[Q] how many bricks? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would love to know how many people have bricked their notes. Is it just an odd few or are there 100s.Has anyone had repairs ,unbricked or replaced by their carrier?

I too would like to know this.

Ok

Soft brick? I am sure there are tons, me included, a proper brick brick after which you use the phone for a coaster, don't think so many, though I have one of those too (shattered display).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was nearly impossible to brick an Android phone? When I was learning to flash and so on with my SGS, I certainly bollocked it up a lot of times (ah... misadventures with using incorrect files...). I have always been able one way or another been able to get back in and mend the damage.
With the Note, Download mode is hardwired in so I thought it would be difficult indeed to properly brick it. That said, I haven't done much with the SGN yet since it's my daily device and I leave it alone. (@torqu3e, I don't think shattered screens count towards the typical definition of 'bricked' do they? I thought it was a software f-up )

When someone says brick, I think of a phone that just won't turn on and is completely useless...but in many people's cases recently, the partition tables have been messed up and the phone is as good as useless. It no longer holds its function as an Android device. So yes, add me to the list of "bricked" Notes out there.

I got a hard brick! :-( It's in the shop..

Sharing wat you did to brick your phone might help others prevent it.This is not only to you but to all who's gonna report here....

I was talking more about bricking from flashing that dodgy ics ROM.Anyone unbricked or had it fixed under warranty.

Add me to the list. I bricked when I flashed a kernel that messed up the partition tables. Its at the service now.

one more to the list
i need to sent mine to the US

I faced a soft brick when i was flashing ics betas (mobile to pc screen) but fixed it by flashing stock rom then flashed back ics!

Same here, I think it will be more than 20. at least

You should've made this a poll - feels a bit silly responding 'never bricked'

In ODIN while trying to flash CF-Root ICS progress bar froze on Factoryfs flash and after 30 minutes I unplugged it. Phone at this point wont restart turn on or anything. Didn't respond to JIG to go into download mode so I took it to a service center in Southern California. They tried fixing it with JTAG and it didn't respond. It is Kernel related. I got some sort of good news today from the service center that they may have found a solution and are receiving a new tool to do the trick. I am crossing my fingers and waiting for the next phone call from them that if they could get my phone up and running again!!

It can definitely be fixed, it's just a matter of how easily it can be done. Have you tried some of the unusual combinations people have come up with to get into download mode. For example removing the battery, holding power + volume down + home and then reinserting the battery whilst these buttons are held?
Also, if you can't get into download mode that doesn't mean you have to sell it as parts. Samsung will be able to repair it, if they can't tell what you did then perhaps they'll repair it for free under warranty.
Sometimes I just wonder why people try to install low-level software on their device that ISNT MEANT for their device. There is a reason, the captivate has a different model number and that is because it requires DIFFERENT software.
This comes close to me flashing the BIOS for an AMD motherboard on my X58 Intel motherboard.
reason for people installing other software is in my case because im STUPID !!! I stood almost 24 h reading forums in my country and stuff , and i googled ODIN the first link was this ODIN ONE CLIK i entered read about things there and it seamed to be for my phone, and from there we know the story. I did not think for one moment that the soft was for another phone. After i broke it i read all 42 pages and realized that.
I can't get the phone to do anything.... i can't charge it ... it's like the USB does not exist. If i start the phone unpluged, when i plug the usb in turns oFF , ass soon as i take out the USB it will start again to flash the AT&T logo...
I hope if i can't fix it, that SAMSUNG service will change it or can repair it and not charge a hunormus amount of money for that
you have give me hope telling that it can be fixed by samsung , and i still am opened for advices from u guys

I'm sorry for that. It's a little bit of frustration speaking there. But I guess you have a way bigger problem. Although that post about putting the right file on the SD seems interesting (but I haven't heard of anything like that before).
But if you can, returning the phone and hoping that samsung will fix it will be the easiest fix.

If it won't respond to any button combos, then no, a jig is your only option.
If a jig won't bring it back, I hope you still have warranty left
I have read there is an easier way than chopping up usb so I will try the resistor method tomorrow maybe.
I was reading typically the only way to do this is to more or less totally kill your bootloader..
So if I can't get the resistor method working and I file a warranty.. I wonder if it would go through? or if they would actually try to check and see what I have done.. and if they did check if they would try to see if I rooted or what not..
and what is the typical success rate of jigs?

