Build.prop tweak to spoof a tablet? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to be able to install tablet optimized applications on my touch pad, but they are obviously shown as not compatible as its already being spoofed as a Galaxy S2 due to similar hardware. Is there a tablet we can spoof with identical specs that will let us install tablet apps on the touch pad?
Thanks!!

If you feel like you must change your device by the build.prop (aside from a few Gameloft games, what's the point?), you might consider changing it to the HTC Jetstream. Same CPU/GPU combo as the Touchpad, only major difference is that the Touchpad has a different screen resolution and no cellular connection.
BTW, Galaxy S2 has absolutely nothing in common with the Touchpad, exynos != snapdragon.

The Pantech Element would be a good device. Its a tablet offered by At&t with Honeycomb, 1024x768 resolution and the same GPU/CPU that the Touchpad has. Problem is I can't find the build.prop anywhere.

Or any tablet optimized versions or any app on the market... try downloading CNN tablet edition... you can only get phone apps.
At this point I'd like any tablets build.prop device info so I can go get the apps I want then switch back.

Now for the actual build.prop info... have you checked around for a Pantech forum somewhere? Maybe you could ask someone there to open the file system and tell you what to key in. Its not a complex file, just text.

this worked for me.. now tablet apps show up. I monkey'd with a few different options so I can't recall if I had to wipe store date cache or not to get it to recognize the change...

That is the Galaxy S2 which the OP already has. Strange. Also it doesn't really matter if the specs of the tablet you change it to are different.
You could try GT-P7500 which is the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Not sure if that will help. Before you try, have you tried clearing market data? Mine shows tablet apps even though the build.prop says GT-19100.

Netflix for android

So it appears that Netflix has finally been released for us, except it is currently not compatible with our phones. It seems to currently only be available for 2.3 devices and 1 other 2.2 phone. Can someone with cm7 running see if they can download this and share a link. Its free so it shouldn't be considered warez
I've been KANGBANGED!!!!!

I just flashed jt's latest release, and it is not in the market but I got it from a site and installed it. logged in tried to play something and it just says your device is not supported.
Confirmed over in the Nook forum that a Build.prop spoof is all that is needed. I'm at work but anyone care to try and post your results?

Tried the build prop by pass.
Downloaded the current one off the market. App closes after sign in. But u don't get the unsupported device error.
Seems like it requires gingerbread.

I didn't copy the whole build prop.
Just from the model to brand samsung.
That causes unsupported device error.
And when signing in closes app as well.

And for those who asked, I can download it just fine with Kaos's CM7, but it just says it's not supported. Need to bypass or spoof or something. From what I've read in the past netflix is requiring DRM support in the processors or something, I don't know. I'm not the biggest developer so I couldn't tell ya, just passing along what I read. I know the snapdragons have DRM Keys in the processor, that's why they are the first to get it. I think the TI OMAP Does too, so motorola phones will probably be next. I have no idea of our hummingbird does. But seeing how the Nexus S has it, if our processor doesn't then odds are something in gingerbread supports it, emulation or something? I don't know, I'm not a dev.
Mostly everyone has pretty much agreed that this is probably a software limitation, as it isn't limited by carrier or processor (Nexus S & Moto Droids), as we believed to be the case.

Well technically everything is a software issue when you get down to it. It's what controls the hardware.
Tried the build.prop file edit and it still gets the device not supported block.
Not sure what it is but, I'll keep looking.
btw, have latest apk and flash 10.3.
No dice
I tried the build.prop spoof and I get to the sign-in screen just fine, but then it crashes after I enter my username/password.
I did the build.prop edit (to a HTC Vision) and got the video to open without getting the "device not supported" error. Edit: I had to use Root Explorer to edit the file, Astro wouldn't save the changes to build.prop
Once the video opened it played one second of audio and then got a f/c. I'm running Jt's CM7 alpha v3 - so it might be similar to the other video codec issues with the ROM?
No go on community rom with nexus s build prop
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
I changed my build.prop to show that I have an incredible but then it froze on video playback. I think when streaming it is checking for DRM keys. Similar to how dish network does, sound is not encrypted but video probably is? I think it's going to need more than a simple build.prop hack.
But as I said in my last post, I'm not a developer. We can spoof all day but without the keys or some sort of DRM emulation I don't think we're going to get video.
Modified the build.prop, which allowed me to install it from the market, but closes after sign -in.
Will try to post a logcat later, if there is any developer interest.

