[Q] Samsung keypad handwriting on ICS - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to install the samsung keypad on ICS?
I tried to restore a version of the keyboard using titanium backup. I also tried copying the apk I had in Gingerbread by using root explorer and pasting the apk in /system/app/, and update the permissions to rw-r--r-- (same as other apps).
I am mostly after the handwriting recognition built in the keyboard. I am using go keyboard at the moment, but it seems the handwriting recognition is limited to chinese only.

[GUIDE]Backup Swype dictionary without Swype app (for upgrade)

So, as many of us know, most ROMs include different, whether entirely or only slightly, versions of swype. In my experience, I have far fewer swype glitches when I don't install my previous version of swype over the ROMs native w/ Titanium.
But, if I don't install it with Titanium, I lose my User Dictionary!!!!
Well, there are two ways about it: With Titanium Backup, or manually
Titanium
With Titanium backup, the backup procedure resumes as normal.
But, when you restore all apps and system data, make sure to uncheck swype, then proceed.
Once the restoration process is completed, once more go to Batch>restore apps and system data
At the top of this screen, you'll see 3 radio buttons : All Apps +Data, All Apps No data, All Data no Apps
Select All Data no Apps
Restore all, with swype checked.
User dictionary should now be in place and work with the installed version of swype
Manually (my preferred method, but more advanced):
Be familiar with ABD commands and using ADB!!! If you are not, I would recommend the Titanium method.
In command prompt, type the following : adb shell
Within shell, type the following: su
Then: cp -r /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod/ /sdcard/
Your swype dictionary is now backed up to your SD card in folder /com.swype.android.inputmethod
To restore, make sure all of your Titanium backups have ran (Except for, obviously, don't install swype over the version included in the ROM)
In command prompt type: adb shell
Then: su
Then: cp -r /sdcard/com.swype.android.inputmethod /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod
Kill swype (select different input method) then relaunch it and your User Dictionary should be loaded.

Smith
Thanks, this has been driving me nuts.
[No thanks button, so I posted it]
thanks for this useful info...
Thank you so much .... this is gonna be really helpful...
are there any commands that you could do this with an installer script for a ROM? such as copy the user dictionary to the SDcard with the installer script then maybe an if doesnt exist statement in init.d to copy the backup version on boot

You can't use your old Swype dictionary for the new Swype beta. You have to start over. (According to the Swype website)
Edit: unless some clever individual has come up with a workaround that I'm not aware of.
Backup of Swype dictionary for Un-rooted SGS2 T-Mobile
Pardon my ignorance but is there a way to backup the Swype dictionary and potentially be able to restore it back to my SGS2 if I do a factory reset?
Am avoiding having to root my phone if all possible since I really have no need for a rooted phone.
Thanks on advance for any feedbacks.
Regards.
Samsung Galaxy S2 with T-Mobile T989
ICS firmware 4.0.4
Any particular permissions required on the directory for this to work? I've restored the folder successfully, but it's not restoring my dictionary.

Other keyboards in AN3.0

Sorry for the post here, but I'm not allowed to post on the actual thread because I just created my account...
I used Auto-Nooter 3.0.0 to root my NC. As others have posted in the AN3.0 thread, the gingerbread keyboard, while supposedly installed, doesn't work when chosen.
I installed Shapewriter instead, and enabled the keyboard, but when I go to My Nook Tools, it is not available as a choice to switch to. Is this just not possible or am I missing a step?
Thanks!
Gingerbread keyboard won't work for me either. I'm on 3.0 also.
The stock NC software can't use keyboards that are installed as normal apps; they must be installed as system apps. The easy way to do that is to download and install the keyboard as usual, then use something like Root Explorer to copy the keyboard's APK file from /data/app to /system/app and run the APK from there to install it again as a system app.

Current spec: Insanity Rom with stock kernel
cant get swype on Insanity rom?
Need you to help you onthis asap please
I need this **** fixed badly, thanks
Did you try using Swype Installer?
Uninstalling swype generally goes this way:
with some explorer able of browsing root:
- dig into system/app and delete swype.apk
- dig into system/lib and delete libswype (and anything with swype in the name)
Go to http://beta.swype.com/ and register or login. Follow the instructions, it will envolve opening a link in your phone, downloading swype installer, picking the correct version of swype for you and let it work it's magic. You'll have swype installed by the end of it. Some kind of fast wireless access on your phone is very recomended.
Whenever i had swype installing problems, the trick was always deleting libswype files before trying a new install.
The only thing against this method is that you'll get the latest swype available. Which i believe it works far worse than the older ones available in any smasung stock rom (for my language, at least)
swype install
thats the 1 mate, we got it working, superb
now this sh*t is workin again

Any tips on how to install swype beta?

