I trying loading using Odin but it got stuck at "Setting up connection"
I then restarted PC and did it again and this time it went 2 more steps and then the screen became completely GREEN
Then I did the whole exercise again and now the screen became PINK
Now I am not even able to get into DOWNLOAD MODE...and neither do I see [mobile]![PC] icons.
Nothing happens. Is my phone now really bricked?
Please help! I am now worried about this
If the phone shows signs of life then its not bricked.
Also please don't create multiple threads on the same problem. It just clutters the forums even more.
I think I do not see any signs. It does not show anything on the screen even after trying download mode or recover mode. Powering on the phone also does nothing. I even kept the phone on charging the whole night but during the charging I did not see the usual green battery animation.
Is there anything left? Looks like I literally destroyed my working phone running 2.2. just by trying to upgrade it to 2.3 through Kies and then later using Odin.
I am very disappointed that how poor Samsung support is that a mere upgrade attempt destroys the phone. I had bought this phone 18 months ago by paying 540 $ and I now see it go down the drain
You can attempt contacting samsung if it was messed up with Kies but doubt they would do anything. But Kies is crap anyways. You can how ever attempt (or pay someone) to apply Unbrickable Mod (Adam Outler or MobileTechVideos.com)
there is one last thing you can try.
start odin on pc
take battery out of phone
put battery in
hold both volume buttons
plug USB cord in from pc to phone
if odin box turns yellow press start to flash a firmware!
it very rarely happens that you can do this but if you can, congratulations.
What odin u using ?

Thanks for the reply.
Will the "jig" hack work? My phone is totally unresponsive. No matter what I press nothing displays on the phone.

I contacted Adam and he has agreed to offer his expert services. Now the problem is that I am in India and I can ship it to US but it will cost me dearly when he ships back because of the Indian custom rules. They will tread my repaired phone as a new one and add 15% duty costing me more than original phone cost.
So I am thinking of sending it through my friend who is visiting US later this month. However, I was looking around and found this link.

Do you think this is something I should try? I already have good Arduino UNO toolkit.

What you should know is Jtaging requires you to solder 6 very small spots vs UBM is 2 spots (I believe) and UBM will make your phone umbrickable. You could find a tech near you live that's good with a solder gun? Adam has a thread explaining the method.

No. I have not.
(a) How can it be done. I already have the Android SDK installed on my PC.
(b) My phone is totally non-responsive...it is totally blank black screen. Will adb work?

It can definitely be fixed, it's just a matter of how easily it can be done. Have you tried some of the unusual combinations people have come up with to get into download mode. For example removing the battery, holding power + volume down + home and then reinserting the battery whilst these buttons are held?
Also, if you can't get into download mode that doesn't mean you have to sell it as parts. Samsung will be able to repair it, if they can't tell what you did then perhaps they'll repair it for free under warranty.
Sometimes I just wonder why people try to install low-level software on their device that ISNT MEANT for their device. There is a reason, the captivate has a different model number and that is because it requires DIFFERENT software.
This comes close to me flashing the BIOS for an AMD motherboard on my X58 Intel motherboard.
reason for people installing other software is in my case because im STUPID !!! I stood almost 24 h reading forums in my country and stuff , and i googled ODIN the first link was this ODIN ONE CLIK i entered read about things there and it seamed to be for my phone, and from there we know the story. I did not think for one moment that the soft was for another phone. After i broke it i read all 42 pages and realized that.
I can't get the phone to do anything.... i can't charge it ... it's like the USB does not exist. If i start the phone unpluged, when i plug the usb in turns oFF , ass soon as i take out the USB it will start again to flash the AT&T logo...
I hope if i can't fix it, that SAMSUNG service will change it or can repair it and not charge a hunormus amount of money for that
you have give me hope telling that it can be fixed by samsung , and i still am opened for advices from u guys

I'm sorry for that. It's a little bit of frustration speaking there. But I guess you have a way bigger problem. Although that post about putting the right file on the SD seems interesting (but I haven't heard of anything like that before).
But if you can, returning the phone and hoping that samsung will fix it will be the easiest fix.

