Two slits underneath the screen - HTC Incredible S

Hey, well after my other topic, I questioned another branch of the store I bought my phone from about the quality of the packaging my phone came in and that I let them know I wasn't terribly happy with it. They exchanged it no questions ask, and my new Incredible S came perfectly sealed in the box. It feels a lot more well built than the other one, so am presuming the other phone wasn't up to scratch!
Anyway, because am a perfectionist, I looked at my phone and noticed a 'slit' type thing between the lip surrounding the screen, and the screen, towards the right of the screen. I thought it was just 'one of those things' with the build, but then noticed one in the same place towards the left. So am wondering what are they?
You probably won't be able to see them lol, the are VERY hard to see, but am guessing they're part of the phone cuz, as I said, there's two exactly the same size and in the same position.

Confused. Take picture. Upload here.

Yup, they are part of the phone.

I'll try to, but they're difficult to see unless looking closely.
Whilst am here, instead of starting a new thread, just a question about the durability of the phone.
I was doing my coursework (I left it late) I was a but hasty in my movements and knocked my Incredible S off the arm of the chair, it fell and hit me external keyboard, and then on to the carpet. I checked it and see no damage and everything works, so am guessing the keyboard cushioned the blow a bit even though it make a horrible clank, as did the carpet.
How durable are these phones? Would a knock like I've described damage it? Am a bit paranoid about my phone, aha.

It's definitely more durable than an iPhone. I'm not sure if it's marketing or not, but our glass is supposed to be gorilla glass.....

Anybody else's phone creaks when squeezed?

I know, this is due to a plastic build. It seems to be due to the back case that's causing it. It doesn't happen often, but at times I can certainly feel the phone creak. Though its got me thinking, is it just my phone or does others creak in a similar matter also? I didn't really expect this from such a high end device, but eh I guess I gotta learn to live with it.
I guess I could cover it up by getting a case that encases the phone, or see if I can find another back casing.
For what its worth, mine doesn't but as you say its plastic and im sure it wont be long before mine starts. I forgot to swap my MicroSD card out of my old phone when I got the phone and now im scared to take the cover off to put it in because that battery cover is so thin and flimsy.
mine doesnt squeak also
No creaking here. I did catch one of the buttons while squeezing and it triggered the haptic feedback but no creaking. The rear panel feels flimsy when detached, but when in place the phone feels reasonably solid to me.

Maybe that's cause you're used to the Touch HD? I'm gonna make the switch from a Touch HD to the Galaxy S as well.
Seriosuly though, my Touch HD creaks only when handled in a certain way, maybe the same is true for the Galaxy S?

lol, yeah maybe
I also have a Blackberry Bold 9700 and the case for that creaks way more than any noise I can get from the Samsung.
It happens to me sometimes when I try to get a better grip
The first few times I almost **** myself thinking I broke something
Mine seems to creak when I press the top bit of the phone (just above the grill thing above the Samsung logo), and sometimes at the sides also when I pick it up. It's not that bad, but I have terrible, terrible OCD and this can bug me sometimes.
Creaking? That reminds me of the g1 lol

It certainly does. I got fed up of mine and sold it because of the non stop creaking from the bottom right corner of the screen.
i just got my SGS last week..... n its already making creaky noise when held tightly from the side..... is there a way to get a replacement???
Try tightening the small screws at the back. Turns out that the silver bezel is really loose out of the box for some units. Also, in some units, there is a small gap between the battery and the back plate. That makes it creak real bad though I doubt that is a structural error.

my left side creaks
mine does this sometimes, it doesn't bother me at all.
I get it here on the top of the phone in the middle.
Not worried about it, guess it gives it more personality
Now what I would really like, more cases so we can customize.
A matte or shinny steel back cover would be a nice addition
Anything really, to make it less iCrap 3 looking I hate people saying
it's an iCrap 3 and that I should get an iCrap 4
creaking silver bezel in the left bottom part here. I'm "glad" to see i'm not alone
Yups my SGS also creeks when I squeeze it from sides...

Mine creeks when I squeeze it too ... This is what happens when they try to make a hightech phone cheaper ... if they used a better plastic or something else (the Iphone has murano glass from Italy .. WTF? ) the phone would be to expensive and many of us couldn't buy it ..! As long as it doesn't hurt the phone I don't mind ! The solution for me was the silicone case (and make the difference if you drop the phone !)
Mine does, only around the power button though.