[Q] Getting 9mm to run on touchpad

I have been hitting a roadblock with trying to get 9mm to run on my touchpad.
So far I have been working from the instructions here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/7709-gameloft-compatibility-thread-with-working-version-s/
There is a copy on XDA as well but they both do the same thing. Normally I get all pink/red textures. Using the instructions I get all black/white textures.
According to everything I can find the setup listed "should" work, but it does not for me. I think I am missing some steps, but trying to search for "9mm" does not come up with much.
I see mention about getting the Tegra version of the game but nobody says how to do this. I assume it has to do with an edit to build.prop but so far the exact edit is something I cannot find.
Thanks
I have the same issues. I was able to get rid of the pink and actually get the correct graphics. The game starts to go black after the intro though. I wonder if getting the full version of chainfire would help. Any suggestions?
Sent from my GT-i9100 using Tapatalk
I am running the full version and have had no luck at all. For me I get black textures for everything on the Nvidia plugin. Pink for every other setting.
I have seen it listed as working but so far nobody will actually post how they got it to work.
At least I only invested .99 . Not a huge loss if I cant get it running.
Ok, I got a bit closer last night in getting this running. I can now watch the opening movie without any texture distortion but after that the game locks up. Sound still plays fine.
Oddly my live wallpaper also starts crashing, making me wonder if I am hitting a memory cap. I do run V6 supercharger so I can make adjustments to the limits.
What I did, and it is based on posts linked in the original thread and some serious expiramentation.
1 - Delete the 9MM game folder from /sdcard/gamelof/ I believe it has the letters 9MM in it.
2 - Change your build.prop. Model: PG86100 Brand: Sprint
3 - Reboot
4 - Start 9MM. let it download the files, mine were about 800MB
5 - Restore you build.prop . This will vary depending on your rom.
6 - Another reboot
Like I said this starts to play for me then locks up. I have not played much with all the plugins and drivers in Chainfire3D so the solution may be in there someplace. This may also not be the best way to get it running...but so far it is the closest I can get

I haven't tried it for this game, but I am familiar with jumping through hoops to get Gameloft games to work.
Basically what you would need to do is to pick a popular Tegra 2 device that Gameloft supports and Google for the build.prop of that devices. If you're not sure which devices are Tegra 2 check wikipedia and if you aren't sure which devices Gameloft supports check their site, but in general they like the big mobile carriers like Samsung, HTC and Motorola but ignore others like Asus, so don't pick the Transformer build.prop.
In this case I would say go for the Xoom build.prop edits and I did Google Xoom and 9mm and verified people with the Xoom are saying it works on their device.
In this case, a Google search for Xoom build.prop should bring up some useful results. Having done that the relevant edits you want will be:
ro.product.model=
ro.product.brand=
ro.product.name=
ro.product.device=
In the case of the Xoom you would want the following edits:
ro.product.model=Xoom
ro.product.brand=verizon
ro.product.name=trygon
ro.product.device=stingray
The other thing you will want to do is use Chainfire set to the Tegra 2.
The build.props should get you the Tegra data and then Chainfire should (hopefully) translate it run properly.
Again, I haven't tried all this but I have done similar edits for other Gameloft games.
That is the type of information I was looking for, thank you thank you thank you
I have Wifi issues when I reboot at work so I will try this when I get home tonight and report back.

[Q] Amazon AppStore wrong scale?

