Ok I know there are several several threads to this problem. I've searched in and out but still am just sitting and staring at the symbol getting crazier by the minute.
I did a foolish foolish thing by flashing the 3 button SPL in the wrong way.. I kept the re-partition button ticked and kaboom this problem arised.. and the PC does not even recognize the phone.
I'd be grateful if someone helps me or by chance posts something which I've not tried yet! and Nope I wont do the heating trick..
For the info.., my recovery/any modes are not working from phone itself only used to work from the PC using adb. Now that too doesnt work!
Thanks a lot for taking time to read and answer!
Sadly I have to say that your phone was properly bricked since it has no download mode, you cannot use Odin to reflash other firmware.
Your situation is the same as mine, 3 weeks ago, I tried to fix 3 buttons combo to enable recovery/download mode but it was failed and my phone could not start up.
Now there is only one solution to rescue your bricked phone, that is RIFF JTAG box. My phone was rescued successfully by that box.

Thanks Stephen for your reply.. Other replies please...
You have to know that if the phone can enter download mode by pressing 3 buttons combo then you can re-flash it with another firmware by using Odin, otherwise you cannot do anything to make it boot up because its boot area had been corrupted.
My phone is under warranty.. so can Samsung service centre guys do something about it?

yes, you can take it back to samsung for repairs
or you can flash it back yourself using Odin
@Allgamer.. I've tried everything I could bro.. used Odin 4.3, Odinepic1.3 but no use... and my 3 button technique is disabled in my phone Damn why does it have to happen to me when am outta my city
did you try with the usb cable plugged in?
or the battery pop in when the 3 buttons are held
or the heat trick with the hair dryer?
Yeah tried with cable plugged in and also the battery pop in..
I dont have a hair dryer with me at the moment. I mean not that I cannot borrow one, but am a bit scared to try it since it might affect the life of my phone..
Thanks for helping Allgamer bro! Appreciate it.
Hmm anyone found a way to get into download mode with 3 button mode disabled yet?
Finally gave my phone to the service center Hope they treat it well.. and hope they enable the 3 button modes ...
Hmm finally got my beast back from the service centre. And guess what they have enabled the 3 button mode for me yippee

Did they disassemble your phone? And how about the warranty?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah they had to replace a board they said... Some pba board the receipt says.. Don't know what so ever that means
Forgot to mention.. Since it was under warranty I wasn't charged a single penny
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Dont know why they had to replace the board, the problem does not concern with hardware, it's just a software issue, exactly is the boot loader was corrupted so the store that I send my phone to took only $15.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah but the thing is I did some weird things by mistake like keeping the repartition box checked while flashing etc... So might be that might have blown something off...
Anyway am happy to have my phone back with the recovery and download modes ) Doesnt matter what they changed as long as my phone keeps me busy
my captivate cannot turn on at all
NO galaxy s, NO atnt screen, NOTHING
dead like without battery (but i am sure the battery is half full cos i tried it on another phone)
computer won't recognize it when usb plugged
cannot charge at all, no charging screen
SO NO download mode, NO recovery mode
tried all those remove sim, remove sd, remove battery, turn on odin first, connect to pc, having 3 buttons (actually all possible combinations) press, power button release, everything i could found on forum...
the only thing i didn't try yet is the 301k resistor
have a fd making that for me, will try that soon
but i doubt it will work since the situation looks very bad
so my question is...
has anyone with the EXACT symptoms, able to unbrick at last?
if u r those who able to unbrick becos ur captivate was still able to turn on
please don't reply, i really really appreciate ur help
but sorry urs wasn't really "brick"
and those solutions aren't what i looking for
if you want to know what i did...
all i did was trying to flash to Cognition v2.3b6 from a stock 2.1 following the wiki
i watched it formatting, copying files, ... , and then it try to reboot
but instead of successful reboot it stay dead forever
great...
tested even with the 301k resistor now
no luck
Yeah sorry man. Looks like you got a bad phone. Time to call att
i wish, but i didn't buy it from atnt
no receipt no shxx
and i am in canada
You know you still have the manufacturer's warranty. One year. Call Samsung and they will refurb it for ya. I got mine in Canada too. No receipt required as long as you have the original barcode on your box.

I just get the same problem.
waiting for the solution too.
Have you tried a new battery?
This is my captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.
your Phone most likely not bricked.
I Actually had this same problem. I really thought my phone was bricked. I would pull the battery and put it back in and nothing but a black screen. I ended up having to go into download mode from another computer. If you do this install drivers first and try to go into download by pushing both volume up and down at the same time then plug in usb cable to computer with odin opened up.

the 301k resistor tested on my gf "still" working captivate
it works
I end up took it to some cell repair shop to fix it
they said they had to replace a chip inside
and it cost me cad$150
anyway now it's fixed
but i think i am going to sell it since i don't have much faith in it anymore
i can't keep a phone that i can't flash it just becos it might never boot again
to those who have the same problem
GOOD LUCK
Doesn't it really work with the JIG?
If it doesn't work, I would not try.
If I just give the phone back to the ATT to fix it or change another one, how much should I pay?
thanks.

