my money down on galaxy tab if i had the itch to purchase something right now... The ipad is way too polished, elitist and weirdish.... In my opinion..
Apple products need itunes on pc... And itunes on my pc is the biggest bloatware for me
no doubt it has bigger screen but let us wait and see what do the 2nd gen tabs have to offer.. Maybe the whole ipad phenomenon might get washed out by 2nd gen samsung or dell tablets..
I'm getting a blackpad (officially named Playbook but I like Blackpad better=P). 1Ghz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, Adobe Flash (Never coming to an Apple product), HDMI output at 1080p, plus HD recording and much more. I'm gooood.
I want one. But I want one with a proper OS, not a mobile OS.

I originally wanted the Dell Duo before it was even announced. I was looking for a "netverible" and ended up buying an HP Touchsmart TM2 instead. But now that it's out and the battery life is quoted at ~4 hours, I'd rather wait for next year's processors. Definitely like the hard keyboard. Virtual ones suck and I hate that nobody is willing to admit that.

DELL STREAK 7 tegra 2 core processor

DELL launched a new 7" tablet with Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. But no honeycomb system installed. Hmm, a lil bit confusing, the new Android (Honeycomb) is coming out soon and why stick to Froyo? Or maybe could be possible way to update to new operating system?. If that so, I therefore conclude that our Gtab is capable of new system with respect to specs. Wud ya tink?
Long live Gtab lovers!...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/dell-streak-7-official-on-t-mobiles-4g-network-bringing-dual-c/
What is disappointing is that Dell Streak 7 has the screen resolution of 800x480 which is the same as that of Dell Streak 5. So it's not actually comparable to Samsung Galaxy Tab which has 1024x600. At least for me I don't want to upgrade to a larger device with the same screen resolution because you can't view more without scrolling.
Thats probably so they cost keep the cost down.
My guess is 350.00 out the door.
I personally found it very difficult to read webpages on my Galaxy Tab @ 1024x600 unless I zoomed in which I thought made the higher resolution rather pointless for me.

Yeah but what you're got to ask yourselves is: will samsung ever offer an update for the gtab?
samsung have the worst reputation in the industry for lying to their customers in respect of 'imminent' updates that never happen, (take the galaxy s as an one example) even when honeycombe becomes available samsung will claim ignorance.
I think samsung charge carriers for what they consider to be a 'non essential' update, where as Dell would not.
Heads up their own ass...
I agree with you... Samsung can't seem to figure it out. It's not just their cell phones, either. Check out updates for their TV's and DVD players, too.

I love the effect that google has created with the N7

Google...basically gently rose up from the Shadows. Flexed it's muscles. And instantly KO'd every company making ****ty small tablets.
In one move. One fell swoop.
Speak softly and carrying a big stick. Well Played Google.
While I know we are a bit upset over the sd slot, and hdmi. You've got to admit, this makes pretty much any other 200 tablet a piece of garbage now.
Thoughts?
Lawyers everywhere are celebrating the arrival of the Nexus 7.
Google represents deep pockets, and every two-bit company with ripped-off patents will be looking to cash in.
Nah, they just like to set the price and standards on each subsequent generation of android devices. Asus was going to release it regardless, Google just changed the standard of such devices taking out what we would call standard features that most people won't need and lowing the price on said standard while keeping the same performance.
gotta give google some credit... they have the technology and know how to use it
While I was hoping it would have the original features of the memo pad as revealed as ces I'm thrilled by this tablet. I think having its software come directly from Google and carrying the nexus moniker more than makes up for the hardware changes.
This tablet was an excellent move by Google because not only is it great hardware wise, but the 7 inch market is where they can build a foothold on the tablet market.
I'm happy it is priced so competitively but to scoff at other companies giving less for more money bothers me. Google isn't making profit off this tablet. They hope to raise revenue from play store purchases, etc, but other companies that produce these need to make money off what they build. I don't begrudge them for that. In the end it would be nice for other stockish android tablet makers to either commit to keeping devices on the latest OS, or release source for drivers, etc when they discontinue support for them so that unofficial builds could continue.

no way at the rumored $300 price point. plus infinity is already released. no way you will get true HD 1080P nexus tablet with most powerful tegra3 variant(highest clocked, higher voltage, higher clocked gpu, bandwidth on controller increased) for that cheap. we can dream though..lol.
I see a nexus 10 model being closer to transformer 300 minus some features to lower price point. nexus 7 already uses exact same tegra3 chipset as in transformer 300, which is the T30L variant. So Asus/Google could build a Nexus based on that design. minus some features. corners have to be cut to make the cheaper price point.

