TetherGPS finally updated to work with ICS - Nook Color General

The dev of TetherGPS has finally release an update to fix FC on ICS/CM9 devices.
I've waited a long time for this. Now I can use my Nook in the car as a Navigation device!
Go to Android Market to get update.

Just went to the market and read about it. Actually looking for Bluetooth GPS myself. This one does look like a cool app, tho

My awesome gps setup is the following on a CM7.2 Mirage KANG NC:
GPS Receiver: Tom Tom Mkii (got for a lot cheaper, I think it was about 8 bucks).
Android APPs: Bluetooth GPS
Sygic GPS Navigation
This setup works awesome it has been very reliable so far, the receiver takes very little time to find the satelites. My in car setup is super cheap but it works, I use velcro with an old NC case to stick it to the windshield.

cool setup...I haven't tried Sygic yet. Currently usiing Google Map and sometimes switch to Waze for the fun factor. How does Sygic compare to the other two navigation software? I see that it offers offline map data, which is a plus since I'm on limited Data plan.

Yeah the offline maps is a plus for me since I don't have a smartphone to tether 3G or 4G. For me it has worked pretty good, the POIs aren't all there, but I'm in Puerto Rico. There are a couple of other GPS apps that are supposedly good, like Copilot (I tried this one but the map for Puerto Rico was incomplete). The other thing is that Sygic uses google to search for POIs too if you have internet connection, so for your it might be a good choice since it will only use very little data searching for stuff, and you would have an offline map.

I would love to see a walkthrough on how to use the nook as a car gps.
My iPhone just seems tiny after i use my nook for a while.

Step 1: buy nook color
Step 2: wait a month for cyanogenmod to implement bluetooth in CM
Step 3: try to get a windows mobile 6 phone to send the GPS data via bluetooth for a month or so, pull out half of hair.
Step 4: try to get a symbian OS phone to send the GPS data via bluetooth for a month or so, pull out other half of hair.
Step 5: before committing suicide, just bite the bullet & buy first AndroidOS phone. Discover that Android on a phone is amazing. Discover that most Android phone hardware sucks.
Step 6: buy four more AndroidOS phones, discover huge horrible unfixable hardware design issues with each, discover bank account drained.
Step 7: find exactly one android phone with only one hardware issue (wifi range sucks), but otherwise is perfect (Droid RAZR) WE WILL NOT DISCUSS LOCKED BOOTLOADER ISSUE, THIS IS NOT A HARWARE PROBLEM. AHHHHH!!
Step 8: After having no money left, having spent it all on bad android phones, decide that the four dollars or whatever TetherGPS costs is too expensive.
Step 9: Suddenly remember the reason there is no money left, was to try to get GPS to work on the Nook Color
Step 10: Spend the four dollars, install TetherGPS on both phone and Nook, it just works (TM). Use whatever GPS software you please, there is plenty to choose from.

^^^ although funny, it's not all that difficult to get NC as a GPS device.
1. Your Android phone must be rooted. And it must support Infrastructure Mode tethering. I've had success with CM7 and Miui based roms.
2. Download and install Android-Wifi-Tether v. 3.1 beta 11. Google it you will find it. Once you have it installed test to make sure you can successfully tether.
3. Buy and install TetherGps both on phone and NookColor.
4. Start Tethergps as server on phone. The icon will turn blue when it has good gps lock.
5. Start tethergps as client on NookColor. Again icon will turn blue once gps is located.
6. Open your fav navigation app (Google maps is very good) you should see a blue dot at your current location.
This has been my setup for awhile now. Works great!

Navigation without data?

Are there any apps that load full maps onto my gtab so I don't need to have a data connection to use my bt gps for navigation? As it is now, I believe Google navigation requires either wifi or tethering to work...
Co-pilot in market.
or you can find a version of motonav (basically igo 8.x) and maps from mobilism.org -- best 3d nav software out there that only requires gps, no data. map sets are ~1-2gb and you can get every single state and pretty much any country in the world now (teleatlas/navteq, mixed or whatever).
sort of tough for newbies to get really into customization, but i was huge into this on my past 2 mio devices, so if you need a hand drop me a line on here, no prob.
Thanks. I just dl'd co-pilot, but it says my trial is over, even though I entered my market order id.
I'll try motonav on my other machine and compare.

I use Co-Pilot. It is in the market, and if you want it for here in the good old USA it only costs $4.99..
Not as refined as a Garmin but it works. There is also NDrive. More expensive, more refined, I have never used it though..

