CM9 vs Galaxian Soup - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Hi,
Can someone help to state the difference between CM9 and Galaxian soup for Tab 8.9? performance, appearance, benchmarking, smoothness?
Thanks

the difference in minimal i highly doubt you will be able to notice a difference. Benchmarks are similar, overclocking potential is similar. A lot of the differences are placebo affect if there are any.
Galaxian Soup is based off of the Android Open Source Project, AOSP, which means it is as close to stock Android as humanly possible.
CM9 is a port based off of a CyanogenMod 9 ROM for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 it was originally a port but now it is an official CM9 ROM. Cyanogen has more features then stock Android. Like a heavily customization launcher (trebucket in CM9), a theming engine, and other built in tools. CM9 doesn't have as many features as CM7 but it will get there
The choice is a matter of preferences. Do you want a stock Android experience that you get to customize how you prefer, or do you want to take CM9 and use the tools they provide to make customization easier.

Not in my experience, granted that these benchmarks are a couple weeks old and both teams have released updates since.
Performance Comparison: ICS ROMs under development for Galaxy Tab 8.9
Build philosophy is also different. Galaxian Soup is as close to stock ICS as possible and thus lacks CM9 distinctives such as Trebuchet launcher, DSP audio controls, boot animation, etc.

Which Gingerbread for my Nexus - Please?

Hi,
i am new to Nexus One Android Development and i am a bit confused.
There are so many Gingerbread ROMs out there and i cannot decide.
I firstly wanted to install MoDaCos Sense Build but that is buggy for me - so now i want Gingerbread on my N1.
Unfortunately there are CM7 based/stock ones/google AOSP's/GRI40s/2.3.2's/2.2.3's/pure google mods/OFIICIALS/Devs onlys etc. - Versions!
Can anyone be so kind to filtrate that a bit?
This shouldn't be a "Best GB-BUILD"-Thread - I just want a clean and stable Gingerbread running with my purchased launcherpro plus!
I don't want it bleading edge, but fast and stable!
Which one of the thousands out there should i run on my N1?
Hi bunnahabhain,
I have tried various gingerbread roms, most have had some annoying bugs like hspda freezing, random FCs. The one that works the best for me is the CM7 RC2 which is the equivalent of Gingerbread 2.3.3. It is yet to bug out on me and it runs very smooth. In fact i havent had to restart the phone since I installed the rom. Surprisingly it also takes less space on the phone then most roms I've tried.
Hope this helps. It is bleeding edge but it is very smooth and hasn't been buggy at all for me.
I am using the stock gignerbread, with launcher pro plus/setcpu and automatic task killer.
It runs very well, no crashes, no bugs, it's fast, I sugest you do the same.
Add a poll to thread and list available options for people to vote?
DONE - 8 by number
just chose the most favorite ones
Stock/Official/Vanilla are the same. Just what the names suggest really.
Cyanogenmod is by far the most widely used custom ROM. Many of the others are based off this, with various alterations being made to them. Close to Stock appearance but feature filled and very fast. Version 7 is in development now and two of the polled ROMS are in fact from this development.
There have been two Release Candidates which are considered 'stable', and there are ongoing 'Nightly' builds, (experimental), but which are really just a daily evolution of the development. As it stands the latest Nightly builds are very stable, very fast and well worth trying.

No trackball wake on any Gingerbread ROMs derived from stock. No modification has been found to enable it.
On the other hand, they don't suffer from wonks like CM7 and any CM7-based ROM.
I was loving stock gingerbread but switched over to cm7 after missing trackball wake
MIUI gets Gingerbread on Friday, that will be my choice.
I am on pure googlemod now!
But don't think just that i chose a ROM that nobody voted for would leave this POLL ad absurdum
It seems that the base of that ROM is CM7-NIGHTLY, which is the thing to go for if you want more speed in the ROM with a custom kernel (otherwise no camera).
Because i wanted the stock GB style i firstly chose GEOs stock deodexed one, but switched after i got the mentioned camera probs.
Now, with redstars custom kernel it is the fastest ROM i have ever used on my N1 (42 Mflops in Linpack)
Unfortunately it is still miles away from this insane ROM for the HD2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918899
You can't imagine how fast and stable that ROM is, really!
Since it is open source the N1 DEVs could look into the code couldn't they?
sense or nothing
I am on the Geo build but I am waiting for a Sense UI gingerbread release. I am following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995445 but hoping Evil D can bring his magic to a GingerSense build
I've been using CM7 RC 2 after having been using enom's roms for froyo. It is pretty damn stable and lets you use trackball wake which lots of gingerbread roms don't support.

