[Q] do we really need bootstrap - Motorola Droid Bionic

Do I really need to install bootstrap or safestrap on my bionic if I don't plan on putting custom Rom in the near future? I only really want root for tibu and wireless tether.

No dude you dont need it if your not flashing roms. I'm sorry for people's stupidity on this forum. That's Is The Reason People Don't Take This Forum Seriously.

Personally I'd keep it just for the fact that you can do Nandroid backups. Full image of everything. So god forbid something does get badly hosed. You can fully restore back to whatever day you made it. Even if you aren't flashing ROMs and such. The back up ability alone is worth it. That is all I used it for with my Droid X

Yea I remember having it on the droidX I had a while back. But cant I make a nandroid with cwm? I've been on the thunderbolt for a while now so I have to get used to Motorola again.

You need to have installed and flashed the bootstrap before you can flash and use official cWM from the clockworkmod app. Otherwise it can't bootstrap around the locked bootloader

Bricking? Droid 3

I see one click root, etc, for this phone. I also see the scripts for removing bloatware.
How safe and stable is this software at this point? What are the chances of bricking this phone or getting it stuck in a BL?
Do we have a sbf yet?
Pretty safe. Yes there's SBF for XT862.
The root & script methods are pretty solid too
cool cool, just nervous to root my brand new phone and remove the bloat. You say its safe I'll take your word.

It was the first thing I did after charging my droid 3 (and I can't send it back because I'm in Europe)
I did:
1) Run one-click root
2) Make nandroid backup
3) Run debloat script
All went 100% smooth and I was done in 15min and I'm android noob
Well most roms get rid of a lot of bloatware. But i personally dont run those "scripts" i just use an app called titanium backup. U can freeze apps, make backups for them etc. Its the safest bloat removal option in my opinion. Have fun rooting!

yea ur good man. i already used the sbf once XD

You have to buy the paid version. Well worth it in my opinion. I used it on my Samsung Captivate. Not one Android phone should be with out it.
Sorry if this is noobish, I came from a droid incredible and this is my first motorola. Is an sbf file similar to an RUU file? RUU basically flashed everything, system files, radio etc. Basically, it brought you back to stock just like the day you bought it.

I traded my Galaxy Nexus for a Bionic

'Ello lads!.. So yes, I've traded my Galaxy Nexus for a Bionic(+ cash) with some fine chap. Sure the Nexus has a bit of a screen advantage but performance wise I honestly don't notice a dfference. The big thing is I'm glad the reception issues I was having with the Nexus are gone.
Anyway, that's alo for now. Cheerio!
Welcome! Update to .901 so this phone doesn't piss you. Can be a real slag without that update.
Cheers!

I am a bionic owner and love my phone, with that said you need to have your head examined I've been trying to get a nexus for weeks, lol. Just don't wanna pay $600 for it. If I could trade my bionic plus $200 or so I would be all over it!!!!!

So far I've done that Zerg manual root on the phone. Can I simply just download a ROM w/ .901 integrated or do I still have to do some sort of .901 update first?

well, the battery life was pretty bad on the thing and was pissed that the 'extended battery' was only 250mAh more then the stock. on top of that, unless the phone was charging in 'ac mode', it would lose charge if you were trying to use it while in 'usb mode' charging. also i had severe reception issues with it(kept going back & forth from 3g to 4g & occasionally lost signal all together). and finally, i wanted the extra cash for something.
either way though i qualify for another upgrade this march anyway... pretty sure though that i'm just going to hold off until the quad's are out.

If you look in one of the .901 threads you can find a link to.download the update. Flash it in bootstrap. After that you can change to any of the .901 compatible ROMs. I don't think the ROMs update the radio.

I would stay away from the nexus from what I have been reading. Getting some bad reviews.
I have a Tbolt and the Bionic and I like the Bionic better. The only thing the Bionic does not do is be on the phone and surf at the same time on 3G, but I never do that...
Now that I rooted the Bionic I like it even better, but just staying on the stock rom and stock radio I have no issues. Great phone...