I went round and round with Co-Pilot about that. I had it on my phone and had de-activated it but it would not activate on my G tablet. They sent me a link to download directly from them. It worked with my registration info after that.
How hard would it be to get Google navigation setup with an external GPS unit? I'll probably be picking up a GTablet soon, and am wondering how hard it would be to setup it as a navigator. Could it be done (if so, how easily) by hooking it up with a GPS unit? (Yea, it already does what I want the tablet to do, but its 3+ years old and slooooow to run haha). That or I could use the GPS on my phone once I get it running (HTC Vogue).

It is not hard to make GPS work with an external unit. Using Google Navigation though requires an internet connection since Google does not store the maps on your device. So you can use an external GPS receiver, and tether your phone for data. Or, there are ways to use the GPS in your phone and tether too. I have not tried it but hear it can be done.
BTW, I still have an ancient HTC Vogue that I run Android on too...

Yeah, my vogue has a slow data connection so I haven't bothered with any data-intense apps obviously like Google Nav. Guess I would need to get a different program on the Tab to hook up with the GPS unit itself. Any suggestions (preferable free ones haha?)

I would prefer to use Google nav because it works really well. The Vogue does not have wifi though and I have not found a way to tether it using bluetooth. So I use a program called Co-Pilot. It is only $4.99 in the market for the US version but it can be a pain to get activated on the G tablet. ALK who makes the program sent me a link to a non market version that did install with my registration info. It works ok, but not as well as Google nav. Seems to be missing plenty of addresses that are not new and should be there. They do have a way to let them know what is missing but I don't know how often they update.

Yes. I use CoPilot USA,$4.99 from the Market. You can download any or all US State maps for offline use. I use my DroidX as my BT receiver and it works like a charm. . . . I, too had trouble with activation. Had to send an email & call support Toni get it resolved.

No Joy with CoPilot
I purchased CoPilot through the Google Market place ($4.99 for USA) but no joy in installing it. Same 703 errors. Finally got through to someone in tech support (emails went unanswered) but their advice (basically wipe program and start again while downloading the maps separately onto my PC and then into the g-tablet) still resulted in errors. Since the holiday is coming up, this will probably not get solved in time for next weeks vacation/test run.
Oh well. For five bucks I wasn't expecting a lot and my MIO unit is still operational. Just hoping for some text to speech voice turns from my g-tablet. I will poke again after the holidays. Seems like a combination of the date not resetting or hard coded in the downloaded apk or authentification not getting out (since it is a wifi only machine; the program is expecting the telephone).
Unless anyone has any other suggestions?
success install after rom uprade
I installed latest ROM upgrade (3.1.1) and was able to get co-pilot installed and working. Combination of wiping user data and alk receiving gapps sales information.
No luck with John or Lisa. Anyone with hints for getting the voice portion working.

http://www.appbrain.com/app/bluetooth-gps-provider/de.mobilej.btgps if you're using the new build/kernel with bluetooth working.
Otherwise, not going to work.
I have been able to successfully pair my NC with a Global Sat 352 bluetooth GPS receiver using CM nightly 17 and BlueGPS4droid. It works in Google Maps but the range is horrible, around 12 inches.
I have a really stupid question about this.
I don't see how it will work with just GPS.
I understand that GPS will give you location, but what about data for getting the maps?
When I'm using google maps on my blackberry or my wife's Iphone, it needs to download the map via data aside from just providing location.
Does the GPS do that as well?
Thanks for your patience.

You will need data connection (tethered to another phone if you are on the road) to use Google maps(navigation). There are a few programs (Navigon and Co Pilot Live are two I found)that install all the map data that they use to your SD Card so you don't need a data connection.
you need an external bluetooth gps receiver. Install the Program "Bluetooth GPS" to your nook and use it to connect the bluetooth GPS Receiver.
They are roughly $50+
It needs to be NMEA compatible.

The latest version of Google Maps will download and cache your route if you plan it in advance while on a WiFi connection, however, I haven't had a lot of success retrieving that cache once I get on the road...and usually end up re-downloading the map over my data connection.
So the answer is: You PROBABLY DO NEED a data plan. Unless you buy map software that downloads all the maps locally, there are a few Apps in the market.
There's a Gmap cacher program that I use on my netbook.
Perhaps something similar (or another gps program with prebuilt maps) for the nook?
(I think it's absolutely ridiculous to require a data connection for any program like this, it can be done preloaded at home. I also despise requirements of cell phone data plans based on this premise.......)
I know this is a little off topic but there's an app that allows you to share your phones gps over wifi.
You install the host on your phone and the client is installed on your book.
I am going to search for it.....