[Q]LPY+CWM without TW with full AOSP ICS apps?

Well for instance i flashed my Note with the last LPY and CWM, but after using CM9, Stunner, Imilka's rom, touchwiz is really boring me...
I'd like to find a way to put the official look and feel of the original AOSP apps that can be found in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus...
Okay some of you are telling me use XX Rom or YY Rom, but in fact i appreciate the LPY stability, Note S apps, and today none of the available roms is offering the full AOSP look and feel with the LPY kernel...
CM9 even in nightly is for the moment not really stable...Too bad because trebuchet is really good...
Of course i don't like to use other launchers (go launcher etc etc)to put skins because these are using resources...
The best rom for instance is Imilka's one which is not doing too much (not too much of useless things), and is really near perfection of AOSP.
When an LPY kernel with full AOSP?
Thanks mates!

[Q] Paranoid Android or KingDroid NoteMania?

Hi People
I am new to the world of custom rom. I just rooted my phone and i am looking into proceeding with installing ICS through a custom rom.
After some research i have narrowed it dow to two choices.
Paranoid Android vs. KingDroid NoteMania
Paranoid Android is fascinating but after correspondence with a member from here he has told me that:
"in russian forums many peoples have *mmc* issues with "paranoid android" latest version, so choice is obvious for me: Kingdroid note mania is better, just because it's safer."

Is that true?
About KingDroid now i have nothing to report or ask. It looks perfect, except for the fact that it doesn't have tablet mode which i really want to get the feel of.
Now some general questions.
I have heard that custom roms have minor but frustrating glitches in various things.
I was wondering what i should expect...?
Anything other noteworthy that i might need in order to make an informed decision?
Ps. Right now i have a problem with my Note. It breaks off deep sleep spontaneously as if awakening from a bad dream.
Will a custom Rom fix that? Will it bring me other nightmares?
What is your experience with these two roms?
Thank you in advance people.

I suggest you go throughout the respective post in the development section. For PA, it is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802
Start at posts after June 27, then you skip problems of previous versions.
I went through almost everything and it appears there are hardly any issues. I personally do not have any, except that I have not yet figured out how to change the sort order for my movies in the Gallery app; it appears it always sorts by file date or so. Anyway, off topic and not really a bug I guess.
PA is quite unique in the sense that you can have phone mode and tablet mode apps simultaneously. I like that. On ICS, I was very disappointed about the email app. In PA, this is simply great.
To install PA, you go back to GB or any other safe kernel, hence there is no emmc issue as someone suggested to you. PA itself uses a safe kernel of CM9, so no issues here either.
About Kingdroid, no idea. I will stick with PA as it fits my needs.
I suggest that's exactly what you should do: try for yourself to see does it fit. It's like with shoes. Asking someone else whether they fit is pointless...
_____________________________________
If I helped you I'd appreciate your THANKS!
Just try all the roms out here.
Only after you have tested a few roms can you tell which one suits your needs.
I've tried almost all of them here in xda: Rocket Rom, Kingdroid, Asylum, AOKP, ParanoidAndroid, Ganbarou, Cassie's, AllianceRom, LiquidSmooth, Criskelo, Chrack. Although CM9/AOSP/AOKP roms have a million possibilities of customization i found that tw based roms suit my needs better. After many flashes i'm currently on AllianceRom which i think it's the best for me, smooth, customizable, stable.
I have narrowed down to exactly these two ROMS. PA or KD. I wish someone did feature comparison

Well before i used to use DarkyRom (for NOTE is alliance ). Gnex was with paranoid android.
But for me know for the first time one question crossed my mind. Do I really need to avoid TW for example and the benefits I have and love from use of S-PEN.
So I am now looking for a good Stock rooted ROM. not AOSP or AOKP anymore.
I am loosing too much with them. And I need NOTE mostly for business so my choice is obvious.

