[Q] How to get to Recovery - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i bought this rooted int'l note off of craigslist and it had a darkynote rom on it. I tried the power+home+vol down but it just goes to download mode even if its not connected to the pc. I went into Rom Manager and hit reboot into recovery and it worked and i was able to flash the RoMow ICS rom and now it wont let me boot into recovery from there. I tried market apps to boot, but it says that my phone is not rooted. I gave Super user permissions and everything. Last thing i tried was rooting again using the method outlined in the development thread, but it got stuck and i figure that it is because i am running ICS and not gingerbread.
Can anyone give me some help on if i am trying to boot into recovery the right way or if you have a solution?
Thanks alot

Try power button, home and volume up.

Or use the Terminal application and type;
reboot recovery
Or, plug it into a PC with the SDK installed and type;
adb reboot recovery
Or, what Stoney said.

Thanks! The vol up+Home+Power worked.
Now im having another issue though:
I tried backing up and it got stuck when it was almost done,
same with flashing any roms and restoring from a backup... Any ideas, or should post a new thread?

Look, stop doing anything else with your RoMow ICS, because you didn't install it properly, and have a partial root as a consequence. This is a known issue: you have a semi-functional rom right now, and doing a backup of it is of no use to you.
Do the following:
1. download AbyssNote 3.9 kernel from HERE | MIRROR. It's a flashable zip.
2. put this zip on your SD Card (take out your SD card and paste the zip from your PC via a card reader if no other option is possible)
3. power off your phone
4. boot into recovery (Volume up + Home + Power)
5. chose 'install zip from SD Card'
6. navigate to your Abyss kernel zip and flash it
7. go back to the Recovery start menu
8. go to advanced/reboot recovery <--- this will reboot the phone directly to recovery
9. you will discover that you now have Hyperdroid Redpill Recovery - it comes with the Abyss kernel - it's pretty much the same thing as CWMR
10. wipe cache, dalvik, do your factory reset
11. flash any GB rom you fancy or do a GB restore if you have one

thanks so much fro your help. I had no idea that i had a partial root. I will try this when i get home. Will i have to do this with every rom i flash (flash rom then kernal) or is it just this rom?

Alright so i followed the steps and i got the red recovery and flashed the romow rom again. I went back to recovery to flash the mms fix and it went back to the blue clockworkmod recovery and once again it wont let me flash anything

I think said
11. flash any GB rom you fancy or do a GB restore if you have one
didn't I? Emphasis was on GB rom, as in Gingerbread, not ICS.
Every time you want to flash your first ICS rom, you must start from a gingerbread one.
It's no good trying to flash ICS over a botched ICS, it will get you nowhere.

obviously, there are steps you are not following quite well. the instructions above were quite very specific.
if i were you, i'd reinstall abyss 3.9, and reinstall a stock, rootable rom and start from scratch. or stick with stock.

[Q] Trying to flash Serendipity 6.3...

I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?
flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want
The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now
bad download, re-download rom.
May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsafJ-9uRqk
I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either
Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.
followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I did run TB and I had originally flashed up to froyo (took me all night one night) and then went through the process I explained and hit the dead end. I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?

2) quick flash black screen
3) AT&T white screen again
4) a very quick list of text from what looks like cwm but too fast to read
5) repeats
Any ideas what went wrong?
I do have my phone back up and running but on Gingerbread via One Click K12 with Boogs kernel now. Had to use my home made jig to get into download mode...
Boot into recovery and flash the Glitch V14 Kernel first then CM9. It should fix that problem.

thanks for the reply, i'll give that a try once i get back to cm7
No, you just need to flash the ROM twice as the first flash sets the new partition layout and boot.img(kernel for MTD ROMs). Wipe EVERYTHING but SD card and boot.img in mounts and storage. Then flash again and flash GAPPS without rebooting!
hmmmmmmm, my memory is for crap, but as i recall once the rom flashed the first time the phone tried to reboot and went into what i would think would be called a boot loop. i wasn't able to boot into recovery to flash the 2nd time even if i knew to do that...
as i said though, i may be wrong.
To get out of the bootloop I usually do a battery pull and then do the 3 button combo to get to recovery and flash the second time
ok, i'm up and running although i thought at first something had screwed up again. Since i was coming from stock/rooted gb i used these instructions this time:
- First time flashing ICS to your Captivate (or coming from another ROM)?
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot into Recovery using 3-button-combo
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon

after first install i went right into the bootloop i described in my first post except this time it was the cm screen twice instead of the at&t. I used the 3 button hold to see if it would go into recovery, and it did
On b-eock's suggestion i then flashed the rom again...this time i got to the screen with all the tiles rotating across the screen, but after a few min i got an "encription" error and message that the process was intrupted and i had to do a factory reset... i click "ok" to see what happened and on the next boot i was up and running
Thank you gentlemen for the assistance