I did a search and couldn't find anything about this.
This drives me crazy. The Amazon AppStore has such tiny text and pictures, almost totally unusable without some reading glasses on. Ive compared what it looks like on the Note to the Galaxy Nexus (which has a very similar resolution) and it's displayed correctly on the latter.
Any tips or tricks to get it to look right? Is it just a bug with the app? Should I file a bug report to Amazon?
What it looks like compared to on the nexus:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
It's not really a bug per-say. Since the Galaxy Note has the same resolution as most tablets Amazon's app treats it as such. So it is technically displaying properly but since we have a 5.3 inch screen and not a 7-10in like on most android tablets we have to kinda squint our eyes. You could try reporting it to Amazon but I'm not sure if it will yield to anything.

wtf are you talking about? amazons own kindle fire is 1024x600 vs 1280x720 on the galaxy nexus and i just showed you in a picture that it renders fine on the nexus. if the nexus is a special case then the note should also be a special case. you cannot go by resolution to determine the screen size. and this is the only app ive run into with this problem.

If you want people to help you, you really shouldn't be rude to people - especially those who aren't being rude to you. You don't have to agree with his answer, but being a jerk about it simply makes others not want to help you.
Programs have no idea how big your screen size is. They do, however, know your screen resolution. It is not unreasonable for programs to say, 'okay, you have this many pixels, I'm going to maximize use of them.'.
Now, as you noted, there is the issue where you can have an extremely high density display (imagine this on a 300+ dpi retina display). And of course, eyesight varies. Making 'phone exceptions' as you implied it's doing for the Nexus is possible but long term wise that's a bad way to go. You'd have to arbitrarily decide what people want for that device.
What they should do, like all programs should do, is have a 'font size' type of setting, so people like me can live happily the way it is now, and people like you can set it to the 'phone layout' that you want.
tl;dr: Log a enhancement request with Amazon.

When the ATT Note launches and its more common Amazon will get around to fixing it.

You might be interested in knowing that earlier versions of the Amazon appstore used the 'phone interface' on the Galaxy note. If I recall, it was only fairly recently that an appstore update changed the store to 'tablet mode' on the Note.
I remember thinking 'oh.... wow. hmm' when it happened. I flirted e-mailing them a letter of protest, but I got used to it.

Why not? Other apps do - Netflix on the Note (as has been mentioned later), for example renders pretty much like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 - very different to the same app on my phone, and I think it is far better.
Whilst I appreciate the small scale of the Amazon AppStore may be a problem for some, personally I much prefer it. If they suddenly changed tomorrow to use the "phone" interface from the Nexus, I would be considering that to be an "issue", though I fully appreciate that the smaller size would definitely be a real problem for someone with less than perfect vision.
Personally, I think that GallardosEggrollShop was 100% correct when he said it was related to the resolution of the Note. The fact that it looks different on the Nexus is because they made a specific exception for the Nexus, but that doesn't change the general rule.

Good point here - the Note has not be launched in the US, unlike the Nexus, so why would Amazon specifically code an exception for the Note, when the AppStore is not supposed to be available outside the US?
However, even when the AT&T Note is launched, it possibly won't be fixed because the AT&T device will likely identify itself differently to the regular international Note.
Regards,
Dave
I just installed the midnote ice cream sandwich rom (which is quite usable as a daily driver), and interestingly the appstore has revered back to the 'phone' interface.
I have kind of mixed feelings about this.
As I said in earlier posts, it would be nice to have the option of selecting.

I'm fully aware this would probably be quite difficult to port, and likely quite time consuming.

Yes, but the Galaxy Note 2 supports all apps in multi-window mode...
This would be *nice* to have but I don't know how much easier it would be then to just multitasking between 2 apps now and having the apps full screen. I can see some of the benefits like watching a youtube video while chatting on Google Talk. There are some good alternatives such as popup video players and notepads that overlay on top of current app and typically are resizable and movable.
While it makes sense this would be better on a 7" then a 5"... it really would be best on a 10". 7" barely gives me enough breathing room for 1 app. Plus most of the "compatible apps" are simple things like a calculator and notes
Well it seems VERY useful to me.
It's better than popup apps in my opinion - more app options.
Overscreen browser is a great alternative for now
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
No, it's not.
This allows multiple apps to run side by side, Overskreen is just the browser. Also, it's not even compatible with Jelly Bean, so no one who owns a Nexus 7 can use it.