Pretty much my plan..
I would guess the likely hood of my phone dying is about the same either way.
If my computer died in the middle of the real update, I am willing to bet the same thing would have happened..
Wonder if I should try to switch out for atrix XD (kidding for the most part).
*edit* a user on android forums actually had a pretty good question.
If it is bricked like this..
Will they be able to tell that it was every rooted/flashed because even if they do get it to the DLM screen whatever they load would just reflash it..

[Q] - Change ROM => Boot between start screens

Hi,
I own a Captivate on Rogers (Canada).
I had the ROM Firefly 2.6 (or 2.4) and decided to change to something quicker or at least different.
I decided to put Cyanogen 7 on it, because many people told me to.
I succeeded in installing Cyanogen and it worked great, easy to use, fast, ultra fast reboot, nice looking... but not all the software I was looking for.
So I decided to change again to a JVQ SIMPLY.
Put it on the SD, move it to sdcard via Astro under Cyanogen and reboot in recovery mode to install update from sdcard.
It wrote that it was ok, and needed to reboot.
Now the only thing I have is "booting" from
- the very first screen with Galaxy S I9000 on it to
- a second one with Galaxy S Cyanogen(mod)
I can access the screen with the little android guy in the public works sign, yellow, with Downloading... and Do not turn off Target!!! (did it trying hard reset).
I couldn't reboot with 3 buttons (tested many methods), the one with Odin, I never ever succeeded with that one, and it continues changing from a screen to another without stopping but if I remove the battery of course.
What can I do from there?
Thank you for your help... again...
Just for clarification, did you do the Odin One-Click to stock? If you can get to the download screen (the yellow sign / "Do not turn off target" screen), you should be able to flash back to stock.
I tried the Odin 1-click, but I think that it won't work right now because I can't access the administrator rights (from work).
I must try from home tonight.
Will it remove everything like the fact it is root?
Thank you for your answer by the way.
The lack of admin rights is very possibly why it won't work. There's also the chance that without admin rights, you're not able to install the samsung drivers. Either way, waiting until you get home sounds like a good idea.
You might be able to do the Heimdall one-click without admin rights, but it would probably be wise to read up on that one first as it's in Beta right now.
The one-click to stock will put your phone in the state it came out of the box, but leave all your personal files on the phone. You will have Eclair 2.1, unrooted, straight as it came from (in your case) Rogers. Any pictures, music, etc you saved on your internal sd card (not the microSD) will still be there, but you'll have to re-root and reinstall any rom you want.
Ok, so I tried different Odin (one click) I found here, and the last one, from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126704&highlight=odin
I flashed the PIT only, because I didnùt know what to put where... bad idea, now my phone doesn't switch on.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but it looks like you might have fully bricked yourself.
If you are still under warranty, you can try to send it in for warranty service. If not, or if you aren't comfortable taking that route, look for a member named connexion2005 (or mobiletechvideos on google), who can do JTAG service for you for $50.
The JTAG thing is the special cable made from special resistor, right?
Or do you mean it is hard break and only expert can do something?
Thank you very much for your help and your support.

You're thinking of a Jig, which is a set of resistors that kicks the phone into download mode.
Unfortunately, you need JTAG, which is a special service that rewrites the bootloaders to the phone so that it can boot normally. That's something that you either need to be fairly knowledgeable about electronics to do yourself, or something you'll need to send in (to Samsung or mobiletechvideos) to have fixed.
Yeah I thought of a jig...
Ok, I will try the warranty, perhaps it is so much messed up, they won't find anything...
I will let you know.
See you.

Good luck - hopefully your next time around with custom Roms will go better.
I did many, many things with WInMo and never encountered any brick (sometimes I was close to the cliff, but never fell).
Since I have this Captivate, I not sure to really like it, I am fond of android either, and I don't take enough time to read carefully each post...
I think it is time for me to take an iphone...
Although you could do that, I think you'll find if you give yourself a little time with Android you'll come to really like it.
Don't get me wrong - the iPhone is a well made product. But it is one thing, and only one thing. Android devices can really be anything you want.
But that's my opnion. Do with it what you will.