[Q] ICS on Rooted Captivate (stock 2.3.5)

First off i am kind of a noob and haven't flashed any rom ext.
I have a rooted captivate on stock 2.3.5 and wanted to know how to get ICS.
Any advice on the easiest way to do this or ROMs that you recommend would be great
Thanks
If you have cwm...ask you need to do is, factory reset and format /system in recovery and flash the ROM, when that's done it'll probably boot back into recovery (which will probably look different because its the ics kernel recovery) and flash the Rom once more, and you're done.
Thanks, but what is cwm and how do I get the ics rom on my phone
Also how do I back up the phone so I don't lose all of my data?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
Cwm= clockwork mod recovery.
How did you root, a custom kernel swap? If so that's got cwm.
you can transfer the ROM via usb...or download it directly to your phone.
backup your contacts to your gmail and/or Sim card (i do both)
Download and run titanium backup to backup your apps.

First, back everything up like studa recommended. If you are not on a custom kernel, download the speedmod kernel and odin in my attachments. Then download an ICS rom that you like. Put the rom on your phone. Open Odin on your computer, and select the speedmod kernel in the PDA section. Put your phone into download mode and flash the kernel. After the flash is done and your phone reboots, remove your battery to turn off your phone. Reboot into recovery and navigate to install zip/install custom zip and navigate to your chosen rom. After it installs, install it again from the new ICS recovery screen (it's probably different colored). Then, reboot your device and wait a few minutes for your rom to start. Afterwards, the apps, contacts, etc. can be restored.

Boot Loop after flashing stock

I was recently using Stunner ICS but decided I wanted to go back to stock and start over. I downloaded the stock N7000XXKJ4_N7000OXXKJ4 firmware and installed it through odin. I did not receive any errors on the phone or on my PC. But now it seems like my phone is stuck in a boot loop. It just keeps showing the samsung boot animation over and over. I used the download jig to get into download mode and tried redoing the firmware twice already with no luck. One thing I did notice is that the jig is no longer resetting the binary counter. Does anyone have any other ideas or is my phone possibly bricked?
This is supposed to be in Q& A section... Anyways... Did you try wipe?

What worked for me having the same problem recently is go to Recovery mode (Volume up + home + power) and you'll see this funny kinda recovery, not at all CWM Do a data wipe/factory reset and then reboot.
Same thing happened with me yesterday, wipe in recovery fixed the problem

Thank you guys. I was beginning to freak out. I was trying to do the recovery menu but couldn't get it to work. I thought the recovery menu was also hosed but I had the wrong buttons. All is good now! thank you so much!
First thing you need to do if you want to get back GB, flash abyss 3.9 redpill kernel.
After that flash GB rom.

Hanging at Samsung logo; can't boot into recovery; am I bricked???
Hi guys...
I've been semi bricked for about 18 hours now. And it's starting to look like it's a full-brick.
I had the latest Gingerbread ROCKET ROM on my Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000, with the latest Franco kernel in place.
I thought I'd give the ICS version of ROCKET ROM a go. Flashed Abyss4.2 kernel without any hassles. Used 'advanced' to boot into recovery. Did my various wipes. Flashed the ICS Rocket Rom zip. And got caught up in the recurring boot-up, mostly upgrade, run, reboot cycle that's been described in many places.
Didn't panic.
Booted into recovery again, and flashed the ICS Rocket Rom again.
But this time, it wouldn't go past the SAMSUNG logo.
Still, I could boot into recovery.
Which I did.
And I tried to restore my Gingerbread build from Nandroid.
Tried it. But it hung on the Samsung logo again.
With one key difference... Now, no matter how much I try, I can't boot into recovery.
I *CAN* boot into 'download' mode. So I've used PC Odin to try and inject a rooted Gingerbread rom into the phone.
The instructions tell me to wait for the phone to reboot twice. Sadly, it tries its first reboot, and doesn't get past the Samsung logo. And that's where it hangs. No recovery mode either.
What shall I do??? Oh, woe is me. Etcetera.