Yeah, in reality there is nothing wrong with my Bionic and once we get ICS I'll be content. Kudos to Moto for setting the trend, announcing the Bionic would get ICS before other manufacturers made statements about their devices.

yeah the how to's in the dev section aren't exactly user friendly. basically though, i was not able to get CWM to work on it's own. you have to download that "Safestrap" .apk and install it. after doing so, it will install recovery itself. once that's done, you reboot your phone and press the MENU key once prompted, then you'll go into recovery.

Thanks I will get that a shot today.
Update... Working now. Thanks again
I may write out a few how to's with all the fixes.
I agree, out of all the phones/tabs I've rooted/ROM'd the how to's in the Bionic Dev section are a bit...lacking.
All the info is there, but it takes you 5 hours to figure it out b/c the steps, dummy guides, fixes are spread out all over the place between here and a few other forums.
Safestrap is really nice though.

Yeah, your right. I don't know exactly what safestrap is (assuming its similar to bootstrap which I use) and when I tried to research it I got confused and just decided to stick with bionic bootstrap since I can't find a reason why its needed even though everyone talks about it.
I wouldn't use rom manager, just do everything in one of the two recoveries. Here's a breakdown of the recoveries for the Bionic
Bionic Safestrap
-Allows two system partitions
-One system is non-safe system where your main stock system resides. You can make and restore backups in this partition but you cannot install custom roms.
-The other system is safe system. This is the partion that lets you install roms and what not.
-You can toggle between the two systems from within safestrap recovery. It will automatically backup the current system before switching over.
-Safestrap has a nice feature that prevents bricks. On restart if Safestrap is installed there is a boot menu that pops up. You can hit the menu button to get into recovery from there. This comes in handy if you are having a bootloop. Just pull battery, restart phone and hit menu key when safestrap animation appears.
-One downside is that webtop doesn't work in safe system and the rom may run a tad bit slower in safe system partition
Bionic Bootstrap
-This is the riskier one
-This is more like regular clockwork recovery. You boot intro recovery from the bootstrap app.
-You can make backups, install roms etc in bootstrap recovery
-If you enter a bootloop while using bootstrap recovery, your phone is pretty much bricked. Because of the encrypted bootloader there is not a way to get back into recovery if using bootstrap. You will have to use sbf/fxz from a pc computer to unbrick your phone.
*You can use bootstrap to install a custom rom as your main system, and then install safestrap after if you want. But fully know what your are doing before you do this. If you don't use webtop, I recommend safestrap recovery for everything. Here is something I wrote over at Droidforums
-I have been testing roms out in safestrap to make sure they install and load up correctly
-I then toggle back to my main system in safestrap
-I then uninstall safestrap and install bootstrap.
-Then I boot into bootstrap recovery through that app
-Make a backup in bootstrap (always have a backup of your stock unmodified system)
-Wipe data and cach
-Install the Rom that I first tested in safestrap
-After Rom loads up and your are done flashing you can install safestrap again if you want. This way you will have a rom as your safe system and you can have another rom as your non-safe system. Webtop will work with roms on your main system.

It's not possible to talk and surf at the same time on Verizon's 3g network. I don't believe that is a feature most people need or would even use, but it sounds good on the commercials.

The Nexus isn't worth it. I've tested it out and wasn't too impressed. One big thing I didn't like about it was that it only had 3 buttons compared to the normal 4 (home, back, search, menu). That might not be as big of deal with newer users who aren't as used to certain things, but I've been with Android for almost 3 years so the typical 4 buttons is a must as its something I became used to.
As far or the specs, its nothing to get excited about when they have much better coming out this spring and summer.
As far as ice cream sandwich, the bionic is getting it and will have Google's help with getting it set up for our phones.

rooted no bootstrap
You have to install either Bootstrap or Safestrap to make nandroid backups with this phone.
which is better safestrap or bootstrap is there a difference?
Bootstrap is simpler but has less features. Personally it's the one I use, as it seems to do the job fine when running stock as I do. If you plan to install a lot of different ROMs, such as the ICS alpha, then you might be better off using Safestrap. It basically creates two system images, one stock and the other a custom ROM. The idea is that if you go into a bootloop with one system, you can switch to the other one instead of being stuck. There are some drawbacks -- I have heard it uses some RAM and slightly degrades performance. Also, Webtop works on one system but not the other.
I have always used bootstrap and never had any issues.

