[Q] Can you use it with a single hand ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are many debates out there, whether you can use Galaxy Note with single hand or not. Many people disagree whether Galaxy Note is a phone or a tablet...
For me it is just a large phone. I call it a large PHONE because I can use it with single hand. I can reach all four corners while holding the device in one hand.
Can you do that ?

I can't but I have small hands.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

what you can do one handed depends on a few factors : how big your hands are, what app are you using, and how safe you feel like being.
How i use my phone at home is far different than how i use my phone when i am not, because there is far less of a chance i might get bumped or something and drop the phone. would you actually use your phone the way you do in your video if you were walking around?

I can use it with one hand, but I have large hands.

I never thought about it this way, but I have to admit that it really depends on the situation. I would definitely avoid using it with one hand while walking.

It is different kind of device. You use it in different ways. I use my note one handed all the time. Other times, I use two, other times use the stylus, often use via voice (way underrated, the voice recognition is the best on any phone). Every day I walk my dogs, two large ones, with my note in one hand and the two leashes in the other. Works fine, never come close to dropping it. Again this is a unique device, you use it differently and in a way with much much less frustration than a regular smartphone. It is a game changer.

I use my second hand only when i text someone, otherwise one hand all the time(big hands)

I could force myself to reach all corners with one hand, but it doesn't feel safe. I use two hands whenever I can

use "flygrip" and make life much easier with one handed use, without the fear of dropping it ever, no matter where you bump !!!

Same as me.

I consider myself having large hands, but I can only barely use Note with one hand and have to use two hands if I try to type anything.

Many times the back button is pressed when using one hand...

two hands. one to hold. one with S-pen

For checking mail, twitter, facebook and news when I'm on the way I can use one hand. And I have normal size hands.
When writing a message I always did use my two tumbs, also did that with a small device.

I have pretty large hands, and I find it is fine with one hand. I find I 'rest' the phone on my fingers and use my thumb. Points to note:
It does not feel as secure as a full grasp of the phone. When I do that I cannot use the screen.
This is much easier when I use a bottom-flip case as I can 'hold' the cover with my fingers.
I cannot reach the far top corner of the screen like this.
I sometimes press the 'back' key. I guess lefties would press the menu key.
To do anything half-way complex I have to use both hands.
If anyone can show me how to hold a naked Note so that you can access the whole screen I'd be grateful!

People ask me this all the time when the see me with the phone...i mean i'm a pretty big guy...6'2 big hands it is plausible for me to do it...and i do from time to time but its feels better to two-hand the phone...i don't know if anyone else gets that same vibe but i do

I frequently text and browse with one hand, but the grip is definitely looser than holding iphone.

Two slits underneath the screen

Hey, well after my other topic, I questioned another branch of the store I bought my phone from about the quality of the packaging my phone came in and that I let them know I wasn't terribly happy with it. They exchanged it no questions ask, and my new Incredible S came perfectly sealed in the box. It feels a lot more well built than the other one, so am presuming the other phone wasn't up to scratch!
Anyway, because am a perfectionist, I looked at my phone and noticed a 'slit' type thing between the lip surrounding the screen, and the screen, towards the right of the screen. I thought it was just 'one of those things' with the build, but then noticed one in the same place towards the left. So am wondering what are they?
You probably won't be able to see them lol, the are VERY hard to see, but am guessing they're part of the phone cuz, as I said, there's two exactly the same size and in the same position.
Confused. Take picture. Upload here.
Yup, they are part of the phone.

I'll try to, but they're difficult to see unless looking closely.
Whilst am here, instead of starting a new thread, just a question about the durability of the phone.
I was doing my coursework (I left it late) I was a but hasty in my movements and knocked my Incredible S off the arm of the chair, it fell and hit me external keyboard, and then on to the carpet. I checked it and see no damage and everything works, so am guessing the keyboard cushioned the blow a bit even though it make a horrible clank, as did the carpet.
How durable are these phones? Would a knock like I've described damage it? Am a bit paranoid about my phone, aha.

How does the Note feel as a phone?

As this is I think a smaller tablet, I'd like to know how you guys feel about using the Note as a phone.
Does it feel natural or a bit strange & awkward?