UPDATE
--------------------------------------------------------
I found a version of Abyss 4.2 kernel in tar format. I flashed it via PC ODIN, and I now seem to have a phone that can boot again.
Not much more to report at the moment, cos the battery is on about 3%, so I'm charging it now before delving further. Will give more feedback once the battery's up and running again.
Here's a link to the Abyss file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1072122&d=1337500067
I tried all of this, was on stock ICS 4.0.3 and had it rooted.
I tried to restore a backup which was sadly on GB and then the restore of /data failed
I then tried to flash paranoid custom rom and it was successful but the phone never went any further than SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE GT-N7000 logo
I then Flashed a direct rootable stock rom via PC odin and all was well but the phone would never go any further than the logo before mentioned
I tried flashing AbyssNote kernel via pc odin but the CWM recovery menu kept on rebooting hence leaving me with not particular choice to select
Tried wiping data, cache mem, dalvik cache but no use and now i am on stock recovery menu. please help me out
i have this Samsung i9220 china i try to flash upgrade the firmware with Odin3 v1.85 . i got stock phone can't power non recover modem non booting logo , does anyone have any ideas ?

Galaxy note stuck at boot and not installing any other rom

i have a problem with my galaxy note, i was using isc stunner rom and everything was working fine. My battery got drained and the powered off, so i charged it and turned it on , the phone got stuck on the bootscreen. It does not boot up, so i tried to reflash the same rom but didnt work, i wiped my memory card but no luck. Now whenever i try to flash a rom cwm gets stuck on installing update. Please help me and reply asap!
go to download mode and flash a stock kernel. search in this forum how to do that.
Take out the external SD card
download AbyssNote 4.2 kernel and place it on your external SD Card
Also download the Rom you want to install and put it on your external SD card.
reboot to CWMR
go to install a zip from SD card --> select AbyssNote 4.2 zip and flash it
go back to CWMR's root menu --> advanced --> reboot recovery
you'll find yourself in AbyssNote's Touch Recovery
factory reset --> wipe cache --> wipe dalvik
flash the Rom of your choice
I tried to flash abyssnote kernel but when i flash it the installation is stuck on 'Installing update' and it just stays there and never progresses in any way.
so yeah whenever i flash the kernel im stuck on 'installing update'
any fix for this bros?
You lost root mate..
There is a thread with "Stock Prerooted GB ROMs", go there and download any one and flash it using PC Odin..if flashing with PC Odin succeded but yo0 still get bootloop reboot to recovery and do a factory reset/data wipe, it'll boot without issues
Then go to Chainfire's thread and get the CF Root kernel for the ROM you just flashed, because the prerooted ROMs don't have CWM recovery..fladh that kernel using "already rooted.bat" method described in post #2 in Chainfire's thread..
You'll end up with stock rooted GB and CWM recovery..from there you choose what you eant to do
probably best starting from scratch again and installing a gb from via odin

I have a similar problem. After installing Stunner ROM on my note, it work for a bit, but then I don't remember what I did, it is now stuck on boot screen. I can't do anything except boot into recovery.
Did I lose root? How exactly can I fix it. I read the post you referred to, but I can't do anything when I execute Odin with my Gnote N7000 connected to my PC. Can you tell me how exactly I have to do? Please provide the exact link for any software I need to download.

Thank you! Yes now I have communication to the phone using Odin! ) But I 'm still trying to figure out what exactly I need to do to get back on stock GB and then go from there (ie. what file(s) I need to flash back to stock GB. My original GB version was 2.3.6). If you know, could you please provide me the link(s) to download those files. I did tried "wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache" in recovery as the other gentleman suggested but did not work. So I guess I do need to flash back to GB .
Thanks a million

I was in a boot loop recently. I just flashed a stock GB rom via PC Odin, and reset to factory/wipe cache in stock recovery. Booted up after that. Important part is get GB on there and do the resets. Then you can worry about root, etc.

This is the thread with the pre rooted GB roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
Though it doesn't really matter which one you choose (as long as it has your preferred language code in it), i can imagine that you want to do it 'the right way'.
Take a look over here to maybe get it more clear for you:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-N7000&r=-1#modelsa
The roms mentioned on sammobile are also in this thread:

this one btw contains much more useful information.

Thank you so much!, bro. Now that I 'm clear I just picked a rom from 'bodivas's post' and re-flashed it back to stock and everything works like a champ now! Just didn't know i could have used any of those - thought I had to match exactly the specific versions of kernel/baseband/country etc. etc.. hahaha.... Next I 'll work on the ICS again. And thanks & credit for everyone who have helped.
