Hi Guys ;
I have just bought a HTC One but I notice there is a slight gap between the aluminium part and the plastic body in both top and bottom front of the phone. is it a defect ? or is it the same for everyone ? I would appreciate if you take a look at pictures and tell me how it compares to your HTC One.

hi,
i think its fairly common to a varying degree. Mine is pretty much exactly the same both top and bottom. At the moment it doesn't bother me as it is only a samll gap but i certainly would return mine if it started to get any worse. One of my friends has a one and it is horrific, especially around the usb port and another friend who has the one has no gaps whatsoever. So its a bit of a lottery. If it bothers you then i would return it, if you can live with it then enjoy.
Mine has a very tiny opening like yours on the top and my screen is raised a little bit. I've decided not to worry about it unless it gets worse because from what I've searched these are fairly common build quality issues. It's likely that you'll receive another one with some sort of issues.
Welcome to the party, pal:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197732
Its really only a defect cause HTC tried to make the entire phone gapless and advertised it as such.
Unfortunately, unlike the main aluminum body where the plastic was injected and molded into it, the top and bottom speaker grilles are simply glued on.
Like others have said, its a lottery. Go exchange it if you want. But if you can deal with it and there arent other major issues, just keep it.
For me, my first one had a gap, which didnt bother me, but it had some bad overhang and a recessed power button. So I exchanged it.
New one has a tiny overhang, tiny gap, and proper power button. I'm keeping it.

I think that is for pushing the screen down.. dont think it'll work with the the speaker grills.. it might need some adhesive.

People have claimed it also worked for the speaker grills.
Someone said to aim the blow dryer in to the gap, let it get hot, clamp it down....They said that the adhesive for the grills will get soft and after I think 9 days they said the gap is still closed. Someone even stuck theirs in the fridge after to harden the glue after. Forget if they were fixing the screen lift or gaps. Could be in another thread where I read it...Sticking it in the fridge is a little too nuts for me...lol

Dude I totally agree. Keep your phone.
Don't let these OCD freaks tell you your phone looks ugly, those gaps are pretty much on 90 percent of the phones. It has no bearing on how your phone operates.

I know, this is due to a plastic build. It seems to be due to the back case that's causing it. It doesn't happen often, but at times I can certainly feel the phone creak. Though its got me thinking, is it just my phone or does others creak in a similar matter also? I didn't really expect this from such a high end device, but eh I guess I gotta learn to live with it.
I guess I could cover it up by getting a case that encases the phone, or see if I can find another back casing.
For what its worth, mine doesn't but as you say its plastic and im sure it wont be long before mine starts. I forgot to swap my MicroSD card out of my old phone when I got the phone and now im scared to take the cover off to put it in because that battery cover is so thin and flimsy.
mine doesnt squeak also
No creaking here. I did catch one of the buttons while squeezing and it triggered the haptic feedback but no creaking. The rear panel feels flimsy when detached, but when in place the phone feels reasonably solid to me.

Maybe that's cause you're used to the Touch HD? I'm gonna make the switch from a Touch HD to the Galaxy S as well.
Seriosuly though, my Touch HD creaks only when handled in a certain way, maybe the same is true for the Galaxy S?

lol, yeah maybe
I also have a Blackberry Bold 9700 and the case for that creaks way more than any noise I can get from the Samsung.
It happens to me sometimes when I try to get a better grip
The first few times I almost **** myself thinking I broke something
Mine seems to creak when I press the top bit of the phone (just above the grill thing above the Samsung logo), and sometimes at the sides also when I pick it up. It's not that bad, but I have terrible, terrible OCD and this can bug me sometimes.

It certainly does. I got fed up of mine and sold it because of the non stop creaking from the bottom right corner of the screen.
i just got my SGS last week..... n its already making creaky noise when held tightly from the side..... is there a way to get a replacement???
Try tightening the small screws at the back. Turns out that the silver bezel is really loose out of the box for some units. Also, in some units, there is a small gap between the battery and the back plate. That makes it creak real bad though I doubt that is a structural error.

my left side creaks
mine does this sometimes, it doesn't bother me at all.
I get it here on the top of the phone in the middle.
Not worried about it, guess it gives it more personality
Now what I would really like, more cases so we can customize.
A matte or shinny steel back cover would be a nice addition
Anything really, to make it less iCrap 3 looking I hate people saying
it's an iCrap 3 and that I should get an iCrap 4
creaking silver bezel in the left bottom part here. I'm "glad" to see i'm not alone
Yups my SGS also creeks when I squeeze it from sides...

Mine creeks when I squeeze it too ... This is what happens when they try to make a hightech phone cheaper ... if they used a better plastic or something else (the Iphone has murano glass from Italy .. WTF? ) the phone would be to expensive and many of us couldn't buy it ..! As long as it doesn't hurt the phone I don't mind ! The solution for me was the silicone case (and make the difference if you drop the phone !)
Mine does, only around the power button though.

Hello everyone,
I was about to buy the htc one, but they are out of stock atm.
so went home watch some reviews and stumble across this video
..

He mentions a lot of build quality problems.
Can people with the phone confirm this?
Screen problem with light coming from the edge? dust on screen because of that? Sounds like a big problem, hope its just his model.
Also input lags, is he exaggerating things ? or can it be fixed by a buildprop command?

