where to begin? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, i've been using Xperia x10 previously and i was able to install CFW and root on my x10.
I just upgrade to galaxy s2. It's with BELL but unlocked. now my question is :
where to begin to root? and install custom firmwares? what do i need?
your help woud be much appreciated!

You must flash a custom kernel which roots your device and installs clockworkmod recovery. From the recovery you can install than any custom ROM.
I think there are enough instructios how to do that.

ok done the rooting and clockworkmod recovery.
what is the best firmware out there? in case i fail to install new CFW, how to factory reset to stock firmware? Thanks.

Go to SII section please...

[Q] Question about getting Clockworkmod Recovery On SGT T-Mobile

I'm not a noob to phone flashing as I had a G1 from day 1 and have had numerous other HTC android devices since etc, just very new to tablet and with what im reading here, it's more complicated to flash roms on a tablet (or any samsung device for that matter) then on a phone. With a phone you just root, flash s-off or a new recovery, slap a rom on the SD card and flash it from clockworkmod or amon ra and blam, you are done. (hate the whole rom manager thing). Basically what im asking is what are the steps to get the tab ready to flash a rom. is it similar to a phone Root, recovery, rom? or is it different for each rom.
So far I've rooted using the noob root guide. I'm still on the original T-mobile stock firmware. I'm looking to get clockworkmod recovery flashed so i can start playing with all the wonderful rom's here. From what I have gathered...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925760
Is this the only way to accomplish this as of right now?
I've checked to make sure im unlocked. im on stock 2.2. If I flash this using the odin instructions will it achieve what i'm looking for?
The rom I want to flash is the new 2.3.4 rom and the upcoming honeycomb rom. I might even try out overcome as well.
Thanks for any help in clarifying the process!

[Q] Installing CWM on Galaxy POP GT S 5570

My friend want to upgrade his phone,
and asking me to do so.
I know few things and not a noob but also not a dev or a pro.
Thus i want to ask a question:
He is having an unrooted Galaxy POP GT S 5570 with stock 2.2 froyo
Question is that
Can i directly flash CWM recovery 4.0.0.5 using odin
that is just flashing tass.ops and tass-recovery-cwm.tar ???
Because somewhere i read that CWM requires GingerBread on GT S 5570 to work?
And i know that it is very difficult to unbrick for users like me and sometimes impossible for noobs.
I'm having Xperia X8
And sony ericcson devices are very easy to unbrick using official SONY UPDATE SERVICE SOFTWARE.
If there is something like the above one, for SAMSUNG,
Please tell me?
I tried to OC his phone once and phone strucked in bootloops.
Then somehow I managed to install Stock Firmware of Galaxy MINI
Then we go to the CUSTOMER Care and asked them to reinstall the firmware
And again he is on stock 2.2 only.

well, I think cwm 4.0.0.5 will not work on froyo.. there was once a CWM made specially for froyo and you can get it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16147687&postcount=1
Problem is that there is no more development for froyo.. so for any questions and issues that you may encounter, you will have to figure it out yourself..
Why not upgrade the phone to GB? It would a lot easier and developement is concentrated on this version. you can flash with Odin tool to upgrade the phone to GB. flash cwm 4.0.0.5 from there and you can start installing custom roms on it. you can choose to update cwm as well since current one is 5.0.2.6..

cwm link froyo gb link:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342190
Thanks for your support and help.
I'm reading and searching on these things.
Now the actual thing that i want is
A backup of the current state.
But if is 100 % sure that GT-S5570_INU_S5570DDKQ7_S5570ODDKQ6_S5570DDKQ7.rar
file will upgrade to GB and works well, then no need of backup.
Ok i had understood all the things .
I would surely upgrade my friends phone and install CWM and provide him with a big list of CUSTOM ROMS which devs are developing at our beloved XDA FORUMS.
XDA ROCKS
THANKS A LOT for the assistance.

[Q]

Hello
my Samsung galaxy mini has come back from warranty after being bricked by rom manager a month ago and i know have courage to root it -didnt know about xda developers then (have rooted my sensation xe and wildfire succecfully in the meantime)
however because of my bad experience with my galaxy mini im a bit cautious i know
I can root it easily
but the recovery is what troubles me as i know there are two methods
flashing with stock recovery
odin
which is the safest or are they both the same and what are the chances of messing up using odin

just follow tutorials, I skipped rooting and just flashed CWM via odin and then flashed pre-rooted custom rom

I've never really messed with Odin too much, but I flashed it with the stock recovery no problem. If you search on the forums I'm sure you'll find an easy root zip that you can download. I also got CWM (clock work recovery mod) and I use that to install all of my custom ROMs. I've never had a problem yet. Hope that helps!
Can someone send me a link to flahsing cwm using stock recovery (only saw the one with Odin)
And if I root and install cwm will I be able to accecc my stock Rom or will I have to
Flash a new Rom

Stock Gingerbread (OTA Upgraded). How to CWM?

I'm not a Captivate User. My friend uses it & want my help to flash it. I've flash roms before. So I've some preliminary knowledge. He's in 2.3.6 (upgraded from OTA).
Now I need a link how to flash ClockWorkMod on Captivate 2.3.6 the easy way.. Any guide?
Once I install CWM I'll be able to install the ROM (I guess). Any guide how to install CWM on gingerbread? (The phone is not rooted)

Lots of information already on here and a little searching goes a long ways. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 This will give you step by step instructions on how to get where you're wanting to go.
Mods can lock the thread. I've successfully installed Slim Bean on the captivate.

[Q] Rooting Samsung Galaxy Pocket (GT S5300)

So I have successfully rooted my device after waiting for 2 years warranty to be over. I'm planning to install a ROM on my device but I don't have any idea what to do next. Been planning to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682495
My question is, should I install Stock Firmware and ClockworkMod Recovery before installing the ROMs on this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2642316
I cannot post on his thread for I am only a new member. I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance!
Just install CWM, no need to install stock ROM as you will have to wipe data/cache anyway.
Hope I could help and good luck installing custom ROMs