Thank you. I'm just trying to repay the many favors everyone else here on the board has done for me in the past.
Definitely look around - if the Captivate isn't working for you, there's plenty of Android phones that are every bit as good. I've also had good luck with HTC phones in the past, and Motorola's not bad, either.
And yes, Apple is expensive. Can't argue with you on that one.
This might be stupid question but, is your battery charged ?
Hi,
aww.W.T.F, I hope so yes... it was on the usb for hours... you put me a doubt... I need to check now!!
I asked Rogers for warranty, they charge $35 for an exchange, and 5 days to wait, I think this is a little bit too much. But I will do it.
What I discussed with a guy is that I will finish my current subscription with Rogers and take the HTC Sensation with Virgin... Another try with android, to follow jmtheiss.
I will continue to let you know about how it goes.
If my profile is closed tonight, this will be because I will be too ashamed because I had an empty battery...
P.S. Ok it is not the battery... I'm waiting for my new one and will send this one to warranty (I'll see what they can find or not...).

[Q] Phone bricked?

hey guys i searched and havent really found anything that matched quite what i had going on so here we go... I was 95 percent through flashing the ICS rom it got through the hboot section and rebooted.. on the screen i saw two arrows in circular form above a phone .. and something was definitely being downloaded.. then the phone went black, doesnt go into hboot, doesnt a charging light when plugged in , but is picked up by the computer, ie. connection noise. Im in no way a noob at flashing roms , but something is definitely wrong with my phone.. Any ideas? It was charged full battery by the way.. it does glow in a dull light when i push volume down and power, or power alone...
Your phone indeed seems to be bricked. The identification noise from the computer may just mean that your USB is receiving power from the battery.
When my friend had a similar problem with his Amaze, he went to the HTC service center and they replaced his phone after keeping it for 4 days
So taking it to bestbuy to get it serviced is probably the only alternative, since its insured through them... lol just my luck

I followed the alternate directions here and had no issues.

Not sure why you keep posting it's not safe. I think I've seen like 3 people who've screwed it up out of probably 100+ installs. PirateGhost has released an ICS RUU which is completely noob proof so even unrooted users can get some ICS love before the OTA update.
As far as im concerned each one of us is responsible for what happens to our phones, warnings are put for a reason.. ive jailbroken, rooted the hardest of phones .. it was just my time for the inevitable to happen. I get my phone back in three days and you can be sure ill be back here again doing crazy rooty stuff to my phone no rom or dev should be held responsible for what ive done ..

Saying something is noob proof will inevitably prove that some where some noob will sow its not noob proof. I'll admit there were a few moments of panic when I flashed the zip method pg released. When that happened I just breathed deep and took my time and everything worked great in the end. I personally feel that what the devs have put out there is fairly safe as long as the directions are followed exactly.

yea i must say it was a hundreed percent my fault in bricking my device so im not mad at anyone..and as far as the money goes its not a super big deal..i always make more o and btw im gonna be getting my replacement today and im gonna try this all again aft6er reading everything again and again and agian o and again lol
So, the phone is bricked. I have the same problem as the OP. I Lost access to Hboot while flashing ICS. I accidently sent it to recovery after Hboot update...and it never recovered LOL. Anyone know a good de-bricking service or know how much it will cost if I send it back to HTC or AT&t to fix it? I bought mine at the AT&T store, so no protection plan. I'm gonna get another device anyway (from Best Buy this time), but it would be great to have the Vivid back as a backup.
I bricked my phone Sunday night, still not 100% sure what I did wrong but it did what yours is doing now. I simply called the AT&T exchange by mail and used the factory warranty. Granted I guess there is a slight chance they could find out it was rooted (if they can somehow get it to recover or even turn on) but it got me a replacement... Food for thought.
Btw I got the new one and used the RUU and it worked seamlessly.

I did the same thing, selected recovery right after successful HBoot update. Then afterwards, each and every restart shows searching sd card with a black background. After several attempts of pulling battery, reinsert and power button + vol down, I was able to get back into HBoot. From there I immediately flash recovery through fastboot and now am happily on ICS.
If you did the same and phone boots up with the searching sd screen, there is a shot of bring it back.

