Not sure if this is an old topic but I just dropped my Dell streak today *cries* n my screen is all cracked..
I'm not an electrician or anything so my knowledge of gadgets is minimum.
Anyways anyone ever replaced it? Can you advise me on how to go about it? Like tools I would need and important things to look out for. Thanks in advance

Get you a screen from ebay then look here for the rest:

order it from ebay...
mine also broke..and I went to dell service center. They asked for around 140$ for screen replacement and around 200$ for phone replacement.
I order it from ebay just 50$ with the tools and replaced it in my home(youtube)....
Here is a link to a PDF that I put together.
http://rdtk.net/files/Dell Streak LCD Replacement.pdf
Enjoy.
Are there upgrade screens for replacing LCD
Three related things here.
1. Is there an upgrade LCD available for the Dell Streak 5. Is there a higher resolution, more pixels per inch LCD screen that can work in Dell Streak 5 with its factory based 16M colors, 480 x 800 pixels, 5.0 inches, ~187 ppi pixel density?
2. My screen broke in a weird way. One day, I was in the middle of talking with my friend on my Dell Streak 5 and the screen began to roll and scroll fast and non-stop...like a broken vertical hold on old TV sets. The rolling screen goes from the home key area, scrolls-rolls horizontally and does not stop even after factory resets. So I am considering to replace the screen per chance, the damage is not software related and it is caused by the hardware of the screen. The phone was not dropped or banged or anything...it just began scrolling while I was having a telephone conversation. If I buy a new screen, I would like to buy an improved LCD.
3. Does anyone have success with HDMI out for duplicating the Dell Streak 5 screen? There is the official Dell Dock which I can only get to reproduce limited video through the HDMI. I also am about to test the Dell Streak 10 Pro now has HDMI and USB-host ports - but my guess it will not work or even connect to the Dell 5. http://www.streaksmart.com/2011/11/...-usb-host-ports-thanks-to-dell-accessory.html
Hearing your thoughts on repair or upgrade is greatly appreciated. Thanx.
Any updates?

I guess we just have to put that lovely Dell Streak in its case, and file it away in a drawer...and buy a new phone. A sad day...and my office has 3 of them! What 5 inch screen to buy next?

any one have a review for this? i value XDA member reviews more then engadget or gizmodo.
also i was wondering if it would be possible to later on change the battery on the device
Not really much better than the Dell Streak 5
The Dell streak 7 is not that much better than the Dell Streak 5. It has a slightly larger screen (5 in. vs. 7 in.) Comes with Android 2.2, (Dell streak 5 also does, but this was an update). It doesn't have a faster processor or even 4g. You might as well consider a Xoom or waiting for another tablet.
I'm confused as to ur comment. The streak 7 has a tegra2. And 4g. Did u mean that's the only difference from the streak7. And I would wait for a xoom but I'm not a fan of the 10" form factor

The 7in tabs just seem like big phones. I'd rather have a 10in model.
does this one have phone capability too?
I generally don't go by reviews from the likes of Gizmodo but given a low resolution screen coupled with poor viewing angles is enough to make it a "no buy" for me.
Played with the Dell Streak 7 today along side a Galaxy Tab.
Aside from Asphalt 5 looking better on the tab, I liked the Streak for everything else over the tab.
So gamers might want the Tab but for other stuff I would go with the Streak hands down.

Highriser doesn't know what he's talking about as both the statements about what it doesn't have are wrong.
I'm not a fan of gizmodo or engadgets reviews either. Seem to apple biased to me and care way to much about small details. But that aside the only major concern I have is the batterylife. It seems pretty awful and was wondering what the chances are of a extended battery maybe 4000-5000 coming out soon. And whay about root?

Dell has an extended battery for the Streak 5,so one could infer that the same will be provided for the 7".... and click the developers forum for the Streak 7.... it's already been rooted, instructions are given there.
Check out the Digital Digest review on Youtube... unbiased and positive.
Didn't read gizmodo's cus they are ridiculous... and got pissed at the Engadget review because they shoot things down over trivial items such as "veiwing angles" which IMHO aren't even a factor for me when deciding to buy a device.
I have the Streak 5 because I want a tablet with phone... I tried the Galaxy Tab... nice, but no 3G Tmo phone access and too many hurdles involved in getting the phone working...
If the Streak 7 comes out with Tmo 3G access, might consider it. But I have to say I LOVE the Streak 5... perfect blend of portability and function to me.