What about this case?

This one looks interesting. It looks like it wraps all the way around the side of the phone, and slides apart on the back to open. This might keep from having the issue of jamming the screen cover in between the slider mechanism.
Has anyone ever used this brand? I'm curious if it is worth it.

I am definitely interested in this too, I used to have a slider case for my touch pro that worked very well, but it was a side slider. I'm curious how that wrap around would mess with how you hold your phone though
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
What do they mean by the "sliding mechanism is on the back of the handset rather than the front or sides"?
Well I haven't actually seen the case in person, but I'm guessing its similar to my old case for my tp in that I didn't clip to the phone. You would put the bottom on, then the top by sliding the pieces together into their slides. This held it on the phone and made for no pulling apart the phone by the clips being in between the two halves. I've really been surprised that design didn't catch on a lot better then it did. I loved it!

sounds intriguing id like to hear if someone gets this and what they think
I just ordered it. I'll report back with what I find.

I just got it. It feels really good. It feels as though it should cost more money. It makes the phone fit better in my hands. Feels a lot sturdier as well. Once I get a hold of another camera I can take some pictures.

Just ordered mine too. Will post pictures when I get it.
I am highly debating getting this, I already have the max coverage invisible shield on my phone, but I would feel better if it had some rubber surrounding it. But I want to hear real world reviews before I jump.
This case isn't rubber. It feels like a hard plastic that is slightly rubbery. Feels VERY similar to the back of the evo shift 4g(without the case of course)
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
I got mine today. But its loose at the top right of my phone. Its like it doesn't fit all the way. So I'm going to return it and patienly wait for another one.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
How does it attach to the phone? Does it actually clip to it, or do the two pieces of case hold to each other? I have a few extra batteries and I want to be able to pop off the back easily, and that usually breaks the tabbed ones. So if this holds on like I think it does, it's perfect for me. How does it feel protective wise? Like are you pretty confident it will protect the phone? or does it still leave a wavering feeling like I better never drop this thing or it's shot? lol

Mine is starting to get like that too. It doesn't bother me too much though.
@unityjasont: The two sides are independent from each other. The backpiece clips onto the rear part of your phone and the top piece onto the screen/slider portion. Then you match them up so that they are on the track. It feels very solid to me. I've actually dropped my phone twice since I got this case. Just scuffed up the case a little bit and I rubbed off the scratch easily each time. It's pretty easy to pop off the backpiece. It doesn't feel as though it's going to break. I also forgot to mention that the camera, flash, and volume rocker are now recessed. So there's no worrying about scratching the camera lens, and there's a lot less accidental volume key pressing.
I took some pictures as well as a video with my macbook's crappy camera.

glad your happy
Sorry, I just don't get the piece that slides up with the screen. Seems kind of strange and in the way.
Is there a point to this thing?

3rd times a charm? I hope.

Bought a N7 two days ago, got home and charged it and it had a defect, not from the factory, but from Walmart. The screen had some damage towards the top like too much pressure had been applied there. It didn't go away and I exchanged it for another. I took that one home and started it up and the LCD panel on it was shattered, not the outer glass. They both had slight screen lift but that didn't bother me as I believe it could be fixed. Also they were both C70's. It's just got me discouraged and pretty mad. Both boxes were damaged somewhat so that's why I think its Walmarts fault. But anyway I'll replace this one this week sometime and report back.

Yeahhhh that definitely sounds like a Wal-Mart issue there... especially considering the damaged boxes and all. Do you have pictures of the boxes? I'm curious as to what condition they were in that they A) thought it was okay to put on the shelf and B) thought they were decent enough to not even warrant opening the box to make sure... unless it's somehow against Wal-Mart policy to open items to verify they're okay? (wouldn't be entirely surprising now that I think about it)
There's not much room to play for the Nexus 7 inside the factory box. They're pretty clean cut with minimal wasted/open space. Any semi decent hits it would take, especially on the top portion, might be substantially detrimental to the tablet itself.
I did 5 exchanges at various Walmarts and they were all C8O's. I was stubborn and looking for one without and screen separation. I gave up on that mission and realize they all gonna be coming with slight screen separation. But I did manage to find 2 with minor issues. I would avoid the C7O build. Only reason being its a older build.