Clear answers to clear questions.. It only depends on your own likes.. Try both and see..
PA its as safe as any other safe rom as it uses cm9 kernels (well known to be safe) Also Kindroid its safe because they use a safe kernels in aroma installer...
And Kindroid DOES have tablet mode just it does not support any kind of touchwiz ui they use apex launcher (aosp looks like launcher) for this mode

I think we're heading in a wrong direction...Why don't focus on 2.3.6?

If you want JB, get Galaxy Young S6310.
It's the same phone as mini2, just different design, more RAM, CPU preclocked to 1GHz, and JB 4.1.2 preinstalled. It has the same price as the mini 2.
S6310 has 768MB of RAM. mini 2 only has 512MB. It's enough for 4.1, but not enough for optimal performance. Look at Xperia E, every reviewer has noticed lags with the official 4.1 on it.
I fully agree with TheWhisp's post about how we use drivers not suited for 4.2 (or 4.1 too). Without official LIB's and official kernel, we'll always have a half-baked CM. And that's not TheWhisp's problem. It's Samsung's problem for releasing new models every three seconds, and ditching support for the older models. WE WON'T HAVE JB ON MINI 2! THEY HAVE S6310 FOR THIS PROBLEM!
CM should only be an option, not a necessity that every mini 2 user should install, just because there's nothing else for our phone.
Look at Sony's Live With Walkman, it has 512MB of RAM too. Everyone is reporting better performance on official 2.3.6, than in official 4.0.4!
The BEST thing for our phone would be a new kernel for 2.3.6. Not the squadzone's, because it has some problems with certain stock ROM's. Isn't it sad that we only have ONE custom kernel for 2.3.6. And only TWO good ROM's for mini 2? (CM10 and CM10.1). I knows there's many 2.3.6 ROM's but they are mostly just squadzone's kernel + additional visual tweaks + removed bloatware + useless build.prop modifications, simply because there's nothing else to do with 2.3.6. I know it might sound like I'm begging you, but why don't make a new kernel for 2.3.6? With fix for the famous LK2 no-WiFi bug, and perhaps better performance.
I do not want this phone's development to be stale and almost non-existent.
If I didn't have to start school in 2 days, I would be a developer and help with everything, but there's more important stuff than mini 2. I'm just proposing an idea.

Okay, i've corrected some typing errors in your post. Typing errors fixed are in bold.
And, i agree with you.

Yeah, it's also the stablest one to date. CM7.2 also loads alots of customization than CM9, CM10 or even 10.1 and 10.2.
You are right. I have squadzone kernel but i wanted some better. Someone that could make a new kernel and, why not, also a new rom.
PS: someone should make a list with all roms for our device, like in other forums.

Yes. I have to agree with you. There no need to wait for official jellybean anymore. I think Samsung also headache how to make a smooth jellybean rom on low end device. For low end device, I think gingerbread is better.
I list down what I want in mini 2 :good:
ROM:
- Based on latest 2.3.6 firmware
- Bloatwares removed
- Deoxeded
- Zipaligned
- Tweaks to make it more faster and smooth compared to stock
- Themed (optional) - Galaxy S4 icon, font, new accuweather, blue statusbar instead of shiny green, percentage battery, beautiful bootscreen
- anything good for user
Kernel
- kernel build based on goals "smooth, fast, battery saving, stable"
- 3 step different freq 200,500,800 MHz (non OC kernel), 4 step 200,500,800,1000 MHz (OC kernel)
- tweaks to make it smooth and stable experience for user
- anything good for user
If only I am capable on doing all this.....:
Thank you for your post, you've bought some interesting ideas. I would personally have the ROM Odexed, as the performance would be better.
I think I would add the 6th step in the OC kernel, which would be 1126MHz, for max performance.
But I'm no kernel compiler. Although I will try to change the squadzone's kernel logo to show S6500 and not S6500D, as it's the wrong model I have.
I'm thinking about sorting stuff out with all the components we currently have. But that takes time.
I don't like huge theming, the only awesome thing for me would be the percentage battery.
Cm 10.1 works even faster than stock for me. Games work well too.
Sent from my GT-S6500 using Tapatalk 2
That's good for you, but this isn't a topic to bash CM10(.1;.2), it's simply an idea that we should have a much wider choices of custom ROMs for mini 2.
Well, we already have plenty. Maybe when thewhisp finishes working on 10.1 which is nearly complete he will grace us with cm 7. Just an idea.
We also need more devs, i dont see many ppl working on jena roms

