Apple unfortunately has made tablets seem necessary, when they truly aren't. But as a techie, I feel I should probably get one.
I don't want an iPad or anything to do with Apple. And I'd love to wait until a hybrid model (docking tablet that turns from a mobile OS into a full OS when docked), because they are going to the be the future (quote me).
Should I wait around for the Acer Android 3.0 tablet? Should I wait for a Galaxy Tab price drop? Should I wait for a Windows 8 tablet?
Thoughts?

Hmm..well,go on for the Gal tab...You may consider waiting for the other two you mentioned, but considering the high price that they'd be launched,i would prefer a Gal Tab...Apple Sucks...
I hate to say it but if you want a tablet today then you should go with an iPad. It has the platform and the apps plus it'll retain it's resale value once dual-core tablets start hitting the market early next year. I know everyone is complaining that there is no flash on the iPad but the reality is that flash is not viable right now, not for Apple OS and not for Android 2.2.
I've had a chance to play with a Galaxy tab and I fell in love with it but at $600 off contract and $400 with a 2 year contract it doesn't make sense to purchase one. Dual-core tablets will be out early next year that will have Android 3.0 and enough power to run circles around flash. Why would I want to be locked into a 2 year contract or pay $600 for a tablet that will lose a lot of it's resale value in 3 months.
If you have money to burn then get a galaxy tab, if you want to get the most out of your tablet when you decide to resell in a few months then get an iPad, or just wait it out cuz the next generation of tablets are going to see a huge increase in performace and battery life.

yes... That's the spirit.. I too would prefer plunking my money down on galaxy tab if i had the itch to purchase something right now... The ipad is way too polished, elitist and weirdish.... In my opinion..
Apple products need itunes on pc... And itunes on my pc is the biggest bloatware for me
no doubt it has bigger screen but let us wait and see what do the 2nd gen tabs have to offer.. Maybe the whole ipad phenomenon might get washed out by 2nd gen samsung or dell tablets..
I'm getting a blackpad (officially named Playbook but I like Blackpad better=P). 1Ghz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, Adobe Flash (Never coming to an Apple product), HDMI output at 1080p, plus HD recording and much more. I'm gooood.
I want one. But I want one with a proper OS, not a mobile OS.

I originally wanted the Dell Duo before it was even announced. I was looking for a "netverible" and ended up buying an HP Touchsmart TM2 instead. But now that it's out and the battery life is quoted at ~4 hours, I'd rather wait for next year's processors. Definitely like the hard keyboard. Virtual ones suck and I hate that nobody is willing to admit that.

So iPad 2 is out MARCH 11 next week and has the same prices they are also just attacking Android for being copycats too
But there you have it
It also has the two cameras, 33% thinner (like a piece of paper), dual core, mirrored hdmi out, two colors (black and white), and a case that is more of a "cover". It looks like they are trying to copy android tablets...
You need an extra $39 cable to get hdmi out? That is soooo Apple!!

yepp i thought it was funny the app jab with the honeycomb logo compared to a device that has been out for a full year already, and then the jab on prices i thought was legit
whats it matter what its price or power?the cpu and gpu look great, but whats it matter?they will require backwards compatibility with the old ipad, and the ipad lacks a true os that a tablet for a power user needs
Sweet! The iOS looks the same! All those app icons. Intuitive!
Seems to me, aside from the thickness, Apple has copied most of the new Android Tablet features...dual core, hdmi, front facing camera...I'm sorry but copycat much?

Yeah I'm watching. I hope this is the last overly smug announcement for a tablet I have to watch. Here's to hoping this pushes Google and manufacturers a bit.
And yes, I know I don't have to watch. They're always fun to watch, the tone just gets me.

In relation to the Xoom, it is relevant. It's a good way to compare and contrast features. If you don't like it, don't reply or become involved. It's that simple. I'm not seeing anything that blows the Xoom away so far and I'm happy that I decided on the Xoom. Relax Bauxite.

