So incredibly stupid question, and not even sure how to search for it to get an answer... but I want to connect my touchpad to my computer like I used to with CM7 and transfer files over. Normally when I connected it in the past I'd get a little notification telling me I can turn on usb storage or whatever... that doesn't show up now with CM9... what do I do?
If you read the wiki, it doesnt work with cm9 yet. Boot into recovery, go to Mounts and Storage, then go down to Mount USB Storage.

Try using Wifi File manager apps.
I use the Wifi File Explorer Pro do transfer files from my PC to android devices. No physical connection is needed since it's done through wifi.
Install this app (or others. They seem to work very similarly) and launch the app on the device. Leave it running so if you have a lot of files, you might want to keep it plugged into a charger.
The apps will give you an IP address.
Go to your PC and launch a web browser. Type in the address the app gave you. You are now connected. Go to the folder you need to add files to and search your PC for files to transfer. Done...

What I'm told you are supposed to do is to open /Settings/Developer Options and uncheck Android debugging. Then when you connect to a Windows computer, it will see the TP as an MTP device.
Unfortunately, I've yet to get this to work. I've tried a couple of Win7 boxes and both see the TP as an MTP device and try to load drivers for it. But after a couple of minutes trying, it pops up an error message saying if failed to load the drivers. On an XP box the only option you get when you plug in the TP are to use either Media Center or Winamp, both of which seem to look only for "media" files.
The only way I've found to transfer files directly to/from the TP is to reboot and choose Clockwork Mod from the boot menu and then /mounts and storage/mount USB storage. Then your TP appears as a regular USB hdd on whatever computer you connect.
I've tried to google for MTP support but the only things I've found relate to connecting Digital Cameras.
Okay so no offense but you all have it wrong. I can see my CM9 Alpha 2 in my Windows 7 desktop machine just fine. You need to do the following:
1) Go into Settings
2) Click on the Storage
3) Up in the right top corner of your TouchPad screen you see 3 boxes, click (touch) that.
4) Then click (touch) USB computer connection that pops up
5) Now make sure the box labeled Media device (MTP) is checked
DONE! You should be able to connect your TouchPad booted into CM9 Alpha 2 and transfer files over to it just fine. Mine comes up as cm_tenderloin on my Windows 7 64-bit if I recall correctly!
I hope this helps and I hope it works! Let me know!

The same way you'd find any other file on the TP. Use a File Manager such as Root Explorer.

I'll have to try this MTP option. I've just been using the wifi file browsers like Airdroid or booting into WebOS for file transfer. Thanks.

Hey, everyone, I tried posting about this in the CM7 general discussion thread, but no one seemed apt to respond.
I think this was a problem that popped up in the 60s or 70s in terms of nightlies, but I'm having it again now since around the 155 mark.
I'm on 160 and when I plug my NC into the USB cable, I no longer get any options to connect for file transfers in the notification area. If anyone could help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it. It's just so perplexing and no one seems be having this issue except me. If it's user-side error, that's fine as well, I'd just like to know how to fix it.
1. When you plugged the NC in, did the PC recognize any "removable" drive?
2. In the notification area, did you see any other indication?
3. You run CM7 off uSD or eMMC?

1. No, nothing comes up.
2. The notification area remains blank.
3. I'm running it off eMMC.
Thanks for taking the time, by the way!
If so, unplug the usb cable then replug in a few times and see what happens.
If still nothing, try to use other usb cable.
Oh, btw, have you had Nookcolotweaks app installed?
I do have Nook Tweaks installed, yes. I'm using the cable that came with the Nook, but I'm not sure I have any other cables around.
Do make sure you check OFF the USB Host feature (reboot and reconnect)
I gave that a try, too, but still nothing. So confusing!
Don't be so hard on yourself.
Let try it on different computer if you have.
Also try difference usb cable.
Last, if nothing works, update latest nightly build
When you disconnect and reconnect the nook in testing/trying to get it recognized... unplug usb cable from computer... its made a difference at times.
I know this sounds basic but in applications-settings ensure you have usb debugging checked. Sometimes when flashing different nightlies, settings change.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Thanks again for all the help, everyone! I made sure USB debugging was checked and tried unplugging/replugging the cable, but there's still no notification coming up.
A new development:
I tried connecting it to my Windows PC instead of my Linux and it brought up this message that said it didn't recognize the device. I also tried to get ADB to see it and it can't. Does this information help or am I in trouble here?
Next time, do clearly indicate that you are using Linux or Windows. I'm sure many members here are Linux but still far less support than Windows world.
When I provided those suggestions in previous posts, I meant in Windows.
Anyway, back to your issue.
1. "it didn't recognize the device" because of missing adb usb driver. You need to get it installed first in order to use ADB, however it has nothing to do with your usb mass storage function. For now, you don't need to worry about it just yet.
2. Back to my question before, have you seen any "removable" on the PC (Windows)
Along with USB Host uncheck, if still having problem, I would suggest you either downgrade to the earlier versions or wait until tomorrow and update with another nightly build.
Good luck
I have the ADB drivers installed in Windows, as far as I know. I've used it before.
I typed "adb devices" into the prompt and it doesn't see the NC at all. Since one of the nightlies seems to be what prompted this sudden change in connectivity, I guess I'll just hope that one of the new ones can fix it. Thanks again.
Also, Windows doesn't show anything "removable" except for my external HD.
Try to disable usb debugging as you can still use ADB over wifi. This should always put the device to usb storage mode when connected.