Fraid it doesn't search for anything. I posted in the threads and tried everything I could think of and everything that was suggested. Though there isn't much you can do besides keep removing the battery and trying vol dn + pwr. Just a black screen.
Just a few things I tried (removed battery each time)- vol down + power (no sd card in) = blank black screen
vol down + power (with sd card and PH39IMG file) = blank black screen
vol down + power > boots to blank black screen, wait few seconds > press power button (like I'm going to fastboot) > plug into computer > type fastboot command into command prompt = command prompt says waiting for device
I always read the directions and threads a bunch of times before doing anything. Did lots of reading, google-ing, and searching. Fraid it bit the dust. I appreciate the help though. This is the first device snafu I've had. I've never had to send a phone in for any kind of warrantee work before. Hence my question above about getting it fixed.
Just in case, if it were to boot to that screen, what would I want to do? Just the PH39IMG? Or is there some other procedure?

Who TOLD you to flash the phone??? When I got my first android phone, a Samsung Fascinate, I LOVED the phone but nervous AS HELL that I would brick the phone. And I read, and read, and REREAD, trying to make sure I understood everything so that when I went looking for help, I at least could say, "Yes, I already tried this, this, and this".
I think the key thing to all of this is in two-fold - one, as someone stated before, this is a developer's forum. If you work on your car, and forgot to put oil in it, are you going to blame your mechanic? If you change your brakes and did not do something correctly, causing an accident, are you going to blame the car manufacturer??? Two, it states in MANY places, before you post, READ, READ, READ. It was actually ADVISED to NOT FLASH this ROM...
From this point forward, it almost seems as if there needs to be a waiver release to download roms, stating you will not ridicule nor torment the developers. And though I had heard about it but never seen it before, as I am on my 4th Android phone, there definitely are a few VERY NOTICEABLE disrespectful and ungrateful individuals in this forum. If you were my kid, and acted like that to me for something I GAVE YOU, I would do the same as PG - TAKE IT WAY and forget you.

Is my Captivate bricked?

I trying loading using Odin but it got stuck at "Setting up connection"
I then restarted PC and did it again and this time it went 2 more steps and then the screen became completely GREEN
Then I did the whole exercise again and now the screen became PINK
Now I am not even able to get into DOWNLOAD MODE...and neither do I see [mobile]![PC] icons.
Nothing happens. Is my phone now really bricked?
Please help! I am now worried about this
If the phone shows signs of life then its not bricked.
Also please don't create multiple threads on the same problem. It just clutters the forums even more.
I think I do not see any signs. It does not show anything on the screen even after trying download mode or recover mode. Powering on the phone also does nothing. I even kept the phone on charging the whole night but during the charging I did not see the usual green battery animation.
Is there anything left? Looks like I literally destroyed my working phone running 2.2. just by trying to upgrade it to 2.3 through Kies and then later using Odin.
I am very disappointed that how poor Samsung support is that a mere upgrade attempt destroys the phone. I had bought this phone 18 months ago by paying 540 $ and I now see it go down the drain
You can attempt contacting samsung if it was messed up with Kies but doubt they would do anything. But Kies is crap anyways. You can how ever attempt (or pay someone) to apply Unbrickable Mod (Adam Outler or MobileTechVideos.com)
there is one last thing you can try.
start odin on pc
take battery out of phone
put battery in
hold both volume buttons
plug USB cord in from pc to phone
if odin box turns yellow press start to flash a firmware!
it very rarely happens that you can do this but if you can, congratulations.
What odin u using ?

Thanks for the reply.
Will the "jig" hack work? My phone is totally unresponsive. No matter what I press nothing displays on the phone.

UMB..watching the videos looks like i will need some hardware hacker to fix it. Do you suggest a hardware novice should try it or leave it to the professional?

I contacted Adam and he has agreed to offer his expert services. Now the problem is that I am in India and I can ship it to US but it will cost me dearly when he ships back because of the Indian custom rules. They will tread my repaired phone as a new one and add 15% duty costing me more than original phone cost.
So I am thinking of sending it through my friend who is visiting US later this month. However, I was looking around and found this link.

Do you think this is something I should try? I already have good Arduino UNO toolkit.

What you should know is Jtaging requires you to solder 6 very small spots vs UBM is 2 spots (I believe) and UBM will make your phone umbrickable. You could find a tech near you live that's good with a solder gun? Adam has a thread explaining the method.

Have you tried to force the phone into downloading mode using adb?
Using Doc's Master ROM v7: Cappy edition

No. I have not.
(a) How can it be done. I already have the Android SDK installed on my PC.
(b) My phone is totally non-responsive...it is totally blank black screen. Will adb work?
Adb requires phone on or in recovery