Ok lets get straight to the point, I got a brand new captivate from at&t. Ive always used custom roms but never had an android. So of course i wanted to flash a custom rom. So i prepared my phone and followed ALL instructions for flashing a custom ROM. I couldnt run any update.zip files thoe because of the stupid verify thing. So LISTEN, I took the patch that patches 3e recovery back to 2e recovery aka kernal swap.....then everything worked fine and i got cwm to load and installed Apex_7.
AFTER the install was complete i was so excited. I selected reboot now, the AT&T logo came up and then the screen went all jacked up(looked like a broke screen) then went to the samsung logo and just keeps replaying it.
So after seeing this i freaked out and pulled the battery. Then i went and researched before doing anything else i came to the conclusion i needed to download odin pre-packed so i downloaded the odin stock installer.
Now LISTEN I put my phone into download mode ran odin and it said it succesfuly installed after about 3 minutes. So i then turn the phone off then turned it back on, it booted to the at&t logo then the screen goes black and loads at&t logo again (constant loop that heats the phone up)
AND NOW if i try to get into download mode it goes to the battery screen with no animation just a battery and a loading symbol
ALSO( I have made a usb jig ) BUT my ohm meter will not read the resistance of more than 2 resistors when i add the third one it reads it really fast and then shows nothing.
PLEASE HELP ME I LOVE THIS PHONE MORE THAN MY IPHONE OR MY HTC.
Credit will be given. I know someone here can save me from the dreaded face-to-face with at&t!!!!
Edit: Also when i got the phone i noticed a line of dead pixels on the left side very hard to see unless u look closely think i could get the phone replaced by using this as my excuse. idk what to say to AT&T if i do have to return. But i really hope not ive never ever had such problems flashing anyphone.
Please do not double post. You already asked (correctly) in the Apex sticky. No need to start another separate thread.
I posted both places because my problem may or may not be related to Apex. If Apex has nothing todo with my problem then i have correctly posted here.
Edit: Im trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone

Finally shed me some light. Thats awsome dude thanks. I made my jig exactly how they make theres it wont work. The only thing i can think is im touching the wrong pins. I touch the top and bottom pins on the micro usb closest to the 3.5mm headphone jack???
It takes allot of trail and error and if the resistance is not right it won't work. purchase one from somewhere, search captivate usb jig on youtube, should find a source

Thanks again.
You'll need to build a new jig or buy one(Moiletechvideos is what I would suggest), because if you can't get into download mode then you cannot be helped any further. And Miami_Son is right, you're not exempt from the rules. I realize it can be frustrating if something goes wrong, but you need to just cast that aside for the time being.

First, what is your phones revision ( on the back of phone, like 1008 ,1101 etc. ) i would just start over. Get that

I appreciate you taking your time to help. My phone is the SGH-I897 i could still use the 3 button combo before Odin and recovery but after i ran odin thats when everything got really jacked up now i cant get into recovery or download i think im not doing this jig thing right but if im correct i have a striped usb plug. With the screen facing down i have three prongs on the bottom and two on the top i touch the far right prongs top and bottom and hold for about 10 seconds. Thanks dude seriously I just got this phone and loved it but got tired of at&t bloating my phone with bs that eats my memory.

Does your buddies JIG work just fine in other phones? If so you may have a short in pin 4 or 5 of your USB port. Are you able to issue the "adb reboot download" command when the phone is bootlooping? I have ADB command videos on youtube just search for them for help on that. Either way if you can't get it resolved with any conventional methods, I can restore the phone using advanced JTAG just PM me for info.

Mobiletechvideos has one for 8 bucks and ships in couple days. They work wonders. The A10 toolbox/ captivate toolbox. Worka great, just search google and. Install it. Its got everything youll need packed inside. EX: it comes with the drivers, odin1click and 3buttonfix odin ( which youll need to do)
It also comes with the pda and tar files youll need, it also lets you root it but i suggest the one click root for captivate, get all that done first and well go from there.

hey guys i searched and havent really found anything that matched quite what i had going on so here we go... I was 95 percent through flashing the ICS rom it got through the hboot section and rebooted.. on the screen i saw two arrows in circular form above a phone .. and something was definitely being downloaded.. then the phone went black, doesnt go into hboot, doesnt a charging light when plugged in , but is picked up by the computer, ie. connection noise. Im in no way a noob at flashing roms , but something is definitely wrong with my phone.. Any ideas? It was charged full battery by the way.. it does glow in a dull light when i push volume down and power, or power alone...
Your phone indeed seems to be bricked. The identification noise from the computer may just mean that your USB is receiving power from the battery.
When my friend had a similar problem with his Amaze, he went to the HTC service center and they replaced his phone after keeping it for 4 days
So taking it to bestbuy to get it serviced is probably the only alternative, since its insured through them... lol just my luck

Not sure why you keep posting it's not safe. I think I've seen like 3 people who've screwed it up out of probably 100+ installs. PirateGhost has released an ICS RUU which is completely noob proof so even unrooted users can get some ICS love before the OTA update.
As far as im concerned each one of us is responsible for what happens to our phones, warnings are put for a reason.. ive jailbroken, rooted the hardest of phones .. it was just my time for the inevitable to happen. I get my phone back in three days and you can be sure ill be back here again doing crazy rooty stuff to my phone no rom or dev should be held responsible for what ive done ..