I have seen 4 HTC Ones. 2 with gaps and 2 without. You can return them and just state that is has build defect. Some stores will let you exchange it once and some twice but they will not keep opening boxes until you find a perfect one. The best advice I can give you is to open it in the store with a sales assistant present so they can see that it has a defect. And before you hand over your money be sure to ask if you can return it if there's a defect once they say okay for returning with defects, then open it in front of them.
Death grip?
THanks for the advice i'll definitely do that !
i saw another video who mention the death grip like with the iphone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ubr-Hzu894
can u guys confirm this?
No death grip here there are always going to be people who find faults. I mean if that's all you look for you are bound to find something. I suggest you chill and get the One open it up and just love it for what it is. You will not be disappointed.

Yes there are manufacture default. Gaps in casing, and screen that isnt glued on properly and doesnt flush with the casing.
Dust under the screen has been a problem with some phones by HTC for years.. was a common problem as far back as Nexus One. That HTC havent plugged the problem yet is beyond me. I think it will be less problematic with the one because alu case is sturdy and does not bend which caused screen sealing to crack on plastic.casings.

Do you think the speaker grill will pop off in the future? I just realized mine has quite a gap, you can slide a paper in.
But I don't want to resort to warranty since I have already been using it for a month plus, and got stuff working and all.
The grill I have in question is the bottom one.
I don't know how strong the glue supporting the bottom grill is.

Wow how did you managed to get the glue inside the gap? I mean I know it's quite a gap, but I don't think it's THAT wide to be able to squueze glue in..
Are the gaps really that much of a concern? I have a bit of a gap on the top speaker grill, but I have a case on the phone too. I don't even notice it now. I'm more concerned about the durability of "Gorilla Glass." I've had 3 iPhones now and I've never scratched my screen. I've owned the HTC One for a month and I've got two scratches already...

Nope, you don't need an LCD and digitiser assembly unless you damage your current one. You have 3 options:
1. Replace the back only (safest procedure, absolutely 0% risk of damaging components.. This is what I'd strongly recommend you to do)
2. Replace back + front speaker grilles (again, low risk method, involves the above and prying off your current grilles and replacing them with new ones, without a full disassembly)
3. Replace complete housing. This involves by far the most risk you can ever take on your phone. You can break any of the tiny flex cables/connectors, LCD, and kill other parts of the phone.
I have tried all the steps in order, and I must say, just a word of caution, it really isn't worth the mess that can be made of it.
I was happy with the 1st method (putting a black back on my silver One, but when I saw the original black one, I really wanted my speakers to be black too.. So I did the second method, and in the process, although I was extremely careful, I poked a dent in the bottom speaker, which makes it crackle. I fixed it with tape, but it'll never sound as good as it was.. Then, there were also huge gaps on the top and bottom, between the grilles and the back, which was because I hadn't managed to get all the adhesive off. In short, to any other person, it was a perfect phone, but by now, my OCD was killing me.. So I did a full disassembly. Everything went perfect, except the screen. Now I have a One with a crackly bottom speaker and two small spots on my LCD
Now that you know what can happen (even after being extremely slow and cautious), what method do you plan to follow? Btw, are you gonna be changing colors??

Nice! Even I did a silver to black conversion. So, which method do you want to go through with? Depending on that I'll give you instructions on what to do. Method 3 is gonna look the neatest of all, 2 will be good if you manage to take off every single last bit of glue, and method 1 will give you a cool 2-tone look.

Okay, let's begin!
Stuff you'll need:
1x HTC One M7 Full housing (front + back), search on ebay.. Like this
Black sim tray (ebay)
A very small sized phillips screwdriver, and tweezers (or rather get a whole kit of that mini sized stuff )
Something like 5mm double sided sticky tape
Glue that melts on heating (not sure what exactly it is called), or superglue. I'd reommend the heat one though.
A hair dryer/heat gun
Old credit cards/guitar picks etc
A razor blade
If you think that you're gonna break your display anywhere along the process, even those are available on ebay for a decent amount.
Now, I watched these videos for reference:
Disassembly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZFAsgjCunc
Reassembly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5KNmDeJ4Ww
Since your phone has been opened before, it's not gonna be as difficult as it looks in the video. What I did was pull out the volume button with my nail (the top of the button, in the middle), and once that is out, just inserted a card into the gap inside and pryed at the back, and eventually, it got off. Remove your sim tray before you start. Also, see the positions of the clips holding the housing, it'll make removing it much easier. For taking off the display, I'd say, use heat for a decent minute and half, or two, and use a suction cup. This is the only part which isn't made clear on any youtube video that I've seen, so be careful. You could also get your technician to just transplant the display to the new housing.
Any way, ask away if you have any questions, and good luck!

Doesn't seem like cracks. Looks like fusing of plastic and aluminum was not perfect, but nothing to worry about.

Well.. called my Local Phone shop and will receive a new back cover. But the cracks.. it should not crack and I think it is a HUGE design flaw.. even more so when more note 4's have the same cracks. A 780+ euro should not crack! Dont get me wrong.. I love the note 4.. And maby there is a little samsung fan boy with in me, but this, I just can not accept this.
I wouldn't call that a crack, it's at the point where metal frame is molded onto plastic chassis, I'd say it's expected to split due to the heat and etc.
Everyone has that on the bottom I think it's normal

Again, you do know that, that plastic and the metal frame are one piece? They don't come apart. In the process of fusing plastic to the aluminum, there are some tolerances, especially considering that it is under the cover.
When you say crack, one assumes, it developed after the purchase. I would probably assume you bought it like that.
And no, all back covers are supposed to be like that.