I have never used safestrap I am sure it works great. But since I am new to bionic if you bootloop can't you pull battery boot up in android recovery and wipe data and cache? Works everytime on droidx2.
If you want to play with other roms while having a main rom that you use daily, go with safe strap. If your going to stick to one rom, either one will work. You can flash and backup with each one.

You have to do it through Safestrap. Just boot the phone and when you get to the safestrap menu, make sure you're in the unsafe side and do a backup. Rom Manager and Safestrap don't mix.

Thank you linuxgator! If I am on the safe side, can I create a Nandroid of the unsafe side or do I have to toggle over first?
On a slightly less related question, does the battery charge while in Safestrap?
I believe there is an option to include the main system in a backup on the safe side, however I would recommend switching back to unsafe to make a backup. Also, I think they can only be restored using safestrap. It should charge just fine pretty much any time it is plugged in even in safestrap.

Unrooting Bionic

I rooted my phone a while ago using Motofail and would like to update my phone so I can put the ICS update on it that was pushed out the other day. I am kinda a noob to hacking my phone and would really like some help with this. I have found the Motofail for ICS for once I install ICS.
http://droidmodderx.com/bionic/
This guy has a lot of tutorials on YouTube & needed files for you to download
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda app-developers app
Just download and install all parts of House of Bionic and follow the on-screen instructions. In order to un-root you need to choose option 2 then option 2 again. Check out the FAQ if you have trouble with ADB. Read the post very carefully and probably more than once but it is actually very simple.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/4026-samurihls-house-of-bionic/
Thanks Samuri for this script, I have been telling everyone about it. Cheers!
?
does anyone know if the apps that hide the root will work or do I have to completely unroot the phone?
rooting the phone
as you most likely know motofail will root the phone, settings applications unknown sources, development usb debugging i also check leave screen on, then when usb is plugged in make sure charge only, have a good charge also on yer battery, if in 7 right click on motofail run as admin
i also like to have wifi already going and download root checker, this verifies, sometimes, dunno why, when i go to one rom or another i have to use one version of motofail or another version of it, also motooneclick worked for me also,
either way that'll get your phone rooted, i haven't done anything with ics, i did see a version of motofail for rooting ics afterwards
i'm on eclipse 2.2 which i just love, need anything else gimme hollar, skype allen-sec or yahoo allensecz
learning the bionic and this myself, been at it for about a month, learned a lot, just don't have 3g flowing yet,
so if you got that going on yours, hey gimme hollar
sincerely, mrbeav
Bare with please
I asked in a different thread but I got some things answered but not all exactly.
I keep hearing if I want to unroot my Bionic I need to use all the HoB files or FXZ. I will explain why I'm still a little confused.
I used Razrs Edge to root my bionic earlier this week after the OTA ICS update. Worked in like 3 minutes and put safestrap v3.05 on and made a backup of my stock OS. I want to restore and then remove safestrap but I'm confused on how to unroot. Since all the unroot methods seem to be based around HoB or motofail or using the Pete's files (which the links never seem to work)
What i need/want answered is how do I unroot it if I used the Razrs Edge method of rooting? With one of the methods i mentioned above work? If so, which one please and will i just follow the same method?
My reasoning is when/if JB OTA comes out I want to unroot to get it so i figured since I'm involved now, I might as well learn how to unroot it now and get it over with.
Thanks
Eric
