[Q] Should I change the housing myself? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi fellas,
I'm in dilemma of whether to have a go at changing my One's housing myself or go to a local repair shop and change it for $60? $60 is the price if I have the parts.
Strictly cosmetic reasons

They are a bit of a ***** if you haven't done it before. For 60 bucks I'd get it done by an expert

Has your phone ever been repaired by HTC before? I've done a housing swap, and it's not difficult at all, if done slowly and carefully

Yes, it makes your job significantly easier . Now, what's the purpose of the housing change? Do you want to change front + back, or only back? Only back is much, much easier.

Looks. Front and back, but I don't have any tools. Do I have to buy the LCD digitizer as well?

Nope, you don't need an LCD and digitiser assembly unless you damage your current one. You have 3 options:
1. Replace the back only (safest procedure, absolutely 0% risk of damaging components.. This is what I'd strongly recommend you to do)
2. Replace back + front speaker grilles (again, low risk method, involves the above and prying off your current grilles and replacing them with new ones, without a full disassembly)
3. Replace complete housing. This involves by far the most risk you can ever take on your phone. You can break any of the tiny flex cables/connectors, LCD, and kill other parts of the phone.
I have tried all the steps in order, and I must say, just a word of caution, it really isn't worth the mess that can be made of it.
I was happy with the 1st method (putting a black back on my silver One, but when I saw the original black one, I really wanted my speakers to be black too.. So I did the second method, and in the process, although I was extremely careful, I poked a dent in the bottom speaker, which makes it crackle. I fixed it with tape, but it'll never sound as good as it was.. Then, there were also huge gaps on the top and bottom, between the grilles and the back, which was because I hadn't managed to get all the adhesive off. In short, to any other person, it was a perfect phone, but by now, my OCD was killing me.. So I did a full disassembly. Everything went perfect, except the screen. Now I have a One with a crackly bottom speaker and two small spots on my LCD
Now that you know what can happen (even after being extremely slow and cautious), what method do you plan to follow? Btw, are you gonna be changing colors??

Nice! Even I did a silver to black conversion. So, which method do you want to go through with? Depending on that I'll give you instructions on what to do. Method 3 is gonna look the neatest of all, 2 will be good if you manage to take off every single last bit of glue, and method 1 will give you a cool 2-tone look.

Okay, let's begin!
Stuff you'll need:
1x HTC One M7 Full housing (front + back), search on ebay.. Like this
Black sim tray (ebay)
A very small sized phillips screwdriver, and tweezers (or rather get a whole kit of that mini sized stuff )
Something like 5mm double sided sticky tape
Glue that melts on heating (not sure what exactly it is called), or superglue. I'd reommend the heat one though.
A hair dryer/heat gun
Old credit cards/guitar picks etc
A razor blade
If you think that you're gonna break your display anywhere along the process, even those are available on ebay for a decent amount.
Now, I watched these videos for reference:
Disassembly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZFAsgjCunc
Reassembly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5KNmDeJ4Ww
Since your phone has been opened before, it's not gonna be as difficult as it looks in the video. What I did was pull out the volume button with my nail (the top of the button, in the middle), and once that is out, just inserted a card into the gap inside and pryed at the back, and eventually, it got off. Remove your sim tray before you start. Also, see the positions of the clips holding the housing, it'll make removing it much easier. For taking off the display, I'd say, use heat for a decent minute and half, or two, and use a suction cup. This is the only part which isn't made clear on any youtube video that I've seen, so be careful. You could also get your technician to just transplant the display to the new housing.
Any way, ask away if you have any questions, and good luck!

mm in width? 3 would be ok, you'll need two or three strips to hold the battery down.

Incredible S disassembled

Hey guys
So i cracked my touch digitizer and decided to chance it myself.
I have taken some pictures of the phone disassembled.
So if anyone is curoius to see the inside of their phone, here it is...
If there is something you want a closer look of, just tell me and i will take a picture.
I haven't put it back together yet, cause i didn't know you needed some special tape to mount the digitizer...
Pretty neat. I rember taking my Nexus One apart. I got the digitizer and screen together. Didn't want to deal with the tape/glue aspect.

Great job!
I was in the same shoe as you. Mine was a badly cracked LCD while the touch screen didn't even have a single scratch. Don't ask how I did it
Dismantling the LCD and the touch screen assembly was the toughest part. Seems like all newer and slimmer phones are using glue to fix their parts together. A nightmare for DIY.
I used normal double sided tape to put mine back together. Seems to be holding well so far. However, I am still looking around for better alternatives. Let me know if you find one!
I love my INCS!
could you make close-up pics from the bottom leds that are being used?
im actually thinking of replacing them for blue or orange
Was it hard to do because I have some dust under my screen and maybe give it a try.
How did you manage to crack the gorilla glass??
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Yeah, i'm gonna try to replace my digitizer as well, i'm kinda scared to pull the screen & digitizer apart... I've read that you can heat it up using a hairdryer and that the glue will get loose, but i'm not sure if i have the guts to heat my screen up
So how did you manage to get the screen off?
Don't think it is worth the effort and risk to just get rid of a few dust particles.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Guys, using a hairdryer f***s the phone up. You don' need lot of time to overheat any metal parts and circuits and stuff break...
You think it isnt that hot, but works the same way like when u are in the sauna and your necklace burns your neck when it hangs apart from your body for a couple of seconds.