Saying something is noob proof will inevitably prove that some where some noob will sow its not noob proof. I'll admit there were a few moments of panic when I flashed the zip method pg released. When that happened I just breathed deep and took my time and everything worked great in the end. I personally feel that what the devs have put out there is fairly safe as long as the directions are followed exactly.

I don't have the money to buy tons of new devices....its about knowing ur own limitations...do not criticise a devs hard work when it is proven to work...no its defenitly not idiot proof but it is very easy...I've done it to 3 phones already with no problems...the devs are not responsible for bricked phones

yea i must say it was a hundreed percent my fault in bricking my device so im not mad at anyone..and as far as the money goes its not a super big deal..i always make more o and btw im gonna be getting my replacement today and im gonna try this all again aft6er reading everything again and again and agian o and again lol
So, the phone is bricked. I have the same problem as the OP. I Lost access to Hboot while flashing ICS. I accidently sent it to recovery after Hboot update...and it never recovered LOL. Anyone know a good de-bricking service or know how much it will cost if I send it back to HTC or AT&t to fix it? I bought mine at the AT&T store, so no protection plan. I'm gonna get another device anyway (from Best Buy this time), but it would be great to have the Vivid back as a backup.
I bricked my phone Sunday night, still not 100% sure what I did wrong but it did what yours is doing now. I simply called the AT&T exchange by mail and used the factory warranty. Granted I guess there is a slight chance they could find out it was rooted (if they can somehow get it to recover or even turn on) but it got me a replacement... Food for thought.
Btw I got the new one and used the RUU and it worked seamlessly.

I did the same thing, selected recovery right after successful HBoot update. Then afterwards, each and every restart shows searching sd card with a black background. After several attempts of pulling battery, reinsert and power button + vol down, I was able to get back into HBoot. From there I immediately flash recovery through fastboot and now am happily on ICS.
If you did the same and phone boots up with the searching sd screen, there is a shot of bring it back.

Fraid it doesn't search for anything. I posted in the threads and tried everything I could think of and everything that was suggested. Though there isn't much you can do besides keep removing the battery and trying vol dn + pwr. Just a black screen.
Just a few things I tried (removed battery each time)- vol down + power (no sd card in) = blank black screen
vol down + power (with sd card and PH39IMG file) = blank black screen
vol down + power > boots to blank black screen, wait few seconds > press power button (like I'm going to fastboot) > plug into computer > type fastboot command into command prompt = command prompt says waiting for device
I always read the directions and threads a bunch of times before doing anything. Did lots of reading, google-ing, and searching. Fraid it bit the dust. I appreciate the help though. This is the first device snafu I've had. I've never had to send a phone in for any kind of warrantee work before. Hence my question above about getting it fixed.
Just in case, if it were to boot to that screen, what would I want to do? Just the PH39IMG? Or is there some other procedure?

Who TOLD you to flash the phone??? When I got my first android phone, a Samsung Fascinate, I LOVED the phone but nervous AS HELL that I would brick the phone. And I read, and read, and REREAD, trying to make sure I understood everything so that when I went looking for help, I at least could say, "Yes, I already tried this, this, and this".
I think the key thing to all of this is in two-fold - one, as someone stated before, this is a developer's forum. If you work on your car, and forgot to put oil in it, are you going to blame your mechanic? If you change your brakes and did not do something correctly, causing an accident, are you going to blame the car manufacturer??? Two, it states in MANY places, before you post, READ, READ, READ. It was actually ADVISED to NOT FLASH this ROM...
From this point forward, it almost seems as if there needs to be a waiver release to download roms, stating you will not ridicule nor torment the developers. And though I had heard about it but never seen it before, as I am on my 4th Android phone, there definitely are a few VERY NOTICEABLE disrespectful and ungrateful individuals in this forum. If you were my kid, and acted like that to me for something I GAVE YOU, I would do the same as PG - TAKE IT WAY and forget you.
Would love to know how many people have bricked their notes. Is it just an odd few or are there 100s.Has anyone had repairs ,unbricked or replaced by their carrier?
I too would like to know this.
Ok
Soft brick? I am sure there are tons, me included, a proper brick brick after which you use the phone for a coaster, don't think so many, though I have one of those too (shattered display).
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was nearly impossible to brick an Android phone? When I was learning to flash and so on with my SGS, I certainly bollocked it up a lot of times (ah... misadventures with using incorrect files...). I have always been able one way or another been able to get back in and mend the damage.
With the Note, Download mode is hardwired in so I thought it would be difficult indeed to properly brick it. That said, I haven't done much with the SGN yet since it's my daily device and I leave it alone. (@torqu3e, I don't think shattered screens count towards the typical definition of 'bricked' do they? I thought it was a software f-up )
When someone says brick, I think of a phone that just won't turn on and is completely useless...but in many people's cases recently, the partition tables have been messed up and the phone is as good as useless. It no longer holds its function as an Android device. So yes, add me to the list of "bricked" Notes out there.
I got a hard brick! :-( It's in the shop..