It's perfectly fine for me. The only downside is people asking to look at it, and saying: "I gotta get me one of these!" But you get used to it

It's just a phone, so I hold it to my ear. But you could do both, I guess. The phone is very large, and it is a little awkward the first few days, but now it feels great. The screen size is really sweet. I have to admit I've nearly dropped it once already.. It's kind of unwieldy sometimes. I'm always super careful, I've never dropped my HTC HD2 (4,3 inch) even once, in over two years time, and I've never dropped my classic iPod which I've been using for over 7 years or so. But this phone is so big, I've nearly dropped it in just a few weeks. I'll have to be extra careful with my Note. But other then me being scared of dropping it, the size is fine. It's great, actually. In tablet mode at 213 DPI, you can fit an entire a4 sheet on it in portrait mode, and still be able to read the text!
Seexxxxxyyyy!
No seriously! Feels normal, completely normal! Have been using it for one and a half months now and now when I use other phones, they all feel TOO small. Even the HTC One X, I tried it today, felt too small.
And yes, I am waiting for the 5.5 or 5.7 inch version. 6 inch.. Why not!? My first worry before getting note was the size, after a few days using it, it's the best thing about it!
Im not ashamed of pulling the big boy outta my pocket and answer a call!
It feels amazing! I'm so glad I dumped my iphone 4s for galaxy note! I couldn't be happier about the decision. All those years what a waste... [email protected]#k apple and genius bar asshats!
I LOVE MY GALAXY NOTE!!!!!
There's no shame involved! I have the flip it case which replaces the battery back with flip screen cover attached - protects really well adds virtually no bulk at all and you can use the phone with the case closed as it has earpiece cut out. After a day the phone size really didn't bother me - there's such a big advertising push in UK at the mo a lot more people know what it is rather than a month ago. Can be a conversation starter and a simple play of the Samsung demo vid blows most people away with first experience of Samoled. I honestly believe we'll see even bigger phones (well maybe different aspect ratio) in the future.
Of course if you had to have the case open to use the phone...

Awkward at first, second nature after a few weeks in my case.
Only problem still present is that I'm unable to dial one handed, but having my frequently dialed numbers as shortcuts on one of my panels is a good way and quicker way of dialing.
Cheers

Not bad. For long periods of talk, i use a Bluetooth ear phone
I have used BT headsets for years, and tend to use one with the Note while on the move. If I am with people I tend to turn it off, and then I use the Note as a 'normal' phone.
I find it quite normal now after 4 months. Nobody else seems to bother about it, but I am a large bloke, 1.93m. I too get the amazed requests to see it, but generally when I use it as a tablet. At least two people have bought one based on seeing mine.
Feel ok for me. I using a bookcase type of flip casing. Initially, need some getting use to flip open the cover and slide to answer the call. Still a two hand operation when call come in when the cover is closed and latched.
As a phone, it never fails to amaze me that the Iphone looks terribly a miniscule/midget device than my Note.
As a phone and a tablet, it surely blows away the Iphone, no contest at all.
As when taking calls, I don't feel awkward holding it on my ear as my ear is actually also a bit large also (than a regular person's ear), , so the Note fits perfectly to the tee.

Samsung galaxy note as a NOTEBOOK?

Hey guys, I know turning your cellphone as an actual notebook might seem like a very stupid idea but I seen your sketches and they were all pretty well done that I'm assuming the S-pen really does have the ability to work as a real pen.
THE QUESTION:
Have you ever thought of using (or used) your note as an actual notebook, if so, how is it?
Please feel free to post pictures of your handwriting, also I have no intention of using the handwriting recognition (my handwriting is messy and that is the only way I would want it), I just think the galaxy note would serve as a mini notebook for my psychology classes that only requires me to take minimal notes.
Also, If you'd tell me to search reviews or whatnot..like the other thread had said, I think the reason why reviewers take the Note negatively is because they haven't spent much time with it. So I would prefer asking the real users..

I regularly use the Note to take notes when I attend meetings or to randomly jot down ideas or info that I receive on the go, and I find it is about ideal for the job. Huge amounts of writing at a time may be a different story
One typical use is noting down the details of animals that I insure in the field. I do not have to carry a separate note book, and all the info is right to hand whenever I need it.
Like you, I have a really messy hand, and I find that my screen protector's slightly matte texture provides much better feel than does the plain glass screen.
My only problem is that I often accidentally rest my wrist on the back button, thus closing the note while I am in the process of writing. Holding your wrist up for long periods can be painful (probably one of the only advantages of a paper notebook). If there were some way to de-activate the back button in S-Memo or S-Note, I would be absolutely set.