But the device starts at $499. The Xoom is $799 as its only price point. I think its a joke too, but its still cheaper by an extreme amount lol.
This is really sad. At first we said that the Motorola Xoom has to be expensive because of the components. This is completely debunked by the fact that the iPad 2 just launched 1 week later with a dual-core processor, the same storage, 2 cameras, and crafted from aluminum, for $499.
Not to mention that there is no software R&D in Motorolas price, they didn't have to buy Honeycomb. Its just sad that motorola can only release for $799, even the announced wifi version is gonna be $599. How can you release with the same specs for $100+ more than the iPad version?
I'm by far NOT an Apple fanboy, but Motorola is gonna have to slash these prices or they're not going to sell 1million Xooms this year. We're gonna have to see the Xoom down to match or be under the iPad 2 prices or its GG Moto imho.

Yep, me too. I'm not going to buy an iPad, but its A LOT harder to buy the Xoom for $799 when I know they're just straight stealing from me for the price of the components. TBH this means that I'm re-thinking waiting on the Xoom literally because I know they must drop the price to get any real sales numbers. I guarantee their numbers were bad before, but they're gonna be even worse now.
Apple sure knows how to put on a show and get people excited, though! Thinner, lighter, same battery life, same price... same accessibility limitations but it is making people drool...

Right. I'm sure if there was a WiFi only, 16GB Xoom, we'd be looking at $499.99 too. The "equivalent" Xoom is 32GB, WiFi for $599.99. The iPad is cheaper because it has options, as far as hardware configuration goes.

This is probably all over the forums but I just saw this at hot-deals.org:
Thursday, March 24, 2011 last update: 4:26pm (EDT)
* Verizon Wireless - HOT! - iPad Generation 1 Wifi 16GB $299, 32GB $399 in-store
Available at Verizon Wireless stores nationwide today is the Apple iPad Generation 1 Wifi 16GB model for $299 (in-store only, not online, not by phone). Also the 32GB is available for $399, and the 64GB for $499. No limit. This is a clearance, since the new iPad 2 is available and sold in the same stores.
This was confirmed both in-person and by phone at in 3 US cities before this post. Store reps may hold one for you if you call in advance.
Update (4:15pm EDT, 1:15pm PDT): Apple just sent a memo to Verizon Wireless stores, asking them not to allow telephone holds on the product. Stores are now selling them on a first come, first serve basis. As you can expect, the 16GB versions are sold out at most stores or already spoken for to those who called and reserved one earlier. Most stores still have 32GB iPads for $399.
I don't get it. Why would anyone actually *want* an iPad?
I don't get it...why would you post about the iPad on a Nook forum?

Regardless, what one may feel about the ipad and iphone, both products have a large quantity of high quality apps.
i bought one to sell but now i might just keep it and sell the nookie. after doing some reading, it looks like the open source for honeycomb won't be coming for a very long time, if ever. by then, there will probably be a lot more cheap options much like the NC available, some already running honeycomb natively. the developers will move their interest towards those platforms and this subforum will be pretty dead. meanwhile, the ipad just works out of the box and is even better after jailbreaking. i hate apple but for 50 bucks more i think the ipad wins here
Posted because I've already seen multiple iPad related posts that were well-received here, because the Nook Color is constantly touted (by me as well) as the next best thing to an iPad currently available, and because this makes the iPad <b>extremely</b> price competitive with the Nook Color.
It changes the game, that's why!
Won't lie. I have an Ipod Touch and love it. But that's where I draw the line, I just don't like apple as a company. I don't like how their software is completely closed sourced so that it can have no competitors. I don't like that the Ipad 2 won't even touch the Xoom in hardware.
I won't be selling my Nook Color for an Ipad anytime soon, even if the Nook doesn't get HC. CM7 is working exceptionally well, and less of youtube, I really have no problems with it.
I will however be buying a G-tab or Xoom very soon... Can't wait for HDMI output!
wth ipad 2 destroys xoom in 3d performance.
ever scroll a website with a ipad, its so freakin smooth its ulmost unreal
Why is this thread in a Nook Color forum? Move it to some Apple Kool-Aid drinking forum. This is about us tinkering-types making the NC into something that we want. Nook vs iPad is completely irrelevant.
ryan you're just being silly. If there were decent and affordable Android tablets, neither one of us would be quite as keen on hacking a Nook Color. I don't own a single Apple product and probably never will. There's just no kool-aid involved.
If anything, refusing to consider a brand name on principle is the more fanatical practice. At least some of us are here because we want a tablet we can afford and control, not merely to hack for the sake of hacking. We can't control jailbroken iPads as well as we can control Android tablets -- 'cause Jobs is a smart and vile dictator -- but I think it's incredibly important to know what kind of competition the Nook Color has.
$299 with no contract is nice. $299 on two years... forget it..
"Contract" price? How could that be - it's WiFi only, isn't it?
They have the 32 GB model for $399.