I'm looking at getting one of these guys from DealExtreme. The reviews are all pretty positive about the battery life, the speed, and it's ability to lock on to many satellites reliably.
I'm really close to pulling the trigger on one.
Working OK for me with my BT GPT-600 SiRF Star III GPS.
Range is about 3 feet, so that knida sucks, but same as all the rest of the BT range so far.
Same as this one:

Since I have an HTC EVO, I think I will still use the tetherGPS, so I can get the data along with it.
Is there anything like tetherGPS for other phone OSes (Blackberry, Windows Mobile, iOS)? I have a BB at the moment; they suck, but it does have a functional GPS chip.
thanks for the links guys. i will check them out

(Q) Gps on Wifi only 7

I have 2.2.2 stock n here and it has gps in the settngs but when ve been outside ve opened my navigation and the 7 never stops looking for a gps signal. My 5 s n att and thus has 3g. Gps woks great on it.
I did do the tweak of removimg the phone and telephony.apk. not sure f that wouldve messed anything up.

Ok, I did a little test this morning. I have the same DS7 wifi as you with phone.apk and telephony.apk removed and no other mod, running stock 2.2.2.
I was able to get a GPS signal. I used Google's Navigation app, it prompted me to install a text to speech app, which I did and the result was awesome! I now have a glorified GPS with text to speech for free. I did a test run and it guided me to my office without any problem. The GPS signal was picked up as soon as I got out of my house and stayed connected all the way to final destination, about 10 miles drive distance.
The only little caveat is that you need to have a constant connection to the internet so that Google map is downloaded as you drive. I was able to do this with a personal wifi hotspot.
I hope this answered your question. Blessings!!!

Actually, Google Maps app can now cache your directions so you can still use the GPS when you have no signal. There's also limited offline mode right now, with full offline mode coming soon.
I have heard that Google Maps can now cached maps, but I do not see this option in their Navigation app. The Navigation app does say that if you loose connection, it will continue to guide you as long as you don't deviate from the original route. Is this what they mean by map caching???

Actually you can do minor deviations and it will correct. I've purposely tried it out and it will recalculate for minor changes without data connection. For those looking to save maps is done in the mapping app and it's turned on under settings, Labs. It will save an area 10 miles around the center point.
These saved maps only work for maps. They will not work for navigation without a wifi or 3g data source. The full off line use is coming.

GPS? What's the point?

So I was just thinking it seems really strange that our device would have gps without a network connection. I don't have a problem with being wifi only but if I'm using wifi I'm usually at home or at work or somewhere that i won't really be going anywhere. As in, I feel like the most useful part of the gps is always for navigation but the only use of gps I can think of with only wifi is for location based search results. I so I was just wondering everyone's thoughts, cuz to me it seems sort of unnecessary

offline maps. GPS works without a connection.
and, way better location based services.

I have not loaded it yet on the Nexus 7 but I have used Navagon from the play store. It turns the tab into a 7 inch GPS unit.
GPS features (Offline Google Maps, fully downloaded GPS software), being able to "Check In" at different locations, whatever they opt for. As a "Dev" unit of sorts, I find GPS to be critical.
GPS to test GPS based applications, since this is a Nexus device

The only trouble I have with offline maps is that it still obviously doesn't work with navigation. But one question though with offline maps, can you save a map with a navigation route on it?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I tether my Nexus 7 to my Sprint phone (rooted CM9). It is nice to not have to tether GPS through Bluetooth. In my car the Nexus 7 gets mounted and serves up the torque app, connects my BT obd2 sensor, and uses its own GPS.
What's the point of a GPS? Easy, it's a sensor so the device knows where you are at. I use my Nexus all over the place and it's always online tethered to my phone. It's way smarter since it knows where it's at.
Better question would be, what's that Barometer doing in my Galaxy Nexus....

The Galaxy Note has one too.
The Kindle Fire didn't have one... and it was very limiting for what I wanted to use it for. My hotspot didn't provide GPS data.
In a mobile setting when you have a 3G/4G hotspot, having a device with a GPS allows a lot of detail data collection which requires location info (like weather data). The hotspot allows transmission of the data to a server for processing and receipt of critical data (like Doppler radar data) to know where you are and where its at.
One of the reasons why I was waiting for the Nexus 7 as soon as I heard it has both GPS and the other location tools.
No aGPS... but once you are tracking that doesn't matter.
Sygic works great offline everywhere I go.