I'm afraid i cant to that. I'm afraid of braking it when removing the tape wich is on it. The button "display" is 0,5 mm thick or so. Im not even sure it is possible to replace them.

After removing everything on the back i was able to push at the back of the screen in the top of the phone, and then get a little plastick tool in and pulled it of.
Its quite hard to pull off but the glass was already cracked so i just pulled a bit hard.
I was a little bit more carefull with the LCD. Its also quite hard to remove. Just took my chances and hoped the glue would give in before the LCD craced
Cool story bro, I always wanted to know what's inside!
Can you post a high res picture of just the mother board particularly the NAND flash of possible

Worn volume buttons / battery plate? Any tips?

On my white Vivid, the volume and power buttons chrome are compelely worn out and its copper color, and the back battery plate is starting to chip its paint as well. Im kinda picky and things like this kinda bug me (expecially how the buttons clash with the rest of the white body)
Has anyone tried anything to remedy this or restore it? Painting it perhaps? I would like anyone who has done something about this to share how they touched up the worn parts (besides using a case)
I remember there was a thread a few months back about this issue. I don't remember a resolution coming up other than the case. I wonder if you could buy replacement buttons, not sure about painting. Seems like you would have to take it apart to do it since if any got in to the crevices it could mess up your phone.

Im referring to that matte coating that it has on. I have chromed a mytouch 4G before. How is it working out for you? Because when I did it to the mytouch it looked great but the chrome smugdes very easily and was hard to clean, does the vivid plate smudge the same way?

Do it!! Also heads up to everyone HTC will send you a new batterydoor free if you "lose" it. My friend just got a new door after his was dented badly.
Just finished working on my battery plate. What I did was spray it with Tylex, and lightly sand/buff with the tougher side of a sponge, the coating came off so easily and now I have a brushed metal look, im very pleased!!! Uploaded a pic. Now if there was some way i can make the power/vol buttons not clash with the copper color...
Btw, in real life it looks much better, obviously the flash will make the textures pop out more

Thnx for the tips. Interesting point about the fingernail paint, could this work on the vol buttons? I could cover the edges and apply a small coat to cover up the copper color, either silver or white. Question is, would this last without easily chipping?

If u feel that way the be our guest and get you a iPhone ..imo iPhones suck too
I have had all version of the iphone since 2007. even back then the build quality is better. All I'm saying is something as simple as paint on a part should not flake off so quickly and now I'm stuck with copper buttons with no idea how to fix or repair it. So instead of coming on here and telling me to buy a new phone how about laying an idea to fix the issue..
btw: to others with this issue I have posted on HTCs website.. but I'm sure they will work on it like fixing the voice dialer option.. haha

My assembly skills suck..60 bucks and a chance to completely destroy the phone..hahah . I need to call AT&T and see if they or HTC will do warranty work on it. there is too much of a tight tolerance to try to chrome it and then clear coat it. Ill never be able to push the buttons in.. haha
Well I finally caved in.. I called HTC and asked them if there was a way to fix it myself and they basically told me no. The phone still has its 1 year warranty and they explained the process to me.. They only have one repair center in ALL of America..haha (Texas). So when you call and talk to them they will give you an RMA number. take out your batt, sim, case and send it to them.
They were easy to get a hold of and it was pretty quick to get things set up. It will be hard to not have a smart phone for 2 weeks but I had a back up pos. Since my back up phone was not a smart phone I went to an ATT store and they did it for me but told me I would "Lose" my unlimited plan because that phone didnt support it. The manager told me he will contact the right people to get it back.. then told me for 10 bucks a month(insurance) I could just get a new phone.. I told him I'm already paying 160/mo for 3 phones..haha
Anyways, the moral of the story is, if you are having this issue send it in now before your warranty is gone or live with copper color buttons.

hi,
i think its fairly common to a varying degree. Mine is pretty much exactly the same both top and bottom. At the moment it doesn't bother me as it is only a samll gap but i certainly would return mine if it started to get any worse. One of my friends has a one and it is horrific, especially around the usb port and another friend who has the one has no gaps whatsoever. So its a bit of a lottery. If it bothers you then i would return it, if you can live with it then enjoy.
Mine has a very tiny opening like yours on the top and my screen is raised a little bit. I've decided not to worry about it unless it gets worse because from what I've searched these are fairly common build quality issues. It's likely that you'll receive another one with some sort of issues.
Welcome to the party, pal:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2197732
Its really only a defect cause HTC tried to make the entire phone gapless and advertised it as such.
Unfortunately, unlike the main aluminum body where the plastic was injected and molded into it, the top and bottom speaker grilles are simply glued on.
Like others have said, its a lottery. Go exchange it if you want. But if you can deal with it and there arent other major issues, just keep it.
For me, my first one had a gap, which didnt bother me, but it had some bad overhang and a recessed power button. So I exchanged it.
New one has a tiny overhang, tiny gap, and proper power button. I'm keeping it.