Sharing wat you did to brick your phone might help others prevent it.This is not only to you but to all who's gonna report here....
I was talking more about bricking from flashing that dodgy ics ROM.Anyone unbricked or had it fixed under warranty.
Add me to the list. I bricked when I flashed a kernel that messed up the partition tables. Its at the service now.
one more to the list
i need to sent mine to the US
I faced a soft brick when i was flashing ics betas (mobile to pc screen) but fixed it by flashing stock rom then flashed back ics!

In ODIN while trying to flash CF-Root ICS progress bar froze on Factoryfs flash and after 30 minutes I unplugged it. Phone at this point wont restart turn on or anything. Didn't respond to JIG to go into download mode so I took it to a service center in Southern California. They tried fixing it with JTAG and it didn't respond. It is Kernel related. I got some sort of good news today from the service center that they may have found a solution and are receiving a new tool to do the trick. I am crossing my fingers and waiting for the next phone call from them that if they could get my phone up and running again!!

Thats good news just hope they dont read this thread.Lets see if you get charged or they fix for free under warranty.
Hey guys,
So I'm planning on buying a Captivate used, the problem is that the phone will not boot. The seller says that it will go to Download and Recovery menu so I'm thinking this will still work.
Any ideas on what state this is and if it's salvageable? In need for a new phone so I'd like to get the Captivate at a good price.
Thanks a lot!
Hi, the phone is still very salvageable. If the imei is corrupted then the phone wont be much fun unless you get that repaired but I love my cappy, very fun to modify. I guess it would help asking whoever what happened when the phone went all crazy.

Thanks for the response, I missed something that he said. So it does boot up, goes past the S logo (boot sequence) but then stops at a black screen.
It stopped working after CM7 was installed and he reset the phone from boot recovery to factory settings.
This is easy to restore via odin. Should take you 10 minutes.

just download and flash any Odin odin click package with computer running windows and you will get the captivate running
I got mine because the owner was not able to enable installation of non market apps.
Thanks for the support. I think I'm going to buy this! Any guides on how to restore a Rogers i896 Captivate with Odin?
Just to add, the oneclicks, specifically the ones with bootloaders be careful using, a bootloader botch will permanently black screen your phone and a Jtag is the only fix. As for guides, just read the hell out of the captivate section in xda, specifically for Rogers users, go into the development section, find Trusselo and his page on the i896, read that, should get you by.

jtag is NOT the only fix and is antiquated on this device thanks to Adam outler.
The captivate was the first device that the unbrickable mod was perfected on, it fixes a brick like jtag would, BUT if you were to brick again, its the exact same repair process with jtag, with UBM however once the hardware modification is made its a simple process of running the resurrector program on your pc and flashing new bootloaders onto the phone, the user can do that Themself over and over without having to send it in again.
lol, ok ok, you are right, however, i was just making the notion that if something really goes bad on a flash, especially if you just bought a used phone, you wouldn't want to send it away for the unbrickable mod or connexion2005 Jtagging as soon as you thought you were going to fix it.
From the land of defrag
Connexion2005 also offers unbrickable mod at mobiletechvideos
I get your point, just informing the newcomer
Cool, I didn't know that. I'd still prefer jtag, Joshs Kung fu is strong. Never hard bricked the phone yet, running a kk4 build, wont worry about bootloaders again. waiting for the S3 for ICS.

Thanks for all the input but you've got no idea how overwhelming this is for me. I need a new phone and this is coming at a cheap price, you think it's worth it for $80? What are your opinions on this phone?
yes, i think 80 bucks is a good deal. The captivate is a fun phone to use. call quality is good, battery life is great, screen is bright. once again, i love my cappy.

I got the phone for $70! But when I try to reflash to stock, Odin will not detect my phone...
I'm really new to this stuff so I have no idea what to do next?
Thanks
read this
Got everything to work with Odin but after a reflash of stock I still got the same blank blac screen after the boot sequence "Galaxy S" logo
What stock firmware are you flashing?
Rogers i896 2.2. The phone wasn't on 2.3 yet.
So confused. The thing boots and all but just wont get passed that blak screen... I've reflashed to stock 2.2 at least 10 times to no avail.
I can go into download mode and recovery mode so I don't think I need a jig unless there is something it does that I'm unaware of.
Any thoughts on what's going on?