Good luck with #3! It took me 7! (C6,C7,C7,C7,C8,C8, and now C8..you can see how messed up my account page is now LOL) to get one I was happy with, defect free. I've seen it all now, defective batteries, dead pixels, dust under the screen, screen separation on the left. All of mine have been from Gamestop.
Also you might want to give this thread a look, if you ever need to use VIP for an RMA it's actually an "O" as shook wrote it, not a zero :good:

Htc One build quality

Hello,
Been following this thread for a couple months now, almost bought the xz, but seeing both took their sweet time to launch and one's finally available...
So just returned from a mall, seen it in 2 stores, live.
It looks really nice just as pictured by everybody in these forums. The screen looks amazing, very sharp, cannot compare to anything else. Sound thru loudspeakers best I heard in a phone.
However..
The built quality seemed to lack.. Alot.
The metal parts didn't seem to be aligned properly to the point where visually they were protruding out; the corners felt rugged, especially where the metal will stick out. There were minor gaps, albeit too visible on both models.
Now, surely I have heard about these possible issues. Wasn't too worried before as consider myself less picky about things in general. But after seeing the store model, I am a little worried. I know I get to bring it back if not happy my question is how the store demo version compares to the actual thing? Aren't the demo units supposed to be better, at least in build quality? One thing I am sure of, will carefully inspect it in store.
As an aside, all my phones past 10 years bought online: I wouldn't take the same chance with one whatever return policy.

I had a few issues with build quality on my first few handsets , rough edges etc and then on my last one (which didn't suffer from the capptive button problem) I decided to just take care of the rough edges myself and used a bit of 2000 wet and dry sand paper on the polished edges and white band, now have a perfect handset

Pixel issues are going to increase as pixel density has more than doubled over the last few years. No way around it. We also need to remember that it is in no way HTC fault and that every single phone manufacturer has similar failure rates.
From what a fair few people on here have said, the most recent builds are fixing these issues.
I myself have a model with very minor build quality issues but it's not enough to make me want to get a replacement or switch to another phone.
The phones so good that these minor issues can be overlooked, by me at least.

Checked a little bit on the issues I seen or heard of before, mechanically it's almost perfect, alignment and all, no dead or stuck pixels, call quality seems alright, sound recording and playback.
The only issue if I may say so, on maximum volume there's a bit of distortion on loudspeakers.
I will get to play more with it this weekend, can hardly wait, but so far it seems like a nice replacement for my sgs2.

Yeah I'm usually not very anal about those kinds of things but I must admit that the headphone jack is pretty bad. Like mine is halfway on the aluminum casing almost. It's not in the center of the plastic between the aluminum at all like the power button. Is this normal?

hi,
i think its fairly common to a varying degree. Mine is pretty much exactly the same both top and bottom. At the moment it doesn't bother me as it is only a samll gap but i certainly would return mine if it started to get any worse. One of my friends has a one and it is horrific, especially around the usb port and another friend who has the one has no gaps whatsoever. So its a bit of a lottery. If it bothers you then i would return it, if you can live with it then enjoy.
Mine has a very tiny opening like yours on the top and my screen is raised a little bit. I've decided not to worry about it unless it gets worse because from what I've searched these are fairly common build quality issues. It's likely that you'll receive another one with some sort of issues.
Welcome to the party, pal:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197732
Its really only a defect cause HTC tried to make the entire phone gapless and advertised it as such.
Unfortunately, unlike the main aluminum body where the plastic was injected and molded into it, the top and bottom speaker grilles are simply glued on.
Like others have said, its a lottery. Go exchange it if you want. But if you can deal with it and there arent other major issues, just keep it.
For me, my first one had a gap, which didnt bother me, but it had some bad overhang and a recessed power button. So I exchanged it.
New one has a tiny overhang, tiny gap, and proper power button. I'm keeping it.

People have claimed it also worked for the speaker grills.
Someone said to aim the blow dryer in to the gap, let it get hot, clamp it down....They said that the adhesive for the grills will get soft and after I think 9 days they said the gap is still closed. Someone even stuck theirs in the fridge after to harden the glue after. Forget if they were fixing the screen lift or gaps. Could be in another thread where I read it...Sticking it in the fridge is a little too nuts for me...lol