Yes I agree with low end device work faster in 2.3.6 than 4.0 and above. My brother own xperia tipo and it is lagging on 4.0.4. I guess it is better if it on 2.3.6. While my sister own mini 2 S6500D running on 2.3.6.
I mention about theming before, it is not heavy theming mate. I also like you. I prefer profesional look and minimalist theme. A theme that have clean, neat and professional look from boot screen to user interface. And yes % battery would be great.
But sadly low end device not much developers, so we may have to wait.
My phone works twice as fast on CM 10.1.
No major bugs or anything.
Overclocked to 1Ghz.
Runs smoother than before.
Works faster than s3 mini on stock (tested with antutu)
I dont see why this phone wont work with oficial jellybean.
Galaxy Music has 512 ram and works grat with oficial jellybean.

[Q] Differences between the stock 4.1.2 and the custom KitKats

Are there any noticeable improvements (performance-wise) in the custom KitKat ROMs and the stock 4.1.2? I mean, are there any changes that you can feel and see, or is it just a new android version with fancy new features?
Also I'd wait until a stable version of OmniROM or CM gets built until I try to flash my device.

I have flashed CM nightlies, PA nightlies, 4.3 PAC and Omni ROM.. Each Rom has its own unique features and performance difference!..
But personally i would say, those has its own + and - things..
The last ROM i flashed 4.4.2 Dirt Unicorns Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2633846 ) seemed Great to me.. Overall Nice features cheery picked from all ROMS but again its individual's preference in the end of the day and Every ROM is unique in its own way!
NOTE:- S-Note, S planner and other samsung apps will work only if you are flashing a Touchwiz based Rom.. Those apps wont work in CM, PA and AOKP Roms cuz they need TW framework to work with!
If you are thinking of flashing of TW based Roms, i would recommend 2 Roms to take a look at..
X-Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320871 ) This is the Rom, i am currently using.. It will give your phone a tablet UI, thus taking advantage of your Note's large real estate screen! .. Multi window, floating window and buttery smooth and lots of features!
You can also check out the Note 8 Apps ported to our galaxy note N7000, if you are interested.. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217662 )
Arya Mod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52357155 ) This is also a great Rom and cool icons and themes!
I can't say I've been using any of the TouchWiz features, to be honest.
Just a few things I don't like on the stock ROM: The gallery takes a long time to open, opening the contacts takes a bit, and the animations sometimes glitch out (they just get skipped). And I'm locked to my current provider, but as my guarantee is at an end, I'm looking for a custom ROM to get out of the damn simlock, and maybe fix some other things as well.
So if you could just point out a few major differences (both performance wise, and feature wise) between CM, Omni and Dirt Unicorns, that'd be awesome. Of course I'd still wait for a stable version to come out.
I'm not really sure if I want a TW based ROM, not that I was using any of it's features. They always were a tad bit laggy on my phone. Mainly I'm looking for a ROM that'll run the smoothest, and that's the main thing, all eye-candy and fancy stuff is just icing on the cake. But I'll check out the ROMs you linked (the links seem to be wrong, tho). Thanks a lot!
I'll post another question in the same thread, so I don't have to open another one and clutter the board.
Are the OmniROM and CM nightlies stable? Also, is the only way to update CM to download and flash a new version of the OS, since there's that opendelta thing on Omni, where you can just download the update, just like real OTA?

They aren't stable but can be used as daily driver depending upon your usage. For Omnirom there is open delta, you can check for updates in settings>About Phone and it would only download the update not the whole rom.

I doubt 4.4 will ever be 100% stable, but god bless the cooks that keep coming up with updates, since for obvious reasons,
Samsung won't port past 4.1.2 officially.
Personally, for my usage, I've skipped everything past 4.1.2, as I can go weeks between reboots, lock ups, and with a custom
launcher (go launcher), my device is smooth and rock stable. It has a stock (DBT german international device) rom, rooted,
custom kernal just in case I forgot and didn't want to erase and endure the brick bug. Uninstalled the DBT bloat.
2+ years and still going strong.