Can anyone confirm if the method described in the video below will work to unbrick a totally hard bricked samsung captivate?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I am planning to flash gingerbread bootloaders on my froyo to move to a gingerbread ROM. If something goes wrong I should be able to revive it myself. Also, can someone let me know if the usb jig sold by mobiletechvideos help in unbricking a hard bricked captivate. Thanks for all the help.
from Continuum V4 on matted blue theme using XDA premium app
No, jigs are for "soft bricks" for actual bricks you need the more advanced jtag debricking, if your on mobile tech you'll see he offers that service...
The bricked phone shown in the video in the OP : is it a soft bricked one or hard bricked? Any brick expert out there who can help me?
from Continuum V4 on matted blue theme using XDA premium app
The one in the video is "soft bricked" which is why the jig works.
If the phone shows any signs of life at all but doesn't actually boot it's referred to as a soft brick. (incorrectly I might add)
The one and only true brick a "hard brick" is when no matter what, the phone does absolutely nothing. It has the same function as a brick, hence the term.

a real brick, what you are calling a hard-brick is literally that.....it does NOTHING, wont power on, wont charge, wont do ANYTHING
i really hate the term 'soft-brick' although i have been known to use it from time to time, but you guys are tossing that word around not really knowing what it means
a brick is a brick... a paperweight, doesnt do anything at all
a JTAG should be able to bring back a brick
a jig is only useful for a phone that doesnt boot properly and plugging in USB while holding down vol up+down doesnt do anything.

not quite ... mobiletech offers it for $50. how much is a new phone out of contract? or even through insurance? atleast double that if not more...
you could lie your ass off and try with a warranty replacement. "i have no idea what happened, tried the kies update and now it wont come on at all" something to that effect.

That was with a contract though. They are considerably higher when you buy them outright. This goes for ALL phones.

Im a expert modder with a very hard bricked cappy. I made a simple mistake by loading the Continuum V5 with boothloaders (no probs) then trying to install the 3-button fix. Destroyed my sbl and now its so far gone. I orderd a new one on Ebay along with a Nexus S i9020A (At&t bands) to play with.
So as a friendly reminder for everyone, make sure your primary and secondary bootloaders always match or get ready to build brick houses.

Right before the update to 2.3.3 lol! I was trying to restore some old stuff and I guess I selected a 2.1 back up and restored everything (including bootloaders I assume) and now... hard brick. Guess ill see what I can do at ATT.
buttons, usb, nothing makes it say anything. I've had soft bricks before but this is total hard brick.
Update: Somehow even though the power didn't do anything, and plugging in the usb would do nothing (not even battery icon)... after trying multiple times I was able to get download mode thankfully. I guess I was less-softer-bricked lol! And the battery was over 70% before it was "bricked"

Co zrobiles ze masz brick???
Wife and I got a pair of Vivids in June of 2012, mine is rooted, has CM10 on it, her's is 100% bone stock.
Since this morning, it will not boot. When you go to turn it on, the screen's backlight comes on for 2-3 seconds, then off for a second, and a quick blink of the backlight and nothing. Then it starts a quick (.25-.50 second long) vibrate every 19 seconds. I've tried the battery from mine, same deal.
I'm not eligible for upgrade until June 2014, so if anyone has an ideas on what could be wrong or how to fix it, I'd greatly appreciate it.
If anything, I'd like to be able to get the data off it... pics and videos... for some reason she had no SD card in here and dropbox filled up back in April. Wish she'd told me that happened.
Thanks!
Apparently Vivid charging ports are fragile. Possible that hers has a short? Broken piece lodged in there causing the power to be wonky? I'd take a look with a good magnifying glass. Replacement part on eBay for about $6 if it is broken.

I'll see what I can find out. The kids have a couple of those toy microscope things, just need to get a battery so the light will work.
I plugged it into the computer without the battery and Windows wanted to install some driver qhsusb_dload? but googling that makes me think the phone is bricked in some way, which is odd because I never messed with hers.

Is there a way to definitively determine this? I'd hate to pay someone for this, just to find out it wasn't the problem.
Also, will this retain the data on the phone? I'm really aggravated at myself for not realizing there wasn't a MicroSD card in there, and more aggravated at my wife for not noticing the "Hey dropbox is full" notifications on the phone since APRIL. She's aggravated because all the pics and the video of the kids since April could potentially be gone. Good times for all.
Thanks!

The very same thing happened to mine mid summer. Here is the story from my experience. Sent to HTC for repair. They would NOT give an estimate up front. They wanted $210 to repair it. Told them no. Sent it for JTAG service. RIFF box could not talk to it. Replaced the phone.
I would send it for JTAG service. Especially if it is still showing some signs of life. Look on EBAY for jtag servive by nto1566. $25 if he can fix it. Money refunded if he can't. All you are out is postage.

Boot on recovery?
Hello friend!
I want to ask if you tried to charge the phone until green LED in upper left corner?, Then if you tried to put it into boot mode by pressing volume down and then press on? if you can load into boot mode, which is a white screen, you can scroll with the volume key down to "Factory Reset" and pressing the button on. Maybe the phone is restarted but surely erase all data are stored.
If you decide to JATG, the same will happen
Decisions, I hope you serve what I recommend, if so please let me know in the post, OK
If you plug it in to charge it either does nothing, or the orange "charging" light will come on for a few seconds and go out.