I think there's an app that has disabled the back button. But in ICS it saves before exiting so you don't lose anything.
Thanks guys, I've decided to get this phone rather than the s3. I have more use for this one. =)

Nexus 7 Ergonomics

I just got my Nexus 7 and I am NOT liking the ergonomics. I find it difficult to hold on the sides. I'm coming from a Nook Color which is easy to grip anywhere with one hand. If the edges were not as round on the back, I don't I think I would have such a problem. Also I had expected the "rubber" back to have better grip. I don't know if these are deal breakers for me just yet. Grip or holdability from the bottom is pretty good; I perhaps could get use to it. Everything else is amazing including build quality, except the usb cable is too short at 3 feet; I wouldn't use it, except charging is too slow without it. What's going to help with the ergonomics, a skin or case?
I think I'll add a poll on how well others like the ergonomics.
We've got some baby hands over here....just kidding, but I see what you're getting at. I actually like it for two hand usage more so than one handed. I however really like the feel of the tablet. It just feels solid and premium.

Saw it on American family Phil was using it on his iPad. I might just buy a case and fashion it on there myself

I'd say they could be better. The first thing I noticed was that I prefer portrait over landscape a lot. The home button is too far away from either of my hands in landscape making it awkward to press. It's also hard to type in landscape since it takes a lot of reach to hit the keys near the middle. Even the sleep button seems a little awkward to press. I have to take my hand totally off the tablet to get to it. I feel I might like it more once I get my case since I'm overly cautious about getting smudges on the bezel right now.
i prefer the homescreen portrait layout. The only thing that i can point my finger on is the tablet wants to be picked up due to the position of the sleep/wake button. Sometimes i prefer to just turn it on while its on the desk but that doesn't seem like an option anymore, also they could have made the screen slightly longer on top and bottom, but when putting it into landscape mode you can see the thinking
Don't get me wrong...I love the N7 but a few things I find difficult coming from the Nook.
every time I try to turn the volume up I end up turning the screen off....
90% of the time that i pick it up I have it upside down. I never had this problem with the Nook thanks to the little ring/hook.
I agree it's slightly awkward to hold, but maybe it's just because I'm being very reserved with my new baby. Gotta keep her clean for a little while at least...

Home button durability

Hey everyone. Does anyone know how durable the home button is? Like how much force would it take it break it? Is it safe to sit on or press really hard? If you press it as hard as you can with your thumb can you break it..ect. I'm wondering what it can take. I sat on my home button yesterday and worried I may have damaged it.
Does the home button work? If yes: ok
Okay, that last comment was completely out of line. He was asking a simple question, expecting a simple answer.
So, to answer the question, it would really depend on what you use as a home button. On my phone, the home button is on-screen, on my HUAWEI m865c, the home button is a touchscreen button, and on my LG optimus prime, it's an actual physical button. So, what is it?
Sent from my HTC Desire 510 using XDA Free mobile app
Its the actual Samsung physical home button. I ask because I'm still in return window and I don't want it to have hidden damage inside the mechanism. Just wondering how much pressure these buttons are supposed to handle with no damage
Dude it doesn't even matter
You don't have anything better to do Bacardilimon, you have a track record for douchy responses, I am not surprised.
Here is a simple rule. Do you have anything constructive to add to a topic? If no:
then do not post.
You may have had a faulty one to begin with. Sammy home buttons arent sturdy to begin with. My gs3 I know got wonky after a slight pressure situation. For the note 4 though it is pretty good on the pressure. We can't sit here and give you values and number or what it can or cannot take. Samsung can answer those for you though.
As to reply back to the main topic, I would guess that the physical home should be treated as gingerly as the touchscreen. Most "high-end" models like the Sammy Galaxy are cheap pieces of plastic surrounding high-performance processors. Exercise awareness while using your phone without a case.
If you plan on purposely destroying your home button, you should have to just put your weight into it while pressing. Destroying stuff is fun, but not when you can't get another.

............POST RESPECTFULLY OR DO NOT POST ............EASY........
No more Trolling.........anymore will be be met with infractions.........
Now, to answering you question........ The center home button is a separate unit piece look At this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZND9Q73wjr8 fast to 3min:45 sec and watch from there.
Basically these types of buttons can withstand quite a lot of force. The only way the button will fail is if the plastic or metal tip part that actually depressives the button within its structure get damaged ... either by manufacturer's flaw, or by repeatably pushing it down several thousand times ........ the part is 12-20 bucks to buy for replacement depending where you find it being sold.
Now post respectfully, be civil, be kind ........... ~~~ oka1
My Galaxy S4's button is the same as when it came out, so it's quite durable to me. I can't imagine the quality has gone down since, so I'm sure the one on the Note 4 is fine.
+1
For what it's worth. The home button on the note 4, at least in my opinion, feels better than the Galaxy S5. Or maybe that was just my phone.
I hate the physical button - I use DK's NavBar.