I tried this out and even ADB wireless can't connect to my device. I even re-installed the ADB drivers in Windows to be sure the problem wasn't on that end.

If you're using ADB wireless, no need to install any driver on Windows PC, you just need 2 files: adb.exe and AdbWinApi.dll, to connect to Android device.
If you've installed ADB drivers, you might want to remove it as this might mess up usb storage.

Alrighty. I have those two. I've connected my NC to ADB both wirelessly and and with the cable in the past, so this should all be straightforward anyhow. It just plain refuses to cooperate.
Go to the Marketplace and download "Nook Color UMS" app. Follow instructions and it will mount properly. I had the same issue used it and it mounts proper through the app.
I'm using dReWs Ginger Faux ICS Rom (first rom in my sig) and its been mounting fine until a few days ago. When they're both connected by the usb cable, i get the notification if i want to copy files to/from the pc, so i click that and i get to the option to turn on the mass storage thing, so i press okay to that and at first it's a green android, then when it's done, its orange. The thing is, that when it claims to be mounted as a disc drive, i check my computer and it's not showing up. I checked the devices and printers menu and it shows up as android phone, so i tryed to update the driver for it but apparently it is already. I also have "HTC BMP USB Driver" installed as well as "HTC Driver Installer". I had them installed since i was using htc sync but i'm not anymore. Should i uninstall them? Lemme know if you can help, thanks.
If you need more info, just let me know...
Edit- sigh...
Can someone help me? Or should i go to the Windows 7 forum instead?
Hi all,
Just flashed CM9 on my Touchpad and am wondering if I'm missing a USB driver or something. When I was on WebOS I could connect the TP to my PC and select the option to turn on Mass Storage with no issues. After flashing when I connect the TP Win 7 tries to install a driver but fails to do so.
What am I missing? I can connect my Galaxy Nexus to the PC with no issues so I'm at a loss.
in storage under advanced theres a setting to connect with usb.mine works.win 7 still said failed to install driver but it still works
Yeah go to storage, select the three dots on the right hand corner and press USB computer connection. Then select MTP. I had to switch mine between MTP and PTP a couple of times before windows 7 installed the driver properly.
Bingo. That was it.
Thanks guys!
(Isn't it odd that neither MTP or PTP is checked by default?)
Edit: Looks like I spoke too soon. When connected via PTP the computer recognizes the connection but for some reason won't let me copy/paste anything to the SD Card. When I try to connect via MTP the PC just says its a "USB composite device" so I can't access the volume. Grrrr.
Windows XP and MTP Problem
I had problems trying to connect to windows XP via the MTP interface but the driver kept failing to install.
I checked the MTP box and tried switching between MTP and PTP but with no joy.
I then switched off the USB debugging in Developer options reconnected and XP installed the driver fist time and all is working well.
Thanks for the help!!! Keep up the good work.
BAM! Worked like a charm!
I was getting a little frustrated. You guys are lifesavers.

I agree. Even if you get the USB connection to work in CM9, there is a file size limitation on transfers. I don't recall exactly what the size is but I know I had trouble with a "nightly" image I was tryubf to install. Now I either use CWM or transfer via a wireless FTP app. "WiFi File Transfer" from the Play Store.
Wifi is a little slower but you don't have to bother connecting the cable and setting everything up. Once you set up WiFi FT the first time, it just takes a couple of clicks to connect and start a file transfer.