Navigation apps like Copilot store all of the maps and poi's on the device. No network connection necessary and it will automatically route you to any destination that your map set covers.

It's also nice to have the GPS so when you show it to your friends with Iphones and Ipads, you can demonstrate the Navigation function that they still don't have.
"Google, Navigate to Staples in Woodland Hills California so my friend can pick up a Nexus 7"
The point is that the kindle fire doesn't have it. That really is the point i think.

Xoom had one too, it's something that a bit ahead of it's time. Think 'crowd sourced' weather apps.
This thread is akin to the whole "why does the Galaxy Nexus have a barometer in it" threads that popped up after it came out.
Though, as many have said before, it primarily is for use in offline maps. If you start navigation and leave, it should keep those directions (though it won't recalculate any new ones) in memory and running even without an internet connection.
GPS is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from Navigation. Navigation requires a GPS. Using a GPS does not require Navigation.
So stop saying "GPS" when you mean "Navigation", for the love of god.
So what's a GPS in a wifi-only device useful for?
Using in any one of dozens of apps that can cache map data
Recording paths or traces for recreation, hiking, biking, whatever
Geocaching or any other game/activity needing precise location data
Using one of several OFFLINE Navigation apps (CoPilot Live, Sygic, Navigon, etc)
There are more, I'm bored with this...
All that being said, it's awesome that it has it, but yeah most people can turn off that radio most of the time to save battery.

GPS is not running and uses no battery unless actively in use.
What about those that tether? It might not be big in the US because of carrier blocking bit plenty of people tether to mobiles - why pay for an additional contract when your phone has unlimited data?
Once coupled together the 7 becomes its own device, looks great with Google navigation and obviously Google Notes works as it should!

Waze Beta Feedback/Discussion

Not an official part of the beta...but I've been installing and using the betas via apkmirror. I use the Sony XAV-AX100 for android auto on it's latest firmware (1.02.06 as of this writing). Phone is a Nexus 6P running 7.1.2. Started with the v4.24.0.113 beta....it worked...albeit with frequent crashes/restarts. It seemed VERY beta. Sometimes it didn't audibly report hazards/police, etc. The "OK Google" style voice recognition worked fine in the app....e.g if I had Waze selected for Nav, a "Navigate to DESTINATION" responded with "OK, handing that to Waze..." and then the destination came up fine in Waze.
I tried this on a few long trips, but ultimately the frequent crashes (sometimes at critical navigation points) were too much, so I largely reverted back to Google Maps.
I am now on v4.26.0.902. It is overall MUCH more stable than the 113 beta, however, all of the OK Google voice recognition defaults to Google Maps...e.g. "Navigate to DESTINATION" switches you to Google Maps by default, even if you are in Waze when you do it...even when tapping the microphone in the waze search box. I really hope that isn't going to be the case in the release version of this when it comes out. It's kind of a deal breaker....you really need that ability to choose a new navigation destination on the fly with voice commands as you can do in GM.
Overall Feedback for both versions so far:
1. I miss the speed/speed limit overlay terribly. I know they are dealing with a screen real estate issue here...but I'd really like to see this added back in.
2. No ability to send ETA in the AA UX. Not really a deal breaker for me....I found this functionality spotty at best in the release versions of Waze.
3. The Map detail could be better. I know the head unit has lower resolution than my phone, but Google Maps looks much better on it.
4. I wish the dark theme/dark map would work on AA. If I switch the lights on, it goes to dark, but I'd like the ability to have this on all the time. The dark map seems to look better on the head unit's screen.
I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others so far.....
You know, I just don't understand the lack of talk in this forum about Waze Beta. I keep coming here and looking and this is really the only thing about it.
1. Speed limit overlay is coming back, they talked about it when the new version came out last week.
2. Agreed. It should prompt you via voice after you hit a Send ETA button on who you want to send it to.
3. Agreed. I am a Geographer/GIS Specialist by trade, so I know maps, this small of font on the screen when driving is unacceptable. The detail is also very poor.
4. You DO know you can set your Android Auto to always be Night Mode right? I prefer it that way.

Gives you the dark map all the time. Dark Google Play Music is better too.

I did not know that! Thanks for the tip!
I've got 905 installed now but the "Navigate to DESTINATION" via voice switching you to Google Maps by default issue persists, unfortunately. 113 didn't do that. I really hope they restore that so that it uses your last used navigation app, similar to how music works.