No, as I said, handful of specific Google apps. Read up on it. Will the list grow? Maybe? I'd have to guess it is a sdk used to support the function, is it worth app dev time to do it and possibly maintain multiple versions of their app?
more then google apps
Not just google apps can do this on the samsung note 10.1 .
samsng snote and lecture app
browser
vidoe player
picture gallery
polaris office
Photo shop (special note version)
I think there a few others that are on the samsung web app store. Samsung sbe adding apps to this.
Now for the bubble burst. The reason they work on the galaxy note is the new QUAD Core cpu and 2 GB Very fast ram .. samsung tried to release a less ram/power version of the 10.1 note with a higer res display. they backed the display down and increased the cpu//ram. this is also to support the WACOM S PEN..
I have been reading alot about the device because mine will be here Monday. So the above if from my reading and research. I can update you more mid next week.. I do not see a need for split windows on a 7 inch screen .. get the overscreen browser and try it.. JUST Does not work for productive work...
Hope this help make it more understandable... too bad samsung did not make the n7 . i give up because of the screen issues sent two of them back and will NOT order a 3rd...
Dude. Overskreen DOES NOT work on Jelly Bean. And it is just one app, vs an entire suite of Google Apps.
Also there's no need for window management.
Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor too, just less RAM - which isn't even a problem, it still can handle side by side apps.
And you're telling some weird stuff here. We are talking about Galaxy Note 2, which allows more apps, and works better. AND it works on a 5 inch screen, so it'll be awesome on a seven inch.
So yeah, please don't come back with your 'research' to tell us that you think that this feature is unnecessary.
i hope sincerely as a dev can make a mod for port this feature in future beacause it's very usefull even if work only with google apps it's better ,
anyone know if a moded youtube apps existing for play a video on background because i search since 3 month but not find ?

I don't think there is one, sadly. Android doesn't support true multitasking
While i would love to have or port this it simply isnt possible, it requires a lot of changing to the frameworks and it would be hard to decompile all of samsungs sources and extract it.

Nexus 7 2 Phablet UI?

I had the original Nexus 7, and loved it; however, only after I was able to root it and install a ROM that supported a "true tablet UI." The Phablet UI was nothing more than a bother to me, as apps that had a separate version for phones and tablets, I would always end up running the phone version. I would think with a 1080p resolution combined with a 7" screen a tablet UI would have no problems being ran. From what I can see, it looks as if the Phablet UI will be standard again.
How quickly do you think ROMs will come out and be able to run a true tablet UI? Also, are there any other tablets coming out soon that will be a competitor, with a 1080p screen, and running a true tablet UI? Maybe with external storage, as well?
Tablet Mode was phased out and no longer officially supported. We only have Tablet Mode thanks to the the wonderful Devs finding and activating the code.
SO... we probably won't have tablet mode out of the box, but custom roms like AOKP and others now know how to force tablet UI. So it would (should) just be a matter of time until those are ported.
There still are separate 10 inch layouts for the apps and even the systemui. The resolution doesn't determine which layout is used. The number of DP's is what determines it. This is calculated by the screen resolution and the LCD density setting. 4.1 had no effect on how third party apps gave their layouts. It just added a separate 7 inch layout.

I want to add my voice that I agree with OP.
Phablet UI is the most retarded GUI for a tablet.
I will not be upgrading to 4.3 until our fantastic devs have added true tablet ui back.

I use N7 in portrait mode most of the time, and find the phablet UI fantastic. Tablet mode confuses me, why would I want to use something quite different then my phone, just for the sake of being different, stock N7 looks great. Yes, some apps are run in phone mode, but if you bug developers enough, they'll add N7 into the code so it'll be run in tablet mode specifically.
Get over the idea of "phablet". That is the standard android UI

Um.... because you're already using something quite different from your phone? If you want to use your phone, use your phone. If you want to use a tablet, it shouldn't be forced to the same UI that is optimized for extremely small screens.

Pretty much this. The current UI is the "Android UI" now.