Try doing a factory reset from within Android, I hope this helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/64gb-stuck-23gb-t2970279
Read down a few posts. It worked for me on 5.1.1.
I also have the same problem but with the 32gb version.
I started with a locked unrooted 5.1.1 Nexus 6.
I followed the instructions from Google's file image site.
I unlocked the boot loader.
Then ran the flash all script that failed, so I manually flashed the phone.
Phone rebooted and started up fine.
I attempted to re-lock the boot loader but it failed.
When connected to a windows system the phone shows up on auto play but file explorer shows No files or folders.
Tried a factory wipe still nothing.
worked

Yes. The phone defaults to charge-only mode via USB, which prohibits file transfer; this is why the device folder was empty in Windows. Switch to MTP mode via the notification shade and it will appear as it normally does.
In addition, in Developer options, you can configure the default USB mode, so as to prevent this from happening in the future.
or, just move into the 21st century, and use a program like wifi explorer pro, and never have to connect with a usb cable to transfer anything ever again..

Agreed that apps like this are very convenient. Sometimes still prefer hardwiring for transferring 20-30 GB worth of stuff, even though MTP is a total drag.

This fixed my Issue. It was set to MTP but I switched it to Charge only then back to MTP and it works now.
Thank you.
with a fast wifi connection, its not really much slower to transfer big stuff as well; although, how often are you transferring 20-30 gigs of stuff???
I think I have used the cable to transfer maybe 3 or 4 times since I got this phone..wireless charging, no cables to transfer files, its time to embrace 2015!
TWRP Resize partition function
Addressing just the problem posed in the title of this thread, if you have TWRP installed, or if you choose to install it after you discover this problem, then you have an option that will preserve your data: use the new "resize partition" function within recovery.
Boot to TWRP (version 2.8.7.1 or higher)
Choose "Wipe" button (do not slide yet!!) then "Advanced Wipe" button.
Select the Data partition, then "Repair or Change File System" button.
Choose the Resize button.
Now you can slide to confirm, and it will expand the partition to it's full potential, without disturbing the data.

Sorry for OT:
Definitely doesn't work on a rooted Nexus 5. It always jumps back to charge only. Does this work 100% on Nexus 6 devices?
File transfer also doesn't work properly for me (and at least one other person in the NExus 5 Troubleshooting subforums), if you want to move a folder onto the SD card which has a system file and / or subfolders in it, it will most likely fail. There are also a lot of folders not showing in Windows Explorer, so if i.e. I want to move Titanium Backup files to the SD card I just can't place a folder and name it "Titanium Backup" because it won't get recognized. I have to create a dummy folder, place the backup files in there and then move them manually with ES File Explorer to the now visibile real TB folder.
That bothered me so much I did a rollback to Lollipop, hopefully those things get fixed by Google or with an Xposed module (if this is working somewhen).
--- SOLVED see first post second page! ---
Hello XDA,
I am only able to read data on the phone when connected via USB on windows. On the phone itself I can change whatever I want ( Via ES-explorer for example) But in windows file explorer I can't. It will not tell me that I do not have proper writing rights, but instead just decides to freeze for 10 minutes everytime I try to make a file change, to eventually give me a beautiful
"windows explorer is not responding" pop-up
What I have tried :
-Rebooting,
-Reinstalling USB drivers,
-Switching USB debugging on and off,
-Reinstalling root,
-Installing the newest Oxygen OS update from February,
-used different cables (also an old micro USB with adapter) And nothing works.
This sucks because I was just trying to change my photography workflow from being Desktop based to being Android based..
Any suggestions ?

How should one file a bug-report for windows 10 then, this can't be something that shouldn't keep unnoticed by them.
Did rolling back fix something for you, and how did you do so?
I've checked another Windows 10 computer which hasn't been updated and it recognises my one plus 3T so if you Google / YouTube windows 10 roll back it should work
Hmm this does suck. This means I cant be up to date on windows for now. Anybody have different suggestions?

Did you try back usb ports?. My pc with windows 10 fails with the front ports.
Solution
Backup all the data in your internal memory and try the 'format data' option from twrp to wipe your internal storage. It could solve your problem, as it did in my case.
New solution, just done works!
Plug in your phone and on the computer go to device manager (have phone in MTP mode)
you'll find the phone as a unknowen device
right click on this select "update driver software..."
a window will pop up select "browse my computer for driver softaware"
then on the next bit select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my comupter"
then you will have a box with "MTP Device" and "MTP USB device"
select "MTP USB device" hit next and it should work 100%