I desperately miss swype... even with this larger keyboard, I can type faster on my phone because it has swype.
Anyway, I have followed the directions for installing some Google apps without root, and I side loaded dropbox successfully. I am waiting / hoping for a backup method before I try rooting, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has succeeded in installing swype on their device, root or no?

Installing swype has crossed my mind, but I have not done it yet on the KFHD. I did it with the KF 1st gen and it required rooting and it could get a little messy but once it was up and running, it wasn't a problem. I actually used SlideIT keyboard but right now the stock keyboard is a little pleasing so I haven't switched.
Sideloading doesn't work on keyboards, a rom might be necessary

All you have to do is ask. The method I found was on another board and I don't like to step on toes by cross referencing on another board.
I am revising this post on how I got swype beta installed and working on KFHD, the original KF method is not working since amazon locked out the ability to swap keyboards. This requires your device to be rooted
1) Sign up for Swype Beta on their website and download their installer on your KFHD.
2) Install the Installer APK and Log in
3) Select your Beta version and download
4) Install swype
5) Go to data/apps and move swype apk to system/apps and make sure permissions are rw-r-r
6) Install NookColorTools_0.2.apk found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868366 Link courtesy of timurg
6) Reboot
7) Open NookColorTools and you will be able to select your keyboard. IF you keep getting a Force Close message, just dismiss, go back to system/apps and reinstall swype and force close should stop
8) Enjoy
I was also able to get this method to work with SlideIT keyboard.
So I installed swype beta, as well as nook tools... but when I try to enable swype in its app, it takes me to the default screen for co figuring the built in keyboard. The keyboard selection button in nook tools only lists the default option. Do I need to move the swype apk to system/apps ? If so, can anyone recommend a file manager that will allow me to access that dir without root?
Thanks!

Yes, you have to move apk to the system folder. And no, you can't do this without root.

I did a few installs of swype trying to figure out the cleanest install, as you don't need to move any lib files in your linked post and even though it appeared all the files were removed for another clean install, it still showed up without being in my system/app folder. I will fix my post.
Swype Beta has closed
So I rooted my device in order to try again to get Swype installed. I followed your instructions, however immediately after enabling Swype Beta in the Nook color tools, I get a message that Swype Beta has closed. This repeats every few seconds. Is this the force close error you mentioned? What do you mean by "go back to system/apps and reinstall swype"? I tried deleting the swype-input apk from system/apps and reinstalling the swype beta apk, but it led to the same result. Any advice?
Nevermind -- figured it out
OK, so I tried moving the *installer* apk to system/app (using RootExplorer), then launching said apk (using file expert). Enabled swype in nook color tools and now it's working! hurray!
So, I did install Swype and several other keyboards to check. They all work good in portrait mode. But in landscape mode, the navigation bar closes a part of keyboard. The same happens to all keyboards I tried: Swype, Go keyboard, Swift keyboard. Did Anybody had the same problem?

Yes, I have the same problem. As a partial solution - Smart Keyboard Pro has an option to show arrows on the left edge, so the navigational panel closes arrows and not interferes with the letter block of keyboard.
Swype Default from Swype Installer
Got it installed thanks for the tips! The odd thing is when I downloaded the Swype installer and installed it, it gave me the option right from the Swype page to set as default keyboard and set preferences. I installed Nook Tools before I downloaded Swype (I obviously can't follow directions:laugh, but didn't need to go into it to set the keyboard. Like I said the option to set as default keyboard was in the Swype installer app. Works great - vastly improves my chances of sticking with the KFHD!
I have only tried it in Portrait mode, so can't comment on the Landscape issues (I use my KFHD in Portrait mode about 90% of the time).

Registered just to say THANK YOU! :good:
It all worked perfectly for me, thank you!
Anyone worked out how to fix the hidden part of the keyboard in landscape view?
Thanks!
I got Swype working by installing it then using titanium backup to convert it to system app. I then used nook color tools to choose it as the keyboard. No problems. Well, except for the landscape issue.