For the record, there are no "contract price" iPads. Even the AT&T 3G are month-to-month, no-contract, turn on and off as needed (there's no such thing as a Verizon 3G iPad 1).
I agree, the nook is very cool, though love/hate the ipad has great apps, garageband, for xample, im a singer my cousin plays drums but we dont have guitarist or bassist, and neither of us really play actually we suck at guitar/bass,lol, but garageband(gb) allows power chord playing with smart guitar and bass, its not bad either. Also does drums n piano, i believe it mixes the tracks, upto 8 cuz its like an 8 track recorder, like a 4 track..
Dont get me wrong i like android and really really like webOS, but they both need to charge less for their tabs for the equivalent memory. Cuz mainstream consumers, ppl who dont really know like we all do, will pick ipad over xoom or touchpad most of the time, now xoom and touchpad will trump ipad when $$$ is involved. $499-16gb wifi,ipad2, htc flyer, hpalm touchpad all same price. Now if flyer n touchpad were $399 or $450 itd help, just until people spread the word, then charge equal$$ on touchpad2, etc....just my opinion idk

Google...basically gently rose up from the Shadows. Flexed it's muscles. And instantly KO'd every company making ****ty small tablets.
In one move. One fell swoop.

While I know we are a bit upset over the sd slot, and hdmi. You've got to admit, this makes pretty much any other 200 tablet a piece of garbage now.

Lawyers everywhere are celebrating the arrival of the Nexus 7.
Google represents deep pockets, and every two-bit company with ripped-off patents will be looking to cash in.
Nah, they just like to set the price and standards on each subsequent generation of android devices. Asus was going to release it regardless, Google just changed the standard of such devices taking out what we would call standard features that most people won't need and lowing the price on said standard while keeping the same performance.
gotta give google some credit... they have the technology and know how to use it
While I was hoping it would have the original features of the memo pad as revealed as ces I'm thrilled by this tablet. I think having its software come directly from Google and carrying the nexus moniker more than makes up for the hardware changes.
This tablet was an excellent move by Google because not only is it great hardware wise, but the 7 inch market is where they can build a foothold on the tablet market.
I'm happy it is priced so competitively but to scoff at other companies giving less for more money bothers me. Google isn't making profit off this tablet. They hope to raise revenue from play store purchases, etc, but other companies that produce these need to make money off what they build. I don't begrudge them for that. In the end it would be nice for other stockish android tablet makers to either commit to keeping devices on the latest OS, or release source for drivers, etc when they discontinue support for them so that unofficial builds could continue.

no way at the rumored $300 price point. plus infinity is already released. no way you will get true HD 1080P nexus tablet with most powerful tegra3 variant(highest clocked, higher voltage, higher clocked gpu, bandwidth on controller increased) for that cheap. we can dream though..lol.
I see a nexus 10 model being closer to transformer 300 minus some features to lower price point. nexus 7 already uses exact same tegra3 chipset as in transformer 300, which is the T30L variant. So Asus/Google could build a Nexus based on that design. minus some features. corners have to be cut to make the cheaper price point.

Yeah, google's only real contribution here was the hype (not insignifigant). And it's price for meddling was removal of features (like sd card) Asus was probably willing to include.
To be honest, I'm not sure it was worth it. And we can never really know, short of travelling to that alternate reality where Asus did release that $250 memo.

More realistic for it to have been $350 and have ICS instead of Jelly Bean.