The Streak 7 does not have a removable battery like the 5 does.
On a positive note, Here is a decent review for a change.

I own a Streak 5, Streak 7, and a Viewsonic G-Tablet.
Facts about the Streak 7"
1-This DOES have the Nvidia Tegra dual core
2-Only has 256MB RAM
3-Battery life is poor (around 3 hours of regular useage (browsing, etc)
4-This unit is very fast
5-Display is good, but only 800x480
6-Evcellent g-sensor and accellerometer response
7-4G, I tested in a 4G area, and DL was 6.4Mb/sec, UL was about 1.4Mb/sec
Overall, I really like the unit, but am waiting for the LG G-Slate
I think the display is fine. Its actually the same ppi as the ipad and I have never heard anyone cry about the screen on that device.

Not sure why you quoted me. I simply corrected your statement. But since you mentioned it. One persons good enough may not be the same as anothers. I like my streak 7 but it may not be everyones cup of tea. Plus its 200 with a 2 year contract of 39.99/month. That does make a huge difference.

Bought the Streak 5 last year. It is the unlocked give-away one so I have NO SUPPORT but haven't needed it so far. I was first to get the upgrade to 2.2 but now I am on my own ..
I am a T-Mobile customer and have been trying to decide [since I am due an upgrade] whether to go with the Streak 7 or the Galaxy Tab .. Streak 4G, Galaxy Tab 3G. Either one will seem lightning fast compared to what I have with the Streak 5 ..
2 other things that I have in the back of my mind are: Is there something else out there that will work on T-Mobiles 3G or 4G network? I sure do like those Chinese iPad look-alikes ....
I have been a gadget-a-holic for years and years. I still can't part with my HTC Shift. as time goes on, rather than getting smarter, I get ummm, LESS SMART. Maybe it is because there are too many gadgets to choose from and they are coming out so fast or maybe I am getting senile ??

OH YEAH !!! nice but ... I don't want larger than 7 inch. I have the iPad and it doesn't drop into my purse the way my Streak 5 or my son's Galaxy 7 inch tablet does.
I say go for it. It's fast, stable, and the right size. The only gripe I have with mine is the battery life and using airplane mode when I don't need tje radio and running wfi knly has helped with that bunches.
And, as a previous owner of one of the cheap chinese tablets, I can say that this tablet is one of the best ones I have ever used. If you want a tablet with 4G, this is the one you're looking for. The battery life does not compare well with some of the other tablets, but as long as you are not watching video 24/7, it should suit your needs. I am a fan of the seven inch form factor as well.

Do you use the phone capabilities on your Streak 5? They're not present with the Streak 7. Although you can get Sipdroid working, it's not as nice as a built-in phone.
Are you paying for a real data plan already? If you're prepaid, you'll have to pony up for the weekly or monthly data plans.
It's a very solid device. Very fast. Not as portable as the 5, but if you're carrying a purse, probably not an issue. Viewing angles are not fantastic.