People have claimed it also worked for the speaker grills.
Someone said to aim the blow dryer in to the gap, let it get hot, clamp it down....They said that the adhesive for the grills will get soft and after I think 9 days they said the gap is still closed. Someone even stuck theirs in the fridge after to harden the glue after. Forget if they were fixing the screen lift or gaps. Could be in another thread where I read it...Sticking it in the fridge is a little too nuts for me...lol

Dude I totally agree. Keep your phone.
Don't let these OCD freaks tell you your phone looks ugly, those gaps are pretty much on 90 percent of the phones. It has no bearing on how your phone operates.

Help changing the top speaker grill on HTC One!

Hi, I damaged my phone on the top so I am trying to replace the top speaker grill cover, I already have the replacement but I have no idea how to do it without messing my phone. I have investigated a lot and in the only teardown video I fount the top spekar grill seems to always be attached to the phone, and the ifixit guid has no information on this part of the phone. Please if anyone has done it or knows how to do this any kind of help would be useful as I can't stand to se my phone damaged no more.
Thanks

Good luck, from everything I have seen it is glued to the phone. YMMV but my guess you would need to heat it up, peel it off the phone and then figure some way to glue the new one on.
It looks like the speakers are step 17 in the link below and there are 19 streps shown to dismantle (at that site anyways).
HTC One Repairability Score: One out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair) I see How the HTC"ONE" got its name
HTC One Teardown
Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace.

You are most likely not going to find any thing related to your speaker grill replacement. This phone is not meant to be and have user replaceable parts.
Even most of the pros won't touch it to replace parts, but they buy them to strip for parts to sell to people that want to attempt DIY repairs only to further destroy the phone.
If you do figure it out and everything is repairable, working, and looks new please post a guide.

HTC One Top Cover Replacement
Guys,
I am ordering the top cover (& bottom cover parts) from this site:
http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-htc-one-top-cover-and-bottom-cover.html
My top cover has deep dink/dent since I dropped it from waist high to the floor (NAKED).
The replacement will arrive in 10-15 days from Today.
The top cover speaker grill is glued and screwed while the bottom cover speaker grill only glued.
I manage to take off the top cover by pulling it off and cut the screwed part. I don't want to open the screw since it can be only opened if you open the whole back chassis of the phone.
When the top cover part arrive, I will cut the screw part and just glue it to the phone.
Currently I am using my secondary phone which is the boring iPhone 5, it is still boring even with iOS 7 installed.
Will update the post with pictures and guides when the replacement arrive, wish me luck guys!! :good::good:

Replacing housing on Note 3?

I have some scuffs on the chrome plastic around the Note and because I'm OCD, want to repair it but cannot find what part it is. I watched ifixit and etradesupply but I'm not sure which part I have to replace, does anyone know? Thanks.

Don't know the part number but I picked one up off eBay for less than $20 shipped. Just don't trash your screen like I did during the install. Had to buy a new screen for $240:crying:

Yeah, I'm assuming it's all one piece and is the housing I'm looking for. How did you trash your screen? Did a cable tear or something?

This is the part you're wanting. You can get the whole shebang for like 275. At least then you don't possibly botch the screen and need to replace it all and do the gluing etc.
****
Basically, you CAN buy just the housing, but you will have to remove all the hardware (motherboard, etc) from the back of the old one, then using a heat gun/hair dryer, seperate the glass/LED screen/digitizer from the housing, and then re-glue the glass/LED screen/digitizer to the new housing, reattaching the motherboard, etc. You also have to worry about the capacitive buttons at the bottom. And all without doing any damage. Its quite doable, but not necessarily 'easy'.
There are videos of the process all over youtube on various phones like the S3 and S4, as well as the Note 2. And I've seen one or two videos of it being done on a Note 3, however they've destroyed the glass in the ones I've seen. Its not really a recommended process for replacing the housing/bezel, and more for replacing already damaged screens.
However, if you buy the whole shebang for 275, I believe not only do you get the housing along with the pre-attached glass/screen/digitizer, you also get some of the smaller components like USB port and such as well. So you could part out the extra pieces and make up some of the cost.
Either way, there are a few options you have available, ranging from cheap and hard to fix, to expensive and super easy.
GL on the end result!
I was alittle impatient with the hair dryer cracked the digitizer before I even knew it. If you take your time it's not hard if you pay attention to the video.

This. If you have little patience, don't even attempt it. If you do, go slow, and you should be fine.
Thanks all for the advice and links. I'm rather leery of gluing and possibly messing the screen up, but my insurance plan to get a new phone is less than the completed housing cost. Maybe a case will cover it so I'm not reminded daily of how I failed as a phone parent.

That was going to be my next response, if its not bad a case is the way to go. The only reason i actually even attemped this was because the back cover wouldnt go back on correctly anymore.