I'm pretty sure his 250 quote came directly from Asus back when they announced they where releasing it.
I think N7 is the best move that Google could make with Android tablets. With N7, Google can
1. increase the market share, which is lagging iPad.
2. preempt the 7" iPad mini
3. kill cheap android tablets
4. set a standard to avoid fragmentation
5. diminish perception of android tablet = kindle fire
6. stepping stone for play store's long term success
anything I missed?
It might also bring down the price of some of the higher end tablets (are people really willing to pay an extra $xxx just to get feature xxx?)
Please don't think I'm defending lower hardware specs, but the truth is that Nexus devices are great for their SOFTWARE. Other than the Nexus One, these devices have been great, with good hardware but typically not bleeding edge. They contain enough to do what Google sets out to do. I used to be mad about this but now I'm quite happy. There's more to having a great device than the absolute edge of technology. When I got the Nexus S it was the best Gingerbread phone until Google release the next phone... the Galaxy Nexus. I have the GSM Galaxy Nexus now (ordered int'l in Jan) and though it wasn't the end all of hardware when it came out on paper... it is STILL the best ICS device as well. Now on JB, it simply flies. Why is this?
Simply, the way software and hardware are integrated, it's at Apple levels, dare I say. If you look at superior hardware phones like the One X and SGS III, there are hiccups and hangups or other things created by their custom UI's, etc. Plus, the software is written by Google for the Nexus devices to run well.
I'm not saying the galaxy nexus or other nexus device will have the highest benchmarks or play Temple Run the best, but they tend to function as a whole better than their brethren.
The Nexus 7 seems to be the same way. Jellybean is amazing. As Morfic stated, it makes ICS seem like Vista to Jellybean's Windows 7. It may be basically the same kernel, but it does everything it's predecessor does, better and more. Since they hired Mathias Duarte, I believe Android has not just the most functional OS of mobiles, but also the most cohesive and sharpest looking. All of this is my opinion of course, but I remember when GB came out and compared my Nexus S to the iPhone 4 and thought it still LOOKED a little rough. Now, in addition to it doing more, it looks and feels better as well.
My hope is that the Nexus 7 and Google's focus on this device will bring better Tablet UI apps and allows them to take market share from Apple the way they have done the past few years with their phones.
I think they killed all competition in the 7" Android market entirely I'm guessing, and maybe will do the same to the bigger Android tablets if the rumored 10" is released.
Unfortunately, I think this will cause other companies to not build 7" tablets with better specs since most people aren't going to pay much more to have them.. (Like video out, micro sd, haptic feedback, etc.)
The Toshiba Excite 7.7 16gb @ $500? Dead, dead, dead. Only big difference is microsd and AMOLED. And timely updates from Toshiba? Not likely.
Galaxy Tab 7.7? Hard to say. Only the Verizon model is available directly in the US, so maybe it will hang on since it has cell radio, MHL, haptic feedback, microsd, AMOLED, etc. But then again it's over DOUBLE the price. (Disclaimer: I love mine. Verizon, where is my ICS update????)
There are 10" tablets out there for about the same price as the N7, running ICS, with SD cards etc. And they'll sell about 3 of them - because 'joe public' doesn't buy noname chinese hardware that's (in their mind) 'too cheap'.
A google tablet, on the store shelves next to everything else, with google's name on it - they'll buy that. Then you start to shift a few. Then other manufacturers can start to shift a few, too, because suddenly people have friends with an android tablet and they want one too. 'Not an ipad' ceases to be the death blow that it is currently.

I think N7 is the best move that Google could make with Android tablets. With N7, Google can
1. increase the market share, which is lagging iPad.
2. preempt the 7" iPad mini
3. kill cheap android tablets
4. set a standard to avoid fragmentation
5. diminish perception of android tablet = kindle fire
6. stepping stone for play store's long term success
anything I missed?

But these cheap tablets... The usually have no support, and no software updates, etc. That's also a huge reason ppl don't go buy them.