At first I thought a 7 inch tablet would be too small and I really wanted a 10 inch. I ordered the streak 7 just because I was itching to get a tablet and I had a credit line with dell so I made the plunge. After having it and using it I realized that 7 inches is perfect! It's easy to use with one hand, it fits in my back jeans pocket (not so much after I put the otterbox commuter case on it but I can still get it in the back pocket of some of my jeans)
I know dell is coming out with a 10 inch tablet in April.. I might have to pick one of them up too hehe I'm telling you having a $6000+ credit limit with dell is VERY dangerous! hahaha
Gurus,
I have a Streak 5 and am wondering if streak 7 is good with respect to resolution 480 x 800 like 5? I have seen a couple of reviews where screen size and low resolution of the streak 7 makes some pics and text look pixelized. So owners of streak please advice.. Would it help me if i changed the dpi to a lower number and get more screen landscape? or not..
Would resolution matter soo much if you chage the dpi? Please advice.. and help greatly appreciated..
If it is good.. i want to jump on it for the dual core and looks..
I think the screen is great given the price and feature set... the Streak 7 is a real diamond in the rough...
I really like the streak 7. It's my first tablet and I have read a lot of people complain about the resolution. For me, for that size screen it's fine. I dont see it pixelate or anything like that. I also play Dungeon Defenders but its one made for the tegra 2. I also have it on my mytouch 4g and the difference is crazy! on the streak 7 it's console quality! The only complaint I really have with it is the battery life. people complain about the res but come on it's a 7 inch screen. I think on a 10 inch screen or bigger the resolution would be more noticeable but on a 7 inch screen it's just fine.. people just like bashing it.. because well.. it's dell.. lol

+1 I dont think it gets the credit it deserves because of the dell bias.. I think if some other company released the same thing it wouldnt have gotten such horrible reviews.. I read engadgets review but then I started reading other engadget dell reviews... they always have something bad to say about whatever they are reviewing..
plus once this baby gets honeycomhb then we will see the real power of the streak
Turning a sidekick line into a ds7. Was worried about screen resolution, but everyone here isn't worried so I'm gonna take the plunge. Best tablet for the price considering the tegra 2 processor

After you flash the new upgrade with the tweaks included, you are HIGHER then any other device on the quadrant scores. I reached 2200 last night. Which OEM defaults only gave about 1500. So yes, Monster madness, Crazy Snowboard, Dungeon Defenders, all play like a PC quality game. Its very nice.

I make and receive phone calls just fine using Google voice and sipdroid. It works with the speaker/Mic or ear phones/mic
well actually i wanna use it in India where 3G is still initial stages and price sucks.. moreover google phone and sipdroid wouldnt work here..
I would have said get the Galaxy Tab as it has a better screen and a longer battery life. Also more support here and also can be made to make phone calls. While the streak 7 has very good specs its screen resolution hurts it and makes it look dull next to the Galaxy Tab.
I think your experience will depend on what you are looking for. I don't really notice a difference in graphics, as I am not trying to watch HD movies (lower res movies are ok on a 7" scree) or edit photos. I am happy with the streaming content I have seen so far, global-tv in canada and youtube.
The only drawback I see on this device is the battery life, which has been much improved since the update and that you can't charge it via your PC. Otherwise this has been exactly what I was looking for. On a bang for you buck, this seems to be the best on the market for its price, given the 4G, SD card, "future" upgrade to 3.0 and overall quality.
A very happy streak user.

Why would I buy a tab for 200 when I can get the ds7 for the same price?
Hello guys. I am a streak 5 owner that really loves his device. I'm thinking about getting the 7" but I want some real life opinions from real life users. Mainly, how does the 800x480 resolution translate on the 7" screen. I've read some pretty ugly reviews on the lower resolution, and unfortunatly there is no tmo service or stores in my area so I can't get my hands on one. At $299 (newegg wifi only) the lower resolution is looking better and better. So that said I'd like to have your input. Thanks in advance.