Yeah, google's only real contribution here was the hype (not insignifigant). And it's price for meddling was removal of features (like sd card) Asus was probably willing to include.
To be honest, I'm not sure it was worth it. And we can never really know, short of travelling to that alternate reality where Asus did release that $250 memo.

More realistic for it to have been $350 and have ICS instead of Jelly Bean.

I'm pretty sure his 250 quote came directly from Asus back when they announced they where releasing it.
I think N7 is the best move that Google could make with Android tablets. With N7, Google can
1. increase the market share, which is lagging iPad.
2. preempt the 7" iPad mini
3. kill cheap android tablets
4. set a standard to avoid fragmentation
5. diminish perception of android tablet = kindle fire
6. stepping stone for play store's long term success
anything I missed?
It might also bring down the price of some of the higher end tablets (are people really willing to pay an extra $xxx just to get feature xxx?)
Please don't think I'm defending lower hardware specs, but the truth is that Nexus devices are great for their SOFTWARE. Other than the Nexus One, these devices have been great, with good hardware but typically not bleeding edge. They contain enough to do what Google sets out to do. I used to be mad about this but now I'm quite happy. There's more to having a great device than the absolute edge of technology. When I got the Nexus S it was the best Gingerbread phone until Google release the next phone... the Galaxy Nexus. I have the GSM Galaxy Nexus now (ordered int'l in Jan) and though it wasn't the end all of hardware when it came out on paper... it is STILL the best ICS device as well. Now on JB, it simply flies. Why is this?
Simply, the way software and hardware are integrated, it's at Apple levels, dare I say. If you look at superior hardware phones like the One X and SGS III, there are hiccups and hangups or other things created by their custom UI's, etc. Plus, the software is written by Google for the Nexus devices to run well.
I'm not saying the galaxy nexus or other nexus device will have the highest benchmarks or play Temple Run the best, but they tend to function as a whole better than their brethren.
The Nexus 7 seems to be the same way. Jellybean is amazing. As Morfic stated, it makes ICS seem like Vista to Jellybean's Windows 7. It may be basically the same kernel, but it does everything it's predecessor does, better and more. Since they hired Mathias Duarte, I believe Android has not just the most functional OS of mobiles, but also the most cohesive and sharpest looking. All of this is my opinion of course, but I remember when GB came out and compared my Nexus S to the iPhone 4 and thought it still LOOKED a little rough. Now, in addition to it doing more, it looks and feels better as well.
My hope is that the Nexus 7 and Google's focus on this device will bring better Tablet UI apps and allows them to take market share from Apple the way they have done the past few years with their phones.
I think they killed all competition in the 7" Android market entirely I'm guessing, and maybe will do the same to the bigger Android tablets if the rumored 10" is released.
Unfortunately, I think this will cause other companies to not build 7" tablets with better specs since most people aren't going to pay much more to have them.. (Like video out, micro sd, haptic feedback, etc.)
The Toshiba Excite 7.7 16gb @ $500? Dead, dead, dead. Only big difference is microsd and AMOLED. And timely updates from Toshiba? Not likely.
Galaxy Tab 7.7? Hard to say. Only the Verizon model is available directly in the US, so maybe it will hang on since it has cell radio, MHL, haptic feedback, microsd, AMOLED, etc. But then again it's over DOUBLE the price. (Disclaimer: I love mine. Verizon, where is my ICS update????)
There are 10" tablets out there for about the same price as the N7, running ICS, with SD cards etc. And they'll sell about 3 of them - because 'joe public' doesn't buy noname chinese hardware that's (in their mind) 'too cheap'.
A google tablet, on the store shelves next to everything else, with google's name on it - they'll buy that. Then you start to shift a few. Then other manufacturers can start to shift a few, too, because suddenly people have friends with an android tablet and they want one too. 'Not an ipad' ceases to be the death blow that it is currently.