I agree with you on some of the points but One x and SGSIII are not hick ups. One x might had some problems earlier but SGSIII never had any problem and it is the best ICS phone not Galaxy Nexus. I sold my Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks back and this was the first phone which does not make me feel wow about anything at all. It was doing everything at acceptable level but best at nothing. I agree that at $350 price tag it is a nice phone but I bought this phone only because I was short of money. Google did well with Nexus one, Nexus S and they were indeed best phones but Galaxy Nexus was just okay sort of phone even when it was released last year. I think the new Nexus would be much better which hopefully would be released later this year.
On the other hand what you have said about Nexus 7 on the other hand is true. Even though I have iPad 3 64GB with 4G but I understand what google is trying to do with Nexus 7 and I love what they did. I was looking for a good 7 inch tablet and there was nothing good in the market in 7 inch beside toshiba 7.7 but it was too pricey. Who is going to pay more than 500 for a 7.7 inch android tablet? Google on the other hand done very well by introducing Nexus 7 only for 200 and nothing can beat it at this price point or even nothing with 300 more price tag can beat it. It is even better than Asus Pad TF300 which cost way more than Nexus 7. The 7 inch form factor is also great and google made a very good choice.
So when The Kindle fire came out, there was press about the ipad mini... this was dispelled by jobs a month later.
Now with the Google Nexus 7, wow.. the press go's wild again with ipad mini stories!
This vaporware they say will be out in Nov... funny they write just before google and amazon launch 7" tabs...
Pure play to keep the ipad users from jumping ship.
That's my guess, too. The ipad mini has a sucky resolution, so it's out for me anyway.
So what?
It would be a good product and this is for sure. Competition is always healthy and I like it. The only thing I hate about Apple is the patent war. Their products are awesome.
I have both google and apple devices and even microsoft. I don't like to restrict myself to one camp and get whatever is best available no matter from whom it is.
Steve Jobs is dead... what he brought to Apple died with him and no one in the world, not even Tim Cook will be able to replicate that. Everyday Apple is turning more corporate which is why we will see a smaller Ipad. If Steve was still alive, there wouldn't any question about a 4" screen in the iphone5, he would simply say "that is what the ipad is for".
Simply... profit is king.
The fact that it's being talked about in the google nexus section of the forum indicates what Apple is doing is working. Buzz about it is exactly what they want. Like they say, the only thing worse than somebody talking about your product is nobody talking about your product.
If it does get released, I know many that will buy it. The resolution doesn't matter to them, as other than the new iPad and the as yet unreleased-to-the-public Android 1920px tablets, they aren't really far behind. Most 10.1" android tablets are 1280x800, not a huge huge jump for them.

The patent war is getting out of hand, its not just Apple although they do seem to be doing it more than most.
I own a mixture of manufactures products; Apple Macbook Pro laptop, Linux desktop, Samsung Android phone,Asus Android Tablet, Microsoft xbox.
I cant understand people who only buy from one manufacturer and never look anywhere else, my sister is a motorola loyalist, she has only ever owned Motorola phones and doesn't even consider any other make, when she was tablet shopping the only one she looked at was the Motorola Xoom. Personally I will buy the product that suits me best regardless of manufacture. the only reason I haven't tried a Win7 mobile yet is because I can't afford a decent one right now and testing out the OS with a bad phone will give me a negative impression.
I personally hope Apple do release a iPad mini, even though I have no intention of buying one, I just want to see more smaller/mid sized tablets coming out.
I actually think that the iPad Mini will be released this time, though. Apple can't just let their main competitor have the whole 7" market share, including the budget tablets (sub-$200). They're, of course, going to release a $200-250 iPad Mini to compete. Only they probably don't have the resources to make it as good as the Nexus 7. I'm guessing it will have the iPad 2 processor, a less crisp display, and, of course, be majorly locked down. But people will buy it because it's an Apple product.
I agree with "Simply... profit is king." thing is there is no margin in a 7" with google selling at cost. All it would do is pull sales from the 10" and loose them $$$

They have the benefit of brand and vendor lock-in, so a $50-$100 premium is not off the table.
It could go either way, I think. But you're right about one thing: it's advantageous for Apple to leak this, regardless of whether they were making one or not. Any hesitation during which they can further lock-in their customers would only be beneficial to them.

I think Apple could probably sell a 7" tablet at £300-350 (cheapest ipad is £399.00) sure its more than what the Nexus 7 and other 7" tablets cost, but people are willing to pay more purely because its Apple. Also if its marketed as a premium product like all Apple products are I could still see people buying it.

I pre ordered the n7 the day it was announced but I will also pick up an ipad mini when it comes out not just because it's an apple product but be a use of all the quality apps in the app store. I'm sure I'll love my n7 but the play store still has a ways to go before they can match the offering from the app store.

iPad Mini?
Or iPod Maxi?
With Steve Jobs gone, I suspect this is a more real possibility than the past.
People don't only want 7 inch tablets just because they are cheaper. The 7 inch form factor is really nice, some people prefer it. Others would probably buy a second tablet to supplement their existing 10 inch tablet.
I'm sure Apple would have released a 7 inch tablet earlier if Steve Jobs hadn't so famously put his put in his mouth.