I have no problems with the resolution. And Amazon is now matching that Newegg price, BTW.
I got my husband and I matching Streak 7's for his birthday at the end of March. We are both very happy with them. They get at least a couple hours of use or more every day - from playing games, surfing the 'net, reading books, checking facebook, etc. etc.
It is a snappy little unit. So many great features. I compared the Streak to the Galaxy tab in the Tmo store (went back twice before I made my decision) and was disappointed in the Tab's slow, laggy performance. The screen was better on the Tab, but after side-by-side comparison, I chose performance over screen resolution. And I'm not sorry that I did.
I don't have an issue with the screen at all. Works just fine. Maybe it's not a gazillion resolution, but it's not like you can't see on it. You can. Just fine.
For the price of the Streak 7, I don't think you can go wrong.
The Galaxy Tab definitely has the better screen, but you won't really notice the difference unless you have them side by side. There's one viewing angle on the Streak 7 that's not great, but it's easily mitigated. The viewing angle is "down," when viewing in landscape mode. As an example of mitigating it, you can't see the screen very well if it's flat on a desk in front if you in landscape mode. However, you can simply flip it over (it'll auto-rotate) and it's great!
So, the screen isn't really an issue. Remember, the online gadget blogs are reviewing Galaxy Tabs and Super AMOLEDs and such along with the Streak 7. When you have all those side by side, the differences really stand out. When it's by itself, the screen on the Streak 7 is actually quite pleasant.
As for the rest, it's a very snappy little device. It's only running FroYo, but it still scoots. Once it has Honeycomb, it'll be perfect so far as software is concerned; but don't be fooled into thinking FroYo is a slouch. It's still miles ahead of the iPad UI.
The one, unequivocal shortcoming is the battery life. There are some little tweaks you can do to maximize it, but there's no getting around it: the battery life sucks. It's a trade-off for rocket-ship performance in a perfectly sized, perfectly priced device. I use mine for everything (phone, home internet, camera, alarm clock, mp3 player, etc.), and have found that, while certainly not ideal, the battery is livable. If you're going to have to go for long stints away from a power supply, this probably isn't the tablet for you.
Last thing: custom ROMs. This is another weak point for the Streak 7. We basically have one dev working on this; DJ_Steve. He's a great dev, but there's only so much one person can do. If you're looking for a Nexus or Droid 1 type experience with custom firmware and such, look more towards the Galaxy Tab or something like it. That said, the stock interface is great (ditch the Dell Stage UI and get Zeam or ADW Launcher), and Honeycomb will get here either through Dell or DJ_Steve, so what better could you ask for? If you've really into theming, though, shop elsewhere. This simply doesn't have the dev support right now.
That's about it for my impressions. Feel free to ask some follow-up questions; the community in here is pretty helpful and friendly. I typed all of this from my Streak 7, by the way, and it was smooth and easy to do. I really don't miss my work computer when I'm away from it.
Thanks a lot guys. Wow really sounds like a pick your poison kind of thing. For me personally performance is going to best screen res any day. I'm familiar with Dj_steve and his excellent work. I'm currently running one of his roms now. Really glad to hear good things about the performance. Looks like they streak 7 is in my near future. Thanks again guys, very helpful.

Dell Streak 7 a good buy
I have a few tablets and the Dell is a good size. You can carry it in your coat pocket or woman or man purse. The screen resolution is very good. I view the internet in desktop mode and I can read the fine print very well. I also like the full size SD card reader because I can dump my digital camera pictures when out in the field without the need of adapters. The Android 2.2 OS is good for me because I have hundreds of programs that run on it. The rest of the specs pretty much match the other tablets.
Just Got One
Could not resist the $299 price - bought at Staples retail.
I have been disappointed with the lack of development by htc and the service provided by sprint. I have an HTC View and I am going to probably sell it. I am looking to replace it with a wifi only tablet. I have been looking at the streak and the galaxy tab 7". I was wondering how the display looks on the streak. I know the resolution is not as high as my View but I have found after using my Epic Touch that resolution isn't everything. I also read that the streak uses sdcard's instead of microSDHC. What is the largest sdcard that it can read?
i love my dell streak 7 i have a 16gb microsdhc in a full size sdcard i also think that the resolutions not to bad if you look on youtube you can see it for youself
I have a XOOM but it is just too big in some cases. I have a Nook Color with CM7 but there are some MAJOR issues as far as I am concerned. Best Buy is suppose to have DELL STREAK 7 on sell for the Black Friday Sales. Even though the Dell would be under $300 I hope to keep it going for a year or 2 and replace the XOOM and all the other stuff with a 1 universal unit.
The Dells 800x600 screen res and lack of battery life according to spec are a concern big concern to me.
Off time is reading Nook, Kindle and Reader app and using it for some teaching to hold notes. A little youTube and web surfing with e-mail. is off an on through the day.
Can someone give me their opinion?
Thanks in advance....
I can get through a full day of moderate usage. So battery life is not much of a problem unless you plan to use it on a transatlantic flight.
The DS7 is a 800x480