I think N7 is the best move that Google could make with Android tablets. With N7, Google can
1. increase the market share, which is lagging iPad.
2. preempt the 7" iPad mini
3. kill cheap android tablets
4. set a standard to avoid fragmentation
5. diminish perception of android tablet = kindle fire
6. stepping stone for play store's long term success
anything I missed?

But these cheap tablets... The usually have no support, and no software updates, etc. That's also a huge reason ppl don't go buy them.

I agree with you on some of the points but One x and SGSIII are not hick ups. One x might had some problems earlier but SGSIII never had any problem and it is the best ICS phone not Galaxy Nexus. I sold my Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks back and this was the first phone which does not make me feel wow about anything at all. It was doing everything at acceptable level but best at nothing. I agree that at $350 price tag it is a nice phone but I bought this phone only because I was short of money. Google did well with Nexus one, Nexus S and they were indeed best phones but Galaxy Nexus was just okay sort of phone even when it was released last year. I think the new Nexus would be much better which hopefully would be released later this year.
On the other hand what you have said about Nexus 7 on the other hand is true. Even though I have iPad 3 64GB with 4G but I understand what google is trying to do with Nexus 7 and I love what they did. I was looking for a good 7 inch tablet and there was nothing good in the market in 7 inch beside toshiba 7.7 but it was too pricey. Who is going to pay more than 500 for a 7.7 inch android tablet? Google on the other hand done very well by introducing Nexus 7 only for 200 and nothing can beat it at this price point or even nothing with 300 more price tag can beat it. It is even better than Asus Pad TF300 which cost way more than Nexus 7. The 7 inch form factor is also great and google made a very good choice.

Are you upgrading to the NEXUS 8 ?

Its looks like there will be A nexus 8/9
So how many of us are going to upgrade?
I know I will
it may have:
64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1
5GB/2GB of RAM
5MP/8MP rear-facing camera
8.9-in 2,560x1,600 display
If it's less than $300, I will.

I did forget to put maybe
I marked this a no.
I probably will not go the Nexus route again for a next tablet.
I'm thinking the new generation Atom chips are alright and I might get the Dell Venue 8 Pro or its successor. Might as well have the full Windows 8.1 capability on a tablet... And that Active Stylus intrigues me.

Thats why i want the nexus 8/9
it will be 64bit Tegra K1
i voted no. i dont see myself buying a new mini tablet for a while. the nexus 7 does everything i need well,i just need to read PDFs and watch a few movies while reclined.i think it should last me at least 2 more years if i dont break it (ive got a case).
if i do get another tablet,it will probably be a windows tab with a bigger screen to replace my netbook which is from 2011 and seems to be dying out even tho ive replaced the HD,my guess is it's a motherboard issue/overheating.
I use my tablet for streaming. Nothing more. So I'll stick with my N7 til its dead. ?
I'm hoping the 5gs of RAM rumors are true
But you know a tablet having more RAM then most laptops
Brings doubts

And still; Android's ever running App-ness will gunk up the RAM. I think the jolly green robot is starting to spin out of control.

Today's computer woot is a kick butt Dell tablet. Very tempting. 256 SSD, i5, IPS 1920x1080, 36000(!) mAh battery. Keyboard that adds battery available, desktop dock available, Windows 8.1 Pro, etc. etc. Fro $549. I would absolutely get this over any 10" android tablet. Its basically an ultrabook without a keyboard. I have an extra Office 2010 license from a 3 pack i bought a few years ago, too. Wife would strangle me, though, lol.
Maybe?
Picked up the nvidia Shield tablet yesterday. I got sick of the lock ups and lag on my nexus 7, and jumped on the opportunity. This thing is nice, no lag, bigger screen but close to the same size, front facing speakers. It's basically like the "leaked" nexus 8 but available now for $300. Personally I think the leak was BS, and while the nexus might be great I got sick of waiting.