Apple absolutely has the resources to pull this off. Though if their past has any say in how they run things they won't be willing to take a profit loss on this, mainly because they have already programmed their user base to pay a premium for their products. Whether or not it actually comes to market, well we will see. I think though that this would be a mistake for them to bow to this pressure to take a profit loss on a device as they are still the market leader in tablet sales by a long shot and their fan base would eat up a seven incher to sit next to their ipad 3. People who are buying a 9.7 inch ipad and the people who are purchasing the a 7 inch tablet are looking for different experiences fundamentally and they'd be fools not to tap into this market.
Google may be readying a revamped model of the middle sibling in its Nexus line of Android devices for as early as the first quarter of 2013, if the supply-chain snoops at Taiwanese tech news site DigiTimes are correct.

Not thinking much of anything to be honest.. good for them? I'll remain happy with my 1st gen 16Gb mobel.
A cheaper version is always welcome.

I could see the Nexus tablet line having the following:
A cheap ($99 seems low, but okay) 7". A higher quality 7" ($200-$250?). High quality 10".
While I have little money for toys, and I like paying low prices as much as anyone, I don't necessarily want a Nexus device that's had every cost corner cut. Especially things like storage and ram, which the current Nexus 7 seems to have slow parts.
Perhaps Google is trying to entice the masses further by lowering the price of a decent device, but I hope they realize that you can't make money off being the cheapest on the market. You might sell more, but your margins are smaller and your support costs are way higher because of cut corners and the sheer amount of people owning one.
I just see a lot of people being disappointed with this new device as you know they will compare it with the first Gen n7. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better.

I can see why they would want to offer a cheaper N7-type device, but my biggest concern is supply chain issues. The current Nexus 7 is the only device that hasn't had any severe supply issues from the play store in the past few months.... but that's probably mostly because it's already been out for 6 months.
I'm happy enough for my current N7
We have more than enough cheap low-end tablets on the market nowadays..

One would be paying more for a used/pre-owned N7 in excellent condition than buying the newest model, cheaper & slimmer. Hmmm :highfive: :fingers-crossed:
Maybe I should return mine to Staple as there is NO restocking fee & no questions asked - and wait for the newer one, 4.1.2 is such a mess in stock form anyway, LOL.
This reminds me of Samsung. They just made a half ass 4in budget phone to sell (S3 Mini). Their intent was to provide a phone for individuals who do not need a power house. The problem is the individuals who review phones like power houses. In many reviews Samsung was ridiculed for making the phone (even though it was meeting their intent). Hopefully Google is not treated the same way.
I can see the headline now, "iPad Mini ($349) dominates against new Google Nexus 7 ($99) .... Google stands no chance".

You're so right, I really like these Nexus phones (4 especially) and Galaxy S3, but the screen size puts me off - it's to big. Gimme a nice 4,2 inch with a decent resolution and I'm sold, but yes, such phones get lost in reviews because they don't stand a chance competing with 6" super triple HD 3D Gorilla Retina screen, 16core CPU and more RAM than my PC has.
I already have a decent tablet (N7), all I want is a decent dual, maybe cheap quad core, ~4" Nexus phone (once I got N7 I realized what android is really supposed to look like, because CM is not stable enough for me to run on my Xperia, so I kept it stock).
Of course Nexus line is only top notch, playing in the big league of S4 and iPhone6, so yes if they released a normal 4" nexus phone, headlines would say "where's your god now Android fans, always you have been bashing iPhones 'small' screen, now you're buying one yourself".
Nexus 7 is cheap enough as it is, we don't need another 800*480 7" tablet, that you can get in the Pharmacy (seriously, I saw some cheap tPads in local pharmacy), make a cheap Nexus phone!
Any news about it?
I'm on a low budget (about $150) and was hoping to get that cheap nexus 7 if it's released
It would be certainly better than those nasty china tablets..
99$?!
Cortex a8 + 512ram?
all i got from that site information is...... "made cheaper . thinner"............mmmmm wow