905? Is that a new version that is AA capable?
We should use this thread, or maybe start a new one to notify XDA folks that do stumble in here when there's a new AA compatible beta. I've had to find out on *shudder* Reddit.
Installed 4.27.0.0 Beta on Friday. http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/waze/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation-4-27-0-0-release/
I can confirm this version works with AA. Seems very stable, they fixed the "Navigate to DESTINATION" issue as well. Still no Speedometer. It may be because I've switched to always on night mode, but the map seems to look a little better than it did. I think they still need work with the fonts, etc. but this looks promising.
How does waze download map? I use it in car without Internet.
Last time i used it, i send Internet from phone to find the destination. Then i stoped Internet and working fine.
Last time i was in a trip, i started waze again, without Internet and without settings an adress. It was working but after a few minutes it didn't have map anyone. It just showing black for map..
Probably if i started Internet again it would show map. The program was working. It did work navigation but without map..
So i think when you search an andress, it download the map to go there. So even without Internet it will work. But if you dont follow the navigation and go to some other place, it wont have the map from the other place..

The purpose of this thread is for discussion of the Waze Beta on Android Auto. Perhaps you should ask your question in the general Waze forum: https://www.waze.com/forum/ With a general google search, I found this relevent thread here: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=657&t=67879#p682703
Installed 4.27.0.1 beta. Working fine with AA. I don't see any feature updates...seems to be a bug fix release.

Hey there. I am having trouble with android auto. I have the same head unit as you as well as the same phone. I have tried many times to get android auto running with my phone on the head unit and I always get a message about "android auto will resume when you are parked". The head unit does not give this message when connected to a samsung phone or an i-Phone (apple car play). This error only pops up with my device, Nexus 6P so I am assuming it was wired correctly by the installer. Can you PLEASE let me know what ROM you are on (including the build date) and possibly what cord you are using to connect to the provided USB extension cable? I have yet to get this head unit to work with my Nexus 6P and I have tried a different ROMs, settings, reboots etc. Please help.

I'm on the stock ROM....7.1.2 Build No: N2G470. The cord is just a generic USB-A to USB-C cord I bought at Fry's Electronics. FYI...I installed the head unit myself, and I think I may have had that issue initially. What I did to resolve it was ground the parking brake wire. This allows you to watch video on the head unit as well, if you have a USB stick with media on it (although I never do that).
Hope that helps....

Thanks skylaneffz. I am going to get the parking break wire grounded tomorrow. Debating if I want to just return to stock now and if everything works tomorrow, I can try a custom rom again later. Kinda annoying that I can get my girlfriends I-phone to work with the head unit and not my own. Currently running pure nexus 6/12 with no luck. Thanks again for your advice. Getting waze to work will be the next step once android auto is up and running.

I'd see if grounding the brake wire works first if I were you. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through. I'm on the stock ROM because my "Flashaholic" days are over

Thanks,
I may revert to stock regardless. I only really use a custom rom because they tended to be considerably better than stock (at least initially with battery life etc). I have not been on a stock rom in so long I have no idea how they compare to customs now. Since i have flashed so many times now trying to get this to work, and I had no guarantee any flash would prove fruitful, my phone is not even completely set up. LOL. So may as well give stock a spin. Regardless, thank you so very much. I was about to give up hope getting android auto to work with my phone and head unit. Especially since the good people of Sony have told me twice the head unit does NOTwork with 6P (granted they also told me twice it did). Gotta love their customer service.
Apparently the release version is out now:
https://www.blog.google/products/android/waze-android-auto-here/
The release version seems to be the same as the last beta: 4.27.0.1
Android Auto now working with regular Waze release!
Yeah, but missing lane assist and no speeding limits is really annoying.
And the calculated arrival time is on Google maps much better than Waze. Only thing what is very cool are the speed traps in waze.
Waze has got wrong routing to me and is not a good navigation system. And i don´t like the social blabla with points and that stuff...
Maps and TomTom are much better.

I think there's a lot more stuff in ways that's a cool than that. Being able to go in and edit the map and add things or remove things and adjust them is fantastic. I do a fair amount of editing when I have time. Also the other reporting has turned out to be extremely important for me and has kept me from running into rather large roadkill and other trash items on the road from people towing trucks down to Mexico here in New Mexico.

You may want to check your ways settings and make sure that they are set correctly for you. You can also do editing in your area to adjust the way that routing happens and it'll work better.
